Electric probes are objects immersed in the plasma with sharp boundaries which collect of emit charged particles. Consequently, the nearby plasma evolves under abrupt imposed and/or naturally emerging conditions. There could be localized currents, different time scales for plasma species evolution, charge separation and absorbing-emitting walls. The traditional numerical schemes based on differences often transform these disparate boundary conditions into computational singularities. This is the case of models using advection-diffusion differential equations with source-sink terms (also called Fokker-Planck equations). These equations are used in both, fluid and kinetic descriptions, to obtain the distribution functions or the density for each plasma species close to the boundaries. We present a resolution method grounded on an integral advancing scheme by using approximate Green's functions, also called short-time propagators. All the integrals, as a path integration process, are numerically calculated, what states a robust grid-free computational integral method, which is unconditionally stable for any time step. Hence, the sharp boundary conditions, as the current emission from a wall, can be treated during the short-time regime providing solutions that works as if they were known for each time step analytically. The form of the propagator (typically a multivariate Gaussian) is not unique and it can be adjusted during the advancing scheme to preserve the conserved quantities of the problem. The effects of the electric or magnetic fields can be incorporated into the iterative algorithm. The method allows smooth transitions of the evolving solutions even when abrupt discontinuities are present. In this work it is proposed a procedure to incorporate, for the very first time, the boundary conditions in the numerical integral scheme. This numerical scheme is applied to model the plasma bulk interaction with a charge-emitting electrode, dealing with fluid diffusion equations combined with Poisson equation self-consistently. It has been checked the stability of this computational method under any number of iterations, even for advancing in time electrons and ions having different time scales. This work establishes the basis to deal in future work with problems related to plasma thrusters or emissive probes in electromagnetic fields.

