Aitchison Geometry for Probability and Likelihood as a new approach to mathematical statistics

The Aitchison vector space structure for the simplex is generalized to a Hilbert space structure A2(P) for distributions and likelihoods on arbitrary spaces. Central notations of statistics, such as Information or Likelihood, can be identified in the algebraical structure of A2(P) and their corresponding notions in compositional data analysis, such as Aitchison distance or centered log ratio transform. In this way very elaborated aspects of mathematical statistics can be understood easily in the light of a simple vector space structure and of compositional data analysis. E.g. combination of statistical information such as Bayesian updating, combination of likelihood and robust M-estimation functions are simple additions/ perturbations in A2(Pprior). Weighting observations corresponds to a weighted addition of the corresponding evidence. Likelihood based statistics for general exponential families turns out to have a particularly easy interpretation in terms of A2(P). Regular exponential families form finite dimensional linear subspaces of A2(P) and they correspond to finite dimensional subspaces formed by their posterior in the dual information space A2(Pprior). The Aitchison norm can identified with mean Fisher information. The closing constant itself is identified with a generalization of the cummulant function and shown to be Kullback Leiblers directed information. Fisher information is the local geometry of the manifold induced by the A2(P) derivative of the Kullback Leibler information and the space A2(P) can therefore be seen as the tangential geometry of statistical inference at the distribution P. The discussion of A2(P) valued random variables, such as estimation functions or likelihoods, give a further interpretation of Fisher information as the expected squared norm of evidence and a scale free understanding of unbiased reasoning

Group preference structures in AHP–group decision making

This paper presents a procedure that allows us to determine the preference structures (PS) associated to each of the different groups of actors that can be identified in a group decision making problem with a large number of individuals. To that end, it makes use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) (Saaty, 1980) as the technique to solve discrete multicriteria decision making problems. This technique permits the resolution of multicriteria, multienvironment and multiactor problems in which subjective aspects and uncertainty have been incorporated into the model, constructing ratio scales corresponding to the priorities relative to the elements being compared, normalised in a distributive manner (wi = 1). On the basis of the individuals’ priorities we identify different clusters for the decision makers and, for each of these, the associated preference structure using, to that end, tools analogous to those of Multidimensional Scaling. The resulting PS will be employed to extract knowledge for the subsequent negotiation processes and, should it be necessary, to determine the relative importance of the alternatives being compared using anyone of the existing procedures

Enhancing learning beyond the classroom: blogging and other social networking tools

Blogging has become one of the key ingredients of the so-called socials networks. This phenomenon has indeed invaded the world of education. Connections between people, comments on each other posts, and assessment of innovation are usually interesting characteristics of blogs related to students and scholars. Blogs have become a kind of new form of authority, bringing about (divergent) discussions which lead to creation of knowledge. The use of blogs as an innovative, educational tool is not at all new. However, their use in universities is not very widespread yet. Blogging for personal affairs is rather commonplace, but blogging for professional affairs – teaching, research and service, is scarce, despite the availability of ready-to-use, free tools. Unfortunately, Information Society has not reached yet enough some universities: not only are (student) blogs scarcely used as an educational tool, but it is quite rare to find a blog written by University professors. The Institute of Computational Chemistry of the University of Girona and the Department of Chemistry of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has joined forces to create “InnoCiència”, a new Group on Digital Science Communitation. This group, formed by ca. ten researchers, has promoted the use of blogs, twitters. wikis and other tools of Web 2.0 in activities in Catalonia concerning the dissemination of Science, like Science Week, Open Day or Researchers’ Night. Likewise, its members promote use of social networking tools in chemistry- and communication-related courses. This communication explains the outcome of social-network experiences with teaching undergraduate students and organizing research communication events. We provide live, hands-on examples and interactive ground to show how blogs and twitters can be used to enhance the yield of teaching and research. Impact of blogging and other social networking tools on the outcome of the learning process is very depending on the target audience and the environmental conditions. A few examples are provided and some proposals to use these techniques efficiently to help students are hinted

