As respostas pós-juncionais mediadas por adrenorreceptores β2 (ARβ2), responsáveis pelo relaxamento do músculo liso, na veia safena do cão, estão ausentes à nascença. Pelo contrário, no rato recém-nascido já se verifica a estimulação da adenilil ciclase pela activação dos ARβ2. Não existem ainda estudos no coelho recém-nascido. O principal objectivo deste trabalho é avaliar as respostas pós-juncionais mediadas pelos ARβ2 em coelhos recém-nascidos e jovens e relacionar essas respostas com a adrenalina produzida nas glândulas supra-renais. Traçaram-se curvas de dose-resposta à isoprenalina (agonista β) utilizando-se anéis de aorta montados em banho de órgãos isolados ligado a um transdutor de força isométrica. As catecolaminas das supra-renais foram quantificadas por RP-HPLC-ED. Em aortas pré-contraídas com fenilefrina (agonista α1), a isoprenalina causou relaxamento total apenas em coelhos recém-nascidos (n=10). O relaxamento máximo nos coelhos jovens foi de 21±4% (n=23). A potência da isoprenalina foi maior nos recém-nascidos (EC50=1.15×10-8±7.2×10-10 M, n=10) do que nos coelhos jovens (EC50=1.29×10-7 ±4.7×10-9 M, n=23). O relaxamento máximo com isoprenalina, em aortas pré-contraídas com prostaglandina F2α (PGF2α), no grupo de coelhos recém-nascidos foi de 95±3.6% (n=16). O relaxamento máximo nos coelhos jovens foi de 43.7±8.6% (n=9). Na pré-contracção com PGF2α a potência da isoprenalina registou-se maior nos recémnascidos (EC50=9.59×10-9±4.0×10-10 M, n=16) do que nos coelhos jovens (EC50=2.13×10- 8±3.8×10-9 M, n=9), estando concordante com os resultados da pré-contracção com fenilefrina. Nas supra-renais dos recém-nascidos, o conteúdo de noradrenalina foi de 586±128 nmol/mg e da adrenalina foi de 1915±356 nmol/mg (n=4) e nos coelhos jovens foi de 112±12 nmol/mg e de 3644±403 nmol/mg (n=6), respectivamente. As respostas mediadas por ARβ2 no coelho desenvolvem-se mais cedo do que no cão, pois já estão presentes no nascimento. Tal como no rato, no coelho a adrenalina é já a catecolamina em maior quantidade à nascença, enquanto no cão é vestigial. Há uma relação temporal entre a síntese da adrenalina, a única catecolamina biogénica com alta afinidade para os ARβ2 e a maturação das respostas pós-juncionais mediadas por esses receptores. Um protocolo para experiências futuras destinadas a testar esta hipótese, com base no knockdown da Feniletanolamina-N-metiltransferase por RNAi foi elaborado e incluído neste documento.

Present study aims to describe records of mauled and con-specific injures in various fish inhabiting different environment and to discuss possible impacts on fish behavior and ontogenesis. The fish specimens were collected from the Black Sea and Azores Islands (NE Atlantic). Individuals of European flounder, Pleuronectes flesus, common stingray, Dasyatis pastinaca and turbot, Scophthalmus maximus with missing dorsal and caudal fins and flesh, were found in the Black Sea. Specimens with severe mauls of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola, almaco jack, Seriola rivoliana and sargo, Diplodus sargus were recorded from the Azores Islands. All of them were caught alive and survived severe mauls caused by predators or by accidents with propellers, fishing nets. The NE Atlantic records, although possibly caused by natural predation, are more probably than not the result of negative interactions with human activity. Numerous records of mauled fish species from both regions show that the problem with adverse effects of fisheries is quite important. Predatory and con-specific injuries obviously are compatible with basic fish vital functions of described cases. The problem with negative anthropogenic interactions seems to be insufficiently investigated and need more attention by responsible managers and decision makers.

