Accelerated electrothermal aging tests were conducted at a constant temperature of 60 degrees C and at different stress levels of 6 kV/mm, 7 kV/mm and 8 kV/mm on unfilled epoxy and epoxy filled with 5 wt% of nano alumina. The leakage current through the samples were continuously monitored and the variation in tan delta values with aging duration was monitored to predict the impending failure and the time to failure of the samples. It is observed that the time to failure of epoxy alumina nanocomposite samples is significantly higher as compared to the unfilled epoxy. Data from the experiments has been analyzed graphically by plotting the Weibull probability and theoretically by the linear least square regression analysis. The characteristic life obtained from the least square regression analysis has been used to plot the inverse power law curve. From the inverse power law curve, the life of the epoxy insulation with and without nanofiller loading at a stress level of 3 kV/mm, i.e. within the midrange of the design stress level of rotating machine insulation, has been obtained by extrapolation. It is observed that the life of epoxy alumina nanocomposite of 5 wt% filler loading is nine times higher than that of the unfilled epoxy.

In the current study, amino silane functionalized cenosphere particles was used as a reinforcing filler in poly(vinyl butyral) matrix and were made by melt blending. The changes observed in the dielectric performance of the composite films with varying weight percentage of cenosphere particle in the matrix were investigated. The dielectric property and impedance spectroscopy were evaluated as a function of applied frequency in the range of 50 Hz to 5 MHz. It is observed that, because of orientation polarization of the PVB polymer, the permittivity and impedance decrease, whereas conductivity increases. Tangent loss graph indicates that the property of the matrix is associated with geometrical fill factor and the lowest quality factor. Therefore, above 10 kHz, these composites can be considered as dielectric loss-less material. (C) 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers

Conducting polymers have the combined advantages of metal conductivity with ease in processing and biocompatibility; making them extremely versatile for biosensor and tissue engineering applications. However, the inherent brittle property of conducting polymers limits their direct use in such applications which generally warrant soft and flexible material responses. Addition of fillers increases the material compliance, but is achieved at the cost of reduced electrical conductivity. To retain suitable conductivity without compromising the mechanical properties, we fabricate an electroactive blend (dPEDOT) using low grade PEDOT: PSS as the base conducting polymer with polyvinyl alcohol as filler and glycerol as a dopant. Bulk dPEDOT films show a thermally stable response till 110 degrees C with over seven fold increase in room temperature conductivity as compared to 0.002 S cm(-1) for pristine PEDOT: PSS. We characterize the nonlinear stress-strain response of dPEDOT, well described using a Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic model, and report elastomer-like moduli with ductility similar to fives times its original length. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows constant storage moduli over a large range of frequencies with corresponding linear increase in tan(delta). We relate the enhanced performance of dPEDOT with the underlying structural constituents using FTIR and AFM microscopy. These data demonstrate specific interactions between individual components of dPEDOT, and their effect on surface topography and material properties. Finally, we show biocompatibility of dPEDOT using fibroblasts that have comparable cell morphologies and viability as the control, which make dPEDOT attractive as a biomaterial.

Toward designing the next generation of resorbable biomaterials for orthopedic applications, we studied poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) composites containing graphene. The role, if any, of the functionalization of graphene on mechanical properties, stem cell response, and biofilm formation was systematically evaluated. PCL composites of graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO (RGO), and amine-functionalized GO (AGO) were prepared at different filler contents (1%, 3%, and 5%). Although the addition of the nanoparticles to PCL markedly increased the storage modulus, this increase was largest for GO followed by AGO and RGO. In vitro cell studies revealed that the AGO and GO particles significantly increased human mesenchymal stem cell proliferation. AGO was most effective in augmenting stem cell osteogenesis leading to mineralization. Bacterial studies revealed that interaction with functionalized GO induced bacterial cell death because of membrane damage, which was further accentuated by amine groups in AGO. As a result, AGO composites were best at inhibiting biofilm formation. The synergistic effect of oxygen containing functional groups and amine groups on AGO imparts the optimal combination of improved modulus, favorable stem cell response, and biofilm inhibition in AGO-reinforced composites desired for orthopedic applications. This work elucidates the importance of chemical functionalization of graphene in polymer composites for biomedical applications.

