This study reports the activity of ionic substituted bimetallic Cu-Ni-modified ceria and Cu-Fe-modified ceria catalysts for low-temperature water gas shift (WGS) reaction. The catalysts were synthesized in nano-crystalline size by a sonochemical method and characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, TPR and BET surface analyzer techniques. Due to the ionic substitution of these aliovalent base metals, lattice oxygen in CeO2 is activated and these catalysts show high activity for WGS at low temperature. An increase in the reducibility and oxygen storage capacity of bimetallic substituted CeO2, as evidenced by H-2-TPR experiments, is the primary reason for the higher activity towards WGS reaction. In the absence of feed CO2 and H-2, 100% conversion of CO with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed at 320 degrees C and 380 degrees C, for Cu-Ni-modified ceria and Cu-Fe-modified ceria catalysts. Notably, in the presence of feed H2O. a reverse WGS reaction does not occur over these ceria modified catalysts. A redox reaction mechanism, involving oxidation of CO adsorbed on the metal was developed to correlate the experimental data and determine kinetic parameters. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) was carried out over Ni supported on CeO2 prepared by the co-precipitation method. The influence of metal loadings (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.% Ni) and the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature and feed composition on CO oxidation and oxidation selectivity were evaluated by using dry reformate gas. No other reactions like CO or CO2 methanation, coking, reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is observed in the temperature range of 100-200 A degrees C on these catalysts. Hydrogen oxidation dominates over CO oxidation above the temperature of 200 A degrees C. An increase in oxygen leads to an increase in CO conversion but a simultaneous decrease in the O-2 selectivity. It has been noticed that 5 and 10 % Ni/CeO2 show better catalytic activity towards CO-PROX reaction. These catalysts were characterized by S-BET, XRD, TEM, XPS and H-2-TPR.

Ce0.88Si0.1Pt0.02O2-d and Ce0.88Al0.1Pt0.02O2-d catalysts were synthesized by using a low-temperature sonochemical method and characterized by using XRD, TEM, XPS, FTIR, and BET surface analyzer. The catalytic activities of these compounds were investigated for the watergas shift reaction in the temperature range of 140-440 degrees C. The substitution of Si in Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-d increased the releasing capacity of lattice oxygen, whereas the substitution of Al decreased the reducibility of Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-d, as evidenced by hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction studies. However, both the catalysts showed a considerable improvement in terms of activity and stability compared to Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-d. The combined activity measurement and characterization results suggest that the increase in the oxygen vacancy, which acts as a dissociation center for water, is the primary reason for the improvement in the activity of modified Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-d. Both the catalysts are 100?% selective toward H2 production, and approximately 99?% conversion of CO to CO2 was observed at 260 and 270 degrees C for Ce0.88Si0.1Pt0.02O2-d and Ce0.88Al0.1Pt0.02O2-d, respectively. These catalysts do not deactivate during the daily startup/shutdown operations and are sustainable even after prolonged reaction. Notably, these catalysts do not require any pretreatment or activation during startup/shutdown operations.