Um dos objetivos desta dissertação de mestrado foi avaliar o impacto ambiental do processo de tingimento usado na indústria de curtumes, em termos de volume de efluente produzido e sua carga poluente. Pretendeu-se também encontrar alternativas ao nível do processo de tingimento que levem a uma melhoria na qualidade do efluente produzido. Outro objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o funcionamento da ETAR existente na empresa JR Fontes, no que diz respeito aos parâmetros em estudo (carência química de oxigénio - CQO, pH, crómio e teor de sólidos suspensos totais - SST), propondo alterações que permitam respeitar os valores de emissão exigidos na licença de descarga da empresa. Verificou-se que o processo de tingimento aplicado pela empresa JR Fontes é muito poluente, em termos de carga orgânica e matéria em suspensão. Este facto é comprovado pelos resultados obtidos para os três processos estudados: Montana, Galáctico e Navak. Todos os processos apresentam um efluente com pH ácido (aproximado a 3) e valores de CQO superiores a 3550 mg O2/L, sendo o processo Navak aquele que apresenta o valor mais alto para o banho composto, 8362 mg O2/L. Relativamente ao teor de crómio, o banho de recurtume com concentração mais elevada de crómio total é o banho 1 do processo Navak, com 2297 mg/L, sendo que a concentração destes banhos é sempre elevada, igual ou superior a 746 mg/L. No que diz respeito à matéria em suspensão, o processo Navak é novamente o mais poluente, com um valor de 3842 mg SST/L, não sendo obtidos nos outros processos, valores inferiores a 1205 mg SST/L. Na realização de um processo alternativo de tingimento verificou-se que é possível diminuir a carga orgânica do efluente originado. A aplicação de recurtumes sintéticos deu origem a efluentes menos poluentes. O melhor valor obtido para a CQO foi de 1113 mg O2/L, sendo obtidos valores não superiores a 7185 mg O2/L para processos de características semelhantes aos aplicados nesta indústria. Relativamente à ETAR, apesar das restrições ao funcionamento que esta apresenta, no geral pode ser considerada eficiente, embora não consiga atingir o objetivo pretendido de remoção para a CQO, ou seja o valor de 1100 mg O2/L. Nos restantes parâmetros é cumprido o limite de emissão (350 mg SST/L, pH entre 6 e 9 e 2 mg Cr/L para o crómio total): os SST apresentam o valor de 98 mg SST/L, o crómio total de 1,2 mg Cr/L e o pH encontra-se entre 8 e 9. São aqui feitas duas abordagens para solucionar os problemas existentes na ETAR. A primeira considera um ajuste no tratamento e equipamentos existentes, através da reconstrução do tanque de equalização, da substituição do coagulante por sulfato ferroso e da reconstrução do sedimentador, assim como a substituição das tubagens por umas de maior diâmetro, solucionando assim problemas de manutenção de toda a instalação e do incumprimento da legislação. A outra abordagem implica a substituição do sistema de afinação existente, os filtros de areia e carvão ativados, por um sistema de membranas de ultrafiltração ou por dois filtros de carvão ativado. Para tratar um efluente com um valor de CQO de 3000 mg O2/L com o carvão estudado, seriam necessários 132 kg de carvão por coluna, aproveitando-se os equipamentos existentes. No caso das membranas filtrantes, estas são eficazes, reduzindo a CQO em cerca de 70%. Ao contrário do carvão, a aplicação deste sistema implicaria a aquisição de novos equipamentos. Futuramente propõe-se a avaliação dos vários tipos de reagentes usados no tingimento de couro de forma a aplicar no tratamento aqueles que produzam as características desejadas no produto final e a que apresentem um menor resultado de CQO. Propõe-se também o estudo de viabilidade da remoção de crómio dos banhos de recurtume e consequente avaliação da aplicabilidade de um tratamento biológico em substituição ou como complemento do tratamento existente.

