A flow injection spectrophotometric system is proposed for phosphite determination in fertilizers by the molybdenum blue method after the processing of each sample two times on-line without and with an oxidizing step. The flow system was designed to add sulfuric acid or permanganate solutions alternately into the system by simply displacing the injector-commutator from one resting position to another, allowing the determination of phosphate and total phosphate, respectively. The concentration of phosphite is obtained then by difference between the two measurents. The influence of flow rates, sample volume, and dimension of flow line connecting the injector-commutator to the main analytical channel was evaluated. The proposed method was applied to phosphite determination in commercial liquid fertilizers. Results obtained with the proposed FIA system were not statistically different from those obtained by titrimetry at the 95% confidence level. In addition, recoveries within 94 and 100% of spiked fertilizers were found. The relative standard deviation (n = 12) related to the phosphite-converted-phosphate peak alone was <= 3.5% for 800 mg L-1 P (phoshite) solution. Precision due to the differences of total phosphate and phosphate was 1.1% for 10 mg L-1 P (phosphate) + 3000 mg L-1 P (phosphite) solution. The sampling rate was calculated as 15 determinations per hour, and the reagent consumption was about 6.3 mg of KMnO4, 200 mg of (NH4)(6)Mo7O24 center dot 4H(2)O, and 40 mg of ascorbic acid per measurement.

The widespread falsification and/or adulteration of commercially available pharmaceutical preparations call for reliable methods of drug identification, preferably through selective and rapid sorting color tests that could be undertaken with minimum equipment remote from laboratory facilities. The present work deals with a convenient adaptation and refinement of a spot test devised by Feigl (1966) for urotropine, based on the hydrolytic cleavage of that substance in the presence of sulfuric acid, splitting out formaldehyde which is identified by its color reaction with chromotropic acid. A simple emergency kit was developed for the quick, efficient, inexpensive and easy performance of urotropine tests by semiskilled personnel even in the drugstore laboratory (or office) as well as in a mobile screening operation. It is shown that when the reagents are added according to the recommended sequence a self-heating system is generated, increasing substantially the reactions' rates and the test sensitivity as well. The identification limit found was 25 mug of urotropine, for both solid and liquid samples. The possible interference of 84 substances/materials was investigated. Interference was noted only for methylene blue, acriflavine, Ponceau Red, Bordeaux Red (these dyes are often included in urotropine dosage forms), pyramidone, dipyrone, quinine and tetracycline. A simple procedure for removing most of the interferences is described. Data for 8 commercial dosage forms and results obtained from their analysis are presented.

A bacterial leaching program was carried out in order to evaluate the potential of applying this process to leach uranium from the ore of Figueira-PR, Brazil. The experiments were carried out in shake flasks, column percolation (laboratory and semipilot scale) and in heap leaching. In shake flasks and in column percolation experiments at laboratory scale, bacterial activity on the ore was confirmed: approximately 60% of uranium was leached, against around 30% in sterilized controls. Column percolation experiments at semipilot scale and heap leaching (850 tons of ore) showed uranium extractions of approximately 50%. In both experiments, a complementary sulfuric acid attack, after the bacterial leaching phase, was necessary to reach this level of uranium extraction.

