Imidazolium types of ionic liquids were immobilized by tethering it to acrylate backbone. These imidazolium salt containing acrylate monomers were polymerize at 70oC by free radical polymerization to give polymers poly(AcIm-n) with n being the side chain lenght. The chemical structure of the polymer electrolytes obtained by the described synthetic routes was investigated by NMR-spectroscopy. The polymers were doped with various amounts of H3PO4 and LiN(SO2CF3)2, to obtain poly(AcIm-n) x H3PO4 and poly(AcIm-2-Li) x LiN(SO2CF3)2. The TG curves show that the polymer electrolytes are thermally stable up to about 200◦C. DSC results indicates the softening effect of the length of the spacers (n) as well as phosphoric acid. The proton conductivity of the samples increase with x and reaches to 10-2 Scm-1 at 120oC for both poly(AcIm-2)2H3PO4 and poly(AcIm-6)2H3PO4. It was observed that the lithium ion conductivity of the poly(AcIm-2-Li) x LiN(SO2CF3)2 increases with blends (x) up to certain composition and then leveled off independently from blend content. The conductivity reaches to about 10-5 S cm-1 at 30oC and 10-3 at 100oC for poly(AcIm-2-Li) x LiN(SO2CF3)2 where x is 10. The phosphate and phosphoric acid functionality in the resulting polymers, poly(AcIm-n) x H3PO4, undergoes condensation leading to the formation of cross-linked materials at elevated temperature which may improve the mechanical properties to be used as membrane materials in fuel cells. High resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to obtain information about hydrogen bonding in solids. The low Tg enhances molecular mobility and this leads to better resolved resonances in both the backbone region and side chain region. The mobile and immobile protons can be distinguished by comparing 1H MAS and 1H-DQF NMR spectra. The interaction of the protons which may contribute to the conductivity is observed from the 2D double quantum correlation (DQC) spectra.

Due to the high price of natural oil and harmful effects of its usage, as the increase in emission of greenhouse gases, the industry focused in searching of sustainable types of the raw materials for production of chemicals. Ethanol, produced by fermentation of sugars, is one of the more interesting renewable materials for chemical manufacturing. There are numerous applications for the conversion of ethanol into commodity chemicals. In particular, the production of 1,3-butadiene whose primary source is ethanol using multifunctional catalysts is attractive. With the 25% of world rubber manufacturers utilizing 1,3-butadiene, there is an exigent need for its sustainable production. In this research, the conversion of ethanol in one-step process to 1,3-butadiene was studied. According to the literature, the mechanisms which were proposed to explain the way ethanol transforms into butadiene require to have both acid and basic sites. But still, there are a lot of debate on this topic. Thus, the aim of this research work is a better understanding of the reaction pathways with all the possible intermediates and products which lead to the formation of butadiene from ethanol. The particular interests represent the catalysts, based on different ratio Mg/Si in comparison to bare magnesia and silica oxides, in order to identify a good combination of acid/basic sites for the adsorption and conversion of ethanol. Usage of spectroscopictechniques are important to extract information that could be helpful for understanding the processes on the molecular level. The diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy coupled to mass spectrometry (DRIFT-MS) was used to study the surface composition of the catalysts during the adsorption of ethanol and its transformation during the temperature program. Whereas, mass spectrometry was used to monitor the desorbed products. The set of studied materials include MgO, Mg/Si=0.1, Mg/Si=2, Mg/Si=3, Mg/Si=9 and SiO2 which were also characterized by means of surface area measurements.

The project of this Ph.D. thesis is based on a co-supervised collaboration between Università di Bologna, ALMA MATER STUDIORUM (Italy) and Instituto de Tecnología Química, Universitat Politècnica de València ITQ-UPV (Spain). This Ph.D. thesis is about the synthesis, characterization and catalytic testing of complex mixed-oxide catalysts mainly related to the family of Hexagonal Tungsten Bronzes (HTBs). These materials have been little explored as catalysts, although they have a great potential as multifunctional materials. Their peculiar acid properties can be coupled to other functionalities (e.g. redox sites) by isomorphous substitution of tungsten atoms with other transition metals such as vanadium, niobium and molybdenum. In this PhD thesis, it was demonstrated how it is possible to prepare substituted-HTBs by hydrothermal synthesis; these mixed-oxide were fully characterize by a number of physicochemical techniques such as XPS, HR-TEM, XAS etc. They were also used as catalysts for the one-pot glycerol oxidehydration to acrylic acid; this reaction might represent a viable chemical route to solve the important issue related to the co-production of glycerin along the biodiesel production chain. Acrylic acid yields as high as 51% were obtained and important structure-reactivity correlations were proved to govern the catalytic performance; only fine tuning of acid and redox properties as well as the in-framework presence of vanadium are fundamental to achieve noteworthy yields into the acid monomer. The overall results reported herein might represent an important contribution for future applications of HTBs in catalysis as well as a general guideline for a multifaceted approach for their physicochemical characterization.

