- Objective The purpose of this research was to explore which demographic and health status variables moderated the relationship between psychological distress and three nutrition indicators: the consumption of fruits, vegetables and takeaway. - Method We analysed data from the 2009 Self-Reported Health Status Survey Report collected in the state of Queensland, Australia. Adults (N = 6881) reported several demographic and health status variables. Moderated logistic regression models were estimated separately for the three nutrition indicators, testing as moderators demographic (age, gender, educational attainment, household income, remoteness, and area-level socioeconomic status) and health status indicators (body mass index, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes status). - Results Several significant interactions emerged between psychological distress, demographic (age, area-level socioeconomic status, and income level), and health status variables (body mass index, diabetes status) in predicting the nutrition indicators. Relationships between distress and the nutrition indicators were not significantly different by gender, remoteness, educational attainment, high cholesterol status, and high blood pressure status. - Conclusions The associations between psychological distress and several nutrition indicators differ amongst population subgroups. These findings suggest that in distressed adults, age, area-level socio-economic status, income level, body mass index, and diabetes status may serve as protective or risk factors through increasing or decreasing the likelihood of meeting nutritional guidelines. Public health interventions for improving dietary behaviours and nutrition may be more effective if they take into account the moderators identified in this study rather than using global interventions.

Functional Imagery Training (FIT) is a new theory-based, manualized intervention that trains positive goal imagery. Multisensory episodic imagery of proximal personal goals is elicited and practised, to sustain motivation and compete with less functional cravings. This study tested the impact of a single session of FIT plus a booster phone call on snacking. In a stepped-wedge design, 45 participants who wanted to lose weight or reduce snacking were randomly assigned to receive a session of FIT immediately or after a 2-week delay. High-sugar and high-fat snacks were recorded using timeline follow back for the previous 3 days, at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks. At 2 weeks, snacking was lower in the immediate group than in the delayed group, and the reduction after FIT was replicated in the delayed group between 2 and 4 weeks. Frequencies of motivational thoughts about snack reduction rose following FIT for both groups, and this change correlated with reductions in snacking and weight loss. By showing that FIT can support change in eating behaviours, these findings show its potential as a motivational intervention for weight management.

The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) modulates many functions important for life, e.g., appetite and body temperature, and controls development of the neural system. Disturbed 5-HT function has been implicated in mood, anxiety and eating disorders. The serotonin transporter (SERT) controls the amount of effective 5-HT by removing it from the extracellular space. Radionuclide imaging methods single photon emission tomography (SPET) and positron emission tomography (PET) enable studies on the brain SERTs. This thesis concentrated on both methodological and clinical aspects of the brain SERT imaging using SPET. The first study compared the repeatability of automated and manual methods for definition of volumes of interest (VOIs) in SERT images. The second study investigated within-subject seasonal variation of SERT binding in healthy young adults in two brain regions, the midbrain and thalamus. The third study investigated the association of the midbrain and thalamic SERT binding with Bulimia Nervosa (BN) in female twins. The fourth study investigated the association of the midbrain and hypothalamic/thalamic SERT binding and body mass index (BMI) in monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs. Two radioligands for SERT imaging were used: [123I]ADAM (studies I-III) and [123I]nor-beta-CIT (study IV). Study subjects included young adult MZ and dizygotic (DZ) twins screened from the FinnTwin16 twin cohort (studies I-IV) and healthy young adult men recruited for study II. The first study validated the use of an automated brain template in the analyses of [123I]ADAM images and proved automated VOI definition more reproducible than manual VOI definition. The second study found no systematic within-subject variation in SERT binding between scans done in summer and winter in either of the investigated brain regions. The third study found similar SERT binding between BN women (including purging and non-purging probands), their unaffected female co-twins and other healthy women in both brain regions; in post hoc analyses, a subgroup of purging BN women had significantly higher SERT binding in the midbrain as compared to all healthy women. In the fourth study, MZ twin pairs were divided into twins with higher BMI and co-twins with lower BMI; twins with higher BMI were found to have higher SERT binding in the hypothalamus/thalamus than their leaner co-twins. Our results allow the following conclusions: 1) No systematic seasonal variation exists in the midbrain and thalamus between SERT binding in summer and winter. 2) In a population-based sample, BN does not associate with altered SERT status, but alterations are possible in purging BN women. 3) The higher SERT binding in MZ twins with higher BMIs as compared to their leaner co-twins suggests non-genetic association between acquired obesity and the brain 5-HT system, which may have implications on feeding behavior and satiety.

