A ridge of peridotite was drilled off of the Galicia margin (Hole 637A) during ODP Leg 103. The ridge is located at the approximate boundary between oceanic and continental crust. This setting is of interest because the peridotite may be representative of upwelling upper mantle beneath an incipient ocean basin. The composition of the Galicia margin peridotite is compared with those of other North Atlantic peridotites. Hole 637A ultramafic lithologies include clinopyroxene-rich spinel harzburgite and lherzolite, as well as plagioclase-bearing peridotites. Variations in mineral modal abundances and mineral compositions are observed but are not systematic. The peridotites are broadly similar in composition to other peridotites recovered from ocean basins, but the mineral compositions and abundances suggest that they are less depleted in basaltic components than other North Atlantic peridotites by about 10%. In particular, the peridotites are enriched in the magmaphilic elements Na, Al, and Ti, as compared with other abyssal peridotites. The high abundances of these elements suggest that the Hole 637A peridotites had experienced, at most, very small amounts of partial melting prior to their emplacement. The presence of plagioclase rimming spinel in some samples suggests that the peridotite last equilibrated at about 9 kbar, near the transition between plagioclase- and spinel-peridotite stability fields. Temperatures of equilibration of the peridotite are calculated as 900°-1100°C. The relatively undepleted composition of the peridotite indicates that it was emplaced at a shallow mantle level under a relatively cool thermal regime and cooled below solidus temperatures without having participated in any significant partial melting and basalt production. This is consistent with the emplacement of the peridotite during incipient rifting of the ocean basin, before a true spreading center was established.

A detailed analysis of the texture, matrix, and elements of the microfacies from the carbonate sequence recovered in ODP Hole 639D resulted in a typological classification of 10 major microfacies types and their variants. The variations in distribution and succession of type microfacies allowed us to divide the carbonate sequence into 12 facies-defined subunits. Based on the analyzed characteristics and their relations, we also propose a paleoenvironmental interpretation involving a mixed carbonate/terrigenous ramp model instead of the previous, classical zoned carbonate platform.

The late Cenozoic deposits recovered at ODP Site 637 from the Iberian Abyssal Plain near the continental margin off northwestern Spain include three main facies groups. Turbidites are the dominant facies association (two-thirds of the total thickness), followed by pelagites (one-fourth), and subordinate amounts of contourites (one-tenth). Slump deposits occur locally in the upper Miocene and middle Pliocene. Turbidity currents and pelagic settling were the significant sediment depositional processes from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene, whereas bottom currents predominated during the late Miocene. Fine-grained, base-cut-out turbidites, normally starting with the Td division, are the most abundant sequence type. The pelagites include both carbonate-rich pelagic and hemipelagic facies. The two types of contourites, sandy and calcareous-rich or fine-grained terrigenous, record two types of bottom-current processes. The Cenozoic deposits at Site 637 show a general upward transition from contourites in the upper Miocene to turbidites in the Pliocene-Quaternary. The entire section is rhythmically bedded and has a poorly developed cyclic pattern defined by variations in the total carbonate content. The low sedimentation rates also show the same cyclicity, with lower values for the late Miocene and late Pliocene. This evolution reflects the predominant depositional processes and the dissolution of carbonates by a lower CCD during the late Miocene.

