Objective: The study compared the prevalence, correlates of functional impairment, and service utilization for eating disorders across Latinos, Asians, and African Americans living in the United States to non-Latino Whites. Method: Pooled data from the NIMH Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Studies (CPES; NIMH, 2007) were used. Results: The prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN) and binge-eating disorder (BED) were similar across all groups examined, but bulimia nervosa (BN) was more prevalent among Latinos and African Americans than non-Latino Whites. Despite similar prevalence of BED among ethnic groups examined, lifetime prevalence of any binge eating (ABE) was greater among each of the ethnic minority groups in comparison to non-Latino Whites. Lifetime prevalence of mental health service utilization was lower among ethnic minority groups studied than for non-Latino Whites for respondents with a lifetime history of any eating disorder. Discussion: These findings suggest the need for clinician training and health policy interventions to achieve optimal and equitable care for eating disorders across all ethnic groups in the United States. Objectives The present study investigates the hemodynamic and autonomic regulation during sleep-awake transitions and across different sleep cycles in patients with essential hypertension. Methods Nineteen individuals free of sleep apnea (10 normotensive and nine hypertensive matched for age, sex, and body mass index) underwent a standard polysomnography, with simultaneous electrocardiography and beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring (Portapres). All measurements were determined while awake (before and after sleep), as well as in the beginning and at end of the sleep cycle (first/last cycle of nonrapid and rapid eye movement stages). Results Systolic blood pressure was higher in hypertensives and exhibited a similar reduction to the normotensives ones in initial nonrapid eye movement sleep. This reduction was because of different mechanisms: a significant fall in cardiac output in normotensives, whereas in hypertensives was also dependent of a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance. Hypertensive patients presented lower heart rate variation and attenuated baroreflex sensitivity during sleep but not immediately before and after sleep. Spectral analysis suggested a higher sympathetic activity in the sleep stages in hypertension. Additionally, a progressive sympathetic predominance (final rapid eye movement> initial rapid eye movement and awake period postsleep> awake period presleep) was observed in both groups. Conclusion Hypertension is associated with depressed baroreflex sensitivity and increased sympathetic activation during sleep. The greater sympathetic predominance at the end of night (preceding the morning surge of sympathetic activity) could be implicated in the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Suppression of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during murine lactation causes progressive renal injury, indicating a physiological action of angiotensin II on nephrogenesis. The nuclear factor NF-kappa B system is one of the main intracellular mediators of angiotensin II. We investigated whether inhibition of this system with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) during rat nephrogenesis would lead to similar hypertension and renal injury as observed with RAS suppressors. Immediately after delivery, 32 Munich-Wistar dams, each nursing 6 male pups, were divided into 2 groups: C, untreated, and PDTC, receiving PDTC, 280 mg kg(-1) day(-1) orally, during 21 days. After weaning, the offspring were followed until 10 months of age without treatment. Adult rats that received neonatal PDTC exhibited stable hypertension and myocardial injury, without albuminuria. To gain additional insight into this process, the renal expression of RAS components and sodium transporters were determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) at 3 and 10 months of life. Renal renin and angiotensinogen were upregulated at 3 and downregulated at 10 months of age, suggesting a role for early local RAS activation. Likewise, there was early upregulation of the proximal sodium/glucose and sodium/bicarbonate transporters, which abated later in life, suggesting that additional factors sustained hypertension in the long run. The conclusions drawn from the findings were as follows: (1) an intact NF-jB system during nephrogenesis may be essential to normal renal and cardiovascular function in adult life; (2) neonatal PDTC represents a new model of hypertension, lacking overt structural injury or functional impairment of the kidneys; and (3) hypertension in this model seems associated with early temporary activation of renal RAS and sodium transporters. Chemokines comprise a structurally related family of cytokines that regulate leukocyte trafficking. Because infection with Toxoplasma gondii can induce an important inflammatory reaction that, if left uncontrolled, can lead to death, we investigated the role of the chemokine receptor CCR2 in T gondii infection. We orally infected CCR2(-/-) mice with five ME-49 T gondii cysts and monitored morbidity, survival, and immune response thereafter. The CCR2(-/-) mice displayed higher susceptibility to infection as all mice died on day 28 after infection. Despite similar Th1 responses, a more evident anti-inflammatory response was induced in the peripheral organs of CCR2(-/-) mice compared with wild-type C57BL/6 mice. Additionally, CCR2-/- mice presented greater parasitism and a milder inflammatory reaction in their peripheral organs with lesser CD4(+) and MAC-1(+) and greater CD8(+) cell migration. The parasite load decreased in these organs in CCR2(-/-) mice but remained uncontrolled in the central nervous system. Additionally, we observed down-regulated inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in peripheral organs from CCR2(-/-) mice that was associated with a small nitric oxide production by spleen macrophages. In conclusion, in the absence of CCR2, another mechanism is activated to control tissue parasitism in peripheral organs. Nevertheless, CCR2 is essential for the activation of microbicidal mediators that control T gondii replication in the central nervous system.

