The atomic scale structure of sodium borophosphates made by the sol-gel method is compared to those made by the melt-quench method. It is found that although the sol-gel generated materials have a higher tendency towards crystallization, they nevertheless show a qualitatively similar crystallization trend with composition to their melt-quench analogues; the progressive introduction of boron oxide into the phosphate network initially inhibits then promotes crystallization. At the composition associated with the most stable amorphous sodium borophosphate (20 mol% boron oxide), it is found that the atomic scale structure of the sol-gel synthesized network glass is almost identical to that of the corresponding melt-quenched one.

The use of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) as a spray-drying excipient in the preparation of inhalable formulations of proteins was investigated, using alkaline phosphatase as a model functional protein. Two spray-dried powders were investigated: a control powder comprising 100% (w/w) alkaline phosphatase and a test powder comprising 67% (w/w) NaCMC and 33% (w/w) alkaline phosphatase. Following physicochemical characterisation, the powders were prepared as both dry powder inhaler (DPI) and pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) formulations. The aerosolisation performance of the formulations was assessed using a Multi-Stage Liquid Impinger, both immediately after preparation and over a 16-week storage period. Formulating the control powder as a DPI resulted in a poor fine particle fraction (FPF: 10%), whereas the FPF of the NaCMC-modified DPI formulation was significantly greater (47%). When the powders were formulated as pMDI systems, the control and NaCMC-modified powders demonstrated FPFs of 52% and 55%, respectively. Following storage, reduced FPF was observed for all formulations except the NaCMC-modified pMDI system; the performance of this formulation following storage was statistically equivalent to that immediately following preparation. Co-spray-drying proteins and peptides with NaCMC may therefore offer an alternative method for the preparation of stable and respirable pMDI formulations for pulmonary delivery. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Benznidazole, a drug with specific anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity, is used in the treatment of Chagas’ disease. The radiopharmaceutical sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) is used to obtain diagnostic images of the stomach, thyroid, parathyroids, salivary glands, brain and in the study of esophageal reflux and blood flow. This study aimed at evaluating in vivo the influence of benznidazole treatment on the sodium pertechnetate biodistribution in Wistar rats. The percentage of radioactivity per gram (%ATI/g) of various organs (brain, heart, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, liver, muscle and blood) was determined. Comparing the treated rats with the controls, we observed that sodium pertechnetate biodistribution did not change when administered to rats treated for thirty days with benznidazole

The progress of hydrogen generation by sodium borohydride hydrolysis depends highly on the development of efficient catalysts based on non-noble metals such as cobalt. However, such catalysts undergo extensive deactivation which has a detrimental effect on their stability. Herein, highly porous copper and cobalt-based bimetallic foams, CuxCo100-x (x = 0-100 at%), produced by electrodeposition using the dynamic hydrogen bubble template are reported. The chemical composition of the foams was optimized in order to enhance specific surface area and improve their catalytic activity and stability as heterogeneous catalysts for sodium borohydride hydrolysis. Among the tested catalysts, copper-rich samples like Cu85Co15 are slightly more active than Co-100 and above all, they are less sensitive to deactivation by borates adsorption. Porous copper-rich foams were found to be an alternative to cobalt as low-cost, active and stable heterogeneous catalysts for hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of sodium borohydride. The objective of this study is to determine if the effects of a high molecular weight sodium hyaluronate (HA) alone or in combination with triamcinolone acetate (TA) can mitigate chondrocyte proteoglycan catabolism caused by interleukin-1 (IL-1) administration. Chondrocytes were collected from fetlock joints of ten horses euthanized for reasons unrelated to joint disease. Chondrocyte pellets were treated with media (negative control); media containing IL-1 only (positive control); or media containing IL-1 with HA only (0.5 or 2.0 mg/mL), TA only (0.06 or 0.6 mg/mL), or HA (0.5 or 2.0 mg/mL) and TA (0.06 or 0.6 mg/mL) in combination. Chondrocyte pellets were assayed for newly synthesized GAG, total GAG content, total DNA content, and mRNA levels of collagen type II, aggrecan, and COX-2. The high concentration of HA (2.0 mg/mL) increased GAG synthesis while the high concentration of TA (0.6 mg/mL) decreased loss of GAG into the media. Both the high concentration of HA and TA increased the total GAG content within the pellet. There was no change in pellet DNA content with either treatment. TA reduced COX-2 mRNA levels as well as aggrecan and collagen type II expression. Treatment with HA had no effect on mRNA levels of COX-2, aggrecan or collagen type II. These results indicate that the high concentration of HA or TA alone or in combination will mitigate effects of IL-1 administration on proteoglycan catabolism of equine articular chondrocytes.