The present study focuses on developing functionally graded syntactic foams (FGSFs) based on a layered co-curing technique. The FGSFs were characterized for compressive and flexural properties and compared with plain syntactic foams. The results showed that the specific compressive modulus was 3-67% higher in FGSFs compared to plain syntactic foams. FGSF exhibited 5-34% and 34-87% higher specific modulus and strength, respectively in flexural mode. The microscopic examinations of comparative responses of the filler and matrix to deformation suggest that the failure is dominated by the matrix. The gradient in the composition of syntactic foams helps in effectively distributing the stress throughout the microstructure and results in improved mechanical performance of syntactic foams. From the microscopy studies, it is evident that, the failure mechanism in the FGSF under flexural loading is governed by a crack that initiated on the tensile side of the specimen and propagated through the thickness to cause complete fracture. The microscopic observations further clearly demonstrate the existence of seamless interfaces between the layers and a clear difference in the cenosphere concentration across the interface, affirming the gradation in the prepared samples. The results show that appropriate compositions of FGSFs can be selected to develop materials with improved mechanical performance. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:685-693, 2015. With the emergence of scientific interest in graphene oxide (GO) in recent times, researchers have endeavored to incorporate GO in thermoset polymeric matrix to develop composites with extraordinary set of properties. The current state of research in graphene/thermoset polymer composites is highlighted here with a focus on the role of interface in dictating the overall properties of the composites. Different strategies like covalent and non-covalent functionalization of GO have been discussed with respect to improvement in mechanical, electrical, thermal and rheological properties. In addition, future prospects have been outlined. By assessing the current state of research in graphene/thermoset composites, it is obvious that graphene derivatives are promising materials in enhancing the structural properties of the nanocomposites at extremely low levels of filler loading. This opens new avenues in designing lightweight composites for myriad applications and by tailoring the interfacial adhesion with the polymer, ordered structure can be achieved at macroscopic processing scales. In this paper we maximize the thermoelectric (TE) figure of merit, ZT, of n-type skutterudites, (In,Sr,Ba,Yb)(y)Co4Sb12, via three different routes: (i) find the optimum fraction of In as fourth filler (ii) check the influence of powder particle, grain, and crystallite size on the TE properties and (iii) check thermal stability. Filled n-type (Sr, Ba, Yb)(y)Co4Sb12 was mixed in three different proportions with In0.4Co4Sb12, ball milled (regular or high-energy (HB) ball milling) and hot-pressed. Particle size analyses and SEM pictures of the broken surfaces of the hot pressed samples document that only HB produces uniform particles/grains with average crystallite sizes similar to 100 nm, proven by transmission electron microscopy. X-ray Rietveld refinements combined with EDX indicate that in all cases indium entered the icosahedral voids of the skutterudite. Temperature dependent physical properties of all three regularly ball-milled samples show that increasing In-content infers an increasing electrical resistivity, increasing Seebeck coefficient but a decreasing total thermal conductivity. Although ZT (823 K) is in the same range as for the sample without In, the ZT values in the whole temperature range are higher and consequently the TE-conversion efficiency, eta is at least 10% higher. Annealing the samples at 600 degrees C for three days shows minor changes in structure and thermoelectric properties, indicating TE stability. The HB sample, due to uniformly small particles, equally sized grains and crystallites, exhibits a high power factor (4.4 mW/m K-2 at 730 K) and a very low thermal conductivity leading to an outstanding high ZT = 1.8 at 823 K (eta(max) = 17.5%). A unique strategy for scavenging free radicals in situ on exposure to gamma irradiation in polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites is presented. Blends of ultra-high molecular weight PE and linear low-density PE (PEB) and their nanocomposites with graphene (GPEB) were prepared by melt mixing to develop materials for biomedical implants. The effect of gamma irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties was systematically investigated. The neat blend and the nanocomposite were subjected to gamma-ray irradiation in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between PE and graphene sheets. Structural and thermal characterization revealed that irradiation induced crosslinking and increased the crystallinity of the polymer blend. The presence of graphene further enhanced the crystallinity via crosslinks between the polymer matrix and the filler on irradiation. Graphene was found to scavenge free radicals as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Irradiation of graphene-containing polymer composites resulted in the largest increase in modulus and hardness compared to either irradiation or addition of graphene to PEB alone. This study provides new insight into the role of graphene in polymer matrices during irradiation and suggests that irradiated graphene-polymer composites could emerge as promising materials for use as articulating surfaces in biomedical implants.

Dry sliding wear behavior of epoxy matrix syntactic foams filled with 20, 40 and 60 wt% fly ash cenosphere is reported based on response surface methodology. Empirical models are constructed and validated based on analysis of variance. Results show that syntactic foams have higher wear resistance than the matrix resin. Among the parameters studied, the applied normal load (F) had a prominent effect on wear rate, specific wear rate (w(s)) and coefficient of friction (mu). With increasing F, the wear rate increased, whereas ws and mu decreased. With increase in filler content, the wear rate and w(s) decreased, while the mu increased. With increase in sliding velocity as well as sliding distance, the wear rate and ws show decreasing trends. Microscopy revealed broken cenospheres forming debris and extensive deformation marks on the wear surface. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Desiccated coconut industries (DCI) create various intermediates from fresh coconut kernel for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. The mechanized and non-mechanized DCI process between 10,000 and 100,000 nuts/day to discharge 6-150 m(3) of malodorous waste water leading to a discharge of 2646642 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD) daily. In these units, three main types of waste water streams are coconut kernel water, kernel wash water and virgin oil waste water. The effluent streams contain lipids (1-55 g/l), suspended solids (6-80 g/l) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) at concentrations that are inhibitory to anaerobic bacteria. Coconut water contributes to 20-50 % of the total volume and 50-60 % of the total organic loads and causes higher inhibition of anaerobic bacteria with an initial lag phase of 30 days. The lagooning method of treatment widely adopted failed to appreciably treat the waste water and often led to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (propionic acid) along with long-chain unsaturated free fatty acids. Biogas generation during biological methane potential (BMP) assay required a 15-day adaptation time, and gas production occurred at low concentrations of coconut water while the other two streams did not appear to be inhibitory. The anaerobic bacteria can mineralize coconut lipids at concentrations of 175 mg/l; however; they are severely inhibited at a lipid level of = 350 mg/g bacterial inoculum. The modified Gompertz model showed a good fit with the BMP data with a simple sigmoid pattern. However, it failed to fit experimental BMP data either possessing a longer lag phase and/or diauxic biogas production suggesting inhibition of anaerobic bacteria.

