Nanocrystalline Al(2)O(3)powders have been synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. A study of the evolution of crystalline phases of obtained powders was accomplished through X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and refinement of the structures through the Rietveld method. The results obtained allow the identification of three steps on the gamma-Al2O3 to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition. The single-phase alpha-Al2O3 Powder was obtained after heat-treatment at 1050 degrees C for 2 h. A study of the morphology of the particles was accomplished through measures of crystallite size, specific surface area and transmission electronic microscopy. The particle size is closely related to gamma-Al2O3 to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structural and vibrational properties of nanocrystalline Ga1-xMnxN films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering were analyzed in a wide composition range (0 < x < 0.18). The films were structurally characterized using x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement. The corresponding vibrational properties were investigated using micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The films present a high crystallized fraction, crystallites having wurtzite structure, and high orientation texture with the c axis oriented perpendicular to the substrate surface. Rietveld analysis indicates that Mn atoms are incorporated substitutionally into Ga positions and show that the ionic character of cation-N bonds along the c axis is favored by the Mn incorporation. No evidence for Mn segregation or Mn rich phases was found in the composition range analyzed. Micro-Raman scattering spectra and infrared absorption experiments showed progressive changes with the increase of x and monotonic shifts of the GaN TO and LO peaks to lower frequencies. The structural and vibrational analyses are compared and the influence of Mn on the static and dynamic properties of the lattice is analyzed. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We have performed dielectric and micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements in the 298 - 673 K temperature range in polycrystalline Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films prepared by a soft chemical method. The phase transition have been investigated by dielectric measurements at various frequencies during the heating cycle. It was found that the temperature corresponding to the peak value of the dielectric constant is frequency-independent, indicating a non-relaxor ferroelectric behavior. However, the dielectric constant versus temperature curves associated with the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition showed a broad maximum peak at around 433 K. The observed behavior is explained in terms of a diffuse phase transition. The obtained Raman spectra indicate the presence of a local symmetry disorder, due to a higher strontium concentration in the host lattice. The monitoring of some modes, conducted in the Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films, showed that the ferroelectric tetragonal phase undergoes a transition to the paraelectric cubic phase at around 423 K. However, the Raman activity did not disappear, as would be expected from a transition to the cubic paraelectric phase. The strong Raman spectrum observed for this cubic phase is indicative that a diffuse-type phase transition is taking place. This behavior is attributed to distortions of the perovskite structure, allowing the persistence of low-symmetry phase features in cubic phase high above the transition temperature. This result is in contrast to the forbidden first-order Raman spectrum, which would be expected from a cubic paraelectric phase, such as the one observed at high temperature in pure PbTiO3 perovskite.

Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3) thin films have been prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a soft solution processing. X-ray diffraction and also micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films exhibited a tetragonal structure at room temperature. The presence of Raman active modes was clearly shown at the 299 and 725 cm(-1) peaks. The tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition in the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films is broadened, and suppressed at about 35 degreesC, with a maximum dielectric constant of 948 (100 kHz). Electrical measurements for the prepared Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films showed a remnant polarization (P-r) of 6.5 muC/cm(2), a coercive field (E-c) of 41 kV/cm, and good insulating properties. The dispersion of the refractive index is interpreted in terms of a single electronic oscillator at 6.97 eV. The direct band gap energy (E-g) and the refractive index (n) are estimated to be 3.3 eV and n = 2.27-2.10, respectively. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Both narrow and broad photoluminescence bands were observed in Ga1-XAsX films prepared by flash evaporation of polycrystalline GaAs containing native C impurities. The observed narrow crystalline-like bands are similar to band-to-band and C acceptor impurity emissions in crystalline GaAs. The narrow bands are evidence that the As excess favors the PL active GaAs crystallite formation in films deposited onto silicon (10 0) substrate, even when the As excess is very large (X = 0.84). This favoring is not observed in twin samples grown on silica glass substrates nor on Ga rich samples, indicating the important role of the combined effect of the As excess and Si substrate in the GaAs crystallite formation. The broad amorphous-like bands were observed in Ga rich and in moderately As rich samples. The photoluminescence emission is compared with the microstructure of the material as determined from the micro-Raman, absorption edge and reflectance measurements. The volume fraction of the crystallites formed is small and PL emission indicates that the crystallite electronic quality is much better than the ones formed heat treating films grown on silica glass substrates. Single-phase perovskite structure BaZrxTi1-xO3 (BZT) (0.05less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.25) thin films were deposited on Pt-Ti-SiO2-Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The structural modifications in the thin films were studied using x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering techniques. Lattice parameters calculated from x-ray data indicate an increase in lattice (a axis) with the increasing content of zirconium in these films. Such Zr substitution also result in variations of the phonon mode wave numbers, especially those of lower wave numbers, for BaZrxTi1-xO3 thin films, corroborate to the structural change caused by the zirconium doping. on the other hand, Raman modes persist above structural phase transition, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive in the cubic phase. The origin of these modes must be interpreted as a function of a local breakdown of the cubic symmetry, which could be a result of some kind of disorder. The BZT thin films exhibited a satisfactory dielectric constant close to 181-138, and low dielectric loss tan delta<0.03 at the frequency of 1 kHz. The leakage current density of the BZT thin films was studied at elevated temperatures and the data obey the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.68, 1.39, and 1.24 eV were estimated to the BZT5, BZT15, and BZT25 thin films, respectively. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

