With the adoption of evidence-based practices as the standard by which offender interventions are evaluated for effectiveness in the Iowa Department of Corrections, the Victim Advisory Council deemed it critical to form an ad hoc committee to evaluate the Victim Impact Class (VIC)intervention used in institutions and community-based corrections across the state to determine its efficacy and adherence to that new standard.

ABSTRACT Particle density, gravimetric and volumetric water contents and porosity are important basic concepts to characterize porous systems such as soils. This paper presents a proposal of an experimental method to measure these physical properties, applicable in experimental physics classes, in porous media samples consisting of spheres with the same diameter (monodisperse medium) and with different diameters (polydisperse medium). Soil samples are not used given the difficulty of working with this porous medium in laboratories dedicated to teaching basic experimental physics. The paper describes the method to be followed and results of two case studies, one in monodisperse medium and the other in polydisperse medium. The particle density results were very close to theoretical values for lead spheres, whose relative deviation (RD) was -2.9 % and +0.1 % RD for the iron spheres. The RD of porosity was also low: -3.6 % for lead spheres and -1.2 % for iron spheres, in the comparison of procedures – using particle and porous medium densities and saturated volumetric water content – and monodisperse and polydisperse media.

Este artigo descreve os propósitos, a metodologia e os resultados de um estudo avaliativo sobre a implantação do Projeto das Classes de Aceleração no Estado de São Paulo. A realização de seis estudos de caso, em escolas nas quais a implantação foi considerada bem-sucedida, permitiu identificar fatores de sucesso do projeto. A análise de provas de desempenho e de auto-estima de alunos egressos da classes de aceleração indicou a importância de incorporar ao projeto, medidas de médio e longo prazo que ajudem a manter os resultados positivos alcançados.

En aquest treball demostrem que en la classe de jocs d'assignació amb diagonal dominant (Solymosi i Raghavan, 2001), el repartiment de Thompson (que coincideix amb el valor tau) és l'únic punt del core que és maximal respecte de la relació de dominància de Lorenz, i a més coincideix amb la solucié de Dutta i Ray (1989), també coneguda com solució igualitària. En segon lloc, mitjançant una condició més forta que la de diagonal dominant, introduïm una nova classe de jocs d'assignació on cada agent obté amb la seva parella òptima almenys el doble que amb qualsevol altra parella. Per aquests jocs d'assignació amb diagonal 2-dominant, el repartiment de Thompson és l'únic punt del kernel, i per tant el nucleolo.

There is in Catalan a set of verbs, the so-called «velar verbs», whose differential characteristic consists in presenting a velar segment between the root and the inflectional suffixes in certain morphosyntactic contexts. This velar segment has traditionally been considered as being part of the root in the contexts where it occurs, and has been made responsible for the typical allomorphic character of velar verbs. Under the assumption that regular verbs are only one-root verbs, velar verbs have been treated as irregular verbs. Nevertheless, neither the phonic character of the velar segment nor the marginal character of velar verbs is clear. The aim of this paper is to present a different account of velar verbs on the basis of the inflectional morphological character of the velar segment. The work is split into two parts. The first one focuses on standard Catalan, and tries to show that in this variety velar verbs are better treated as regular verbs. The second one focuses on other Catalan varieties, and aims to exhibit the incoherence implied in the traditional treatment of velar verbs in the context of the Catalan language as a whole. The discussion is mainly developed on morphological grounds, halfway between theory and description.

La autora revisa diferentes usos de las observaciones de clases, en particular en lo que se refiere a las clases de lengua extrangera, tanto en investigación como en formación. A partir de algunos ejemplos, identifica, entre la diversidad de formas de aplicación, objetivos diferentes y modelos de formación diversos, considerando que éstos no se excluyen sino que se complementan, según su adecuación a cada situación de formación. Se comentan algunos problemas con el fin de iniciar una reflexión sobre la aplicación de las observaciones de clase a la formación, que debería proseguir con trabajos de investigación y encuentros de formadores.

Aquest article se centra en l'estudi de la relació de les classes populars amb la cultura escrita a l'època contemporània. Els exemples que s'exposen es refereixen bàsicament a la ciutat de Reus al segle XIX, tot i que també hi ha altres referències. En un primer moment s'estudia l'accés de les classes populars a la cultura escrita a través de l'escola. També hi ha una anàlisi d'alguns àmbits extraacadèmics on hom pot obtenir els mecanismes per accedir a la lectura i l'escriptura. Entre ells s'han escollit les associacions i les presons. Finalment, s'analitzen alguns testimonis escrits de les classes populars.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), a proinflammatory cytokine, is considered an attractive therapeutic target in multiple inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. In addition to its known biologic activities, MIF can also function as a tautomerase. Several small molecules have been reported to be effective inhibitors of MIF tautomerase activity in vitro. Herein we employed a robust activity-based assay to identify different classes of novel inhibitors of the catalytic and biological activities of MIF. Several novel chemical classes of inhibitors of the catalytic activity of MIF with IC(50) values in the range of 0.2-15.5 microm were identified and validated. The interaction site and mechanism of action of these inhibitors were defined using structure-activity studies and a battery of biochemical and biophysical methods. MIF inhibitors emerging from these studies could be divided into three categories based on their mechanism of action: 1) molecules that covalently modify the catalytic site at the N-terminal proline residue, Pro(1); 2) a novel class of catalytic site inhibitors; and finally 3) molecules that disrupt the trimeric structure of MIF. Importantly, all inhibitors demonstrated total inhibition of MIF-mediated glucocorticoid overriding and AKT phosphorylation, whereas ebselen, a trimer-disrupting inhibitor, additionally acted as a potent hyperagonist in MIF-mediated chemotactic migration. The identification of biologically active compounds with known toxicity, pharmacokinetic properties, and biological activities in vivo should accelerate the development of clinically relevant MIF inhibitors. Furthermore, the diversity of chemical structures and mechanisms of action of our inhibitors makes them ideal mechanistic probes for elucidating the structure-function relationships of MIF and to further determine the role of the oligomerization state and catalytic activity of MIF in regulating the function(s) of MIF in health and disease.

En aquest article es presenta el procés metodològic, com també les tècniques d'anàlisi de dades, que s'ha utilitzat en l'anàisi dels grups socials mitjançant la informació d'una gran enquesta sobre hàbits i condicions de vida. L'anàlisi dels grups socials des d'una perspectiva globalitzadora i estructuradora de les condicions de vida, tenint en compte com aquests sorgeixen mitjançant I 'associació i la coherència entre múltiples característiques. Les tècniques d'anàlisi de dades que s'han utilitzat han estat l'anàlisi de correspondències múltiples i l'anàlisi de classificació.
