This article considers how T. S. Eliot's promotion of the work of the Anglo-Welsh poet David Jones after the Second World War further involved him in a process of considering the resonances of the local and familiar as operative within the displacements of modernity. This promotion therefore retrospectively prioritized an aspect of Eliot's poetics which had been present, but occluded, all along. Conversely, the article considers how similar resonances in Jones's own work were enhanced by his encounter with Eliot's translation of the Francophone Caribbean poet St-John Perse's Anabase, an encounter which enabled Jones to establish an idiom responsive to the divergent cultural affinities inherent in ‘our situation’.

This essay contributes to debates about theatre and cross-cultural encounter through an analysis of Irina Brook’s 1999 Swiss / French co-production of Irish playwright Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, in a French translation by Jean-Marie Besset. While the translation and Brook’s mise en scène clearly identified the source text and culture as Irish, they avoided cultural stereotypes, and rendered the play accessible to francophone audiences without entirely assimilating it to a specific Swiss or French cultural context. Drawing on discourses of theatre translation, and concepts of cosmopolitanism and conviviality, the essay focuses on the potential of such textual and theatrical translation to acknowledge specific cultural traces but also to estrange the familiar perceptions and boundaries of both the source and target cultures, offering modes of interconnection across diverse cultural affiliations.

Nation-building remains a key challenge in Vanuatu. From the origins of this new nation in 1980, it was clear that creating a unifying sense of national identity and political community from multiple languages and diverse traditional cultures would be difficult. This paper presents new survey and focus group data on attitudes to national identity among tertiary students in Vanuatu. The survey identifies areas of common attitudes towards nationalism and national identity, shared by both Anglophone and Francophone Ni-Vanuatu. However, despite the weakening ties between language of education and political affiliation over recent years, the findings suggest that there remain some key areas of strong association between socio-linguistic background, and attitudes to the nation, and national identity. These findings cast new light on the attitudes of likely future elites towards regional, ethnic, intergenerational and linguistic fault lines in Vanuatu and the challenges of building a cohesive sense of political community and national identity.

The focus of this dissertation is the study of work activities developed in the context of professional occupations characterized by varied previous schooling levels amongst those that work in them, and, at the same time, a high degree of complexity related to the typical tasks performed in the context of such professional practices. This dissertation intends to investigate the cook s professional activity, based on data from a determined specific professional genre in Natal (RN), in order to establish aspects related not only to the activity performed (activity which manifests itself empirically in registered behaviors), but also related to the real aspects of the work activity, that also compromises the non-realized options of the guiding of professional activity, be it by a matter of choice, be it due to the activity s own impediment. In this context, we tried to evaluate how much the professional activity observed keeps in relation to the reference practices of the professional genre, be it in terms of conformity, be it in terms of innovation (stylization) in relation to this genre. In addition, we tried to verify the contribution of the school and extra-school knowledge to the professional activity observed. Such work plan took on a preliminary step of the description of the socialprofessional profile of a cook in the city of Natal (RN), followed by a step of clinical labor approach, specifically utilizing as a methodological tool the simple and crossed self-confrontation procedure guided by the francophone theoretical referential of the Activity Clinic. The preliminary step in the description of profile of cooks from Natal (RN), of which 138 cooks took part in, evidenced three professional groupings, all predominantly masculine in their composition and fundamentally differentiated amongst each other by the time of professional activity, schooling type and time, work place and salary. The clinical approach step, composed by a pair of cooks, allowed us to verify elements of the cooks subordination to the professional genre, but also evidences of individual innovation (stylization) by these cooks, as well as the predominance of usage of extra-school knowledge when compared to school knowledge. We tried, in this step, to demonstrate how much the inclusion and submission to the genre dynamic, coordinated with the stylization initiatives, was able to contribute to the maintenance and amplification of the cook s power of acting in his professional practice.