The prevalence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate in all age groups worldwide. Obesity is a serious health problem due to increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Although environmental factors play a major role in the development of obesity, the identification of rare monogenic defects in human genes have confirmed that obesity has a strong genetic component. Mutations have been identified in genes encoding proteins of the leptin-melanocortin signaling system, which has an important role in the regulation of appetite and energy balance. The present study aimed at identifying mutations and genetic variations in the melanocortin receptors 2-5 and other genes active on the same signaling pathway accounting for severe early-onset obesity in children and morbid obesity in adults. The main achievement of this thesis was the identification of melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) mutations in Finnish patients. Six pathogenic MC4R mutations (308delT, P299H, two S127L and two -439delGC mutations) were identified, corresponding to a prevalence of 3% in severe early-onset obesity. No obesity causing MC4R mutations were found among patients with adult-onset morbid obesity. The MC4R 308delT deletion is predicted to result in a grossly truncated nonfunctional receptor of only 107 amino acids. The C-terminal residues, which are important in MC4R cell surface targeting, are totally absent from the mutant 308delT receptor. In vitro functional studies supported a pathogenic role for the S127L mutation since agonist induced signaling of the receptor was impaired. Cell membrane localization of the S127L receptor did not differ from that of the wild-type receptor, confirming that impaired function of the S127L receptor was due to reduced signaling properties. The P299H mutation leads to intracellular retention of the receptor. The -439delGC deletion is situated at a potential nescient helix-loop-helix 2 (NHLH2) -binding site in the MC4R promoter. It was demonstrated that the transcription factor NHLH2 binds to the consensus sequence at the -439delGC site in vitro, possibly resulting in altered promoter activity. Several genetic variants were identified in the melanocortin-3 receptor (MC3R) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) genes. These polymorphisms do not explain morbid obesity, but the results indicate that some of these genetic variations may be modifying factors in obesity, resulting in subtle changes in obesity-related traits. A risk haplotype for obesity was identified in the ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) gene through a candidate gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping approach. An ENPP1 haplotype, composed of SNPs rs1800949 and rs943003, was shown to be significantly associated with morbid obesity in adults. Accordingly, the MC3R, POMC and ENPP1 genes represent examples of susceptibility genes in which genetic variants predispose to obesity. In conclusion, pathogenic mutations in the MC4R gene were shown to account for 3% of cases with severe early-onset obesity in Finland. This is in line with results from other populations demonstrating that mutations in the MC4R gene underlie 1-6% of morbid obesity worldwide. MC4R deficiency thus represents the most common monogenic defect causing human obesity reported so far. The severity of the MC4-receptor defect appears to be associated with time of onset and the degree of obesity. Classification of MC4R mutations may provide a useful tool when predicting the outcome of the disease. In addition, several other genetic variants conferring susceptibility to obesity were detected in the MC3R, MC4R, POMC and ENPP1 genes.

Previous research has shown that action tendencies to approach alcohol may be modified using computerized ApproacheAvoidance Task (AAT), and that this impacted on subsequent consumption. A recent paper in this journal (Becker, Jostman, Wiers, & Holland, 2015) failed to show significant training effects for food in three studies: Nor did it find effects on subsequent consumption. However, avoidance training to high calorie foods was tested against a control rather than Approach training. The present study used a more comparable paradigm to the alcohol studies. It randomly assigned 90 participants to ‘approach’ or ‘avoid’ chocolate images on the AAT, and then asked them to taste and rate chocolates. A significant interaction of condition and time showed that training to avoid chocolate resulted in faster avoidance responses to chocolate images, compared with training to approach it. Consistent with Becker et al.'s Study 3, no effect was found on amounts of chocolate consumed, although a newly published study in this journal (Schumacher, Kemps, & Tiggemann, 2016) did do so. The collective evidence does not as yet provide solid basis for the application of AAT training to reduction of problematic food consumption, although clinical trials have yet to be conducted.