Toward preparing strong multi-biofunctional materials, poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) conjugated graphene oxide (GO_PEI) was synthesized using poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a spacer and incorporated in poly( e-caprolactone) (PCL) at different fractions. GO_PEI significantly promoted the proliferation and formation of focal adhesions in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) on PCL. GO_PEI was highly potent in inducing stem cell osteogenesis leading to near doubling of alkaline phosphatase expression and mineralization over neat PCL with 5% filler content and was approximate to 50% better than GO. Remarkably, 5% GO_ PEI was as potent as soluble osteoinductive factors. Increased adsorption of osteogenic factors due to the amine and oxygen containing functional groups on GO_ PEI augment stem cell differentiation. GO_ PEI was also highly efficient in imparting bactericidal activity with 85% reduction in counts of E. coli colonies compared to neat PCL at 5% filler content and was more than twice as efficient as GO. This may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the sharp edges of the particles along with the presence of the different chemical moieties. Thus, GO_ PEI based polymer composites can be utilized to prepare bioactive resorbable biomaterials as an alternative to using labile biomolecules for fabricating orthopedic devices for fracture fixation and tissue engineering.

Electromagnetic shielding has become important for various electrical systems because of the electromagnetic pollution caused by the large scale use of electronic devices operating at different frequencies and power levels. Traditionally used metallic shields lack flexibility and hence may not be the right choice for certain applications. In such situations, filled polymer composites provide a good alternative for electromagnetic shielding applications. Being polymer based, they are easy to manufacture and can be molded into the required geometry and shape. In this study, the shielding properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers filled silicone rubber are studied. The conductivity and the shielding effectiveness of the composites were measured at different filler loadings. Both the fillers are able to make the base polymer conducting even at very low filler loadings. The conductivity and the shielding effectiveness improved when the filler loading was above the percolation threshold.

The "interaction effect" between aluminum foam and metal column that takes place when foam-filled hat sections (top-hats and double-hats) are axially crushed was investigated in this paper. Based on experimental examination, numerical simulation and analytical models, a systemic approach was developed to partition the energy absorption quantitatively into the foam filler component and the hat section component, and the relative contribution of each component to the overall interaction effect was therefore evaluated. Careful observation of the collapse profile found that the crushed foam filler could be further divided into two main energy-dissipation regions: densified region and extremely densified region. The volume reduction and volumetric strain of each region were empirically estimated. An analytical model pertinent to the collapse profile was thereafter proposed to find the more precise relationship between the volume reduction and volumetric strain of the foam filler. Combined the superfolding element model for hat sections with the current model according to the coupled method, each component energy absorption was subsequently derived, and the influence of some controlling factors was discussed. According to the finite element analysis and the theoretical modeling, when filled with foam, energy absorption was found to be increased both in the hat section and the foam filler, whereas the latter contributes predominantly to the interaction effect. The formation of the extremely densified region in the foam filler accounts for this effect.

Characterization of polymer nanocomposites by electron microscopy has been attempted since last decade. Main drives for this effort were analysis of dispersion and alignment of fillers in the matrix. Sample preparation, imaging modes and irradiation conditions became particularly challenging due to the small dimension of the fillers and also to the mechanical and conductive differences between filler and matrix. To date, no standardized dispersion and alignment process or characterization procedures exist in the trade. Review of current state of the art on characterization of polymer nanocomposites suggests that the most innovative electron and ion beam microscopy has not yet been deployed in this material system. Additionally, recently discovered functionalities of these composites, such as electro and photoactuation are amenable to the investigation of the atomistic phenomena by in situ transmission electron microscopy. The possibility of using innovative thinning techniques is presented. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The interaction effect, i.e., the contribution of each component to the total energy absorption of an axially crushed foam-filled hat section was investigated quantitatively via numerical simulation. The FE results were first verified by experimental work of aluminum foam-filled top-hat and double-hat sections, then the contribution of foam-fillers and that of hat sections to the overall energy absorption were quantitatively obtained, respectively. When foam-filled, increase in energy absorption was found both in hat section component and foam-filler component, whereas the latter contributes predominantly to the interaction effect.