We describe a method for generating a variety of chemically diverse broadly responsive low-power vapor sensors. The chemical polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of plasticizers has yielded conducting organic polymer films whose resistivities are sensitive to the identity and concentration of various vapors in air. An array of such sensing elements produced a chemically reversible diagnostic pattern of electrical resistance changes upon exposure to different odorants. Principal component analysis has demonstrated that such sensors can identify and quantify different airborne organic solvents and can yield information on the components of gas mixtures.

Doped ceria (CeO2,) compounds are fluorite type oxides, which show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), in oxidizing atmospheres. As a consequence of this, considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for 'low (500-650 degreesC)' or 'intermediate (650-800 degreesC)' temperature operation, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, the authors prepared two kinds of nanosize Sm-doped CeO2 particles with different morphologies: one type was round and the other was elongated. Processing these powders with different morphology produced dense materials with very different ionic conducting properties and different nanoscale microstructures. Since both particles are very fine and well dispersed, sintered bodies with high density (relative density >95% of theoretical) could be prepared using both types of powder particles. The electrical conductivity of sintered bodies prepared from these powders with different starting morphologies was very different. Materials prepared from particles having a round shape were much higher than those produced using powders with an elongated morphology. Measured activation energies of the corresponding sintered samples showed a similar trend; round particles (60 kJ/mol), elongated particles (74 kJ/mol). While X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles of these sintered materials were identical, diffuse scatter was observed in the back.-round of selected area electron diffraction pattern recorded from both sintered bodies. This indicated an underlying structure that appeared to have been influenced by the processing technology. Detailed observation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) revealed that the size of microdomain with ordering of cations in the sintered body made from round shape particles was much smaller than that of the sintered body made from elongated particles. Accordingly, it is concluded that the morphology of doped CeO2 powders strongly influenced the microdomain size and electrolytic properties in the doped CeO2 sintered body. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Ion implantation of normally insulating polymers offers an alternative to depositing conjugated organics onto plastic films to make electronic circuits. We used a 50 keV nitrogen ion beam to mix a thin 10 nm Sn/Sb alloy film into the subsurface of polyetheretherketone and report the low temperature properties of this material. We observed metallic behavior, and the onset of superconductivity below 3 K. There are strong indications that the superconductivity does not result from a residual thin film of alloy, but instead from a network of alloy grains coupled via a weakly conducting, ion-beam carbonized polymer matrix. The strong couplings between different degrees of freedom are believed to be responsible for novel and complex phenomena discovered in transition metal oxides (TMOs). The physical complexity is directly responsible for their tunability. Creating surfaces/interfaces add an additional ' man-made' twist, approaching the quantum phenomena of correlated materials. ^ The dissertation focused on the structural and electronic properties in proximity of surface of three prototype TMO compounds by using three complementary techniques: scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction, particularly emphasized the effects of broken symmetry and imperfections like defects on the coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom. ^ Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 is a layered ruthenate with square lattice and at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in Ca2-xSrxRuO4. That the substitution of Sr 2+ with Ca2+ causing RuO6 rotation narrows the dxy band width and changes the Fermi surface topology. Particularly, the γ(dxy) Fermi surface sheet exhibited hole-like in Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 in contrast to electron-like in Sr2RuO4, showing a strong charge-lattice coupling. ^ Na0.75CoO2 is a layered cobaltite with triangular lattice exhibiting extraordinary thermoelectric properties. The well-ordered CoO2-terminated surface with random Na distribution was observed. However, lattice constants of the surface are smaller than that in bulk. The surface density of states (DOS) showed strong temperature dependence. Especially, an unusual shift of the minimum DOS occurs below 230 K, clearly indicating a local charging effect on the surface. ^ Cd2Re2O7 is the first known pyrochlore oxide superconductor (Tc ∼ 1K). It exhibited an unusual second-order phase transition occurring at TS1 = 200 K and a controversial first-order transition at TS2 = 120 K. While bulk properties display large anomalies at TS1 but rather subtle and sample-dependent changes at TS2, the surface DOS near the EF show no change at T s1 but a substantial increase below TS2---a complete reversal as the signature for the transitions. We argued that crystal imperfections, mainly defects, which were considerably enhanced at the surface, resulted in the transition at TS2. ^

A novel method to fabricate chemically linked conducting polymer–biopolymer composites that are intrinsically flexible and conducting for functional electrode applications is presented. Polypyrrole was synthesised in situ during the cellulose regeneration process using the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid as a solvent medium. The obtained polypyrrole–cellulose composite was chemically blended and showed flexible polymer properties while retaining the electronic properties of a conducting polymer. Addition of an ionic liquid such as trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, enhanced the flexibility of the composite. The functional application of these materials in the electrochemically controlled release of a model drug has been demonstrated. This strategy opens up a new design for a wide spectrum of materials for smart electronic device applications wherein the functionality of doping and de-doping of conducting polymers is retained and their processability issue is addressed by exploiting an ionic liquid route.

