Recently, the observation of a new monoclinic phase in the PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT) system in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary was reported. Investigations of this new phase were reported using different techniques such as high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. In this work, the monoclinic --> tetragonal phase transition in PbZr0.50Ti0.50O3 ceramics was studied using infrared spectroscopy between 1000 and 400 cm(-1). The four possible nu(1)-stretching modes (Ti-O and Zr-O stretch) in the BO6 octahedron in the ABO(3) structure of PZT in this region were monitored as a function of temperature. The lower-frequency mode nu(1)-(Zr-O) remains practically unaltered, while both intermediate nu(1)-(Ti-O) modes decrease linearly as temperature increases from 89 to 263 K. In contrast, the higher-frequency nu(1)-(Ti-O) and nu(1)-(Zr-O) modes present anomalous behaviour around 178 K. The singularity observed at this mode was associated with the monoclinic --> tetragonal phase transition in PbZr0.50Ti0.50O3 ceramics.

One of the main applications of methane is in the production of syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Procedures used in this process are steam reforming, CO2 reforming, partial oxidation and autothermal reforming. The present study evaluated and compared the behavior of nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxides of cerium and manganese in the partial oxidation of methane with that of nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxides of cerium and zirconium. Mixed oxides of cerium and zirconium or cerium and manganese were synthesized using two different preparation methods, the polymeric precursor based on Pechini method and combustion reaction using a microwave. This was followed by impregnation with nickel content of 15 %. Samples were calcined at 300, 800 and 900 °C and characterized by specific surface area (SSA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and the reaction of partial oxidation of methane. The specific areas of samples decrease with the rise in calcination temperature and after nickel impregnation. Metal-cerium solid solution was formed and the presence of other manganese species outside the solid solution structure was confirmed in the compound with the highest amounts of manganese oxides showed. With regard to scanning electron microscopy, supports based on cerium and zirconium prepared by Pechini method exhibited agglomerated particles without uniform geometry or visible pores on the surface. However, compounds containing manganese presented empty spaces in its structure. Through synthesis by combustion reaction, morphology acquired independently of the proposed composition demonstrated greater porosity in relation to Pechini synthesis. Although catalysts were prepared using different synthesis methods, the insertion of nickel showed very similar reduction profiles (TPR). In relation to nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium, there is an initial reduction of NiO species that present certain interaction with the support. This is followed by the reduction of Ce4+ in Ce3+ surface, with subsequent bulk reduction. For catalysts containing manganese, a reduction of nickel oxide species occurs, followed by two stages of reduction for species Mn2O3 in Mn3O4 and Mn3O4 in MnO, with subsequent reduction of bulk. With respect to partial oxidation reactions, the nickel catalyst supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium, prepared using the Pechini method, exhibited CH4 conversion of approximately 80 %, with conversion of 81 % when prepared by combustion. This behavior continued for 10 hours of reaction. Manganese content was also found to directly influence catalytic activity of materials; the greater the manganese oxide content, the faster deactivation and destabilization occurred in the catalyst. In both synthesis methods, the nickel catalyst supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium maintained an H2/CO ratio very close to 2 during the 10 hours of partial oxidation reaction. Samples containing manganese displayed smaller H2/CO ratios and lower performance in partial oxidation.