O presente estudo versa sobre os instrumentos formativos e os processos de regulação na aprendizagem da produção escrita, em Português como língua materna. Inscreve-se na perspectiva da avaliação formativa de orientação francófona, que se focaliza nos processos de regulação e de autoavaliação, com a finalidade principal de favorecer a aprendizagem, de maneira que os próprios aprendentes possam detectar suas dificuldades e, a partir das atividades de análise propostas, desenvolver instrumentos para superá-las. Articula-se esta concepção da avaliação com os pressupostos de uma abordagem interacionista do ensino/aprendizagem de língua materna que visa, mediante atividades de linguagem significativas, promover a reflexão sobre o uso da língua e o desenvolvimento das competências discursivas. Neste contexto, relata-se um projeto de escrita de contos fantásticos, realizado em uma turma do 7º ano do ensino fundamental, no âmbito de uma pesquisa-ação, metodologia essa que permite a todos os participantes – professores e alunos – serem sujeitos mais efetivos na construção do conhecimento. No desenvolvimento do projeto de escrita adotou-se o procedimento Sequência Didática, tal como modelizado por Schneuwly e Dolz (2004), uma vez que tal procedimento se coaduna plenamente com os princípios da avaliação formativa. Ao longo da sequência foram sendo elaborados pelos participantes alguns instrumentos (listas, fichas...) com vistas à regulação dos contos produzidos e à progressiva apropriação das características do gênero em foco. Analisa-se aqui o processo de construção desses instrumentos formativos, sua utilização pelos aprendentes e os efeitos proporcionados na regulação da aprendizagem. Conclui-se que o uso de instrumentos formativos bem como a própria elaboração desses instrumentos contribuem para a aprendizagem da escrita, permitindo claramente a apropriação de critérios que haviam sido objeto de estudo, fazendo-se, no entanto, uma ressalva à necessidade de haver uma clara articulação dos instrumentos com o modelo didático elaborado no planejamento da sequência de atividades.

La négation représente une étape cruciale dans l’acquisition du langage, car elle permet à l’enfant de se positionner au sein de l’interaction, bien avant l’apparition des marques de la première personne. Si l’acquisition de la négation a déjà fait l’objet d’une description approfondie, la plupart des modèles se limitent à une approche morphosyntaxique qui néglige la prosodie. Dans cet article, nous présentons les données longitudinales d’une enfant monolingue francophone enregistrée de 14 à 28 mois, en interaction spontanée avec ses parents. L’analyse prosodique des différentes occurrences de «non» fait apparaître que les premiers «non» émergent à 14 mois sous une forme redupliquée et exagérée au niveau prosodique, suivis à 19 mois, par des «non» réalisés en isolation ou à l’intérieur d’un énoncé. De 14 à 21 mois, les «non» en isolation sont majoritairement produits avec des contours montants et une durée syllabique croissante, de 22 à 25 mois, avec des contours montant-descendant et de 26 à 28 mois, avec des contours plats ou descendants et une durée syllabique réduite. Un tel changement au niveau prosodique semble refl éter une meilleure maîtrise linguistique dans l’expression de la négation à partir de 25 mois.

A revista Fon-Fon!, periódico que circulou na primeira metade do século XX, é um importante documento no que concerne ao registro da vida socio-cultural do Brasil durante a Belle Époque. A opção por esse semanário deve-se à considerável inserção de estrangeirismos franceses nas suas colunas que, por meio de um equilíbrio razoável entre literatura, mundanismo e atualidades, desvelava o caráter francófilo e francófono da sociedade carioca. Nesse sentido, esse estudo visa mostrar, do ponto de vista lingüístico, a importância que esse periódico ocupa na representação do português brasileiro nas primeiras décadas daquele século, por meio do emprego de unidades lexicais francesas em seus artigos, revelando, assim, a significativa influência da cultura francesa no Brasil.

The theme choice was due to the interest in deepening the translational knowledge, in addition to performing an analysis of the own translation work done. Thus, the theoretical aspects related to the translation are reported throughout the work, a succinct exhibition of the history of translation, a brief view of the children's editorial market (in the world and more specifically in Brazil), the book theme and author style, and finally, the drawbacks overcome during the realization of the work - based upon the theoretical body of work consulted - and the solution encountered for this. At the end of this same work, some considerations are drawn, as well as some reflections upon the translation realized (with the studied texts attached in the body of work); accompanied by some findings observed concerning the theory