Abstract The modern food system and sustainable development form a conceptual combination that suggests sustainability deficits in the ways we deal with food consumption and production - in terms of economic relations, environmental impacts and nutritional status of western population. This study explores actors’ orientations towards sustainability by taking into account actors’ embedded positions within structures of the food system, actors’ economic relations and views about sustainability as well as their possibilities for progressive activities. The study looks particularly at social dynamics for sustainability within primary production and public consumption. If actors within these two worlds were to express converging orientations for sustainability, the system dynamics of the market would enable more sustainable growth in terms of production dictated by consumption. The study is based on a constructivist research approach with qualitative text analyses. The data consisted of three text corpora, the ‘local food corpus’, the ‘catering corpus’ and the ‘mixed corpus’. The local food actors were interviewed about their economic exchange relations. The caterers’ interviews dealt with their professional identity for sustainability. Finally, the mixed corpus assembled a dialogue as a participatory research approach, which was applied in order to enable researcher and caterer learning about the use of organic milk in public catering. The data were analysed for theoretically conceptualised relations, expressing behavioural patterns in actors’ everyday work as interpreted by the researcher. The findings were corroborated by the internal and external communities of food system actors. The interpretations have some validity, although they only present abstractions of everyday life and its rich, even opaque, fabric of meanings and aims. The key findings included primary producers’ social skilfulness, which enabled networking with other actors in very different paths of life, learning in order to promote one’s trade, and trusting reflectively in partners in order to extend business. These activities expanded the supply chain in a spiral fashion by horizontal and vertical forward integration, until large retailers were met for negotiations on a more equal or ‘other regarding’ basis. This kind of chain level coordination, typically building around the core of social and partnership relations, was coined as a socially overlaid network. It supported market access of local farmers, rooted in their farms, who were able to draw on local capital and labour in promotion of competitive business; the growth was endogenous. These kinds of chains – one conventional and one organic – were different from the strategic chain, which was more profit based and while highly competitive, presented exogenous growth as it depended on imported capital and local employees. However, the strategic chain offered learning opportunities and support for the local economy. The caterers exhibited more or less committed professional identity for sustainability within their reach. The facilitating and balanced approaches for professional identities dealt successfully with local and organic food in addition to domestic food, and also imported food. The co-operation with supply chains created innovative solutions and savings for the business parties to be shared. The rule-abiding approach for sustainability only made choices among organic supply chains without extending into co-operation with actors. There were also more complicated and troubled identities as juggling, critical and delimited approaches for sustainability, with less productive efforts due to restrictions such as absence of organisational sustainability strategy, weak presence of local and organic suppliers, limited understanding about sustainability and no organisational resources to develop changes towards a sustainable food system. Learning in the workplace about food system reality in terms of supply chain co-operation may prove to be a change engine that leads to advanced network operations and a more sustainable food system. The convergence between primary producers and caterers existed to an extent allowing suggestion that increased clarity about sustainable consumption and production by actors could be approached using advanced tools. The study looks for introduction of more profound environmental and socio-economic knowledge through participatory research with supply chain actors in order to promote more sustainable food systems. Resumen: En este trabajo, sostenemos que América Latina está atravesando un ciclo de protesta ambiental, como resultado de dos fuerzas opuestas. Por un lado, el aumento del apetito global por los recursos naturales –alimentos, fibras, minerales, energía– ha intensificado la presión sobre el ambiente en la región. Tras décadas de globalización neoliberal, las empresas transnacionales son actores clave en estos procesos. Por otro lado, la sociedad civil y los movimientos sociales están bien organizados y son muy activos en términos de la respuesta a los riesgos sociales y ambientales derivados de los mismos, tanto en términos de los recursos materiales como de los discursivos de que disponen. Nuestro análisis se sitúa en la confluencia de tres perspectivas teóricas: la teoría de los sistemas mundiales, la política contenciosa y la resistencia a las tecnologías.

