We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). Interaction of CH3OH with Cu clusters deposited on ZnO films grown on a Zn foil as well as on a ZnO(0001)Zn crystal, has been examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On clean Cu clusters, reversible molecular adsorption or formation of CH3O is observed. However if the Cu clusters are pretreated with oxygen, both CH3O and HCOO- species are produced. Model Cu/ZnO catalyst surfaces, containing both Cu1+ and Cu-0 species, show interesting oxidation properties. On a Cu-0-rich catalyst surface, only CH3O species is formed on interaction with CH3OH. On a Cu1+-rich surface, however, HCOO- ion is the predominant species.

Thin films of ZnO, Li doped ZnO (ZLO) and multilayer of ZnO and ZLO (ZnO/ZLO) were grown on silicon and corning glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Single phase formation and the crystalline qualities of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Li composition in the film was investigated to be 15 wt% by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman spectrum reveals the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO multilayer and confirms the single phase formation. Films grown on corning glass shows more than 80% transmittance in the visible region and the optical band gaps were calculated to be 3.245, 3.26 and 3.22 eV for ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO, respectively. An efficient blue emission was observed in all films which were grown on silicon (1 0 0) substrate by photoluminescence (PL). PL measurements at different temperatures reveal that the PL emission intensity of ZnO/ZLO multilayer was weakly dependent on temperature as compared to the single layers of ZnO and ZLO and the wavelength of emission was independent of temperature. Our results indicate that ZnO/ZLO multilayer can be used for the fabrication of blue light emitting diodes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnO nanostructured films were deposited at room temperature on glass substrates and cotton fabrics by activated reactive evaporation in a single step without using metal catalyst or templates. Morphological observation has shown that the nanostructured film contains seaurchin-like structures, and this seaurchin containing large number of randomly grown ZnO nanoneedles. Microstructural analysis revealed the single crystalline nature of the grown nanoneedles and their growth direction was indentified to be along [0002]. PL spectrum of nanostructured films has shown a relatively weak near-band-edge emission peak at 380 nm, and a significant broad peak at 557 nm due to the oxygen vacancy-related emission. ZnO nanostructured films grown on glass substrates and cotton fabrics have shown good photocatalytic activity against rhodamine B.

The effect of Mg doping in ZnO is investigated through structural, electrical, and optical properties. Zn1−xMgxO (0<×<0.3) thin films were deposited on Si (100) and corning glass substrates using multimagnetron sputtering. Investigations on the structural properties of the films revealed that the increase in Mg concentration resulted in phase evolution from hexagonal to cubic phase. The temperature dependent study of dielectric constant at different frequencies exhibited a dielectric anomaly at 110 °C. The Zn0.7Mg0.3O thin films exhibited a well-defined polarization hysteresis loop with a remnant polarization of 0.2 μC/cm2 and coercive field of 8 kV/cm at room temperature. An increase in the band gap with an increase in Mg content was observed in the range of 3.3–3.8 eV for x = 0–0.3. The average transmittance of the films was higher than 90% in the wavelength region λ = 400–900 nm.