Crisis-affected communities and global organizations for international aid are becoming increasingly digital as consequence geotechnology popularity. Humanitarian sector changed in profound ways by adopting new technical approach to obtain information from area with difficult geographical or political access. Since 2011, turkey is hosting a growing number of Syrian refugees along southeastern region. Turkish policy of hosting them in camps and the difficulty created by governors to international aid group expeditions to get information, made such international organizations to investigate and adopt other approach in order to obtain information needed. They intensified its remote sensing approach. However, the majority of studies used very high-resolution satellite imagery (VHRSI). The study area is extensive and the temporal resolution of VHRSI is low, besides it is infeasible only using these sensors as unique approach for the whole area. The focus of this research, aims to investigate the potentialities of mid-resolution imagery (here only Landsat) to obtain information from region in crisis (here, southeastern Turkey) through a new web-based platform called Google Earth Engine (GEE). Hereby it is also intended to verify GEE currently reliability once the Application Programming Interface (API) is still in beta version. The finds here shows that the basic functions are trustworthy. Results pointed out that Landsat can recognize change in the spectral resolution clearly only for the first settlement. The ongoing modifications vary for each case. Overall, Landsat demonstrated high limitations, but need more investigations and may be used, with restriction, as a support of VHRSI.

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic resistance is the main factor that affects the efficacy of current therapeutic regimens against Helicobacter pylori. This study aimed to determine the rates of resistance to efficacy clarithromycin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, levofloxacin and metronidazole among H. pylori strains isolated from Turkish patients with dyspepsia. METHODS: H. pylori was cultured from corpus and antrum biopsies that were collected from patients with dyspeptic symptoms, and the antimicrobial susceptibility of H. pylori was determined using the E-test (clarithromycin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, metronidazole and levofloxacin) according to the EUCAST breakpoints. Point mutations in the 23S rRNA gene of clarithromycin-resistant strains were investigated using real-time PCR. RESULTS: A total of 98 H. pylori strains were isolated, all of which were susceptible to amoxicillin and tetracycline. Of these strains, 36.7% (36/98) were resistant to clarithromycin, 35.5% (34/98) were resistant to metronidazole, and 29.5% (29/98) were resistant to levofloxacin. Multiple resistance was detected in 19.3% of the isolates. The A2143G and A2144G point mutations in the 23S rRNA-encoding gene were found in all 36 (100%) of the clarithromycin-resistant strains. Additionally, the levofloxacin MIC values increased to 32 mg/L in our H. pylori strains. Finally, among the clarithromycin-resistant strains, 27.2% were resistant to levofloxacin, and 45.4% were resistant to metronidazole. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that treatment failure after clarithromycin- or levofloxacin-based triple therapy is not surprising and that metronidazole is not a reliable agent for the eradication of H. pylori infection in Turkey.