Resumen: En el pensamiento de Santo Tomás de Aquino, la Filosofía Moral y la Teología Moral tienen al bien como concepto central, es decir, el ser en cuanto apetecible y en cuanto fin de la tendencia o apetito. Lo anterior es debido a que lo bueno expresa el ser en cuanto se relaciona con el apetito y de este modo señala la capacidad del ser para mover la voluntad o una tendencia cualquiera hacia su fin. Es por esto que Santo Tomás sostiene con Aristóteles que el bien coincide con la noción de fin. Y es por la importancia de estos principios y por su repercusión en la moral y sobretodo en la explicación de la libertad moral, que este breve trabajo consiste en una profundización en las relaciones entre el bien, el fin y la naturaleza y algunas de sus aplicaciones a lo que se conoce como tendencia natural o apetito natural y la tendencia libre que se refiere a la voluntad sobre todo a la voluntad de la persona humana. No se trata de un intento por presentar todas las conclusiones que de estos principios se siguen, lo cual correspondería a la Filosofía o a la Teología Moral, sino más bien de una profundización en los principios metafísicos, para asentar los cimientos del orden moral.

Durante a temporada de nidação, fêmeas de tartarugas marinhas costumam reduzir ou cessar por completo a ingestão de alimentos. Este fato sugere que o armazenamento de energia e nutrientes para a reprodução ocorra durante o período que antecede a migração para os sítios reprodutivos, enquanto estes animais ainda se encontram nas áreas de alimentação. Do ponto de vista fisiológico, tartarugas em atividade reprodutiva são capazes de permanecer longos períodos em jejum. Fatores neuroendócrinos vêm sendo recentemente apontados como os mais relevantes para a manutenção da homeostase energética de todos os vertebrados; entre eles, a leptina (hormônio anorexígeno) e a grelina (peptídeo orexígeno). Com o objetivo de compreender o mecanismo de fome e saciedade nas tartarugas marinhas, investigamos os níveis séricos destes hormônios e de outros indicadores nutricionais em fêmeas de Eretmochelys imbricata desovando no litoral do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 41 tartarugas durante as temporadas reprodutivas de 2010/2011 e 2011/2012. Os níveis séricos de leptina diminuíram significativamente ao longo do período de nidação, de modo a explicar a busca por alimentos ao término da temporada. Ao mesmo tempo, registramos uma tendência crescente nos níveis séricos de grelina, fator este que também justifica a remigração para as áreas de alimentação no fim do período. Não foram observadas tendências lineares para alguns dos parâmetros avaliados, entre eles: hematócrito, alanina aminotransferase (ALT), aspartato aminotransferase (AST), fosfatase alcalina (FA), gama glutamil transferase (GGT), lipoproteínas de baixa densidade (LDL) e lipoproteínas de alta densidade (HDL). É possível que a maior parte dos indicadores nutricionais tenha apresentado redução gradativa devido ao estresse fisiológico decorrente da vitelogênese e de repetidas oviposições. No entanto, é valido ressaltar que o quadro de restrição calórica por tempo prolongado é o principal responsável pelas alterações em índice de massa corpórea e padrões bioquímicos nestes animais.