ZnO/Si heterojunctions were fabricated by growing ZnO thin films on p-type Si (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition without buffer layers. The crystallinity of the heterojunction was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The optical quality of the film was analyzed by room temperature (RT) photoluminescence measurements. The high intense band to band emission confirmed the high quality of the ZnO thin films on Si. The electrical properties of the junction were studied by temperature dependent current-voltage measurements and RT capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. The charge carrier concentration and the barrier height (BH) were calculated, to be 5.6x10(19) cm(-3) and 0.6 eV respectively from the C-V plot. The BH and ideality factor, calculated using the thermionic emission (TE) model, were found to be highly temperature dependent. We observed a much lower value in Richardson constant, 5.19x10(-7)A/cm(2) K-2 than the theoretical value (32 A/cm(2) K-2) for ZnO. This analysis revealed the existence of a Gaussian distribution (GD) with a standard deviation of sigma(2)=0.035 V. By implementing the GD to the TE, the values of BH and Richardson constant were obtained as 1.3 eV and 39.97 A/cm(2) K-2 respectively from the modified Richardson plot. The obtained Richardson constant value is close to the theoretical value for n-ZnO. These high quality heterojunctions can be used for solar cell applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Pure and tin doped zinc oxide (Sn:ZnO) thin films were prepared for the first time by NSP technique using aqueous solutions of zinc acetate dehydrate, tin (IV) chloride fendahydrate and methanol. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the films are polycrystalline in nature exhibiting hexagonal wurtzite type, with (0 0 2) as preferred orientation. The structural parameters such as lattice constant ('a' and `c'), crystallite size, dislocation density, micro strain, stress and texture coefficient were calculated from X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology was found to be modified with increasing Sn doping concentration. The ZnO films have high transmittance 85% in the visible region, and the transmittance is found to be decreased with the increase of Sn doping concentration. The corresponding optical band gap decreases from 3.25 to 3.08 eV. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals the sharp emission of strong UV peak at 400 nm (3.10 eV) and a strong sharp green luminescence at 528 nm (2.34 eV) in the Sn doped ZnO films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(6) Omega-cm at higher temperature and 10(5) Omega-cm at lower temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanostructured GdxZn1-xO thin films with different Gd concentration from 0% to 10% deposited at 400 degrees C using the NSF technique. The films were characterized by structural, surface and optical properties, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the Gd doped ZnO films have lattice parameters a = 3.2497 angstrom and c = 5.2018 angstrom with hexagonal structure and preferential orientation along (002) plane. The estimated values compare well with the standard values. When film thickness increases from 222 to 240 nm a high visible region transmittance (>70%) is observed. The optical band gap energy, optical constants (n and k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), and epsilon(i)) and optical conductivities (sigma(r), and sigma(i)) were calculated from optical transmittance data. The optical band gap energy is 3.2 eV for pure ZnO film and 3.6 eV for Gd0.1Zn0.9-O film. The PL studies confirm the presence of a strong UV emission peak at 399 nm. Besides, the UV emission of ZnO films decreases with the increase of Gd doping concentration correspondingly the ultra-violet emission is replaced by blue and green emissions.

