A poly(o-toluidine) (POT)/2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) composite was prepared. When POT and DMcT are mixed in a proper solvent, POT in a medium-oxidation state is reduced, and DMcT in turn is oxidized to its soluble dimer when the molar ratio of DMcT to POT is higher than 0.5. Therefore, the composite was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and exhibited very high electroactivity, two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure POT and three orders of magnitude higher than that of pure DMcT. Molecular-level contact between POT and DMcT is the reason for the improved catalytic effect of POT on DMcT, compared to that of polyaniline on DMcT. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society. The electron impact mass spectrum (EIMS) of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol was reported in this paper. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) was used to study the gas phase ion structure of [C8H7](+) formed by the fragmentation of ionized 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol, and that it has the same structure as m/z 103 ions generated by cinnamic acid and alpha-methylstyrene. Deuterium labelling, metastable ion (MI) and CID experimental results indicate the formation of m/z 103 ion resulting from molecular ion of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol, which is a stepwise procedure via twice proton transfers, rather than concerted process during the successive elimination of methyl radical and neutral carbon monoxide accompanying hydrogen transfer. Moreover, in order to rationalized these fragmentation processes, the bimolecular proton bound complex between benzyne and acetylene intermediate has been proposed.

A series of new optically active aromatic polyimides containing axially dissymmetric 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2-diyl units were prepared from optically pure (R)-(+)-or (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene dianhydrides and various aromatic diamines via a conventional two-step procedure that included ring-opening polycondensation and chemical cyclodehydration. The optically pure isomer of dianhydride was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of optically pure (R)-(+)or (S)-(-)1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent and subsequent hydrolysis of the resultant tetranitrile derivatives, followed by the dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acids to obtain the dianhydrides. These polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and m-cresol, etc., and have glass transition temperatures of 251-296 degrees C, and 5% weight loss occurs not lower than 480 degrees C. The specific rotations of the optically active polyimides ranged from +196 degrees to +263 degrees, and the optical stability and chiroptical properties of them were also studied. A series of novel aromatic diamines (1-3) containing kinked cyclohexylidene moieties was synthesized by a reaction of excess aniline and corresponding methyl-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives. The structures of (1-3) were identifield by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and FT-IR. The polymers were synthesized from the obtained diamines and various aromatic dianhydrides by the conventional polycondensation reaction followed by chemical imidization as well as high-temperature one-step polymerization. The inherent viscosities and weight-average molecular weights of the resulting polyimides were in the ranges of 0.55-1.58 dL/g and (7.4-15.2) x 10(4) g/mol, respectively. The prepared polyimides showed excellent thermal stabilities and good solubility. All polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, tetrachloroethane, etc., and the glass transition temperatures were observed at 290-372 degrees C.

2,2'-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride was used as a new monomer with various aromatic diamines to obtain polyimides by the usual two-step method. The bis(ether anhydride) was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of I,1'-bi-2-naphthol with N-phenyl-4-chlorophthalimide, N-methyl-4-nitrophthalimide or 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent, and subsequent hydrolysis of the resulting bis(ether imide)s or bis(ether dinitrile), and then dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acid to afford the dianhydride. Most of the obtained polyimides were soluble in chloroform, pyridine, DMF, etc. The polyimide prepared from p-phenylene diamine was partial crystalline, whereas the others showed amorphous patterns in a WAXD study. These polymers have glass transition temperatures between 255-294 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures in the range of 502-541 degrees C in nitrogen and 473-537 degrees C in air. Gas permeability coefficients of a series of aromatic polyetherimides, which were prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) with various aromatic diamines, to H-2, O-2 and N-2 have been measured under 7 atm and at the temperature range 30-100 degrees C. A significant change in the permeability and permselectivity resulting from the systematic variation in chemical structure of the polyetherimides was found. Among the polyetherimides, that were prepared from phenylenediamine and methyl substituted phenylenediamines, the increase of permeability is accompanied by a decrease of permselectivity. The polyetherimides that were prepared from 3,5-diaminobenzoic esters have lower permselectivity than the others. However, the polyetherimide from 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid possesses much higher permselectivity than the others due to cross-linking. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

The synthesis is described of some aromatic polyamides based on unsubstituted, and methyl-, carboxy-, and sulfo-substituted diamines by interfacial polycondensation. Some of them are crosslinked and some of them contain heterocyclic aromatic rings. Their chemical structures are characterized by IR and C-13 solid-state NMR spectra and the spectra are interpreted. Gas permeability coefficients of a series of aromatic polyetherimides prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and four (methylene dianiline)s with a methyl side group to H-2, CO2, O-2, N-2, and CH4 were measured under 7 atm and within a temperature range from 30 to 150 degrees C. The gas permeabilities and permselectivities of these polymers were compared with those of the HQDPA-based polyetherimides from methylene dianiline (MDA) and isopropylidene dianiline (IPDA). The number and position of the methyl side groups on the benzene rings of the diamine residues strongly affect the gas permeabilities and permselectivities of the HQDPA-based polyetherimides. The gas permeability of the polyetherimide progressively increases with an increase in the number of the methyl side groups. Both the gas permeability and permselectivity of the polyetherimides with methyl side groups are higher than those of HQDPA-MDA. The polyetherimide prepared from 3,3'-dimethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA1) possesses both higher permeability and permselectivity than the polyetherimides prepared from 2,2'-dimethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA2). However, two of the polyetherimides prepared 2,2',3,3'-tetramethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (TMMDA1) or 2,2', 5,5'-tetramethyl 4,4'-methylene dianiline (TMMDA2) possess almost the same gas permeability and permselectivity.

