Calcareous and siliceous biogenic components have been studied in deep-water iron-manganese nodules from the northern and southern Pacific Ocean. Calcareous material consists of foraminifera remains, calcareous algae, and coccolithophorids, whereas siliceous material consists of remains of radiolarians and diatoms, as well as sponge spicules. Structures similar in morphology to coccal and filiform bacteria have been found in both outer and inner sections of the nodules indicating that microorganisms may be directly or indirectly involved in their development.

The monograph presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies carried out in 1973 and 1976 during Cruises 54 and 58 of R/V "Vityaz" in the Eastern Indian Ocean. On the base of obtained data a description of topography, magnetic and gravity fields, structure of the sedimentary series and deep crustal structure of the East Indian Ridge, Central, West Australian and Cocos Basins, the Sunda Trench has been done. Materials on petrography, petrochemistry and geochemistry of igneous rocks in the region have been summarized. New geological and geophysical information has been compared with with DSDP materials. Tectonics and geological history of the Eastern Indian Ocean are under consideration.

Group composition of organic matter in recent ocean sediments with high Corg content has been studied in detail. It has been shown that organic matter in sediments with Corg content greater than 4% is present in the very earliest stages of transformation. Group composition of amino acids is practically similar to that of their main producer, namely phytoplankton. Organic matter of sediments with Corg content below 4% is, from this standpoint, more transformed and is close to organic matter in usual type sediments with similar Corg content.

Radiocarbon datings are used to calculate mean sedimentation rates of metalliferous sediments in the southern arid zone of the Pacific Ocean adjoining the axis of the East Pacific rise (20°S). Owing to low sedimentation rates and intense mixing, only averaged figures could be obtained for ages less than 16 ky. Sedimentation rate varies from 0.3 to about 1 cm/1000 years in the surface layer and is several times higher in the time interval from 20 ky to 45 ky ago. Formulas for calculating mean sedimentation rates with allowance for benthic mixing are presented.

On the basis of planktonic foraminifera study, thickness of Holocene sediments has been ascertained in 60 sediment cores from various regions of the Atlantic Ocean. Ratios of species reflect warming of the upper water layer at the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary over the entire ocean. The Holocene boundary can be determined not only from microfaunal data, but also from lithologic ones including textural and structural features. Increase in CaCO3 contents in Holocene sediments as compared to Pleistocene is from 5-7% to 60-70% in different parts of the ocean.