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o comportamento dos níveis plasmáticos de grelina, em relação aos fatores de risco cardiometabólico, em uma população multiétnica de eutróficos e de obesos..A grelina é um peptídeo produzido predominantemente pelas células oxínticas gástricas, que desempenha importante papel na homeostase energética, promovendo estímulo do apetite e aumento do peso corporal, além de participar do controle do metabolismo lipídico e glicídico, interagindo diretamente com os fatores de risco cardiometabólico. Este é um estudo transversal. Duzentos indivíduos entre 18 e 60 anos com diferentes graus de índice de massa corporal (IMC) compuseram a amostra, assim dividida: cem eutróficos (IMC < 25 kg/m2) e 100 obesos (IMC ≥ 30 kg/m2). Todos foram avaliados para parâmetros antropométricos, determinação da pressão arterial (aferida por método oscilométrico através de monitor automático) e variáveis metabólicas (métodos usuais certificados). A grelina acilada foi mensurada pela técnica de sanduíche ELISA; a leptina, pelo método Milliplex MAP. O marcador inflamatório proteína C reativa ultrassensível(PCRUS)foi estimado por nefelometria ultrassensível. A insulina foi determinada por quimioluminescência e o HOMA-IR calculado pelo produto insulinemia (U/ml) X níveis de glicemia de jejum (mmol/L) / 22.5. Foram excluídos do estudo aqueles com história de comorbidades crônicas, doenças inflamatórias agudas, dependência de drogas e em uso de medicação nos dez dias anteriores à entrada no estudo. As concentrações de grelina acilada mostraram tendência de redução ao longo dos graus de adiposidade (P<0,001); a leptina se comportou de maneira oposta (P<0,001). Os níveis de grelina se correlacionaram negativamente com IMC (r = -.36; P<0,001), circunferência da cintura (CC) (r=-.34; P<0,001), relação cintura/quadril (RCQ) (r=-.22; P=0,001), diâmetro abdominal sagital (DAS) (r=-.28; P<0,001), pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) (r=-.21; P=0,001), insulina (r=-.27; P<0,001), HOMA-IR (r=-.24; P=0,001) e PCRUS (r=-.29; P<0,001); e positivamente com o HDL-colesterol (r=.30; P<0,001).A PCRUS acompanhou o grau de resistência insulínica e os níveis de grelina também mostraram tendência de redução ao longo dos tercis de resistência insulínica (P=0,001). Em modelo de regressão linear múltipla as principais associações independentes da grelina acilada foram sexo feminino (P=0,005) e HDL-colesterol (P=0,008), ambos com associação positiva e IMC (P<0,001) (associação negativa). Esses achados apontam para uma associação da grelina acilada com melhor perfil metabólico, já que seus níveis se correlacionaram positivamente com HDL-colesterol e negativamente com indicadores de resistência insulínica e atividade inflamatória.

O desmame precoce (DP) leva ao desenvolvimento tardio de obesidade e de resistência insulínica (RI), sendo essas alterações prevenidas quando os animais são suplementados com cálcio. Sabe-se que os peptídeos gastrointestinais (GI) atuam na regulação do apetite e em diversos outros processos, podendo ter um papel relevante no desenvolvimento da obesidade e RI. Uma vez que os animais programados pelo DP são obesos e hiperfágicos, investigamos o perfil plasmático e tecidual de GLP-1, CCK e PYY (anorexígenos) de grelina (orexígena) e de seus receptores, assim como o efeito da dieta rica em cálcio sobre estes peptídeos a fim de identificar algum distúrbio no controle do apetite. Ao nascimento das proles, ratas lactantes Wistar foram separadas em: grupo DP (desmame precoce, n=20), filhotes cujas mães tiveram as mamas enfaixadas, impedindo o acesso da prole ao leite nos últimos 3 dias de lactação; e grupo C (controle, n=10), filhotes com livre acesso ao leite materno. Aos 120 dias, as proles DP foram subdivididas em: grupo DP, alimentado com ração comercial padrão, e grupo DPCa, alimentado com ração suplementada com cálcio (10g de carbonato de cálcio/Kg de ração). Os