El objetivo de esta Tesis es presentar un método eficiente para la evaluación de sistemas multi-cuerpo con elementos flexibles con pequeñas deformaciones, basado en métodos topológicos para la simulación de sistemas tan complejos como los que se utilizan en la práctica y en tiempo real o próximo al real. Se ha puesto un especial énfasis en la resolución eficiente de aquellos aspectos que conllevan mayor coste computacional, tales como la evaluación de las ecuaciones dinámicas y el cálculo de los términos de inercia. Las ecuaciones dinámicas se establecen en función de las variables independientes del sistema, y la integración de las mismas se realiza mediante formulaciones implícitas de index-3. Esta Tesis se articula en seis Capítulos. En el Capítulo 1 se realiza una revisión bibliográfica de la simulación de sistemas flexibles y los métodos más relevantes de integración de las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento. Asimismo, se presentan los objetivos de esta Tesis. En el Capítulo 2 se presenta un método semi-recursivo para la evaluación de las ecuaciones de los sistemas multi-cuerpo con elementos flexibles basado en formulaciones topológicas y síntesis modal. Esta Tesis determina la posición de cada punto del cuerpo flexible en función de un sistema de referencia flotante que se mueve con dicho cuerpo y de las amplitudes de ciertos modos de deformación calculados a partir de un mallado obtenido mediante el Método de Elementos Finitos. Se presta especial atención en las condiciones de contorno que se han de tener en cuenta a la hora de establecer las variables que definen la deformación del cuerpo flexible. El Capítulo 3 se centra en la evaluación de los términos de inercia de los sistemas flexibles que generalmente conllevan un alto coste computacional. Se presenta un método que permite el cálculo de dichos términos basado en el uso de 24 matrices constantes que pueden ser calculadas previamente al proceso de integración. Estas matrices permiten evaluar la matriz de masas y el vector de fuerzas de inercia dependientes de la velocidad sin que sea necesario evaluar la posición deformada de todos los puntos del cuerpo flexible. Se realiza un análisis pormenorizado de dichas matrices con el objetivo de optimizar su cálculo estableciendo aproximaciones que permitan reducir el número de dichos términos y optimizar aún más su evaluación. Se analizan dos posibles simplificaciones: la primera utiliza una discretización no-consistente basada en elementos finitos en los que se definen únicamente los desplazamientos axiales de los nodos; en la segunda propuesta se hace uso de una matriz de masas concentradas (Lumped Mass). Basándose en la formulación presentada, el Capítulo 4 aborda la integración eficiente de las ecuaciones dinámicas. Se presenta un método iterativo para la integración con fórmulas de index-3 basado en la proyección de las ecuaciones dinámicas según las variables independientes del sistema multi-cuerpo. El cálculo del residuo del sistema de ecuaciones no lineales que se ha de resolver de modo iterativo se realiza mediante un proceso recursivo muy eficiente que aprovecha la estructura topológica del sistema. Se analizan tres formas de evaluar la matriz tangente del citado sistema no lineal: evaluación aproximada, numérica y recursiva. El método de integración presentado permite el uso de distintas fórmulas. En esta Tesis se analizan la Regla Trapezoidal, la fórmula BDF de segundo orden y un método híbrido TR-BDF2. Para este último caso se presenta un algoritmo de paso variable. En el Capítulo 5 plantea la implementación del método propuesto en un programa general de simulación de mecanismos que permita la resolución de cualquier sistema multi-cuerpo definiéndolo mediante un fichero de datos. La implementación de este programa se ha realizado tanto en C++ como en Java. Se muestran los resultados de las formulaciones presentadas en esta Tesis mediante la simulación de cuatro ejemplos de distinta complejidad. Mediante análisis concretos se comparan la formulación presentada con otras existentes. También se analiza el efecto del lenguaje de programación utilizado en la implementación y los efectos de las posibles simplificaciones planteadas. Por último, el Capítulo 6 resume las principales conclusiones alcanzadas en la Tesis y las futuras líneas de investigación que con ella se abren. ABSTRACT This Thesis presents an efficient method for solving the forward dynamics of a multi-body sys-tem formed by rigid and flexible bodies with small strains for real-time simulation of real-life models. It is based on topological formulations. The presented work focuses on the efficient solution of the most time-consuming tasks of the simulation process, such as the numerical integration of the motion differential equations and in particular the evaluation of the inertia terms corresponding to the flexible bodies. The dynamic equations are formulated in terms of independent variables of the muti-body system, and they are integrated by means of implicit index-3 formulae. The Thesis is arranged in six chapters. Chapter 1 presents a review of the most relevant and recent contributions related to the modelization of flexible multi-body systems and the integration of the corresponding dynamic equations. The main objectives of the Thesis are also presented in detail. Chapter 2 presents a semi-recursive method for solving the equations of a multi-body system with flexible bodies based on topological formulations and modal synthesis. This Thesis uses the floating frame approach and the modal amplitudes to define the position of any point at the flexible body. These modal deformed shapes are obtained by means of the Finite Element Method. Particular attention has been taken to the boundary conditions used to define the deformation of the flexible bodies. Chapter 3 focuses on the evaluation of the inertia terms, which is usually a very time-consuming task. A new method based on the use of 24 constant matrices is presented. These matrices are evaluated during the set-up step, before the integration process. They allow the calculation of the inertia terms in terms of the position and orientation of the local coordinate system and the deformation variables, and there is no need to evaluate the position and velocities of all the nodes of the FEM mesh. A deep analysis of the inertia terms is performed in order to optimize the evaluation process, reducing both the terms used and the number of arithmetic operations. Two possible simplifications are presented: the first one uses a non-consistent approach in order to define the inertia terms respect to the Cartesian coordinates of the FEM mesh, rejecting those corresponding to the angular rotations; the second approach makes use of lumped mass matrices. Based on the previously presented formulation, Chapter 4 is focused on the numerical integration of the motion differential equations. A new predictor-corrector method based on index-3 formulae and on the use of multi-body independent variables is presented. The evaluation of the dynamic equations in a new time step needs the solution of a set on nonlinear equations by a Newton-Raphson iterative process. The computation of the corresponding residual vector is performed efficiently by taking advantage of the system’s topological structure. Three methods to compute the tangent matrix are presented: an approximated evaluation that considers only the most relevant terms, a numerical approach based on finite differences and a recursive method that uses the topological structure. The method presented for integrating the dynamic equations can use a variety of integration formulae. This Thesis analyses the use of the trapezoidal rule, the 2nd order BDF formula and the hybrid TR-BDF2 method. A variable-time step strategy is presented for the last one. Chapter 5 describes the implementation of the proposed method in a general purpose pro-gram for solving any multibody defined by a data file. This program is implemented both in C++ and Java. Four examples are used to check the validity of the formulation and to compare this method with other methods commonly used to solve the dynamic equations of multi-body systems containing flexible bodies. The efficiency of the programming methodology used and the effect of the possible simplifications proposed are also analyzed. Chapter 6 summarizes the main Conclusions obtained in this Thesis and the new lines of research that have been opened.