A Tithonian sequence of shallow-water limestones, intercalated with siliciclastics and overlain by dolomite, was recovered during drilling at ODP Site 639 on the edge of a tilted fault block. The carbonates were strongly affected by fracturing, dolomitization, dedolomitization, and compaction. The chronology and nature of the fractures, fracture infilling, and diagenesis of the host rock are established and correlated for both the limestone and the dolomite. A first phase of dolomitization affected limestone that was already, at least partially, indurated. In the limestone unit, fractures were filled by calcite and dolomite; most of the dolomite was recrystallized into calcite, except for the upper part. In the dolomitic unit, the first-formed dolomite was progressively recrystallized into saddle dolomite, as fractures were simultaneously activated. The dolomitic textures become less magnesian (the molar ratio mMg/mCa goes from 1.04-0.98 to 0.80), and the d18O (PDB) ranges from -10 per mil to -8 per mil. The varying pores and fissures are either cemented by a calcic saddle dolomite (mMg/mCa ranging from 0.95 to 0.80) or filled with diverse internal sediments of detrital calcic dolomite, consisting of detrital dolomite silt (d18O from -9 per mil to -7 per mil) and laminated yellow filling (with different d18O values that range from -4 per mil to +3 per mil). These internal sediments clearly contain elements of the host rock and fragments of saddle crystals. They are covered by marls with calpionellids of early Valanginian age, which permits dating of most of the diagenetic phases as pre-Valanginian. The dolomitization appears to be related to fracturing resulting from extensional tectonics; it is also partially related to an erosional episode. Two models of dolomitization can be proposed from the petrographic characteristics and isotopic data. Early replacement of aragonite bioclasts by sparite, dissolution linked to dolomitization, and negative d18O values of dolomite suggest a freshwater influence and 'mixing zone' model. On the other hand, the significant presence of saddle dolomite and repeated negative d18O values suggest a temperature effect; because we can dismiss deep burial, hydrothermal formation of dolomite would be the most probable model. For both of these hypotheses, the vadose filling of cavities and fractures by silt suggests emersion, and the different, and even positive, d18O values of the last-formed yellow internal sediment could suggest dolomitization of the top of the sequence under saline to hypersaline conditions. Fracturing resulting in the reopening of porosity and the draining of dolomitizing fluids was linked to extensional tectonics prior to the tilting of the block. These features indicate an earlier beginning to the rifting of the Iberian margin than previously known. Dolomitization, emersion, and erosion correspond to eustatic sea-level lowering at the Berriasian/Valanginian boundary. Diagenesis, rather than sedimentation, seems to mark this global event and to provide a record of the regional tectonic history.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 103 occupied five sites on the Galicia margin, northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Two holes (Holes 637A and 638B) yielded significant Cenozoic sedimentary sections ranging from late Miocene to late Pleistocene in age. From the nannofossil stratigraphy, one hiatus is recognized in Hole 637A (2.35-2.4 Ma), whereas two hiatuses (one at 1.9-2.6 Ma and another at 3.5-3.7 Ma) are recognized in Hole 638B. Sediment-accumulation rates for the Cenozoic portions of these two holes have been calculated based on the nannofossil datums. The abundance ratios of Coccolithus pelagicus to Discoaster brouweri for Hole 637A show relatively low values and small fluctuations from 2.5 to 6.5 Ma but sharply increase and then widely fluctuate beginning at about 2.5 Ma. This may indicate relatively warmer, more stable surface-water temperatures from 2.5 to 6.5 Ma and cooler, variable surface-water temperatures after 2.5 Ma at Site 637. C. pelagicus/D. brouweri ratios from Hole 638B also show a trend of increasing values with time from late Miocene to late Pliocene, but with more fluctuations and a different pattern from that of Hole 637A.

The peridotite recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 637A, Galicia margin, has suffered extensive low-temperature alteration that includes serpentinization, calcite veining, and calcite replacement. This note presents textural and geochemical data on the serpentine and calcite. Such data indicate that the serpentinization, serpentine veining, and calcite veining of the peridotite occurred in several stages late in the history of the peridotite emplacement, probably after the peridotite was emplaced at crustal levels. It is also apparent that some deformational events (evidenced by faulting and brecciation of both serpentine and calcite veins) continued after the main phase of low-temperature alteration. The geochemistry and petrology, structure, and high-temperature alteration of the peridotite are discussed in separate papers in this volume (Evans and Girardeau, 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.103.138.1988; Girardeau et al., 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.103.135.1988; Kimball and Evans, 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.103.140.1988; Agrinier et al., 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.103.136.1988).