RESUMO - Este estudo teve como principal objectivo a caracterização das atitudes e da adopção de medidas de protecção em períodos de calor e em particular conhecer aquelas que efectivamente foram adoptadas durante a onda de calor de Agosto de 2003 (29 de Julho a 15 de Agosto). Foi realizado um inquérito por via postal, aplicando um questionário aos indivíduos de 18 e mais anos das unidades de alojamento (UA), que constituem a amostra ECOS (Em Casa Observamos Saúde) do Observatório Nacional de Saúde. Estudaram-se 769 indivíduos, o que correspondeu a 25,6% da totalidade dos indivíduos elegíveis nas UA. Uma vez que a amostra ECOS não é autoponderada, foram ponderados os resultados das unidades de alojamento pela variável do Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) «número de famílias clássicas» por região e pela «população residente segundo o nível de instrução» obtidas pelos censos de 2001. Os comportamentos referidos como adoptados em épocas de calor que apresentaram maiores percentagens foram «tomar duches ou banhos» (84,6%), «ingestão de líquidos» (79,6%), «uso de roupa leve, larga e clara» (73,2%) e «tomar refeições leves» (53,7%). Durante a onda de calor de 2003, a maior parte da população (92,5%) leu, ouviu ou viu informação sobre os cuidados a ter durante a onda de calor, tendo sido a televisão (95,2%), a rádio (56,3%) e os jornais (49,3%) os meios de comunicação social mais referidos. Cerca de metade da população (51,4%) informou alguém, fundamentalmente a família, sobre os cuidados a ter. Com efeito, durante esta onda de calor verificou-se um maior cuidado em relação a comportamentos mais prejudiciais em épocas de maior calor. Por um lado, a população portuguesa andou menos ao sol (49,4%), fez menos viagens de carro/transportes à hora do calor (39,8%), realizou menos actividades que exigiriam esforço físico (32,5%) e também houve alguma preocupação em beber menos bebidas alcoólicas (26,5%). Por outro lado, aumentaram os comportamentos que já são mais habituais durante o período de Verão, tais como abrir as janelas durante a noite (40,8%), tomar refeições leves (46,7%), tomar mais duches ou banhos (58,5%), o uso de roupas leves largas e claras (42,5%) e o uso de ventoinhas (37,8%). A alteração do comportamento andar ou estar ao sol sem restrições aumenta com o número de meios de comunicação onde se obteve informação. Abrir as janelas de casa durante a noite e tomar duches ou banhos apresentou uma associação com o número de meios de comunicação onde se obteve informação e com o número de pessoas que prestaram informação. Ingerir líquidos e usar roupa leve, larga e clara mostrou também uma dependência do número de meios de comunicação onde se obteve informação.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of propafenone on the contractile function of latissimus dorsi muscle isolated from rats in an organ chamber. METHODS: We studied 20 latissimus dorsi muscles of Wistar rats and divided them into 2 groups: group I (n=10), or control group - we studied the feasibility of muscle contractility; group II (n=10), in which the contralateral muscles were grouped - we analyzed the effect of propafenone on muscle contractility. After building a muscle ring, 8 periods of sequential 2-minute baths were performed, with intervals of preprogrammed electrical stimulation using a pacemaker of 50 stimuli/min. In group II, propafenone, at the concentration of 9.8 µg/mL, was added to the bath in period 2 and withdrawn in period 4. RESULTS: In group I, no significant depression in muscle contraction occurred up to period 5 (p>0.05). In group II, a significant depression occurred in all periods, except between the last 2 periods (p<0.05). Comparing groups I and II only in period 1, which was a standard period for both groups, we found no significant difference (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Propafenone had a depressing effect on the contractile function of latissimus dorsi muscle isolated from rats and studied in an organ chamber.

Plasma-cell neoplasms are classically categorized into four groups as: multiple myeloma (MM), plasma-cell leukemias, solitary plasmacytomas (SP) of the bone (SPB), and extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP). These tumors may be described as localized or diffuse in presentation. Localized plasma-cell neoplasms are rare, and include SP of the skeletal system, accounting for 2-5% of all plasma-cell neoplasms, and EMP of soft tissue, accounting for approximately 3% of all such neoplasms. SP is defined as a solitary mass of neoplastic plasma cells either in the bone marrow or in various soft tissue sites. There appears to be a continuum in which SP often progresses to MM. The main treatment modality for SP is radiation therapy (RT). However, there are no conclusive data in the literature on the optimal AT dose for SP. This review describes the interrelationship of plasma-cell neoplasms, and attempts to determine the minimal RT dose required to obtain local control.

