The protonation effect on the vibrational and electronic spectra of 4-aminoazobenzene and 4-(dimethylamino)azobenzene was investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy, and the results were discussed on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations. Although this class of molecular systems has been investigated in the past concerning the azo-hydrazone tautomerism, the present work is the first to use CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations to unveil the structure of both tautomers as well the nature of the molecular orbitals involved in chromophoric moieties responsible for the resonance Raman enhancement patterns. More specifically both the resonance Raman and theoretical results show clearly that in the neutral species, the charge transfer transition involves mainly the azo moiety, whereas in the protonated forms there is a great difference, depending on the tautomer. In fact, for the azo tautomer the transition is similar to that observed in the corresponding neutral species, whereas in the hydrazone tautomer such a transition is much more delocalized due to the contribution of the quinoid structure. The characterization of protonated species and the understanding of the tautomerization mechanism are crucial for controlling molecular properties depending on the polarity and pH of the medium.

The possibility of variable stoichiometry and the high mobility of oxygen in the CuOx planes of SmBa2Cu3O7 give rise to a rich phase diagram. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature can distinguish among the different atomic jumps, which occur in the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, it is reported anelastic relaxation measurements in SmBa2Cu3O7, above room temperature, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies around 40 Hz. The mobility of oxygen atoms in the CuOx planes in the various phases has been discussed and the thermally activated peak of elastic energy dissipation observed around 500 K was interpreted in that framework. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques have been applied to characterize the surface composition and structure of a series of CuO-TiO2-CeO2 catalysts. For a small loading of cerium, ceria was mainly dispersed on the titania surface and a minor amount of CeO2 crystallite appeared. At higher loading of cerium, the CeO2 phase increased and the atomic Ce/Ti ratio values were smaller than the nominal composition, as a consequence of cerium agglomeration. This result suggests that only a fraction of cerium can be spread on the titania surface. For titanium-based mixed oxide, we observed that cerium is found as Ce3+ uniquely on the surface. The atomic Cu/(Ce+Ti) ratio values showed no influence from cerium concentration on the dispersion of copper, although the copper on the surface was shown to be dependent on the cerium species. For samples with a high amount of cerium, XPS analysis indicated the raise of second titanium species due cerium with spin-orbit components at higher binding energies than those presented by Ti4+ in a tetragonal structure. The structural results obtained by XAS are consistent with those obtained by XRD and XPS. (C) 2001 American Vacuum Society.

We report here the utilization of atomid layer deposition to passivate surface map states in mosoporous TiO2 nanoparticles for solid state dye sensitized solar cells based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). By depositing ZrO2 films with angstrom-level precision, coating the mesoporous TiO2 produces over a two-fold enhancement in short-circuit current density, as compared to a control device. Impedance spectroscopy measurements provide evidence that the ZrO2 coating reduces recombination lossed at the TiO2/spiro-OMeTAD interface and passivates localized surface states. Low-frequency negative capacitances, frequently observed in nanocomposite solar cells, have been associated with the surface-state mediated charge transfer from TiO2 to the spiro-OMeTAD.

Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were modified with poly(glutamic acid) acid films prepared using three different procedures: glutamic acid monomer electropolymerization (MONO), evaporation of poly(glutamic acid) (PAG) and evaporation of a mixture of poly(glutamic acid)/glutaraldehyde (PAG/GLU). All three films showed good adherence to the electrode surface. The performance of the modified GCE was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, and the films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The three poly(glutamic acid) modified GCEs were tested using the electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid and a decrease of the overpotential and the improvement of the oxidation peak current was observed. The PAG modified electrode surfaces gave the best results. AFM morphological images showed a polymeric network film formed by well-defined nanofibres that may undergo extensive swelling in solution, allowing an easier electron transfer and higher oxidation peaks. One of the most studied ceramic superconductors for application has been, undoubtedly, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Although being a multiphasic material, it has proved to have great advantages compared to other ceramic systems. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature call distinguish among different atomic jumps that occur inside the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, mechanical loss spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bar shaped samples, made by a conventional method, have been measured between 80 and 600 K, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies below 50 Hz, for samples annealed in vacuum up to 600 K. Possible relaxation mechanisms are proposed to explain the origin of the mechanical-loss peaks observed 300 and 500 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Titanium dioxide (rutile) has a lot of interesting and useful features and hence is widely utilized for application. It has been used as white pigment, photocatalyst, biocompatible material and semiconductor material used in solar battery. In semiconducting TiO2 oxygen vacancies are said to play an important role in the electrical conduction. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature can distinguish among the different atomic jumps, which occur in the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, it is reported anelastic relaxation measurements in TiO2 samples using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies around 40Hz, in the temperature range between -173°C to 330°C with heating rate of 1°C/min. The results shown a reduction in the elasticity modulus with the increase in the corn starch content used for this consolidation.

Engineering ceramics have found use in many applications, such as engine parts, ball bearings, artificial bone and hip replacements and gyroscopes, because of their good chemical inertness, hardness, high temperature stability and excellent wear resistance. Oxide ceramic may meet these demands. Alumina (Al2O3) ceramics offer a high potential for many engineering applications, such as wear- and/or corrosion-resistant components, and as material for substrates or housings in microelectronic devices. Alumina is used among other things for seal ring, draw-cones, guides, water mixing tapes, bearing parts, medical prostheses and cutting tools. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature can distinguish among the different atomic jumps, which occurs in the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, it is reported anelastic relaxation measurements in Al2O3 samples using commercial starch. These measurements were carried out in a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies around 40 Hz. The results shown strongly influence of the type of forming in the elastic modulus obtained by anelastic relaxation measurements.

Since the discovery of the high Tc superconductors, several works have been made about the different properties of these materials. Anelastic spectroscopy experiments are sensitive tools to the study of defects in solids and phase transitions. By this technique, we can distinguish the different types of atomic jumps that happen to different temperatures. The intensity of the peaks in the anelastic spectrum and the step in the torsional modulus are related with the concentration of the relaxing entities, and the position of the peaks is determined by its mobility. In this paper, the study on Bi and Sm based superconducting oxides was made by anelastic relaxation measurements using a torsion pendulum. The samples were submitted to successive thermal treatments in high vacuum, in the temperature range between 100 K and 650 K, heating rate about 1 K/min. For Bi based superconducting oxides the results shown two peaks, that were associated to interstitial oxygen mobility and to orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition. For Sm based superconducting oxides the results shown a relaxation peak that was attributed to the jumps of the oxygen atoms in the inter-chains O1 and 05 of the lattice.

This study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetics of a hematoporphyrin derivative in colonic tumors induced by dimethylhydrazine and adjacent normal colon in Wistar rats using an in vivo fluorescence spectroscopy technique. In conventional clinical application of photodynamic therapy, the interval between photosensitizer (PS) administration and lesion illumination is often standardized without taking into account variations due to the type or localization of the tumor and intrinsic differences in the microcirculation and vascular permeability of each target organ. The analysis of the fluorescence spectra was based on the intensity of porphyrin emission band centered at around 620nm in normal colon and colon tumors. The photosensitizer fluorescence intensity rapidly grew for carcinoma and normal colon, reaching the maximum values 1 and 3 hours after PS injection, respectively. Data presented here allow us to verify that the best compromise between selectivity and drug concentration for colon carcinoma in rats took place in the interval between 1 to 4 h after PS injection.