The tendency of the aircraft industry is to enhance customer value by improving performance and reducing environmental impact. In view of availability, aluminum alloys have a historically tendency to faster insertion due to their lower manufacturing and operated production infrastructure. In landing gear components, wear and corrosion control of many components is accomplished by surface treatments of chrome electroplating on steel or anodizing of aluminum. One of the most interesting environmentally safer and cleaner alternatives for the replacement of hard chrome plating or anodizing is tungsten carbide thermal spray coating, applied by the high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) process. However, it was observed that residual stresses originating from these coatings reduce the fatigue strength of a component. An effective process as shot peening treatment, considered to improve the fatigue strength, pushes the crack sources beneath the surface in most of medium and high cycle cases, due to the compressive residual stress field induced. The objective of this research is to evaluate a tungsten carbide cobalt (WC-Co) coating applied by the high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) process, used to replace anodizing. Anodic films were grown on 7050-T7451 aluminum alloy by sulfuric acid anodizing, chromic acid anodizing and hard anodizing. The influence on axial fatigue strength of anodic films grown on the aluminum alloy surface is to degrade the stress-life performance of the base material. Three groups of specimens were prepared and tested in axial fatigue to obtain S-N curves: base material, base material coated by HVOF and base material shot peened and coated.Experimental results revealed increase in the fatigue strength of Al 7050-T7451 alloy associated with the WC 17% Co coating. on the other hand, a reduction in fatigue life occurred in the shot peened and coated condition. Scanning electron microscopy technique and optical microscopy were used to observe crack origin sites, thickness and coating/substrate adhesion. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical behavior of the annealed Cu-5wt.%Ni alloy in 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied by means of open-circuit potential (E-OCP) measurements, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and quasi-stationary linear potential sweep. The hydrodynamics of the system was also studied. This material is constituted by a single a, phase. The anodic behavior of a Cu-Ni alloy in H2SO4 consists fundamentally on the electrodissolution of Cu, its main component, and the formation of a sulfur-containing passive layer. The presence of Ni decreases the rate of Cu oxidation, mostly at high positive potentials. The impedance spectra, obtained for the unrotating electrode, can be interpreted in terms of a simple charge-transfer reaction across a surface layer. When the electrode is rotated, the occurrence of an inductive loop evidenced the existence of an adsorbed layer. All the resistance estimated from the proposed equivalent circuits diminished with the electrode rotation rate, emphasizing the influence of ion transport in the overall electrode process. The system presented two anodic Tafel slopes: 40 mV dec(-1) for E < 255 mV and 67 mV dec(-1) for E > 275 mV. A Tafel slope of 40 mV dec(-1) evidences that copper dissolution can be interpreted in terms of the mechanism proposed by Mattsson and Bockris. The second Tafel suggests that at potentials more positive than 275 mV, copper dissolves according to a mechanism that considers the disproportionation of adsorbed Cu(1) species. The biooxidation of ferrous ion into ferric ion by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans can be potentially used for the removal of H2S from industrial gases. In this work, Fe3+ ions were obtained through the oxidation of Fe2+ using the LR strain of At. ferrooxidans immobilized in PVC stands in a pilot-scale bioreactor, while H2S was removed in an absorption tower equipped with Rasching rings. At. ferrooxidans LR strain cells were immobilized by inoculating the bacterium in a Fe2+-mineral medium and percolating it through the support. After complete Fe2+ oxidation, which took around 90 h, the reactor was washed several times with sulfuric acid (pH 1.7) before a new cycle was started. Four additional cycles using fresh Fe2+ mineral medium were then run. During these colonization cycles, the time required for complete iron oxidation decreased, dropping to about 60 h in the last cycle. The batch experiments in the H2S gas removal trials resulted in a gas removal rate of about 98-99% under the operational conditions employed. In the continuous experiments with the bioreactor coupled to the gas absorption column, a gas removal efficiency of almost 100% was reached after 500 min. Precipitate containing mainly sulfur formed during the experimental trial was identified by EDX. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Small-angle X-ray scattering study of the smart thermo-optical behavior of zirconyl aqueous colloids
Resumo:
The smart thermo-optical systems studied here are based on the unusual thermoreversible sol-gel transition of zirconyl chloride aqueous solution modified by sulfuric acid in the molar ratio Zr/SO4:3/1. The transparency to the visible light changes during heating due to light scattering. This feature is related to the aggregates growth that occurs during gelation. These reversible changes can be controlled by the amount of chloride ions in solution. The thermoreversible sol-gel transition temperature increases from 323 to 343 K by decreasing the molar ratio Cl/Zr from 7.0 to 1.3. In this work the effect of the concentration of chloride ions on the structural characteristics of the system has been analyzed by in situ SAXS measurements during the sol-gel transition carried out at 323 and 333 K. The experimental SAXS curves of sols exhibit three regions at small, medium and high scattering vectors characteristics of Guinier, fractal and Porod regimes, respectively. The radius of primary particles, obtained from the crossover between the fractal and Porod regimes, remains almost invariable with the chloride concentration, and the value (4 Angstrom) is consistent with the size of the molecular precursor. During the sol-gel transition the aggregates grow with a fractal structure and the fractal dimensionality decreases from 2.4 to 1.8. This last value is characteristic of a cluster-cluster aggregation controlled by a diffusion process. Furthermore, the time exponent of aggregate growth presents values of 0.33 and 1, typical of diffusional and hydrodynamic motions. A crossover between these two regimes is observed.

The activation of pre-kininogenin to kininogenin (pre-kallikrein to kallikrein) is one of the steps in the series of reactions of a complex system, linked also to fibrinolysis and coagulation, that leads to kinin release in plasma (See Cochrane et al., 1976; Wuepper, 1976; Kaplan et al., 1976; Kaplan et al., 1976). For human plasma, a test using kaolin as activator and measuring kallikrein activity with the chromogenic substrate Chromozym PK (Nα-benzoyl-prolyl-phenylalanyl-arginyl-nitroanilide, Pentapharm, Basle) is routinely employed. The purpose of this paper is to further study the mechanism of this activation, by means of different activators and using as inhibitor hexadimethrine bromide (Polybrene). Besides kaolin, sulfated polysaccharides, such as heparin and cellulose sulfate are able to activate pre-kininogenin to kininogenin. Hexadimethrine as expected, inhibited the activation by heparin and also that by cellulose sulfate. The activation by kaolin however followed a different pattern suggesting, at least partially, a different mode of action of this activator. © 1979.

A calibration method was developed using flow injection analysis (FI) with a Gradient Calibration Method (GCM). The method allows the rapid determination of zinc In foods (approximately 30 min) after treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid and 30% hydrogen peroxide, and analysis with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The method provides analytical results with a relative standard deviation of about 2% and requires less time than by conventional FI calibration. The electronic selection of different segments along the gradient and monitoring of the technique covers wide concentration ranges while maintaining the inherent high precision of flow injection analysis. Concentrations, flow rates, and flow times of the reagents were optimized in order to obtain best accuracy and precision. Flow rates of 10 mL/min were selected for zinc. In addition, the system enables electronic dilution and calibration where a multipoint curve can be constructed using a single sample injection.

PtRu/C nanocatalysts were prepared by a microemulsion method using different values of water/surfactant molar ratio in order to get different particle sizes. Crystallite sizes and structural properties were determined by X-ray diffraction. Particle size and distribution were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and average composition was determined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated the presence of oxides in the as-prepared catalysts. The general electrochemical behavior was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in 0.5 M sulfuric acid and the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of methanol was studied in 0.5 M methanol acid solutions by potential sweeps and chronoamperometry. copyright The Electrochemical Society.