This dataset contains continuous time series of land surface temperature (LST) at spatial resolution of 300m around the 12 experimental sites of the PAGE21 project (grant agreement number 282700, funded by the EC seventh Framework Program theme FP7-ENV-2011). This dataset was produced from hourly LST time series at 25km scale, retrieved from SSM/I data (André et al., 2015, doi:10.1016/j.rse.2015.01.028) and downscaled to 300m using a dynamic model and a particle smoothing approach. This methodology is based on two main assumptions. First, LST spatial variability is mostly explained by land cover and soil hydric state. Second, LST is unique for a land cover class within the low resolution pixel. Given these hypotheses, this variable can be estimated using a land cover map and a physically based land surface model constrained with observations using a data assimilation process. This methodology described in Mechri et al. (2014, doi:10.1002/2013JD020354) was applied to the ORCHIDEE land surface model (Krinner et al., 2005, doi:10.1029/2003GB002199) to estimate prior values of each land cover class provided by the ESA CCI-Land Cover product (Bontemps et al., 2013) at 300m resolution . The assimilation process (particle smoother) consists in simulating ensemble of LST time series for each land cover class and for a large number of parameter sets. For each parameter set, the resulting temperatures are aggregated considering the grid fraction of each land cover and compared to the coarse observations. Miniminizing the distance between the aggregated model solutions and the observations allow us to select the simulated LST and the corresponding parameter sets which fit the observations most closely. The retained parameter sets are then duplicated and randomly perturbed before simulating the next time window. At the end, the most likely LST of each land cover class are estimated and used to reconstruct LST maps at 300m resolution using ESA CCI-Land Cover. The resulting temperature maps on which ice pixels were masked, are provided at daily time step during the nine-year analysis period (2000-2009).

Modelling and optimization of the power draw of large SAG/AG mills is important due to the large power draw which modern mills require (5-10 MW). The cost of grinding is the single biggest cost within the entire process of mineral extraction. Traditionally, modelling of the mill power draw has been done using empirical models. Although these models are reliable, they cannot model mills and operating conditions which are not within the model database boundaries. Also, due to its static nature, the impact of the changing conditions within the mill on the power draw cannot be determined using such models. Despite advances in computing power, discrete element method (DEM) modelling of large mills with many thousands of particles could be a time consuming task. The speed of computation is determined principally by two parameters: number of particles involved and material properties. The computational time step is determined by the size of the smallest particle present in the model and material properties (stiffness). In the case of small particles, the computational time step will be short, whilst in the case of large particles; the computation time step will be larger. Hence, from the point of view of time required for modelling (which usually corresponds to time required for 3-4 mill revolutions), it will be advantageous that the smallest particles in the model are not unnecessarily too small. The objective of this work is to compare the net power draw of the mill whose charge is characterised by different size distributions, while preserving the constant mass of the charge and mill speed. The aim of this study was to conduct a number of controlled digestions to obtain easily comparable cellulose solubilisation rates and to compare these rates to those found in the literature to see which operational differences were significant in affecting cellulose degradation during anaerobic digestion. The results suggested that differences in volumetric cellulose solubilisation rates were not indicative of the true performance of cellulose digestion systems. When cellulose solubilisation rates were normalised by the mass of cellulose in the reactor at each time step, the comparison of the rates became more meaningful. Cellulose solubilisation was surface area limited. Therefore, changes in the loading rate of cellulose to the reactor altered the volumetric solubilisation rate without changing the mass normalised rate. Comparison of mass normalised solubilisation rates from this study and the literature demonstrated that differences in reactor configuration and operational conditions did not significantly impact on the solubilisation rate whereas the difference in composition of the microbial communities showed a marked effect. We present AUSLEM (AUStralian Land Erodibility Model), a land erodibility modelling system that utilizes a rule-set of surficial and climatic thresholds applied through a Geographic Information System (GIs) modelling framework to predict landscape susceptibility to wind erosion. AUSLEM is distinctive in that it quantitatively assesses landscape susceptibility to wind erosion at a 5 x 5 km. spatial resolution on a monthly time-step across Australia. The system was implemented for representative wet (1984), dry (1994), and average rainfall (1997) years with corresponding low, high and moderate dust storm day frequencies. Results demonstrate that AUSLEM can identify landscape erodibility, and provide an interpretation of the physical nature and distribution of erodible landscapes in Australia. Further, results offer an assessment of the dynamic tendencies of erodibility in space and time in response to the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and seasonal synoptic scale climate variability. A comparative analysis of AUSLEM output with independent national and international wind erosion, atmospheric aerosol and dust event records indicates a high level of model competency. The particle-based lattice solid model developed to study the physics of rocks and the nonlinear dynamics of earthquakes is refined by incorporating intrinsic friction between particles. The model provides a means for studying the causes of seismic wave attenuation, as well as frictional heat generation, fault zone evolution, and localisation phenomena. A modified velocity-Verlat scheme that allows friction to be precisely modelled is developed. This is a difficult computational problem given that a discontinuity must be accurately simulated by the numerical approach (i.e., the transition from static to dynamical frictional behaviour). This is achieved using a half time step integration scheme. At each half time step, a nonlinear system is solved to compute the static frictional forces and states of touching particle-pairs. Improved efficiency is achieved by adaptively adjusting the time step increment, depending on the particle velocities in the system. The total energy is calculated and verified to remain constant to a high precision during simulations. Numerical experiments show that the model can be applied to the study of earthquake dynamics, the stick-slip instability, heat generation, and fault zone evolution. Such experiments may lead to a conclusive resolution of the heat flow paradox and improved understanding of earthquake precursory phenomena and dynamics. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

