A novel, solution-processable non-fullerene electron acceptor 9,9′-(5,5-dioctyl-5H-dibenzo [b,d]silole-3,7-diyl)bis(2,7-dioctyl-4-(octylamino)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone) (B3) based on dibenzosilole and naphthalenediimide building blocks was designed, synthesized, characterized and successfully used in a bulk-heterojunction organic solar cell. B3 displayed excellent solubility, thermal stability and acquired electron energy levels matching with those of archetypal donor polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene). Solution-processable bulk-heterojunction devices afforded 1.16% power conversion efficiency with a high fill factor of 53%. B3 is the first example in the literature using this design principle, where mild donor units at the peripheries of end-capped naphthalenediimide units tune solubility and optical energy levels simultaneously.

There is an increased interest in measuring the amount of greenhouse gases produced by farming practices . This paper describes an integrated solar powered Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gas sensing system for greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural lands. The system uses a generic gas sensing system for CH4 and CO2 concentrations using metal oxide (MoX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors, and a new solar cell encapsulation method to power the unmanned aerial system (UAS)as well as a data management platform to store, analyze and share the information with operators and external users. The system was successfully field tested at ground and low altitudes, collecting, storing and transmitting data in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping. The system can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications at a relatively low operational cost. In particular, agricultural environments are increasingly subject to emissions mitigation policies. Accurate measurements of CH4 and CO2 with its temporal and spatial variability can provide farm managers key information to plan agricultural practices. Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanoscale architectures comprised of building blocks, with specifically engineered morphologies, are expected to play important roles in the fabrication of 'next generation' microelectronic and optoelectronic devices due to their high surface-to-volume ratio as well as opto-electronic properties. Herein, a series of well-defined 3D hierarchical rutile TiO2 architectures (HRT) were successfully prepared using a facile hydrothermal method without any surfactant or template, simply by changing the concentration of hydrochloric acid used in the synthesis. The production of these materials provides, to the best of our knowledge, the first identified example of a ledgewise growth mechanism in a rutile TiO2 structure. Also for the first time, a Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSC) combining a HRT is reported in conjunction with a high-extinction-coefficient metal-free organic sensitizer (D149), achieving a conversion efficiency of 5.5%, which is superior to ones employing P25 (4.5%), comparable to state-of-the-art commercial transparent titania anatase paste (5.8%). Further to this, an overall conversion efficiency 8.6% was achieved when HRT was used as the light scattering layer, a considerable improvement over the commercial transparent/reflector titania anatase paste (7.6%), a significantly smaller gap in performance than has been seen previously.

A brief survey of the historical development of a photoelectrochemical solar cell is given. The principle and future of solar chargeable battery is compared with a wet and a dry type photovoltaic cell. A solar chargeable battery, with or without a membrane and with an aqueous solution or with solid-state electrolytes is discussed. A new unique type of configuration “Sharon-Schottky” junction solar cell is described which can be used either as a charger for any secondary batteries or could be used for photoelectrolysis of water. All these configurations and their relative merits are discussed. A review on the various semiconductors and types of solar chargeable batteries is made. Finally, a conclusion is drawn for future direction of research for developing an economically viable photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cell based on either the principle of a solar charger (to charge a Ni---Cd battery or lead—acid battery) and/or solar chargeable battery with or without without a membrane. Some new innovative ideas for the preparation of materials is discussed. The entire discussion is geared towards answering a relevant question: what has gone wrong to result in the stagnation and failure in commercialization of a PEC based solar cell?

GaAs/Ge heterostructures having abrupt interfaces were grown on 2degrees, 6degrees, and 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates and investigated by cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical capacitance voltage (ECV) profiler. The GaAs films were grown on off-oriented Ge substrates with growth temperature in the range of 600-700degreesC, growth rate of 3-12 mum/hr and a V/III ratio of 29-88. The lattice indexing of HRTEM exhibits an excellent lattice line matching between GaAs and Ge substrate. The PL spectra from GaAs layer on 6degrees off-cut Ge substrate shows the higher excitonic peak compared with 2degrees and 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates. In addition, the luminescence intensity from the GaAs solar cell grown on 6degrees off-cut is higher than on 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates and signifies the potential use of 6degrees off-cut Ge substrate in the GaAs solar cells industry. The ECV profiling shows an abrupt film/substrate interface as well as between various layers of the solar cell structures.