Miscibility in blends of three styrene-butadiene-styrene and one styrene-isoprene-styrene triblock copolymers containing 28%, 30%, 48%, and 14% by weight of polystyrene, respectively, with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found from the optical clarity and the glass transition temperature behavior that the blends show miscibility for each kind of triblock copolymers below a certain concentration of PVME. The concentration range to show miscibility becomes wider as the polystyrene content and molecular weight of PS segment in the triblock copolymers increase. From the FTIR results, the relative peak intensity of the 1100 cm-1 region due to COCH3 band of PVME and peak position of 698 cm-1 region due to phenyl ring are sensitive to the miscibility of SBS(SIS)/PVME blends. The results show that the miscibility in SBS(SIS)/PVME blends is greatly affected by the composition of the copolymers and the polystyrene content in the triblock copolymers. Molecular weights of polystyrene segments have also affected the miscibility of the blends. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Among marine bacteria isolated from the cytotoxic sponge Hymeniacidon perleve, one strain NJ6-3-1 classified as Pseudomonas sp. showed both cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. Fatty acid analysis indicated that the bacterial strain consists mainly of C16:1, C16:0, C18:1, C18:0, C15:0, C14:0. One unusual 9,10-cyclopropane-C17:0 fatty acid and C26:0 also constitute major components, as well as the existence of squalene, the precursor of triterpenoids. The major metabolites in the culture broth were identified as alkaloids, including diketopiperazines and indole compounds, namely 3,6-diisopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3-benzyl-3-isopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3,6-bis-(2-methylpropyl)-piperazine-2,5-dione, indole-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester, indole-3-ethanol, and quinazoline-2,4-dione.

In this paper, the reactions of nitrone, N-methyl nitrone, N-phenyl nitrone and their hydroxylamine tautomers (vinyl-hydroxylamine, N-methyl-vinyl-hydroxylamine and N-phenyl-vinyl-hydroxylamine) on the reconstructed C(100)-2 x 1 surface have been investigated using hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP), Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) and multi-configuration complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) methods. The calculations showed that all the nitrones can react with the surface "dimer" via facile 1.3-dipolar cycloaddition with small activation barriers (less than 12.0 kJ/mol at B3LYP/6-31g(d) level). The [2+2] cycloaddition of hydroxylamine tautomers on the C(100) surface follows a diradical mechanism. Hydroxylamine tautomers first form diradical intermediates with the reconstructed C(I 00)-2 x I surface by overcoming a large activation barrier of 50-60 kJ/mol (B3LYP), then generate [2+2] cycloaddition products via diradical transition states with negligible activation barriers. The surface reactions result in hydroxyl or amino-terminated diamond surfaces, which offers new opportunity for further modifications. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of nitrone, N-methyl nitrone, and their hydroxylamine tautomers (vinyl-hydroxylamine and N-methyl vinyl-hydroxylamine) on the reconstructed Si(100)-2 x 1 surface has been investigated by means of hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP) and Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) methods. The calculations predicted that both of the nitrones should react with the surface dimer via facile concerted 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition leading to 5-member-ring compounds. The reaction of hydroxylamine tautomers on the Si(100) surface follows pi-complex (intermediate) mechanism. For the reaction of N-methyl vinyl-hydroxylamine, the pi-complex intermediate undergoes [2+2] cycloaddition leading to a 4-member-ring compound. But in the reaction of vinyl-hydroxylamine, the intermediate undergoes H-migration reaction ("ene" reaction) resulting in the oxime-terminated Si surface. All the surface reactions result in the hydroxyl-terminated silicon surfaces, which are very useful for the further modification of the semiconductor.

Air stable benzodiazepine containing palladacycles were synthesized by a C-H activation reaction and studied by mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Catalytic C-H functionalizations of 1-methyl-5-phenyl-1H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2(3H)-one with diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate led to a mixture, which included the starting material and the expected product 1-methyl-5-(2'-biphenyl)-1H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2(3H)-one. The properties of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salt of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)bis[bis-(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using electrochemistry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and extended X-ray absorbance fine structure spectroscopy: the anion structures from these last two techniques are in excellent agreement with each other. Electrochemical reduction of the complex leads to the a two-electron metal-centered reduction of U(VI) to U(IV), and the production Of UO2, or a complex containing UO2. Under normal conditions, this leads to the coating of the electrode with a passivating film. The presence of volatile organic compounds in the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate (where the 1-alkyl chain was methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, or octadecyl) during the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide led to the formation of a yellow precipitate. To understand the effect of the cation upon the composition and structure of the precipitates, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of a number of nitratodioxouranate(VI) complexes were synthesized and then analyzed using X-ray crystallography. It was demonstrated that the length of the 1-alkyl chain played an important role, not only in the composition of the complex salt, but also in the synthesis of dinuclear anions containing the bridging mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato), or oxalato, ligand, by protecting it from further oxidation.