The dynamics of supervised learning in layered neural networks were studied in the regime where the size of the training set is proportional to the number of inputs. The evolution of macroscopic observables, including the two relevant performance measures can be predicted by using the dynamical replica theory. Three approximation schemes aimed at eliminating the need to solve a functional saddle-point equation at each time step have been derived.

Multi-agent algorithms inspired by the division of labour in social insects are applied to a problem of distributed mail retrieval in which agents must visit mail producing cities and choose between mail types under certain constraints.The efficiency (i.e. the average amount of mail retrieved per time step), and the flexibility (i.e. the capability of the agents to react to changes in the environment) are investigated both in static and dynamic environments. New rules for mail selection and specialisation are introduced and are shown to exhibit improved efficiency and flexibility compared to existing ones. We employ a genetic algorithm which allows the various rules to evolve and compete. Apart from obtaining optimised parameters for the various rules for any environment, we also observe extinction and speciation. From a more theoretical point of view, in order to avoid finite size effects, most results are obtained for large population sizes. However, we do analyse the influence of population size on the performance. Furthermore, we critically analyse the causes of efficiency loss, derive the exact dynamics of the model in the large system limit under certain conditions, derive theoretical upper bounds for the efficiency, and compare these with the experimental results.

This preliminary report describes work carried out as part of work package 1.2 of the MUCM research project. The report is split in two parts: the ?rst part (Sections 1 and 2) summarises the state of the art in emulation of computer models, while the second presents some initial work on the emulation of dynamic models. In the ?rst part, we describe the basics of emulation, introduce the notation and put together the key results for the emulation of models with single and multiple outputs, with or without the use of mean function. In the second part, we present preliminary results on the chaotic Lorenz 63 model. We look at emulation of a single time step, and repeated application of the emulator for sequential predic- tion. After some design considerations, the emulator is compared with the exact simulator on a number of runs to assess its performance. Several general issues related to emulating dynamic models are raised and discussed. Current work on the larger Lorenz 96 model (40 variables) is presented in the context of dimension reduction, with results to be provided in a follow-up report. The notation used in this report are summarised in appendix.

We investigate the sensitivity of a Markov model with states and transition probabilities obtained from clustering a molecular dynamics trajectory. We have examined a 500 ns molecular dynamics trajectory of the peptide valine-proline-alanine-leucine in explicit water. The sensitivity is quantified by varying the boundaries of the clusters and investigating the resulting variation in transition probabilities and the average transition time between states. In this way, we represent the effect of clustering using different clustering algorithms. It is found that in terms of the investigated quantities, the peptide dynamics described by the Markov model is sensitive to the clustering; in particular, the average transition times are found to vary up to 46%. Moreover, inclusion of nonphysical sparsely populated clusters can lead to serious errors of up to 814%. In the investigation, the time step used in the transition matrix is determined by the minimum time scale on which the system behaves approximately Markovian. This time step is found to be about 100 ps. It is concluded that the description of peptide dynamics with transition matrices should be performed with care, and that using standard clustering algorithms to obtain states and transition probabilities may not always produce reliable results.

