Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of treatment, which is based in the grounds of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Despite the ancient history, it’s not completely widespread in Brazil, neither so comprehensive in veterinary medicine as used in humans. The technique of inserting needles into acupuncture points, can also be stimulated by heat, electrical stimulation or implants of metal, is mainly focused on neuromuscular disorders in small animals. The difficulty of comprehension of language and the lack of cientific bases restricted the possible applications of acupuncture. This work will address some of the clinical situations this complementary treatment can act, such as neurological, cardiorespiratory, reproductive, gastrointestinal, immunological, and postoperative intensive care

Acupuntura na abordagem da Síndrome da Cauda Equina em pequenos animais Trabalho

Nowadays, in any area that acts within the veterinary medicine, we talk a lot of specialists. Specialists in neurology, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, finally, more specialized in a subject, better is the veterinarian. However, on one hand to deepen the knowledge helped in the discovery of new diagnostics and treatments, secondly, a bit lost sight of the patient as a whole. Traditional Chinese medicine, one of whose branches is acupuncture, is aimed at exactly this approach to be fully alive, where all body is interconnected and the disease is not seen as the imbalance of one system, but, as the imbalance between our being and the environment external. Acupuncture is an alternative in the treatment of many diseases, among them Cauda Equina Syndrome, and consists of stimulating specific points on the body surface, which help the body return to its natural harmony. A Cauda Equina Syndrome is a frame subsequent to a neuromuscular spinal cord at the level of the spinal canal of the lower lumbar spine and sacral, whose treatment is almost always surgical. This study aims to show the relevance of acupuncture treatment in this condition and report the importance of the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine nowadays, even when their arms are not in the treatment of choice

Systhemic lupus erythematous is a imunomediated disorder witch affects primarly dogs between two and nine years. Clinical manifestations are very diverse, including renal signs, that may lead to chronic renal disease, and dermatologic and joint sings. Estudo da presença e importância atribuída aos animais nos artigos apresentados nos anais do Encontro Pesquisa em Educação Ambiental (EPEA)

Together with the increase of environmental degradation in the past few decades, the environmental education (EE) has emerged and grown all around the world. It is worrying the frequent assigning of stereotypes to the animals and the cases of disrespect to them. For these matters it was studied the presence and importance attributed to animals in the annals of six editions of an event of great significance in the field of Environmental Education, the meetings Pesquisa em Educação Ambiental (EPEAs). The animals were chosen for deserving more attention in the preservationist context, besides allowing the use of a great extent of activities in EE, regarding scholar and non-scholar organizations. The articles that presented descriptors related to animals in the title, keywords or abstract were analyzed in depth and characteristics such as segmentation of the studied population, locations where jobs tend to be performed, prevailing aspects and didactic material production, among others, were investigated and compared. It was also verified which current trends on Environmental Education currents are more frequently presented in the EPEAs articles, in order to map the Environmental Education in Brazil in the past few years, using as a basis an important theoretical framework in the area. Through the use of descriptors it was possible to define the articles that would be analyzed in depth, which is less than 6% of the total work published and represents that, until the sixth edition, the EPEAs have a minor amount of works concerning animal matters. In many of these articles animals were superficially worked, which demonstrates the necessity of approaches not only involving more the animals, but also addressing the complex environmental matter. Pesquisas em animais: uma reflexão bioética

Animal models are an important tool in scientific research. It is known that this practice must be based on bioethical principles in order to impose limits about pain and suffering, or for inspecting proceedings and research site. This study has as aim to evaluate and present current legislation ruling animal research in Brazil, comparing it with other countries, as well as fostering bioethical reflection about this issue. For this, we present current Brazilian legislation and we have carried out international literature review and discussion. The articles were searched in PubMed data base, using the key words "bioethics" and "animal welfare". Nineteen articles from 1997 to 2013 were included. It was concluded the evident contribution of animal research for scientific research in several fields. It is morally relevant for humans, as rational beings, to secure humane treatment to animals contributing to research. The safest way to follow this path is establishing clear norms and studies well designed, involving society for assigning ethical norms. Thus, animal welfare would be guarantee.

Tratamento biológico de fraturas ósseas com placa minimamente invasiva em pequenos animais: revisão sistemática

Objetivo: revisar sistematicamente a eficácia da técnica denominada osteossíntese com placa minimamente invasiva (MIPO), recentemente utilizada em medicina veterinária, em pequenos animais, em relação ao tempo de união óssea, alinhamento do membro e complicações no trans e pós-operatório. Material e Métodos: análise e comparação de artigos científicos retrospectivos e prospectivos sobre a técnica MIPO, publicados nas bases de dados informatizadas PUBMED, LILACS, Scielo e ScienceDirect. Resultados: foram selecionados cinco artigos adequados aos critérios de inclusão proposto, dois prospectivos e três retrospectivos, todos publicados nos últimos seis anos e em língua inglesa. Com esses trabalhos realizou-se uma discussão e conclusão a respeito da aplicação da MIPO em pequenos animais. Conclusão: A hipótese de que a MIPO é eficaz é aceita. A MIPO é uma técnica segura e sua aplicação em pequenos animais tem demonstrado resultados satisfatórios. Porém, com os estudos realizados até o momento não é possível afirmar que a aplicação da MIPO é estatisticamente mais eficaz que as técnicas convencionais quando aplicada em cães e gatos

Educação ambiental e valores: um olhar para os animais venenosos

A partir do final da década de 1960 diversos grupos em várias partes do mundo passaram a reconhecer o que chamamos de crise ambiental. Desde então diversos setores sociais vêm buscando maneiras de minimizar ou mesmo reverter o processo de degradação ambiental. Diante dessa problemática, o processo educativo é constantemente apontado como uma das formas de enfrentamento de tal crise. Entretanto, para que a educação ambiental (EA) atinja seus objetivos consideramos que esta deve ser trabalhada sob uma perspectiva crítica, contemplando três dimensões: a dimensão dos conhecimentos, a dimensão dos valores éticos e estéticos e a dimensão da participação política. Dessa forma, a EA aparece como uma proposta de educação da sociedade que pode contribuir para a revisão dos atuais valores e ações praticados por esta. Contudo, muitas vezes o que se observa nas práticas educativas é a apresentação de uma natureza destituída de valores, exceto pelo valor instrumental, ou seja, pela sua adequação às necessidades humanas, um modelo fragmentador e antropocêntrico. Dentro desse contexto, os animais venenosos e peçonhentos são geralmente vistos como maléficos ao homem, sendo seus aspectos ecológicos subestimados ou ignorados. A partir dessas reflexões, percebe-se a importância da criação e manutenção de programas de EA com enfoque mais adequado dos animais venenosos e peçonhentos para que a relação da sociedade com tais animais, bem como com o meio ambiente como um todo possam se transformar. Nesse sentido, a presente proposta de pesquisa objetivou identificar a existência de programas educativos com enfoque em animais venenosos e peçonhentos, analisando-os e verificando se trabalhariam com as três dimensões da educação ambiental.
