The novel polyetherethersulfone (PES-C) prepared from phenol-phthalein in our institute is an amorphous, rigid, tough material with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. To improve its water vapor permeability for the application of gas drying, the PES-C was sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and transferred in sodium, cupric, and ferric salt forms. The sulfonation degree can be regulated by controlling the temperature and reaction time. Characterization of sulfonated PES-C in sodium form was made by IR. Some properties of the sulfonated PES-C, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and transport properties to nitrogen and water vapor have also been discussed. A molybdophosphate anion modified electrode has been prepared in 2 M sulfuric acid solution containing PMo12O403- by electrochemical cycling scan or simple adsorption on a glassy carbon electrode anodized before modification. The film electrode obtained is very stable upon potential cycling in acid solution. The catalytic effect of the film for reduction of bromate was investigated in detail.

Three couples of reversible redox waves of the SiW12O404- anion which are composed of two one-electron and one two-electron processes occur in the potential range +0.1 to -0.7 V in aqueous solutions. The first (most positive) and third (most negative) redox waves exhibit good electrocatalytic activities for nitrite reduction in acid solutions with pH < 2 for the former and with pH similar or equal to 4 for the latter. The behavior of the third catalytic wave, which is quite unusual, was studied in detail. The rate constant governing the reduction of NO2- by the first wave of SiW12O404- was measured by an ultramicrodisk electrode as 3.73 x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1).

Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) were prepared by adsorbing different dyes, including methylene blue (MB), toluidine blue (TB) and brilliant cresyl blue (BCB), onto glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) with anodic pretreatment. The electrochemical reactions of adsorbed dyes are fairly reversible at low coverages. The CMEs are more stable in acid solutions than in alkaline ones, which is mainly due to decomposition of the dyes in the latter media. They exhibit an excellent catalytic ability for the oxidation of nicotinamide coenzymes (NADH and NADPH). The formation of a charge transfer complex between the coenzyme and the adsorbed mediator has been demonstrated using a rotating disk electrode. The charge transfer complex decomposition is a slow step in the overall electrode reaction process. Some kinetic parameters are estimated. Dependence of the electrocatalytic activity of the CMEs on the solution pH is discussed.

The catalytic activity of heteropoly compounds in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and cyclohexa nol under phase transfer conditions has been studied. The catalytic activity of six kinds of heteropoly acids with Keggin structure will drop by the order of GeMo12 (H4GeMo12O40). PW12, PMo12, SiMo12, GeW12 and SiW12. When the three protons of H3PW12O40 Were replaced by Na+ step by step, the catalytic activity will raise gradually with the drop of acidity. The addition of base and trace amount of sulfuric acid to the reaction system resulted in an increase of catalytic activity. It was found that catalytic activity of mono-lacunary heteropoly compounds is higher than that of the primary heteropoly acids (or salts). The catalytic oxidation system of HPA-H2O2-PTC is very active in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol ana cyclohexanol, but it has little activity in the oxidation of inactive compounds such as n(or iso)-proplalcohol. n-butyl alcohol and n-hexanol. Solvent has great effect on reaction, when polar compounds such as water were used as solvent, the catalytic activity is better than that when non-polar compounds were used as solvent.

The condensation and sulfonation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) and FA with tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) and the crosslinking product structures were studied by means of solid-state C-13 NMR. The reaction of formalin with FA linear oligomer terminated by 2-methyl furan took place in the presence of the phase transfer catalyst (C4H9)4N+I-. The reaction of the terminated oligomer with a large amount of sulfuric acid as well as the former reaction was examined. The effects of some main reaction conditions on the crosslinking condensation and sulfonation were also discussed.

Four research methods, such as weight loss test, electrochemical techniques, adsorption isotherm, and quantum chemical calculation, were employed in this paper to study the inhibition efficiency (IE) and inhibition mechanism of three 2H-pyrazole-triazole derivatives, BHOT, FHOT, and CHOT in 1 M HCl solution for mild steel. Using the electrochemical technique, three inhibitors were proved to show a mixed-type character for mild steel by suppressing both anodic and cathodic reactions on the steel surface. The adsorption models of three compounds were established at different temperatures according to their adsorption isotherms. The results of the quantum chemical calculation method indicated that the adsorption sites of 2H-pyrazole-triazole derivatives were strongly centralized on benzene ring, triazole ring, or other substituents. All the results showed that the three derivatives were excellent inhibitors in I M HCl solution for mild steel.