The phase transition from the non-polar a-phase to the polar beta-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, which is advantageous for being a non-destructive technique. Films of alpha-PVDF were subjected to stretching under controlled rates and at 80 degrees C, the transition to beta-PVDF being monitored by the decrease in the Raman band at 794 cm(-1) characteristic of the a-phase, with the concomitant increase in the 839 cm(-1) band characteristic of the beta-phase. Poling with negative corona discharge was found to affect the alpha-PVDF morphology improving the Raman bands related to this crystalline phase. This effect is minimized for films stretched to higher ratios. Significantly, corona-induced effects could not be observed with the other experimental techniques, viz. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.

Films containing different volumes of latex of natural rubber (NR) in a fixed mass of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) powder were fabricated by compressing under annealing a mixture of both materials without using any solvent. This is an important issue keeping in mind that these films have to be used in the future as biomaterials in different applications once the solvents that are used to dissolve the PVDF become toxic to human. The films with different percentage of latex in PVDF were characterized using microRaman scattering and Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopies, thermomechanical techniques using thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical-mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the latex of NR and PVDF do not interact chemically, leading to the formation of a polymeric blend with high thermal stability and mechanical properties suitable for applications involving bone (prostheses, for instance). Besides, the results recorded using the micro-Raman technique revealed that for a fixed amount of PVDF the higher the amount of latex in the blend, the better the miscibility between both materials. The nanoscale interactions between adjacent layers of layer-by-layer (LBL) films from poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and azodye Brilliant Yellow (BY) have been investigated, with the films employed for optical storage and the formation of surface-relief gratings. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we identified interactions involving SO3- groups from BY and NH3+ groups from PAH. These electrostatic interactions were responsible for the slow kinetics of writing in the optical storage experiments, due to a tendency to hinder photoisomerization and the subsequent reorientation of the azochromophores. The photoinduced birefringence did not saturate after one hour of exposure to the writing laser, whereas in azopolymer films, saturation is normally reached within a few minutes. on the other hand, the presence of such interactions prevented thermal relaxation of the chromophores after the writing laser was switched off, leading to a very stable written pattern. Moreover, the nanoscale interactions promoted mass transport for photoinscription of surface-relief gratings on PAH/BY LBL films, with the azochromophores being able to drag the inert PAH chains when undergoing the trans-cis-trans photoisomerization cycles. A low level of chromophore degradation was involved in the SRG photoinscription, which was confirmed with micro-Raman and fluorescence spectroscopies.

The evolution of As excess in As-rich Ga1-xAsx films is analyzed for distinct As concentrations and different annealing temperatures. Initially the samples are amorphous and crystallize partially after thermal annealing. The formation of both amorphous and crystalline As clusters is examined by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis. When highly and moderately unbalanced materials are compared, differences are clearly observed concerning the crystallization temperature and the migration kinetics of the As excess. These differences are explained by the fort-nation of As precipitates around the GaAs crystallites in the moderately unbalanced material, contrasting with the migration of the As excess to the film surface in the highly unbalanced material.