Strain and vacancy cluster behavior of vanadium and tungsten-doped Ba[Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90)]O(3) ceramics
Resumo:
Strain and vacancy clusters behavior of polycrystalline vanadium (V) and tungsten (W)-doped Ba[Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90)]O(3), (BZT:2%V) and (BZT:2%W) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method was evaluated. Substitution of V and W reduces the distortion of octahedral clusters, decreasing the Raman modes. Electron paramagnetic resonance data indicate that the addition of dopants leads to defects and symmetry changes in the BZT lattice. Remnant polarization and coercive field are affected by V and W substitution due the electron-relaxation mode. The unipolar strain E curves as a function of electric field reach its maximum value for BZT:2%V and BZT:2%W ceramics. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Ba(Zr0.50Ti0.50)O-3 thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method using the annealing low temperature of 300 degrees C for 8, 16, 24, 48, 96 and 192 It in a furnace tube with oxygen atmosphere. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the film annealed for 192 h presented some crystallographic planes (1 0 0), (1 1 0) and (2 0 0) in its crystalline lattice. Fourier transformed infrared presented the formation of metal-oxygen stretching at around 756 cm(-1). The atomic force microscopy analysis presented the growth of granules in the Ba(Zr0.50Ti0.50)O-3 films annealed from 8 to 96 h. The crystalline film annealed for 192 h already presents grains in its perovskite structure. It evidenced a reduction in the thickness of the thin films with the increase of the annealing time. The correlation between experimental data and theoretical calculations have been investigated to explain the photoluminescence at room temperature of Ba(Ti0.75Zr0.25)O-3 (BTZ) thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The degree of structural order-disorder was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models. The electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the PL behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels and a charge gradient in the band gap due to a break in symmetry, are responsible for the PL in disordered BTZ lattice. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Making heterolayered perovskite materials constitutes an approach for the creation of better dielectric and ferroelectric properties. In the experiment reported here, heterolayered PZT40/PZT60 films were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) by a chemical solution deposition. The dielectric constant of the heterolayered thin film was significantly enhanced compared with that of pure PZT40 and PZT60 thin films. A dielectric constant of 701 at 100 kHz was observed for a stacking periodicity of six layers having a total thickness of 150 nm. The heterolayered film exhibited greater remanent polarization than PZT60 and PZT40 films. The values of remanent polarization were 7.9, 18.5, and 31 muC/cm(2), respectively, for pure PZT60, PZT40, and heterolayered thin films, suggesting that the superior dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the heterolayered thin film resulted from a cooperative interaction between the ferroelectric phases made from alternating tetragonal and rhombohedral phases of PZT, simulating the morphotropic phase boundary of this system. Ti(IV), Zr(IV) and Pb(II) complexes with 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline (5-NQ) were obtained by precipitation in acetone/ammonium solution medium. The compounds TiO(C9H5N2O3)(2).0.5H(2)O, ZrO(C9H5N2O3)(2)2H(2)O and Pb(C9H5N2O3)(2) were characterized by Elemental Analysis, X-ray Diffratometry and Infrared Absorption Spectrometry and their thermal behavior followed by TG/DTA. This present study intends to show the variations in the thermal behavior of the compounds and in the composition and/or structure of final oxide residues, in different atmospheres and heating rates.

High-quality ABO(3)/LaNiO3 (A = Ph, Ca, Ba; B = Ti, Zr) hetero structures have been grown on LaAlO3 (1 0 0) substrate by the chemical solution deposition method and crystallized by a microwave oven technique. The structural, morphological and electric properties were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), and dielectric and ferroelectric measurements. XRD patterns revealed single-phase polycrystalline and oriented thin films whose feature depends on the composition of the films. The AFM surface morphologies showed a smooth and crack-free surface with the average grain size ranging from 116 to 300 nm for both LaNiO3 electrode and the ferroelectric films. Dielectric measurements on these samples revealed dielectric constants as high as 1800 at frequency of 100 KHz. Such results showed that the combination of the chemical solution method with the microwave process provides a promising technique to grow high-quality thin films with good dielectric and ferroelectric properties. Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (PZT) thin films were prepared with success by the polymeric precursor method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the formation of the PZT perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the film showed good crystallinity and no presence of secondary phases was identified. This indicates that the PZT thin films were crystallized in a single phase. PZT thin films showed a well-developed dense grain structure with uniform distribution, without the presence of rosette structure. The Raman spectra undoubtedly revealed these thin films in the tetragonal phase. For the thin films annealed at the 500-700 degreesC range, the vibration modes of the oxygen sublattice of the PZT perovskite phase were confirmed by FT-IR. The room temperature dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT films, measured at 1 kHz were 646 and 0.090, respectively, for thin film with 365 nm thickness annealed at 700 degreesC for 2 h. A typical P-E hysteresis loop was observed and the measured values of P-s, P-r and E-c were 68 muC/cm(2), 44 muC/cm(2) and 123 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current density was about 4.8 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1.5 V. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Internal friction and frequency measurements as a function of temperature have been carried out in Nb and Nb-Zr policrystalline samples, using a torsion pendulum in the temperature range between 300K and 700K the heating rate was 1K/min and the pressure was kept better than 5x10(-3) mbar. Metals with bce lattice containing solute atoms dissolved interstitially often show anelastic behaviour due to a process know as stress-induced ordering responsible for the appearance of Snoek peaks. In the Nb sample it has been identified two constituent peaks corresponding to the interstitial-matrix interactions (Nb-O and Nb-N), but for the Nb-Zr samples with interstitial solute concentrations very close to those measured for the unalloyed Nb, it was not observed any mechanical relaxation peaks due to the presence of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution.