Berberine was abstracted from coptis chinensis and its inhibition efficiency on corrosion of mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 was investigated through weight loss experiment, electrochemical techniques and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) with energy disperse spectrometer (EDS). The weight loss results showed that berbefine is an excellent corrosion inhibitor for mild steel immersed in 1M H2SO4. Potentiodynamic curves suggested that berbefine suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes for its concentrations higher than 1.0 x 10(-4) M and mainly cathodic reaction was suppressed for lower concentrations. The Nyquist diagrams of impedance for mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 containing berbefine with different concentrations showed one capacitive loop, and the polarization resistance increased with the inhibitor concentration rising. A good fit to Flory-Huggins isotherm was obtained between surface coverage degree and inhibitor concentration. The surface morphology and EDS analysis for mild steel specimens in sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of the inhibitor also proved the results obtained by the weight loss and electrochemical experiments. The correlation of inhibition effect and molecular structure of berberine was then discussed by quantum chemistry study. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The purines and its derivatives, such as, guanine, adenine, 2,6-diaminopurine, 6-thioguanine and 2,6-dithiopurine, were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M HCl solution by weight loss measurements, electrochemical tests and quantum chemical calculations. The polarization curves of mild steel in the hydrochloric acid solutions of the purines showed that both cathodic and anodic processes of steel corrosion were suppressed. The Nyquist plots of impedance expressed mainly as a depressed capacitive loop with different compounds and concentrations. For all these purines, the inhibition efficiency increased by increasing the inhibitor concentration, and the inhibition efficiency orders are 2,6-dithiopurine > 6-thioguanine > 2,6-diaminopurine > adenine > guanine with the highest inhibiting efficiency of 88.0% for 10(-3) M 2,6-dithiopurine. The optimized structures of purines, the Mulliken charges, molecular orbital densities and relevant parameters were calculated by quantum chemical calculations. The quantum chemical calculation results inferred that the adsorption belong to physical adsorption, which might arise from the pi stacking between the pi electron of the purines and the metal surface. Carbon supported PtSn alloy and PtSnOx particles with nominal Pt:Sn ratios of 3:1 were prepared by a modified polyol method. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray microchemical analysis were used to characterize the composition, size, distribution, and morphology of PtSn particles. The particles are predominantly single nanocrystals with diameters in the order of 2.0-3.0 nm. According to the XRD results, the lattice constant of Pt in the PtSn alloy is dilated due to Sn atoms penetrating into the Pt crystalline lattice. While for PtSnOx nanoparticles, the lattice constant of Pt only changed a little. HRTEM micrograph of PtSnOx clearly shows that the change of the spacing of Pt (111) plane is neglectable, meanwhile, SnO2 nanoparticles, characterized with the nominal 0.264 nm spacing of SnO2 (10 1) plane, were found in the vicinity of Pt particles. In contrast, the HRTEM micrograph of PtSn alloy shows that the spacing of Pt (111) plane extends to 0.234 nm from the original 0.226 nm. High resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HR-EDS) analyses show that all investigated particles in the two PtSn catalysts represent uniform Pt/Sn compositions very close to the nominal one. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) in sulfuric acid show that the hydrogen ad/desorption was inhibited on the surface of PtSn alloy compared to that on the surface of the PtSnOx catalyst. PtSnOx catalyst showed higher catalytic activity for ethanol electro-oxidation than PtSn alloy from the results of chronoamperometry (CA) analysis and the performance of direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). It is deduced that the unchanged lattice parameter of Pt in the PtSnOx catalyst is favorable to ethanol adsorption and meanwhile, tin oxide in the vicinity of Pt nanoparticles could offer oxygen species conveniently to remove the CO-like species of ethanolic residues to free Pt active sites. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.Calcarenites are highly porous soft rocks formed of mainly carbonate grains bonded together by calcite bridges. The above characteristics make them prone to water-induced weathering, frequently featuring large caverns and inland natural underground cavities. This study is aimed to determine the main physical processes at the base of the short- and long-term weakening experienced by these rocks when interacting with water. We present the results of microscale experimental investigations performed on calcarenites from four different sites in Southern Italy. SEM, thin sections, X-ray CT observations and related analyses are used for both the interpretation-definition of the structure changes, and the identification-quantification of the degradation mechanisms. Two distinct types of bonding have been identified within the rock: temporary bonding (TB) and persistent bonding (PB). The diverse mechanisms linked to these two types of bonding explain both the observed fast decrease in rock strength when water fills the pores (short-term effect of water), identified with a short-term debonding (STD), and a long-term weakening of the material, when the latter is persistently kept in water-saturated conditions (long-term effect of water), identified with a long-term debonding (LTD). To highlight the micro-hydro-chemo-mechanical processes of formation and annihilation of the TB bonds and their role in the evolution of the mechanical strength of the material, mechanical tests on samples prepared by drying partially saturated calcarenite powder, or a mix of glass ballotini and calcarenite powder were conducted. The long-term debonding processes have also been investigated, using acid solutions in order to accelerate the reaction rates. This paper attempts to identify and quantify differences between the two types of bonds and the relative micro-scale debonding processes leading to the macro-scale material weakening mechanisms.

The efficient remediation of heavy metal-bearing sediment has been one of top priorities of ecosystem protection. Cement-based solidification/stabilization (s/s) is an option for reducing the mobility of heavy metals in the sediment and the subsequent hazard for human beings and animals. This work uses sodium carbonate as an internal carbon source of accelerated carbonation and gaseous CO2 as an external carbon source to overcome deleterious effects of heavy metals on strength development and improve the effectiveness of s/s of heavy metal-bearing sediment. In addition to the compressive strength and porosity measurements, leaching tests followed the Chinese solid waste extraction procedure for leaching toxicity - sulfuric acid and nitric acid method (HJ/T299-2007), German leaching procedure (DIN38414-S4) and US toxicity characteristic leaching procedures (TCLP) have been conducted. The experimental results indicated that the solidified sediment by accelerated carbonation was capable of reaching all performance criteria for the disposal at a Portland cement dosage of 10 wt.% and a solid/water ratio of 1: 1. The concentrations of mercury and other heavy metals in the leachates were below 0.10 mg/L and 5 mg/L, respectively, complying with Chinese regulatory level (GB5085-2007). Compared to the hydration, accelerated carbonation improved the compressive strength of the solidified sediment by more than 100% and reduced leaching concentrations of heavy metals significantly. It is considered that accelerated carbonation technology with a combination of Na2CO3 and CO2 may practically apply to cement-based s/s of heavy metal-bearing sediment. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