Co-Al-Ox mixed metal oxides partially modified with Cu or Mg, as well as Ag were successfully prepared, characterized and evaluated as potential catalysts for the N2O decomposition. The materials were characterized by the following techniques: X-Ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), N2 Physisorption, Hydrogen Temperature-Programmed Reduction (H2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ag-modified HT-derived mixed oxides showed enhanced activity compared to the undoped materials, the optimum composition was found for (1 wt.% Ag)CHT-Co3Al. The catalyst characterization studies suggested that the improved catalytic activity of Ag-promoted catalysts were mainly because of the altered redox properties of the materials.

The introduction of electronically-active heteroanions into polyoxometalates (POMs) is one of the emerging topics in this field. The novel clusters have shown unprecedented intramolecular electron-transfer features that can be directly mediated by the incorporated heteroanions. In this thesis, we will focus on the study of phosphite (HPO32-) as new non-traditional heteroanions, discover HPO32- templated nanostructures, investigate their electronic behaviours as well as understand the self-assembly process of HPO32--templated species. The thesis starts with incorporating HPO32- into POM cages. The feasibility of this work was illustrated by the successful trapping of HPO32- into a “Trojan Horse” type {W18O56} nanocage. The reactivity of embedded {HPO3} was fully studied, showing the cluster undergoes a structural rearrangement in solution whereby the {HPO3} moieties dimerise to form a weakly interacting (O3PH···HPO3) moiety. In the crystalline state a temperature-dependent intramolecular redox reaction and structural rearrangement occurs. This rearrangement appears to proceed via an intermediate containing two different templates, a pyramidal {HPO3} and a tetrahedral {PO4} moiety. {HPO3} templated POM cages were then vigorously expanded and led to the isolation of five either fully oxidised or mixed-valence clusters trapped with mono-, di-, or tri- {HPO3}. Interestingly, an intriguing 3D honeycomb-like host-guest structure was also synthesised. The porous framework was self-aggregated by a tri-phopshite anion templated {W21} cluster with a {VO4} templated Wells-Dawson type {W18} acting as a guest species within the hexagonal channels. Based on this work, we further extended the templating anions to two different redox-active heteroanions, and discovered a unique mixed-heteroatom templated system built by pairing redox-active {HPIIIO3} with {TeO3}, {SeO3} or {AsO3}. Two molecular systems were developed, ie. “Trojan Horse” type [W18O56(HPO3)0.8(SeO3)1.2(H2O)2]8- and cross-shaped [H4P4X4W64O224]32-/36-, where X=TeIV, SeIV, AsIII. In the case of {W18(HPO3)0.8(SeO3)1.2}, the compound is found to be a mixture of heteroleptic {W18(HPO3)(SeO3)} and homoleptic {W18(SeO3)2} and {W18(HPO3)2}, identified by single crystal x-ray diffraction, NMR as well as high resolution mass spectrometry. The cluster exhibited similar temperature-dependent electronic features to “Trojan Horse” type {W18(HPO3)2O56}. However, due to the intrinsic reactivity difference between {HPO3} and {SeO3}, the thermal treatment leads to the formation of an unusual species [W18O55(PO4)(SeO3)]5-, in which {HPO3} was fully oxidised to {PO4} within the cage, whereas and lone-pair-containing {SeO3} heteroanions were kept intact inside the shell. This finding is extremely interesting, as it demonstrated that multiple and independent intramolecular electronic performance can be achieved by the coexistence of distinct heteroatoms within a single molecule. On the other hand, the cross-shaped [H4P4X4W64O224]32-/36- were constructed by four {W15(HPO3)(XO3)} building units linked by four {WO6} octahedra. Each building unit traps two different heteroatoms. It is interesting to note that the mixed heteroatom species show self-sorting, with a highly selective positional preference. Smaller ionic sized {HPO3} are self-organised into the uncapped side of {W15} cavity, whereas closed side are occupied by larger heteroatoms, which is surprisingly opposed to steric hindrance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are currently underway to have a full understanding of the preference of heteroatom substitutions. This series of clusters is of great interest in terms of achieving single molecule-based heteroatom-dependent multiple levels of electron transfer. It has opened a new way to design and synthesise POMs with higher diversity of electrical states, which may lead to a new type of Q-bits for quantum computing. The third chapter is focused on developing polyoxotungstate building blocks templated by {HPO3}. A series of building blocks, {W15O48(HPO3)2}, {W9O30(HPO3)} {W12O40(HPO3)2} and hexagonal {W6O18(HPO3)} have been obtained. The first four building blocks have been reported with {SeO3} and/or {TeO3} heteroanions. This result demonstrates {HPO3} has a similar reactivity as {SeO3} and {TeO3}, therefore studying the self-assembly of {HPO3}-based building blocks would be helpful to have a general understanding of pyramidal heteroatom-based molecular systems. The hexagonal {W6O18(HPO3)} is observed for the first time in polyoxotungstates, showing some of reactivity difference between {HPO3} and {SeO3} and {TeO3}. Furthermore, inorganic salts and pH values have some directing influence on the formation and transformation of various building blocks, resulting in the discovery of a family of {HPO3}-based clusters with nuclearity ranging from {W29} to {W106}. High resolution mass spectrometry was also carried out to investigate the cluster solution behaviour and also gain information of building block speciation. It is found that some clusters experienced decomposition, which gives rise to potential building blocks accountable for the self-assembly.