Investigations into the modelling techniques that depict the transport of discrete phases (gas bubbles or solid particles) and model biochemical reactions in a bubble column reactor are discussed here. The mixture model was used to calculate gas-liquid, solid-liquid and gasliquid-solid interactions. Multiphase flow is a difficult phenomenon to capture, particularly in bubble columns where the major driving force is caused by the injection of gas bubbles. The gas bubbles cause a large density difference to occur that results in transient multi-dimensional fluid motion. Standard design procedures do not account for the transient motion, due to the simplifying assumptions of steady plug flow. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can assist in expanding the understanding of complex flows in bubble columns by characterising the flow phenomena for many geometrical configurations. Therefore, CFD has a role in the education of chemical and biochemical engineers, providing the examples of flow phenomena that many engineers may not experience, even through experimentation. The performance of the mixture model was investigated for three domains (plane, rectangular and cylindrical) and three flow models (laminar, k-e turbulence and the Reynolds stresses). mThis investigation raised many questions about how gas-liquid interactions are captured numerically. To answer some of these questions the analogy between thermal convection in a cavity and gas-liquid flow in bubble columns was invoked. This involved modelling the buoyant motion of air in a narrow cavity for a number of turbulence schemes. The difference in density was caused by a temperature gradient that acted across the width of the cavity. Multiple vortices were obtained when the Reynolds stresses were utilised with the addition of a basic flow profile after each time step. To implement the three-phase models an alternative mixture model was developed and compared against a commercially available mixture model for three turbulence schemes. The scheme where just the Reynolds stresses model was employed, predicted the transient motion of the fluids quite well for both mixture models. Solid-liquid and then alternative formulations of gas-liquid-solid model were compared against one another. The alternative form of the mixture model was found to perform particularly well for both gas and solid phase transport when calculating two and three-phase flow. The improvement in the solutions obtained was a result of the inclusion of the Reynolds stresses model and differences in the mixture models employed. The differences between the alternative mixture models were found in the volume fraction equation (flux and deviatoric stress tensor terms) and the viscosity formulation for the mixture phase.

The research concerns the development and application of an analytical computer program, SAFE-ROC, that models material behaviour and structural behaviour of a slender reinforced concrete column that is part of an overall structure and is subjected to elevated temperatures as a result of exposure to fire. The analysis approach used in SAFE-RCC is non-linear. Computer calculations are used that take account of restraint and continuity, and the interaction of the column with the surrounding structure during the fire. Within a given time step an iterative approach is used to find a deformed shape for the column which results in equilibrium between the forces associated with the external loads and internal stresses and degradation. Non-linear geometric effects are taken into account by updating the geometry of the structure during deformation. The structural response program SAFE-ROC includes a total strain model which takes account of the compatibility of strain due to temperature and loading. The total strain model represents a constitutive law that governs the material behaviour for concrete and steel. The material behaviour models employed for concrete and steel take account of the dimensional changes caused by the temperature differentials and changes in the material mechanical properties with changes in temperature. Non-linear stress-strain laws are used that take account of loading to a strain greater than that corresponding to the peak stress of the concrete stress-strain relation, and model the inelastic deformation associated with unloading of the steel stress-strain relation. The cross section temperatures caused by the fire environment are obtained by a preceding non-linear thermal analysis, a computer program FIRES-T.

Prior to the development of a production standard control system for ML Aviation's plan-symmetric remotely piloted helicopter system, SPRITE, optimum solutions to technical requirements had yet to be found for some aspects of the work. This thesis describes an industrial project where solutions to real problems have been provided within strict timescale constraints. Use has been made of published material wherever appropriate, new solutions have been contributed where none existed previously. A lack of clearly defined user requirements from potential Remotely Piloted Air Vehicle (RPAV) system users is identified, A simulation package is defined to enable the RPAV designer to progress with air vehicle and control system design, development and evaluation studies and to assist the user to investigate his applications. The theoretical basis of this simulation package is developed including Co-axial Contra-rotating Twin Rotor (CCTR), six degrees of freedom motion, fuselage aerodynamics and sensor and control system models. A compatible system of equations is derived for modelling a miniature plan-symmetric helicopter. Rigorous searches revealed a lack of CCTR models, based on closed form expressions to obviate integration along the rotor blade, for stabilisation and navigation studies through simulation. An economic CCTR simulation model is developed and validated by comparison with published work and practical tests. Confusion in published work between attitude and Euler angles is clarified. The merits of various numerical methods for the solution of the one and two dimensional heat conduction equation with a radiation boundary condition have been examined from a practical standpoint in order to determine accuracies and efficiencies. It is found that the use of five increments to approximate the space derivatives gives sufficiently accurate results provided the time step is not too large; further, the implicit backward difference method of Liebmann (27) is found to be the most accurate method. On this basis, a new implicit method is proposed for the solution of the three-dimensional heat conduction equation with radiation boundary conditions. The accuracies of the integral and analogue computer methods are also investigated.