RATIONALE The ratio of the measured abundance of 13C18O bonding CO2 to its stochastic abundance, prescribed by the delta 13C and delta 18O values from a carbonate mineral, is sensitive to its growth temperature. Recently, clumped-isotope thermometry, which uses this ratio, has been adopted as a new tool to elucidate paleotemperatures quantitatively. METHODS Clumped isotopes in CO2 were measured with a small-sector isotope ratio mass spectrometer. CO2 samples digested from several kinds of calcium carbonates by phosphoric acid at 25 degrees C were purified using both cryogenic and gas-chromatographic separations, and their isotopic composition (delta 13C, delta 18O, Delta 47, Delta 48 and Delta 49 values) were then determined using a dual-inlet Delta XP mass spectrometer. RESULTS The internal precisions of the single gas Delta 47 measurements were 0.005 and 0.02 parts per thousand (1 SE) for the optimum and the routine analytical conditions, respectively, which are comparable with those obtained using a MAT 253 mass spectrometer. The long-term variations in the Delta 47 values for the in-house working standard and the heated CO2 gases since 2007 were close to the routine, single gas uncertainty while showing seasonal-like periodicities with a decreasing trend. Unlike the MAT 253, the Delta XP did not show any significant relationship between the Delta 47 and delta 47 values. CONCLUSIONS The Delta XP gave results that were approximately as precise as those of the MAT 253 for clumped-isotope analysis. The temporal stability of the Delta XP seemed to be lower, although an advantage of the Delta XP was that no dependency of delta 47 on Delta 47 was found. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We demonstrate the activity of Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalysts towards the CO oxidation and water gas shift (VMS) reaction. Both the catalysts were synthesized in the nano crystalline form by a low temperature sonochemical method and characterized by different techniques such as XRD, FT-Raman, TEM, FT-IR, XPS and BET surface analyzer. H-2-TPR results corroborate the intimate contact between noble metal and Fe ions in the both catalysts that facilitates the reducibility of the support. In the absence of feed CO2 and H-2, nearly 100% conversion of CO to CO2 with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed at 300 degrees C and 260 degrees C respectively, for Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta and Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta catalyst. However, the catalytic performance of Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta deteriorates in the presence of feed CO2 and H-2. The change in the support reducibility is the primary reason for the significant increase in the activity for CO oxidation and WGS reaction. The effect of Fe addition was more significant in Ti0.73Pd0.02Fe0.25O2-delta than Ti0.84Pt0.01Fe0.15O2-delta. Based on the spectroscopic evidences and surface phenomena, a hybrid reaction scheme utilizing both surface hydroxyl groups and the lattice oxygen was hypothesized over these catalysts for WGS reaction. The mechanisms based on the formate and redox pathway were used to fit the ldnetic data. The analysis of experimental data shows the redox mechanism is the dominant pathway over these catalysts. The sensing of carbon dioxide (CO2) at room temperature, which has potential applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare, mining, biotechnology, food industry, etc., is a challenge for the scientific community due to the relative inertness of CO2. Here, we propose a novel gas sensor based on clad-etched Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with polyallylamine-amino-carbon nanotube coated on the surface of the core for detecting the concentrations of CO2 gas at room temperature, in ppm levels over a wide range (1000 ppm-4000 ppm). The limit of detection observed in polyallylamine-amino-carbon nanotube coated core-FBG has been found to be about 75 ppm. In this approach, when CO2 gas molecules interact with the polyallylamine-amino-carbon nanotube coated FBG, the effective refractive index of the fiber core changes, resulting in a shift in Bragg wavelength. The experimental data show a linear response of Bragg wavelength shift for increase in concentration of CO2 gas. Besides being reproducible and repeatable, the technique is fast, compact, and highly sensitive. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Feeding 9-10billion people by 2050 and preventing dangerous climate change are two of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Both challenges must be met while reducing the impact of land management on ecosystem services that deliver vital goods and services, and support human health and well-being. Few studies to date have considered the interactions between these challenges. In this study we briefly outline the challenges, review the supply- and demand-side climate mitigation potential available in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use AFOLU sector and options for delivering food security. We briefly outline some of the synergies and trade-offs afforded by mitigation practices, before presenting an assessment of the mitigation potential possible in the AFOLU sector under possible future scenarios in which demand-side measures codeliver to aid food security. We conclude that while supply-side mitigation measures, such as changes in land management, might either enhance or negatively impact food security, demand-side mitigation measures, such as reduced waste or demand for livestock products, should benefit both food security and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. Demand-side measures offer a greater potential (1.5-15.6Gt CO2-eq. yr(-1)) in meeting both challenges than do supply-side measures (1.5-4.3Gt CO2-eq. yr(-1) at carbon prices between 20 and 100US$ tCO(2)-eq. yr(-1)), but given the enormity of challenges, all options need to be considered. Supply-side measures should be implemented immediately, focussing on those that allow the production of more agricultural product per unit of input. For demand-side measures, given the difficulties in their implementation and lag in their effectiveness, policy should be introduced quickly, and should aim to codeliver to other policy agenda, such as improving environmental quality or improving dietary health. These problems facing humanity in the 21st Century are extremely challenging, and policy that addresses multiple objectives is required now more than ever.

Using van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations, we explore the possibility of engineering the local structure and morphology of high-surface-area graphene-derived materials to improve the uptake of methane and carbon dioxide for gas storage and sensing. We test the sensitivity of the gas adsorption energy to the introduction of native point defects, curvature, and the application of strain. The binding energy at topological point defect sites is inversely correlated with the number of missing carbon atoms, causing Stone-Wales defects to show the largest enhancement with respect to pristine graphene (similar to 20%). Improvements of similar magnitude are observed at concavely curved surfaces in buckled graphene sheets under compressive strain, whereas tensile strain tends to weaken gas binding. Trends for CO2 and CH4 are, similar, although CO2 binding is generally stronger by similar to 4 to 5 kJ mol(-1). However, the differential between the adsorption of CO2 and CH4 is much higher on folded graphene sheets and at concave curvatures; this could possibly be leveraged for CH4/CO2 flow separation and gasselective sensors.