Selenium is an essential nutrient for many organisms, including fish. It can be released in the water by natural processes of dissolving rocks and minerals, and by the wastewater from industries and agricultural activities, which can increase its concentration in the environment, leading to toxic effects to the aquatic biota. Median Lethal Concentrations (LC(50-96h)) of two forms of selenium were estimated to fingerlings of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, focusing on estimating indicators for future environmental risk assessments in aquatic ecosystems contaminated with those elements, particularly for evaluate sources of water quality suitable for rearing tilapia. The results were: LC(50-96h) of sodium selenite (Na(2)SeO(3)) = 4.42 mg Se(4+) L(-1), and LC(50-96h) of sodium selenate (Na(2)SeO(4)) = 14,67 mg Se(6+) L(-1). According to those data, it was possible to classify sodium selenite as highly toxic and sodium selenate as moderately toxic to fingerlings of tilapia.

Release of uranium from Na-autunite, an artificial mineral created as a result of polyphosphate injection in the subsurface at the DOE Hanford Site, takes place during slow dissolution of the mineral structure. Stability information of the uranyl-phosphate phases is limited to conditions involving pH, temperature, and a few aqueous organic materials. The carbonate ion, which creates very strong complexes with uranium, is the predominant ion in the groundwater composition. The polyphosphate technology with the formation of autunite was identified as the most feasible remediation strategy to sequester uranium in contaminated groundwater and soil in situ. The objectives of the experimental work were (i) to quantify the effect of bicarbonate on the stability of synthetic sodium meta-autunite created as a result of uranium stabilization through polyphosphate injection, (ii) calculate the kinetic rate law parameters of the uranium release from Na-autunite during dissolution, and (iii) to compare the process parameters with those obtained for natural calcium meta-autunite. Experiments were conducted using SPTF apparatus, which consists of syringe pumps for controlling flow rate, Teflon reactors and a heating/cooling system. 0.25 grams of synthetic Na-autunite was placed in the reactor and buffer solutions with varying bicarbonate concentrations (0.0005 to 0.003 M) at different pH (6 - 11) were pumped through the reactors. Experiments were conducted at four different temperatures in the range of 5 - 60oC. It was concluded that the rate of release of uranium from synthetic Na-autunite is directly correlated to the bicarbonate concentration. The rate of release of uranium increased from 1.90 x 10-12 at pH 6 to 2.64 x 10-10 (mol m-2 s-1) at pH 11 at 23oC over the bicarbonate concentration range tested. The activation energy values were invariant with the change in the bicarbonate concentration; however, pH is shown to influence the activation energy values. Uranyl hydroxides and uranyl carbonates complexes helped accelerate the dissolution of autunite mineral.

In an aging western population, a significant number of patients continue to suffer from angina once all revascularization and optimal medical treatment options are exhausted. Under experimental conditions, oral supplementation with inorganic nitrate was shown to exhibit a blood pressure-lowering effect, and has also been shown to promote angiogenesis, improve endothelial dysfunction and mitochondrial efficiency in skeletal muscle. It is unknown whether similar changes occur in cardiac muscle. In the current study, we investigate whether oral sodium nitrate treatment will improve myocardial ischemia in patients with stable angina.

Single stage and two-stage sodium sulfite cooking were carried out on either spruce, pine or pure pine heartwood chips to investigate the influence of several process parameters on the initial phase of such a cook down to about 60 % pulp yield. The cooking experiments were carried out in the laboratory with either a lab-prepared or a mill-prepared cooking acid and the temperature and time were varied. The influences of dissolved organic and inorganic components in the cooking liquor on the final pulp composition and on the extent of side reactions were investigated. Kinetic equations were developed and the activation energies for delignification and carbohydrate dissolution were calculated using the Arrhenius equation. A better understanding of the delignification mechanisms during bisulfite and acid sulfite cooking was obtained by analyzing the lignin carbohydrate complexes (LCC) present in the pulp when different cooking conditions were used. It was found that using a mill-prepared cooking acid beneficial effect with respect to side reactions, extractives removal and higher stability in pH during the cook were observed compared to a lab-prepared cooking acid. However, no significant difference in degrees of delignification or carbohydrate degradation was seen.  The cellulose yield was not affected in the initial phase of the cook however; temperature had an influence on the rates of both delignification and hemicellulose removal. It was also found that the  corresponding activation energies increased in the order:  xylan, glucomannan, lignin and cellulose. The cooking temperature could thus be used to control the cook to a given carbohydrate composition in the final pulp. Lignin condensation reactions were observed during acid sulfite cooking, especially at higher temperatures. The LCC studies indicated the existence of covalent bonds between lignin and hemicellulose components with respect to xylan and glucomannan. LCC in native wood showed the presence of phenyl glycosides, ϒ-esters and α-ethers; whereas the α-ethers  were affected during sulfite pulping. The existence of covalent bonds between lignin and wood polysaccharides might be the rate-limiting factor in sulfite pulping.