In the kallikrein-kinin and renin-angiotensin systems the main receptors, B-1 and B-2 (kinin receptors) and AT(1) and AT(2) (angiotensin receptors) respectively, are seven-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptors. Considering that the B, agonists Des-Arg(9)-BK (Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe), Lys-desArg(9)-BK or Des-Arg(10)-KD (Lys-Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe) and the AT, agonist (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-lle-His-Pro-Phe) have the same two residues at the C-terminal region (i.e. Pro-Phe), we hypothesized that TM V and TM VI of the B-1 receptor could play an essential role in agonist binding and activity, being these regions receptor sites for binding the C-terminal sequences of Des-Arg-kinins similarly to that observed to AT, receptor. To investigate this hypothesis, we replaced Arg(212) for Ala at the top of the TM V and the sequence 274-282 (CPYHFFAFL) in TM VI of the rat kinin B, receptor by the 32 receptor homologous sequence, 289-297 (FPFQISTFL) and subsequently analyzed the consequences of these mutations by competition binding and functional assays. Despite correct expression, observed at the mRNA and protein level by RT-PCR and confocal microscopy, respectively, no agonist binding and function was verified for the mutated receptors. Therefore, our results suggest an important role for Arg(212) in the TM V and a region of TM VI of rat B, receptor in the interaction with the C-terminal residues of Des-Arg-kinins, similar to that observed with AngII. It has been demonstrated that glutamine, a conditionally essential amino acid, improves nitrogen balance, acts as a stimulant of protein synthesis, and decreases proteolysis in myopathic children. In contrast, other studies have shown no beneficial effect of glutamine supplementation on burn victims or critically ill patients. Nonetheless, we hypothesized that glutamine supplementation would increase the fractional protein synthesis rate (FSR) in the jejunal mucosa of malnourished male Wistar rats. Thus, the objective of the present study was to test the effect of daily oral glutamine supplementation (0.42 g kg(-1) d(-1) for 14 days) on the FSR of the jejunal mucosa of healthy and malnourished rats. A 4-hour kinetic study with L-[1-(13)C]leucine was subsequently performed, and jejunal biopsies were obtained 1.5 cm from the Treitz angle and analyzed. Malnourished rats showed a 25% weight loss and increased urinary nitrogen excretion. Plasma amino acid concentration did not differ between groups. (13)C enrichment in plasma and jejunal cells was higher in the malnourished groups than in the healthy group. The FSR (percent per hour) was similar for the control and experimental groups (P > .05), with a mean range of 220%/h to 27%/h. Oral glutamine supplementation alone did not induce higher protein incorporation by the jejunal mucosa in malnourished rats, regardless of total food intake or the presence or absence of glutamine supplementation. Taking into account that atherosclerosis is a focal disease and high levels of plasma cholesterol are closely correlated with its pathogenesis, it is a challenge to explain how equal concentrations of cholesterol bathing the endothelium can produce local, rather than global, effects on arteries. The focal distribution of atherosclerotic lesions has been considered to be dependent, at least in part, on hydrodynamic factors. The present study was carried out to further test the hypothesis that these forces are an important localizing factor in rats feeding a hypercholesterolaemic diet and submitted to infra-diaphragmatic aortic constriction. These animals develop a normotensive prestenotic region with laminar blood flow that serves as control for a normotensive poststenotic region with turbulent blood flow. Our findings clearly demonstrated that the combination of turbulent blood flow and low wall shear stress (WSS) in the presence of hypercholesterolaemia and oxidative stress creates conditions to the formation of focally distributed incipient atherosclerotic lesions observed in the poststenotic segment. In contrast, only diffuse fatty streaks could be observed in the normotensive prestenotic segment with laminar blood flow and normal WSS in the presence of hypercholesterolaemia and oxidative stress. Although haemodynamic forces are not by themselves responsible for the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, they prime the local vascular wall in which the lesion develop. Further studies are required to establish how haemodynamic forces are detected and transduced into chemical signalling by the cells of the artery wall and then converted into pathophysiologically relevant phenotypic changes.

The essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis (EOET) has pharmacological activities but their effects on the gastrointestinal tract are yet unknown. It possesses alpha- and beta-pinene as minor constituents, isomers largely used as food or drink additives. In this work, we studied their actions on gut motility. After feeding with a liquid test meal, conscious rats received perorally EOET, alpha-, or beta-pinene, and the fractional dye retention was determined. EOET and its constituents decreased the gastric retention. In anesthetized rats, pinenes increased gastric tonus, while enhancing the meal progression in the small intestine of conscious rats. Both alpha- and beta-pinene contracted gastric strips in vitro but relaxed the duodenum. Conversely, EOET relaxed both the gastric and duodenal strips. In conclusion, EOET accelerates the gastric emptying of liquid, and part of its action is attributed to the contrasting effects induced by alpha- and beta-pinene on the gut.

GLUT is the major glucose transporter in mammalian cells. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at GLUT1 promoter and regulatory regions have been associated to the risk of developing nephropathy in different type 1 and type 2 diabetic populations. It has been demonstrated that differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies of GLUT1 gene (SLC2A1) polymorphisms occur among different populations. Therefore, ethnic differences in distribution of GLUT1 gene polymorphisms may be an important factor in determining gene-disease association. In this study, we investigated the XbaIG > T and HaeIIIT > C polymorphisms in six different Brazilian populations: 102 individuals from Salvador population (Northern Brazil), 56 European descendants from Joinville (South Brazil), 85 Indians from Tiryi tribe (North Brazil) and 127 samples from Southern Brazil: 44 from European descendants, 42 from African descendants and 41 from Japanese descendants. Genotype frequencies from both sites did not differ significantly from those expected under the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We verified that the allele frequencies of both polymorphisms were heterogeneous in these six Brazilian ethnic groups.

Like previous volumes in the Educational Innovation in Economics and Business Series, this book is genuinely international in terms of its coverage. With contributions from nine different countries and three continents, it reflects a global interest in, and commitment to, innovation in business education, with a view to enhancing the learning experience of both undergraduates and postgraduates. It should prove of value to anyone engaged directly in business education, defined broadly to embrace management, finance, marketing, economics, informational studies, and ethics, or who has responsibility for fostering the professional development of business educators. The contributions have been selected with the objective of encouraging and inspiring others as well as illustrating developments in the sphere of business education. It describes strategies for breaking boundaries for global learning.