In this work composites of poly(3-hexylethiophene) (P3HT) and a thiophene derivative (7, 9-di (thiophen-2-yl)-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthylen-8-one) (DTCPA) having donor acceptor architecture (DAD) were prepared. Photovoltaic properties of these hybrid composites were evaluated. DTCPA, which is a highly crystalline organic molecule with wide absorption range, was observed to improve the open circuit voltage of the solar cell. Furthermore, DTCPA crystals acts as a nucleating center and increases the molecular ordering of P3HT in the composite. Improved charge separation efficiency was observed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Because of high built in potential in these devices, large open circuit voltage was observed. In this work, we have prepared two donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) pi-conjugated oligomers to investigate the effect of phase separation on the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. These charge transfer low band gap pi-conjugated oligomers (TTB and NMeTTB) were synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of terthiophenecarbaldehyde and barbiturate appended pyran derivative. The thin film morphology of both the oligomers and along with electron acceptor 6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The blend of NMeTTB and PC61BM thin film yield highly ordered thin film, whereas there was clear phase separation between TTB and PC61BM in thin film. The BHJ solar cell was fabricated using a blend of NMeTTB and TTB with PC61BM acceptor in 1:1 ratio as active layer, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.8% was obtained. This device characteristic was compared with device having TTB:PC61BM as active layer, and large difference is observed in photocurrents. This poor performance of TTB in BHJ devices was attributed to the difference in the nanoscale morphology of the corresponding derivatives. We rationalize our findings based on the low charge carrier mobility in organic field-effect transistors and miscibility/phase separation parameter of binary components (oligomers and PC61BM) in the active layer of bulk heterojunction solar cells.

We present a photoanode for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on ZnO nanoshell deposited by atomic layer deposition at 150 degrees C on a mesoporous insulating template. An ultrathin layer of ZnO between. 3 and 6 nm, which exhibits quantum confinement effect, is found to be sufficient to transport the photogenerated electrons to the external contacts and exhibits near-unity collection efficiency. A 6 nm ZnO nanoshell on a 2.5 mu m mesoporous nanoparticle Al2O3 template yields photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.2% in liquid DSC. Perovskite absorber (CH3NH3PbI3) based solid state solar cells made with similar ZnO nanostructures lead to a high PCE of 7%.

A special morphological zinc oxide (ZnO) photoanode for dye-sensitized solar cell was fabricated by simple sol-gel drop casting technique. This film shows a wrinkled structure resembling the roots of banyan tree, which acts as an effective self scattering layer for harvesting more visible light and offers an easy transport path for photo-injected electrons. These ZnO electrode of low thickness (similar to 5 mu m) gained an enhanced short-circuit current density of 6.15 mA/cm(2), open-circuit voltage of 0.67 V, fill factor of 0.47 and overall conversion efficiency of 1.97 % under 1 sun illumination. This shows a high conversion efficiency and a superior performance than that of ZnO nanoparticle-based photoanode (eta similar to 1.13 %) of high thickness (similar to 8 mu m).

SnS quantum dot solar cell is fabricated by Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method. SnS layer is optimized by different SILAR cycles of deposition. The particle size increased with the increase in number of SILAR cycles. Cu2S coated FTO is used as counter electrode against the conventional Platinum electrode. On comparison with a cell having a counter electrodeelectrolyte combination of Platinum-Iodine, Cu2S-polysulfide combination is found to improve both the short circuit current and fill factor of the solar cell. A maximum efficiency of 0.54% is obtained with an open circuit voltage of 311 mV and short circuit current density of 4.86 mA/cm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Power conversion efficiency of a solar cell is a complex parameter which usually hides the molecular details of the charge generation process. For rationally tailoring the overall device efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell, detailed molecular understanding of photoinduced reactions at the dye-TiO2 interface has to be achieved. Recently, near-IR absorbing diketopyrrolopyrrole-based (DPP) low bandgap polymeric dyes with enhanced photostabilities have been used for TiO2 sensitization with moderate efficiencies. To improve the reported device performances, a critical analysis of the polymerTiO(2) interaction and electron transfer dynamics is imperative. Employing a combination of time-resolved optical measurements complemented by low temperature EPR and steady-state Raman spectroscopy on polymerTiO(2) conjugates, we provide direct evidence for photoinduced electron injection from the TDPP-BBT polymer singlet state into TiO2 through the C-O group of the DPP-core. A detailed excited state description of the electron transfer process in films reveals instrument response function (IRF) limited (<110 fs) charge injection from a minor polymer fraction followed by a picosecond recombination. The major fraction of photoexcited polymers, however, does not show injection indicating pronounced ground state heterogeneity induced due to nonspecific polymerTiO(2) interactions. Our work therefore underscores the importance of gathering molecular-level insight into the competitive pathways of ultrafast charge generation along with probing the chemical heterogeneity at the nanoscale within the polymerTiO2 films for optimizing photovoltaic device efficiencies.