Public and student awareness science: recreational science as a catalyst

When discussing the traditional and new missions of higher education (1996 Report to UNESCO of the International Commission on Education for the 21st Century) Jacques Delors stated that "Excessive attraction to social sciences has broken equilibrium of available graduates for workforce, thus causing doubts of graduates and employers on the quality of knowledge provided by higher education". Likewise, when discussing the progress of science and technology, the 1998 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education concluded that "Another challenge concerts the latest advancements of Science, the sine qua non of sustainable development"; and that “with Information Technology, the unavoidable invasion of virtual reality has increased the distance between industrial and developing countries". Recreational Science has a long tradition all over the Educational World; it aims to show the basic aspects of Science, aims to entertain, and aims to induce thinking. Until a few years ago, this field of knowledge consisted of a few books, a few kits and other classical (yet innovative) ways to popularize the knowledge of Nature and the laws governing it. In Spain, the interest for recreational science has increased in the last years. First, new recreational books are being published and found in bookstores. Second the number of Science-related museums and exhibits is increasing. And third, new television shows are produced and new short science-based, superficial sketches are found in variety programs. However, actual programs in Spanish television dealing seriously with Science are scarce. Recreational Science, especially that related to physical phenomena like light or motion, is generally found at Science Museums because special equipment is required. On the contrary, Science related mathematics, quizzes and puzzles use to gather into books, e.g. the extensive collections by Martin Gardner. However, lately Science podcasts have entered the field of science communication. Not only traditional science journals and television channels are providing audio and video podcasts, but new websites deal exclusively with science podcasts, in particular on Recreational Science. In this communication we discuss the above mentioned trends and show our experience in the last two years in participating at Science Fairs and university-sponsored events to attract students to science and technology careers. We show a combination of real examples (e.g., mathemagic), imagination, use of information technology, and use of social networks. We present as well an experience on designing a computational, interactive tool to promote chemistry among high school, prospective students using computers ("Dancing with Bionanomolecules"). Like the concepts related to Web 2.0, it has been already proposed that a new framework for communication of science is emerging, i.e., Science Communication 2.0, where people and institutions develop new innovative ways to explain science topics to diverse publics – and where Recreational Science is likely to play a leading role

Gènere i lideratge a l'administració pública de Girona [versió html]

L'objectiu de la publicació és mostrar els resultats obtinguts en l'anàlisi dels trets bàsics de l'estudi dintre l'Administració Autonòmica de Girona, que són: identificació de la població directiva pel que fa a la quantitat i al perfil; vies d'accés a la direcció; obstacles per assolir i desenvolupar el càrrec; dificultats per conciliar família i treball; característiques i estils de lideratge. Alhora, es pretén donar una visió global del desenvolupament de polítiques i de la seva aplicació a les administracions. El projecte s'ha desenvolupat en el marc de la convocatòria de subvencions per a treballs de recerca sobre Administració pública (2005) promoguda per l'Escola d'Administració Pública de Catalunya i la publicació ha estat editada gràcies a l'ajut per a activitats de projecció del Consell Social de la Universitat de Girona (ref. EPP2/06 )

Projecte HIFA: xarxa dinamitzadora i fomentadora del tercer sector

El Projecte Hifa és una xarxa dinamitzadora del tercer sector (entitats, associacions, fundacions, etc.) i fomentadora de la participació ciutadana des d'aquest àmbit. Té una marcada transversalitat d'àmbits d'actuació, ja que cada entitat treballa sobre el tema que l'incumbeix. Tot i això, el motor de la xarxa son les entitats naturalistes, conservacionistes i totes aquelles que directe o indirectament treballin en temes ambientals, per tal que, a mesura que s'estableixin relacions amb entitats d'altres àmbits, les vagin influenciant i ambientalitzant, enriquint-se al seu torn amb les experiències que els ofereixin aquestes. Per tal d'agilitzar la implementació de la xarxa, el mètode més eficaç és acotant l'àmbit geogràfic a un nivell que generi quantitats d’informació fàcilment gestionable, i a partir d'aquí, anar creixent de forma horitzontal, no jeràrquica, creant cèl•lules noves en altres parts del territori i connectant-les entre elles. El Projecte Hifa comença per establir-se a la comarca del Gironès, ja que és una comarca on conviuen àmbits rurals amb urbans, però amb un marcat desequilibri en favor de l'últim. Això permet englobar els dos àmbits dins de la xarxa, amb l’al•licient que les dades són comparables i es poden generar estudis de diferenciació entre 3r sector rural i 3r sector urbà

