Development of pseudo-two-dimensional turbulent wakes

Pseudotwo-dimensional wakes are generated by introducing spanwise cellular structures into an otherwise plane turbulent wake by means of the castellated blunt trailing edges of different configurations. The transverse growths of these coflowing cellular wakes are found to be independent of each other without any noticeable spanwise interaction. This wake growth is examined in the light of the plane equilibrium wake analysis. Though these wakes are not found to be exactly self-similar, their growth shows a nonmonotonous approach toward the asymptotic state appropriate to that of a plane wake. The dye emission in the wakes illustrated a coherent vortical structure in the transverse plane, similar to that of the usual two-dimensional wake, in spite of the initial spanwise irregularities.

Alfven Surface-Waves Along Coronal Streamers

The dispersive characteristics of Alfvdn Surface Waves (ASW) along a moving plasma surrounded by a stationary plasma is discussed. The stability curves for the symmetric and the asymmetric modes are also discussed.

Stock structure of Grey Mackerel, Scomberomorus semifasciatus (Pisces: Scombridae) across northern Australia, based on otolith stable isotope chemistry

The stable isotopes of delta O-18 and delta C-13 in sagittal otolith carbonates were used to determine the stock structure of Grey Mackerel, Scomberomorus semifasciatus. Otoliths were collected from Grey Mackerel at ten locations representing much of their distributional and fisheries range across northern Australia from 2005 to 2007. Across this broad range (similar to 6500 km), fish from four broad locations-Western Australia (S1), Northern Territory and Gulf of Carpentaria (S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7), Queensland east coast mid and north sites (S8, S9) and Queensland east coast south site (S10)-had stable isotope values that were significantly different indicating stock separation. Otolith stable isotopes differed more between locations than among years within a location, indicating temporal stability across years. The spatial separation of these populations indicates a complex stock structure across northern Australia. Stocks of S. semifasciatus appear to be associated with large coastal embayments. These results indicate that optimal fisheries management may require a review of the current spatial arrangements, particularly in relation to the evidence of shared stocks in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Furthermore, as the population of S. semifasciatus in Western Australia exhibited high spatial separation from those at all the other locations examined, further research activities should focus on investigating additional locations within Western Australia for an enhanced determination of stock delineation. Pipeline Analog To Ternary Converter

The paper describes the application of the pipelining principle to the realization of an analogue-to-ternary converter. The circuit shows a considerable saving in hard-ware compared with an earlier proposed circuit. The main hardware components used are analogue comparators, subtractors and the delay elements; hence this method of A/T conversion can operate at a higher sampling frequency.

Theoretical studies on the conformations of higher gangliosides

The possible conformations of higher gangliosides (GD3, GT1a. GT1b, GQ1b) have been determined by computing their potential energy using semi-empirical potential functions. The favoured conformation of the disialic acid fragment in these gangliosides is independent of its position (internal or terminal). The favoured conformations of these gangliosides have also been correlated to their biological activity. The results suggest that tetanus toxin and sendai virus may have a large binding site which can accommodate at least four sugar residues.

Computer-aided analysis of the structure of kinematic chains

Using the link-link incidence matrix to represent a simple-jointed kinematic chain algebraic procedures have been developed to determine its structural characteristics such as the type of freedom of the chain, the number of distinct mechanisms and driving mechanisms that can be derived from the chain. A computer program incorporating these graph theory based procedures has been applied successfully for the structural analysis of several typical chains.

Significant evidence of one or more susceptibility loci for endometriosis with near-Mendelian inheritance on chromosome 7p13-15

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common disease with a heritable component. The collaborative International Endogene Study consists of two data sets (Oxford and Australia) comprising 1176 families with multiple affected. The aim was to investigate whether the apparent concentration of cases in a proportion of families could be explained by one or more rare variants with (near-)Mendelian autosomal inheritance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Linkage analyses (aimed at finding chromosomal regions harbouring disease-predisposing genes) were conducted in families with three or more affected (Oxford: n = 52; Australia: n = 196). In the Oxford data set, a non-parametric linkage score (Kong & Cox (K&C) Log of ODds (LOD)) of 3.52 was observed on chromosome 7p (genome-wide significance P = 0.011). A parametric MOD score (equal to maximum LOD maximized over 357 possible inheritance models) of 3.89 was found at 65.72 cM (D7S510) for a dominant model with reduced penetrance. After including the Australian data set, the non-parametric K&C LOD of the combined data set was 1.46 at 57.3 cM; the parametric analysis found an MOD score of 3.30 at D7S484 (empirical significance: P = 0.035) for a recessive model with high penetrance. Critical recombinant analysis narrowed the probable region of linkage down to overlapping 6.4 Mb and 11 Mb intervals containing 48 and 96 genes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to suggest that there may be one or more high-penetrance susceptibility loci for endometriosis with (near-)Mendelian inheritance.