animais foram sacrificados aos 21 e 180 dias de vida. Quantificamos: GLP-1, CCK, PYY, grelina e citocinas (IL-6, TNF-α e IL-10) plasmáticas por ELISA; o conteúdo de grelina no estômago por ELISA e imunohistoquímica; o conteúdo de GLP-1 (intestino), GLP1-R (intestino, TA e ARC) e GHSR-1a (estômago e ARC) por Western blotting. Dados significativos quando p<0,05. Aos 21 dias, a prole DP apresentou aumento de GLP-1 no plasma (+168%) e GLP1-R no tecido adiposo (+72%), embora menor conteúdo de GLP-1 (-59%) e GLP1-R (-58%) no intestino. Não observamos alterações plasmáticas de grelina, CCK e PPY e no conteúdo de GHSR-1a no estômago aos 21 dias. Aos 180 dias, não verificamos diferença em nenhum dos peptídeos GI no plasma na prole DP. Porém, observamos menor conteúdo intestinal de GLP-1 tanto no grupo DP (-33%) quanto no DPCa (-32%), e uma tendência da grelina (+20%) e do GHSR-1a (+31%) a estarem elevados no estômago do grupo DP. Além de menor conteúdo de GLP1-R no tecido adiposo no grupo DP (-59%) e maior conteúdo de GLP1-R no intestino da prole DPCa (+62%). Não encontramos diferença entre os grupos na expressão de GLP1-R e GHSR-1a no ARC. O grupo DP apresentou ainda um perfil pró-inflamatório caracterizado por maior TNF-α e menor IL-10 no plasma. O DP alterou o perfil dos peptídeos GI a curto e longo prazos, o que pode ter colaborado para o desenvolvimento da obesidade, hiperfagia e RI neste modelo, uma vez que o GLP-1, único peptídeo alterado no período de imprinting, possui um possível papel adipogênico. A suplementação com cálcio foi capaz de reverter todas as alterações produzidas pelo DP. Evidenciamos, então, a importância do aleitamento materno na formação do comportamento alimentar e do balanço metabólico, bem como o papel da suplementação com cálcio no tratamento da obesidade e seus distúrbios associados, inclusive nas alterações do apetite.

No presente estudo, foram investigados o mecanismo central e a termogênese pelo tecido adiposo marrom (BAT) envolvidos com a perda de massa corporal (MC) observada com a administração de liraglutida (análoga do hormônio GLP1). Camundongos machos C57BL/6, foram alimentados com dieta padrão e tratados com veículo (SC) ou com liraglutida (SC/Lir) ou com dieta hiperlipídica e tratados com veículo (HF) ou com liraglutida (HF/Lir) Nossos resultados demostram que a administração de liraglutida aumentou o neuropeptídeo anorexigênico pro-opiomelanocortina no hipotálamo e diminuiu a expressão do mRNA da proteína supressora da sinalização de citocinas-3. A administração de liraglutida melhorou os níveis plasmáticos de adiponectina e diminuiu tanto a intolerância à glicose, como a resistência à insulina. Além do mais, tanto o grupo SC como o grupo HF, consumiram a mesma quantidade de comida, já o grupo SC/Lir comeu 17,5 menos comida comparado com o grupo SC e, da mesma forma, o grupo HF/lir diminuiu o consumo alimentar em 22,5% comparado com o grupo HF. A massa corporal final foi 8,5% menor no grupo SC/Lir comparado com o grupo SC e 16% menor no grupo HF comparado com o grupo HF/Lir. Além do mais, a administração de liraglutida aumentou o consumo de oxigênio e a produção de dióxido de carbono, e diminuiu o quociente respiratório. A liraglutida aumentou ainda os níveis do receptor beta 3 adrenérgico, da proteína desacopladora mitocondrial-1, do TC10 e do transportador de glicose estimulado pela insulina (GLUT)-4 no BAT. Em conclusão, a administração de liraglutida em camundongos obesos induzidos por dieta ativou a via anorexigênica, diminuindo o consumo alimentar, atuando sinergicamente com o aumento do gasto energético.