A simple methodology has been developed for the synthesis of functional nanoporous carbon (NPC) materials using a metal-organic framework (IRMOF-3) that can act as a template for external carbon precursor (viz, sucrose) and also a self-sacrificing carbon source. The resultant graphitic NPC samples (abbreviated as NPC-0, NPC-150, NPC-300, NPC-500 and NPC-1000 based on sucrose loading) obtained through loading different amounts of sucrose exhibit tunable textural parameters. Among these, NPC-300 shows very high surface area (BET approximate to 3119 m(2)/g, Langmuir approximate to 4031 m(2)/g) with a large pore volume of 1.93 cm(3)/g. High degree of porosity coupled with polar surface functional groups, make NPC-300 remarkable candidate for the uptake of H-2 (2.54 wt% at 1 bar, and 5.1 wt% at 50 bar, 77 K) and CO2 (64 wt% at 1 bar, 195 K and 16.9 wt% at 30 bar, 298 K). As a working electrode in a supercapacitor cell, NPC-300 shows excellent reversible charge storage thus, demonstrating multifunctional usage of the carbon materials. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. Availability of producer gas engines at MW being limited necessitates to adapt engine from natural gas operation. The present work focus on the development of necessary kit for adapting a 12 cylinder lean burn turbo-charged natural gas engine rated at 900 kWe (Waukesha make VHP5904LTD) to operate on producer and set up an appropriate capacity biomass gasification system for grid linked power generation in Thailand. The overall plant configuration had fuel processing, drying, reactor, cooling and cleaning system, water treatment, engine generator and power evacuation. The overall project is designed for evacuation of 1.5 MWe power to the state grid and had 2 gasification system with the above configuration and 3 engines. Two gasification system each designed for about 1100 kg/hr of woody biomass was connected to the engine using a producer gas carburetor for the necessary Air to fuel ratio control. In the use of PG to fuel IC engines, it has been recognized that the engine response will differ as compared to the response with conventional fueled operation due to the differences in the thermo-physical properties of PG. On fuelling a conventional engine with PG, power de-rating can be expected due to the lower calorific value (LCV), lower adiabatic flame temperature (AFT) and the lower than unity product to reactant more ratio. Further the A/F ratio for producer gas is about 1/10th that of natural gas and requires a different carburetor for engine operation. The research involved in developing a carburetor for varying load conditions. The patented carburetor is based on area ratio control, consisting of a zero pressure regulator and a separate gas and air line along with a mixing zone. The 95 litre engine at 1000 rpm has an electrical efficiency of 33.5 % with a heat input of 2.62 MW. Each engine had two carburetors designed for producer gas flow each capable of handling about 1200 m3/hr in order to provide similar engine heat input at a lower conversion efficiency. Cold flow studies simulating the engine carburetion system results showed that the A/F was maintained in the range of 1.3 +/- 0.1 over the entire flow range. Initially, the gasification system was tested using woody biomass and the gas composition was found to be CO 15 +/- 1.5 % H-2 22 +/- 2% CH4 2.2 +/- 0.5 CO2 11.25 +/- 1.4 % and rest N-2, with the calorific value in the range of 5.0 MJ/kg. After initial trials on the engine to fine tune the control system and adjust various engine operating parameter a peak load of 800 kWe was achieved, while a stable operating conditions was found to be at 750 kWe which is nearly 85 % of the natural gas rating. The specific fuel consumption was found to be 0.9 kg of biomass per kWh.

We report the diffusion characteristics of water vapor through two different porous media, viz., membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) in a nonoperational fuel cell. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) was employed for measuring water vapor concentration in the test channel. Effects of the membrane pore size and the inlet humidity on the water vapor transport are quantified through mass flux and diffusion coefficient. Water vapor transport rate is found to be higher for GDL than for MEA. The flexibility and wide range of application of TDLAS in a fuel cell setup is demonstrated through experiments with a stagnant flow field on the dry side.

3D thermo-electro-mechanical device simulations are presented of a novel fully CMOS-compatible MOSFET gas sensor operating in a SOI membrane. A comprehensive stress analysis of a Si-SiO2-based multilayer membrane has been performed to ensure a high degree of mechanical reliability at a high operating temperature (e.g. up to 400°C). Moreover, optimisation of the layout dimensions of the SOI membrane, in particular the aspect ratio between the membrane length and membrane thickness, has been carried out to find the best trade-off between minimal device power consumption and acceptable mechanical stress.

This paper describes coupled-effect simulations of smart micro gas-sensors based on standard BiCMOS technology. The smart sensor features very low power consumption, high sensitivity and potential low fabrication cost achieved through full CMOS integration. For the first time the micro heaters are made of active CMOS elements (i.e. MOSFET transistors) and embedded in a thin SOI membrane consisting of Si and SiO2 thin layers. Micro gas-sensors such as chemoresistive, microcalorimeteric and Pd/polymer gate FET sensors can be made using this technology. Full numerical analyses including 3D electro-thermo-mechanical simulations, in particular stress and deflection studies on the SOI membranes are presented. The transducer circuit design and the post-CMOS fabrication process, which includes single sided back-etching, are also reported.