How can we control the experimental conditions towards the isolation of specific structures? Why do particular architectures form? These are some challenging questions that synthetic chemists try to answer, specifically within polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry, where there is still much unknown regarding the synthesis of novel molecular structures in a controlled and predictive manner. This work covers a wide range of POM chemistry, exploring the redox self-assembly of polyoxometalate clusters, using both “one-pot”, flow and hydrothermal conditions. For this purpose, different vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten reagents, heteroatoms, inorganic salts and reducing agents have been used. The template effect of lone-pair containing pyramidal heteroatoms has been investigated. Efforts to synthesize new POM clusters displaying pyramidal heteroanions (XO32-, where X= S, Se, Te, P) are reported. The reaction of molybdenum with vanadium in the presence of XO32- heteroatoms is explored, showing how via the cation and experimental control it is possible to direct the self-assembly process and to isolate isostructural compounds. A series of four isostructural (two new, namely {Mo11V7P} and {Mo11V7Te} and two already known, namely {Mo11V7Se} and {Mo11V7S} disordered egg-shaped Polyoxometalates have been reported. The compounds were characterized by X-ray structural analysis, TGA, UV-Vis, FT-IR, Elemental and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS) analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Cyclic Voltammetry measurements have been carried out in all four compounds showing the effect of the ionic density of the heteroatom on the potential. High-Resolution ESI-MS studies have revealed that the structures retain their integrity in solution. Efforts to synthesize new mixed-metal compounds led to isolation, structural, and electronic characterization of the theoretically predicted, but experimentally elusive δ-isomer of the Keggin polyoxometalate cluster anion, {H2W4V9O33(C6H13NO3)}, by the reaction of tungstate(VI) and vanadium(V) with triethanolammonium ions (TEAH), acting as a tripodal ligand grafted to the surface of the cluster. Control experiments (in the absence of the organic compound) have proven that the tripodal ligand plays crucial role on the formation of the isomer. The six vanadium metal centres, which consist the upper part of the cluster, are bonded to the “capping” TEA tripodal ligand. This metal-ligand bonding directs and stabilises the formation of the final product. The δ-Keggin species was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV-vis, NMR and ESI-MS spectrometry. Electronic structure and structure-stability correlations were evaluated by means of DFT calculations. The compounds exhibited photochromic properties by undergoing single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations and changing colour under light. Non-conventional synthetic approaches are also used for the synthesis of the POM clusters comparing the classical “one-pot” reaction conditions and exploring the synthetic parameters of the synthesis of POM compounds. Reactions under hydrothermal and flow conditions, where single crystals that depend on the solubility of the minerals under hot water and high pressure can be synthesized, resulted in the isolation of two isostructural compounds, namely, {Mo12V3Te5}. The compound isolated from a continuous processing method, crystallizes in a hexagonal crystal system, forming a 2D porous plane net, while the compound isolated using hard experimental conditions (high temperature and pressure) crystallizes in monoclinic system, resulting in a different packing configuration. Utilizing these alternative synthetic approaches, the most kinetically and thermodynamically compounds would possibly be isolated. These compounds were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Finally, the redox-controlled driven oscillatory template exchange between phosphate (P) and vanadate (V) anions enclosed in an {M18O54(XO4)2} cluster is further investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy as a function of reaction time, showed that more than six complete oscillations interconverting the capsule species present in solution from {P2M18} to {V2M18} were possible, provided that a sufficient concentration of the TEA reducing agent was present in solution. In an effort to investigate the periodicity of the exchange of the phosphate and vanadate anions, time dependent Uv-vis measurements were performed for a period at a range of 170-550 hours. Different experimental conditions were also applied in order to investigate the role of the reducing agent, as well as the effect of other experimental variables on the oscillatory system.