We report on a consanguineous, Afghani family with two sisters affected with characteristic facial features, multiple contractures, progressive joint and skin laxity, hemorrhagic diathesis following minor trauma and multisystem fragility-related manifestations suggestive of a diagnosis of musculocontractural Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). This novel form of connective tissue disorder was recently reported in patients of Japanese, Turkish, and Indian descent who were formerly classified as having EDS type VIB and has now been recognized to be a part of spectrum including patients previously classified as having adducted thumb-clubfoot syndrome. We identified a previously unreported mutation in the CHST14 gene, which codes for the enzyme dermatan 4-O-sulfotransferase. We discuss the prenatal presentation, detailed clinical manifestations, and neurological findings in two sisters with this newly described musculocontractural EDS-CHST14 type. We demonstrate that fibroblasts from one of our patients produce more chondroitin sulfate than normal and show lower than normal deposition of collagens I and II and fibrillin 1-containing microfibrills. These findings suggest that the imbalance in the glycosaminoglycan content in developing tissues might interfere with normal deposition of other extracellular matrix components and ultimately contribute to the development of the phenotype observed in these patients. Furthermore, we ruled out the contribution of intrinsic platelet factors to the bleeding diathesis observed in some affected individuals. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Adiponectin has a variety of metabolic effects on obesity, insulin sensitivity, and atherosclerosis. To identify genes influencing variation in plasma adiponectin levels, we performed genome-wide linkage and association scans of adiponectin in two cohorts of subjects recruited in the Genetic Epidemiology of Metabolic Syndrome Study. The genome-wide linkage scan was conducted in families of Turkish and southern European (TSE, n = 789) and Northern and Western European (NWE, N = 2,280) origin. A whole genome association (WGA) analysis (500K Affymetrix platform) was carried out in a set of unrelated NWE subjects consisting of approximately 1,000 subjects with dyslipidemia and 1,000 overweight subjects with normal lipids. Peak evidence for linkage occurred at chromosome 8p23 in NWE subjects (lod = 3.10) and at chromosome 3q28 near ADIPOQ, the adiponectin structural gene, in TSE subjects (lod = 1.70). In the WGA analysis, the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) most strongly associated with adiponectin were rs3774261 and rs6773957 (P < 10(-7)). These two SNPs were in high linkage disequilibrium (r(2) = 0.98) and located within ADIPOQ. Interestingly, our fourth strongest region of association (P < 2 x 10(-5)) was to an SNP within CDH13, whose protein product is a newly identified receptor for high-molecular-weight species of adiponectin. Through WGA analysis, we confirmed previous studies showing SNPs within ADIPOQ to be strongly associated with variation in adiponectin levels and further observed these to have the strongest effects on adiponectin levels throughout the genome. We additionally identified a second gene (CDH13) possibly influencing variation in adiponectin levels. The impact of these SNPs on health and disease has yet to be determined.

There is a considerable discrepancy between the number of identified occupational-related bladder cancer cases and the estimated numbers particularly in emerging nations or less developed countries where suitable approaches are less or even not known. Thus, within a project of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centres in Occupational Health, a questionnaire of the Dortmund group, applied in different studies, was translated into more than 30 languages (Afrikaans, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Korean, Latvian, Malay, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese/Brazilian, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovak, Spanish, Spanish/Mexican, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese). The bipartite questionnaire asks for relevant medical information in the physician's part and for the occupational history since leaving school in the patient's part. Furthermore, this questionnaire is asking for intensity and frequency of certain occupational and non-occupational risk factors. The literature regarding occupations like painter, hairdresser or miner and exposures like carcinogenic aromatic amines, azo dyes, or combustion products is highlighted. La station touristique représente un espace urbain consacré principalement au tourisme, tout en comprenant également une population résidente permanente. Du point de vue de la gestion des réseaux