Sodium doped zinc oxide (Na:ZnO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates at substrate temperatures 300,400 and 500 degrees C by a novel nebulizer spray method. X-ray diffraction shows that all the films are polycrystalline in nature having hexagonal structure with high preferential orientation along (0 0 2) plane. High resolution SEM studies reveal the formation of Na-doped ZnO films having uniformly distributed nano-rods over the entire surface of the substrates at 400 degrees C. The complex impedance of the ZnO nano-rods shows two distinguished semicircles and the diameter of the arcs got decreased in diameter as the temperature increases from 170 to 270 degrees C and thereafter slightly increased. Highly branched and porous graphene nanosheet synthesized over different substrates as anode for Lithium ion thin film battery. These films synthesized by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at temperature 700 degrees C. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy are used to characterize the film surface. It is found that the graphene sheets possess a curled and flower like morphology. Electrochemical performances were evaluated in swezelock type cells versus metallic lithium. A reversible capacity of 520 mAh/g, 450 mAh/g and 637 mAh/g was obtained after 50 cycles when current rate at 23 mu A cm(2) for CuGNS, NiGNS and PtGNS electrodes, respectively. Electrochemical properties of thin film anode were measured at different current rate and gave better cycle life and rate capability. These results indicate that the prepared high quality graphene sheets possess excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thin films of CexZn1-xO thin films were deposited on glass substrates at 400 degrees C by nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. Ce doping concentration (x) was varied from 0 to 10%, in steps of 2.5%. X-ray diffraction reveals that all the films have polycrystalline nature with hexagonal crystal structure and high preferential orientation along (002) plane. Optical parameters such as; transmittance, band gap energy, refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), epsilon(i)) and optical conductivity (sigma(r), sigma(i)) have been determined and discussed with respect to Ce concentration. All the films exhibit transmittance above 80% in the wavelength range from 330 to 2500 nm. Optical transmission measurements indicate the decrease of direct band gap energy from 3.26 to 3.12 eV with the increase of Ce concentration. Photoluminescence spectra show strong near band edge emission centered similar to 398 nm and green emission centered similar to 528 nm with excitation wavelength similar to 350 nm. High resolution scanning electron micrographs indicate the formation of vertical nano-rod like structures on the film surface with average diameter similar to 41 nm. Electrical properties of the Ce doped ZnO film have been studied using ac impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 100 Hz-1 MHz at different temperatures. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Permanent plastic deformation induced by mechanical contacts affects the shape recovery of shape memory alloys. To understand the shape recovery of NiTiCu thin films subjected to local contact stresses, systematic investigations are carried out by inducing varying levels of contact stresses using nanoindentation. The resulting indents are located precisely for imaging using a predetermined array consisting of different sized indents. Morphology and topography of these indents before and after shape recovery are characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope and Atomic Force Microscope quantitatively. Shape recovery is found to be dependent on the contact stresses at the low loads while the recovery ratio remains constant at 0.13 for higher loads. Shape recovery is found to occur mainly in depth direction of the indent, while far field residual stresses play very little role in the recovery. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two different soft-chemical, self-assembly-based solution approaches are employed to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with controlled texture. The methods used involve seeding and growth on a substrate. Nanorods with various aspect ratios (1-5) and diameters (15-65 nm) are grown. Obtaining highly oriented rods is determined by the way the substrate is mounted within the chemical bath. Furthermore, a preheat and centrifugation step is essential for the optimization of the growth solution. In the best samples, we obtain ZnO nanorods that are almost entirely oriented in the (002) direction; this is desirable since electron mobility of ZnO is highest along this crystallographic axis. When used as the buffer layer of inverted organic photovoltaics (I-OPVs), these one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures offer: (a) direct paths for charge transport and (b) high interfacial area for electron collection. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of ZnO nanorods are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the surface chemical features of ZnO films are studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Using as-grown ZnO, inverted OPVs are fabricated and characterized. For improving device performance, the ZnO nanorods are subjected to UV-ozone irradiation. UV-ozone treated ZnO nanorods show: (i) improvement in optical transmission, (ii) increased wetting of active organic components, and (iii) increased concentration of Zn-O surface bonds. These observations correlate well with improved device performance. The devices fabricated using these optimized buffer layers have an efficiency of similar to 3.2% and a fill factor of 0.50; this is comparable to the best I-OPVs reported that use a P3HT-PCBM active layer.

Al-doped ZnO thin films were synthesized from oxygen reactive co-sputtering of Al and Zn targets. Explicit doping of Al in the highly c-axis oriented crystalline films of ZnO was manifested in terms of structural optical and electrical properties. Electrical conduction with different extent of Al doping into the crystal lattice of ZnO (AZnO) were characterized by frequency dependent (40 Hz-50 MHz) resistance. From the frequency dependent resistance, the ac conduction of them, and correlations of localized charge particles in the crystalline films were studied. The dc conduction at the low frequency region was found to increase from 8.623 mu A to 1.14 mA for the samples AZnO1 (1 wt% Al) and AZnO2 (2 wt% Al), respectively. For the sample AZnO10 (10 wt% Al) low frequency dc conduction was not found due to the electrode polarization effect. The measure of the correlation length by inverse of threshold frequency (omega(0)) showed that on application of a dc electric field such length decreases and the decrease in correlation parameter(s) indicates that the correlation between potentials wells of charge particles decreases for the unidirectional nature of dc bias. The comparison between the correlation length and the extent of correlation in the doped ZnO could not be made due to the observation of several threshold frequencies at the extent of higher doping. Such threshold frequencies were explained by the population possibility of correlated charge carriers that responded at different frequencies. For AZnO2 (2% Al), the temperature dependent (from 4.5 to 288 K) resistance study showed that the variable range hopping mechanism was the most dominating conduction mechanism at higher temperature whereas at low temperature region it was influenced by the small polaronic hopping conduction mechanism. There was no significant influence found in these mechanisms on applications of 1, 2 and 3 V as biases.

The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution.