Structure of 2-(2,6-Dimethoxyphenyl)-2,5-dimethylbicyclo[3.2. l]octane-6,8-dione

C18H2204, orthorhombic, P212~21, a = 7.343 (4), b = 11.251 (4), c = 19.357 (4)A, Z = 4, Dr, ' = 1.20, D e = 1.254 g cm -3, F(000) = 648, p(Mo Ka) = 0.94 cm -~. X-ray intensity data were collected on a Nonius CAD-4 diffractometer and the structure was solved by direct methods. Full-matrix least-squares refinement gave R = 0.052 (R w = 0.045) for 1053 observed reflections. The stereochemical configuration at C(2) has been shown to be 2-exo-methyl-2-endo- (2,6-dimethoxyphenyl), i.e. (3) in contrast to the structure (2) assigned earlier based on its ~H NMR data.

Major Australian tropical fruits biodiversity: Bioactive compounds and their bioactivities

The plant kingdom harbours many diverse bioactive molecules of pharmacological relevance. Temperate fruits and vegetables have been highly studied in this regard, but there have been fewer studies of fruits and vegetables from the tropics. As global consumers demand and are prepared to pay for new appealing and exotic foods, tropical fruits are now being more intensively investigated. Polyphenols and major classes of compounds like flavonoids or carotenoids are ubiquitously present in these fruits, as they are in the temperate ones, but particular classes of compounds are unique to tropical fruits and other plant parts. Bioactivity studies of compounds specific to tropical fruit plants may lead to new drug discoveries, while the synergistic action of the wide range of diverse compounds contained in plant extracts underlies nutritional and health properties of tropical fruits and vegetables. The evidence for in vitro and animal bioactivities is a strong indicator of the pharmacological promise shown in tropical fruit plant biodiversity. In this review, we will discuss both the occurrence of potential bioactive compounds isolated and identified from a selection of tropical fruit plants of importance in Australia, as well as recent studies of bioactivity associated with such fruits and other fruit plant parts.

Factors affecting log traits and green rotary-peeled veneer recovery from temperate eucalypt plantations

High levels of percentage green veneer recovery can be obtained from temperate eucalypt plantations. Recovery traits are affected by site and log position in the stem. Of the post-felling log traits studied, out-of-roundness was the best predictor of green recovery.

Electron paramagnetic resonance study of vanadyl ion in K2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O and K2Mg(SO4)2·6H2O

EPR study of the vanadyl ion has been carried out in its paramagnetically dilute form in K2Zn(SO4)2·6H2O and K2Mg(SO4)2·6H2O at room temperature at X-band. The vanadyl ion enters the divalent metal site and preferentially orients itself in the direction of the water molecules forming the octahedron and forms the vanadyl sulfate pentahydrate complex. The g and A tensorscorresponding to the two populous V-O orientations have been analyzed to obtain the principal values and their direction cosines with respect to the crystallographics axes. It is found that the g and A tensor have the same principal frames of reference within the limits of eperimental error. A correlation between the metal-water distance and the populations of the different V-O orientations is observed.

Assignments of non-retail commercial leases: Some contentious issues

Assignment clauses in non-retail commercial leases are as infinitely varied as the circumstances in which disputes arise. Each clause must be individually interpreted as part of the lease in which it is embedded. Whilst the assignment of a lease is one of the most commonplace transactions between lessor and lessee, the case law reveals few unifying principles. This article seeks to cautiously identify a set of principles which should be in the mind of any lawyer when a dispute relating to an assignment arises. It concludes with a short checklist of matters which must be considered by such a person to encourage the application of principles in the first instance towards a resolution of the dispute.

Improvement in the voltage grading (axial and radial) of the generator column of a Van de Graaf generator by the use of a resistor chain

It is well known that the use of a series of resistors, connected between the equipotential rings of a Van de Graaff generator, improves the axial voltage grading of the generator. The work reported in this paper shows how the resistor chain also improves the radial voltage gradient. The electrolytic field mapping technique was adopted in the present work.