urbains de l'eau, cette caractéristique induit pour ce type de lieu des usages propres à tout espace urbain mais également des spécificités liées à la forte fluctuation saisonnière de la population résidente ou encore à la présence d'usages particuliers tels que l'irrigation des golfs, la production de neige artificielle ou le thermalisme. Dès lors, la planification de l'approvisionnement est délicate et peu prévisible. Ces difficultés sont renforcées par le fait que les concentrations temporelles de la demande coïncident généralement avec des périodes de stress hydrique notable. Dans le cas de stations balnéaires, les pics de fréquentation interviennent en général durant l'été lorsque la ressource en eau est peu disponible. Le problème est similaire dans les stations touristiques de montagne où l'eau est généralement indisponible car stockée sous forme de neige durant les mois de forte fréquentation. De plus, ces difficultés sont souvent renforcées par la localisation géographique des stations touristiques, fréquemment situées dans des espaces sensibles du point de vue de la ressource en eau, avec des situations de pénuries temporelles, voire structurelles. Ces problématiques propres à la plupart des stations touristiques mènent souvent à de fortes rivalités entre, d'une part, les différents usages touristiques de la ressource, et d'autre part, les usages autochtones et touristiques. Les particularités liées au tourisme tendent ainsi à renforcer les rivalités entre différents types de secteurs d'activité (approvisionnement en eau potable, tourisme, hydroélectricité, enneigement artificiel, irrigation, etc.). Ces différents usages de la ressource mis en concurrence nécessitent dès lors la mise en oeuvre de réglementations structurées à travers des politiques publiques ainsi que des droits de propriété et selon des composantes nationales, régionales et locales ; soit un cadre institutionnel que nous proposons d'appeler Régime Institutionnel de Ressource (RIR) (Knoepfel et al. 2001, 2007). A travers cette thèse de doctorat, nous répondons à différentes questions de recherche. Nous tentons d'abord de comprendre comment ces différents RIR sont-ils mis en oeuvre dans le cadre d'espaces touristiques ? Comment ceux-ci sont-ils concrétisés par les acteurs et quels sont leurs effets en termes de durabilité technique, environnementale, sociale et économique des réseaux urbains de l'eau ? Nous questionnons ensuite les effets du tourisme sur la gestion des infrastructures de réseau à l'échelle de la station touristique et de son bassin versant et nous interrogeons sur les effets du tourisme en termes de gestion des eaux urbaines. Nous portons notre attention sur deux stations touristiques situées dans deux contextes institutionnels différents (Crans-Montana en Suisse et Morzine-Avoriaz en France) et y étudions trois types de régimes institutionnels en particulier : la régie directe (gestion publique), l'affermage (gestion déléguée) et la gestion privée des infrastructures. Les résultats de cette thèse de doctorat indiquent tout d'abord dans quelle mesure le tourisme modifie de façon significative la perception et les modalités de gestion de la ressource en eau et des infrastructures. Ils montrent ensuite que l'espace fonctionnel de la gestion de ces infrastructures correspond rarement aux limites du réseau hydrographique naturel et quelles en sont les implications en termes de durabilité. Enfin, la comparaison de différents régimes institutionnels révèle les forces et les faiblesses de chaque modèle de gestion dans le cas spécifique des stations touristiques et également les différentes solutions adoptées localement pour la mise en oeuvre d'un arrangement institutionnel permettant un usage plus ou moins durable des infrastructures de réseau et du réseau hydrographique naturel. - Tourism resort represents an urban area mainly dedicated to tourism while including at the same time a permanent residential population. From the point of view of urban water networks, this characteristic induces a strong seasonal fluctuation of residential population and involves special water uses such as golf irrigation, production of artificial snow or functioning of thermal baths. Therefore, water supply planning can be tricky and difficult to predict. These difficulties are reinforced by the fact that temporary concentrations of water demand coïncidé generally with periods of water stress. In the case of seaside resorts, frequenting peaks arise in general during summer when water resource is less available. The problem is similar in mountainous tourist resorts where water is generally unavailable as it is stored as snow during months of highest frequenting. Furthermore, these difficulties are often reinforced by resorts' geographical localisations, which are often situated in sensitive areas in terms of