A cinetose tem elevada prevalência mundial, sendo mais frequente na infância e no sexo feminino, mas também pode acometer adultos. Resulta de um conflito vestíbulo-visual que incide durante a locomoção em diversos meios de transporte, como carro, ônibus, avião e barco. A forma mais dramática ocorre no transporte marítimo. Ocasiona náusea, vômito, sudorese, aumento da salivação, redução do apetite, hipotensão e mal-estar. Geralmente é produzida por estímulo vestibular, mas também pode ser induzida por estímulo visual. Tanto as acelerações lineares quanto angulares geram cinetose se persistirem por longo período em indivíduos susceptíveis. Recentemente ocorre maior interesse nessa afecção devido ao crescente uso de tecnologia de simulação de vôo e direção automobilística. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar as alterações vestibulares nos indivíduos adultos com cinetose. Trata-se de um estudo prospectivo, tipo série de casos. Os pacientes do ambulatório do Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto-UERJ foram avaliados através de anamnese geral e dirigida e exame fisico geral e otorrinolaringológico. Aqueles com histórico de doença otológica foram excluídos. Posteriormente realizaram audiometria e testes vestibulares com o registro gráfico dos nistagmos através da vectoeletronistagmografia. Nos resultados das provas calóricas encontramos 3,33% de pacientes com alteração de predomínio direcional, 6,67% com alteração de predomínio labiríntico, 3,33% com hiperreflexia esquerda, 3,33% com hiporreflexia direita e 3,33% com hiporreflexia esquerda. Encontrados algumas variações na análise dos movimentos sacádicos, nistagmo optocinético e rastreio pendular. Os resultados foram de encontro aos achados da literatura. Diante dos achados, foi observado que o exame otoneurológico com registro gráfico da cinetose mostrou-se muito importante para a avaliação dos pacientes com essa afecção. O estudo traz benefícios por contribuir para o melhor entendimento da cinetose e estimular novas pesquisas na área.

The effect of salinity (0, 10 & 20‰, water temperature 28 ± 1°C) and food ration (3 and 4.5% bw/day) on food consumption and growth of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (10.77 ± 0.21g) were investigated. Individual food consumption was measured using X-radiography technique. Salinities (0, 10 & 20‰) did not have significant effect on the growth rate of groups of Nile tilapia fed at different ration levels (3 & 4.5% bw/day). This study showed that the growth of all-male fish was significantly better than all-female fish for all three salinities and two rations. Salinities from 0 to 20‰ had no effect on growth performance of males or female fish. In the present study, it was evident that fish fed at 3% bw/day ration ate all the food offered and fish fed at 4.5% bw/day did not consumed all amounts. Also, growth performance did not significantly differ among fish fed at 3% bw/day ration level and reared at different salinities. Fish reared under higher salinities (20‰) and fed at higher ration (4.5% bw/day) level had skin lesions and injuries on their body. It was assumed that fish fed at higher ration under higher salinities (20‰) and maintained higher osmoregulatory costs together with osmotic stress may have a negative influence on the appetite of fish. Another possibility that may have affected the appetite could be the unionized ammonia levels that were high. The high-unionized ammonia levels combined with the osmotic stress may have been the cause, or have aided, development of skin lesions and injuries on the fish at higher salinities.

The occurrence of diseases is a significant setback for successful aquafarming. One of the common fish bacterial disease syndromes, Edwardsiellosis is caused by Edwardsiella tarda, a gram-negative, rod shaped bacterium associated with several diseases of marine and fresh water fish. In this study, an attempt was made to observe and analyze the onset of clinical symptoms and certain haematological parameters in Koi Carp, Cyprinus carpio L., following artificial infection with Edwardsiella tarda. The disease progress was observed and the clinical symptoms were monitored over a period of 15 days following infection. Fish were sampled at three day intervals to analyse the haematological parameters: total erythrocyte counts (RBC), total leucocyte counts (WBC), haemoglobin content and differential leucocyte count. Clinical symptoms observed included: erratic swimming behaviour, loss of appetite, haemorrhages, dropsy and exophthalmia. There was a significant decrease in the total RBC and haemoglobin levels by the 3rd and 6th day post infection, and an increase thereafter. WBC counts were higher in all infected groups in comparison to the control group. A significant increase in the number of neutrophils was found in the infected group up to the 9th day and a decrease thereafter. The lymphocyte number was significantly less up to the 12th day while the monocyte counts were significantly higher up to the 12th day post infection. The results showed that the bacterium, E. tarda, is pathogenic to Koi Carp. The hematological changes and clinical signs in infected fish reported in this paper will be helpful in the identification and the control of this infection.