Projecte de desenvolupament agroeconòmic i social del poblat d’ Atitsohoe, Togo, Àfrica

La motivació principal d’aquest treball ha estat la de conèixer una realitat agrícola i social d’una àrea limitada però, representativa en un país en via de desenvolupament com és Togo. El protocol de treball ha permès recollir informació tant sobre l’organització social del poble d’Atitsohoe com les varies fases del maneig i ús de la terra, que proporciona la base per l’alimentació local. Mitjançant un sistema d’enquestes sobre l’organització de les pràctiques agrícoles i, un treball de camp i de laboratori per caracteritzar els sòls de l’àrea, hem pogut classificar els sòls i atribuir condicions de fertilitat com d’adequació per determinades espècies de cultius. Posteriorment als anàlisi s’han pogut plantejar un seguit de propostes de millora tant per les pràctiques agrícoles com per les condicions químiques i físiques dels sòls

Avaluació de les emissions de gasos d’ efecte hivernacle a la ciutat de Girona i propostes de reeducació

En els últims 30 anys, la comunitat internacional ha anat agafant consciència dels efectes que pot tenir l’ increment de les emissions de gasos d’ efecte hivernacle (GEH). És per aquest motiu, entre d’ altres que es fan inventaris d’ emissions de GEH a nivell estatal i a gran escala. Aquest projecte té com a principal objectiu determinar i quantificar les emissions de GEH a escala local del municipi de Girona. Per tal de poder dur a terme aquest treball ha calgut buscar metodologies i softwares, que s’ han hagut d’ adaptar a la singularitat que té Girona, sobretot pel que fa al transport. Finalment es fan propostes que s’ adapten a la problemàtica del municipi

Premis Consell Social 2008

Helena Altabàs ha guanyat un dels Premis del Consell Social per un treball sobre l’aplicació de la PCR en la teràpia antiretroviral contra el VIH. El seu treball és una mica diferent, tant pels objectius marcats com per la metodologia emprada per progressar. Eudald Font va presentar Les dessaladores: solució o complement com a treball de recerca de batxillerat. Va arribar al tema d’una manera lògica, conscient com era de la necessitat d’estalviar aigua, un bé que sap que és escàs. Ester Manrique ha estat una de les guanyadores dels Premis del Consell Social amb un treball de recerca sobre la Coca-Cola. El nom de la beguda americana és un dels més coneguts al món, però això no fa que sapiguem gaires coses d’allò que contenen les ampolles

La Catalogació de la biblioteca del Seminari Menor de Girona

Fruit de les converses entre la Biblioteca del Semiari Diocesà i la Biblioteca de la Universitat de Girona, el 2006 es va signar un conveni de col·laboració per informatitzar la descripció dels gairebé vuitanta mil volums que integren el fons de la biblioteca del Seminari Menor, en el qual hi ha documents de gran valor per als investigadors. Si l'acord es va materialitzar va ser gràcies a l'impuls que hi van donar qui aleshores era president del Consell Social de la UdG, Salvador Carrera, i el bisbe de Girona, Carles Soler Perdigó, que van aconseguir el suport de la Fundació Caixa de Girona i també de la Diputació. La Generalitat de Catalunya s'hi va afegir en encarregar a la Biblioteca de Catalunya la catalogació del fons antic

Vol fer evident la persistència de la reflexió sobre el Risorgimento "traït", i ajudar a comprendre com hi havia un marc d’unitat política i institucional en el què no es donava cabuda a les diferències entre el Nord i el Sud d’Itàlia

Concretament, es redacta la declaració de principis de la política de l’empresa, s'estudia l’estat actual de l’entorn del golf mitjançant una Revisió Ambiental i es redacta el Pla de Gestió Ambiental