temporary or structural water shortages. These problematic issues often lead to strong rivalries between tourists' water uses on the one hand, and between locals and tourists uses on the other hand. Thus, features of tourism tend to reinforce rivalries between different sectors of activity (supply of drinking water, tourism, hydroelectricity, artificial snow, irrigation, etc.). These different and competing water uses need the implementation of rules structured through public policies and property rights and through national, regional and local legal components; We propose to call this framework as an Institutional Resource Regime (IRR) (Knoepfel et al. 2001, 2007, 2009). Through this PhD thesis, we answer different research questions. We firstly aim to understand how those different IRR are implemented within tourism spaces? How do actors materialize them and what are their effects in term of technical, environmental, social and economical sustainability of urban water networks? We then, investigate effects of tourism on water networks infrastructures' management at the scale of the tourist resort and its river basin. We focus our attention on two tourist resorts situated within two different institutional contexts (Crans-Montana, Switzerland and Morzine-Avoriaz, France) and study three types of institutional regime in particular: public, delegated and private management of infrastructures. Results of this PhD thesis indicate firstly how tourism modifies in a significant way the perception and management modalities of water resource and infrastructures. Results also show that functional space of infrastructures management rarely matches with the limits of the natural river basin and indicates what it means in terms of sustainability. Finally, the comparison of different institutional regimes reveals the strengths and weakness of each management model in the specific case of tourist resorts and shows the different solutions in locally implementing an institutional arrangement for a more or less sustainable management of network infrastructures and natural water system.

Controlling the extracellular volume in hemodialysis patients is a difficult task. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of different methods of stimulated sweating to reduce mean interdialytic weight gain (IWG), to improve blood pressure regulation, and potassium/urea balance. Two center, crossover pilot study. In Lausanne, hemodialysis patients took four hot-water baths a week, 30 minutes each, on nondialysis days during 1 month. In Sfax, patients visited the local Hammam Center four times a week. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded, and weekly laboratory analysis was performed. Results were compared with a preceding 1-month control period. In Lausanne, five patients (all men, median age 55 years) participated. Bathing temperature was (mean ± standard deviation) 41.2 ± 3°C and sweating-induced weight loss 600 ± 500 g. Mean IWG (control vs. intervention period) decreased from 2.3 ± 0.9 to 1.8 ± 1 kg (P = 0.004), Systolic blood pressure from 139 ± 21 to 136 ± 22 mmHg (P = 0.4), and diastolic blood pressure form 79 ± 12 to 75 ± 13 mmHg (P = 0.08); antihypertensive therapy could be reduced from 2.8 ± 0.4 to 1.9 ± 0.5 antihypertensive drugs per patient (P = 0.01). In Sfax (n = 9, median age 46 years), weight loss per Hammam session was 420 ± 100 g. No differences were found in IWG or BP, but predialysis serum potassium level decreased from 5.9 ± 0.8 to 5.5 ± 0.9 mmol/L (P = 0.04) and urea from 26.9 ± 6 to 23.1 ± 6 mmol/L (P = 0.02). Hot-water baths appear to be a safe way to reduce IWG in selected hemodialysis patients. Hammam visits reduce serum potassium and urea levels, but not IWG. More data in larger patient groups are necessary before definite conclusion can be drawn.

This is a participant study, quasi-experimental, of a before and after type. A quantitative approach of biophysiological measures was used, represented by the saturation of oxygen measured by pulse oximeter (SpO2), and recorded on three occasions: before, during and after the bedbath in critically ill patients hospitalized at the ICU of a University Hospital in Brazil. Objective: to compare the SpO2 in various stages of the bath, with and without control of water temperature. Data collection was performed between December 2007 and April 2008 on a convenience sample consisting of 30 patients aged over 18 who had classification in TISS-28 from level II. Results show that water temperature control means a lower variation of SpO2 (p<0.05). No marked differences in variation of saturation between men and women or between age groups were established. In conclusion, heated and constant water temperature during the bedbath is able to minimize the fall of SpO2 that occurs while handling patients during procedures.