Semiconductor fabrication process begins with photolithography. Preparing a photo mask is the key process step in photolithography. The photo mask was fabricated by inscribing patterns directly onto a soda lime glass with the help of a laser beam, as it is easily controllable. Laser writer LW405-A was used for preparing the mask in this study. Exposure wavelength of 405 nm was used, with which 1.2 mu m feature size can be written in direct write-mode over the soda lime glass plate. The advantage of using the fabricated mask is that it can be used to design back contacts for thin film Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. To investigate the process capability of LW405-A, same pattern with different line widths was written on soda lime glass samples at different writing speeds. The pattern was inscribed without proximity effect and stitching errors, which was characterized using optical microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). It was proven that writing speed of a mask-writer is decided according to the intended feature size and line width. As the writing speed increases, the edges of the patterns become rougher due to uneven scattering of the laser beam. From the fabricated mask, the solar cell can be developed embedding both the contacts at the bottom layer, to increase the absorption of solar radiation on the top surface effectively by increasing light absorption area.

Thin films of conducting palladium selenide phases (Pd17Se15 and Pd7Se4) are prepared using a single source molecular precursor by thermolysis. Varying the mole ratios of palladium and selenium precursors results in palladium organo-selenolate complexes which on thermolysis at different temperatures yield Pd17Se15 and Pd7Se4 phases that are very stable and adherent to the substrate. The organo-selenolate complexes are characterized using small angle XRD, Se-77 NMR and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The palladium selenide films are characterized by various techniques such as XRD, XPS, TEM and SEM. Electrical conductivities of the films are determined using the four probe method. The strong adherence of the films to glass substrates coupled with high corrosion resistant behavior towards strong acid and alkaline environments render them to be very effective as electrocatalysts. The catalytic activity towards the I-3(-)/I- redox couple, which is an important reaction in the regeneration of the dye in a dye-sensitized solar cell, is studied. Between the two phases, the Pd17Se15 film shows superior activity as the counter electrode for dye sensitized solar cells with a photocurrent conversion efficiency of 7.45%.

Thin films of CuIn1-xAlxSe2 (CIAS) were grown on the flexible 10 micrometer thin stainless steel substrates, by dc co-sputtering from the elemental cathodes, followed by annealing with modified selenization. CuInAl alloyed precursor films were selenized both by noble gas assisted Se vapor transport in a tubular furnace and vacuum evaporation of Se in an evaporation chamber. CIAS thin films were optimized for better adhesion. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the selenized films. The composition of CIAS films was varied by substituting In with Al in CuInSe2 (CIS) from 0 <= x <= 0.65 (x = Al/Al+In). Lattice parameters, average crystallite sizes, and compact density of the films, decreased when compared to CIS and (112) peak shifted to higher Bragg's angle, upon Al incorporation. The dislocation density and strain were found to increase with Al doping. Solar cells with SS/Mo/CIAS/CdS/iZnO: AZnO/Al configuration were fabricated and were tested for current-voltage characteristics for various `x' values, under Air Mass 1.5 Global one sun illumination. The best CIAS solar cell showed the efficiency of 6.8%, with x = 0.13, Eg = 1.17 eV, fill factor 45.04, and short circuit current density J(sc) 30 mA/cm(2).
