Intracavity frequency doubling of an optically pumped GaInNAs semiconductor disk laser by a periodically poled near-stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal has been investigated. Stable second-harmonic generation at 610nm has been achieved with an output power of 730mW, limited only by the spectral acceptance range and Fresnel losses of the crystal. Spectral tuning of 8nm was realised with a Fabry-Pérot etalon. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

A compact all-room-temperature CW 73-nm tunable laser source in the visible spectral region (574nm-647nm) has been demonstrated by frequency-doubling of a broadly-tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dot external-cavity diode laser in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguides with a maximum output power in excess of 12mW and a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10%. Three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4×4μm2, 3×5μm2 and 2x6μm2) were investigated. Introduction - Development of compact broadly tunable laser sources in the visible spectral region is currently very attractive area of research with applications ranging from photomedicine and biophotonics to confocal fluorescence microscopy and laser projection displays. In this respect, semiconductor lasers with their small size, high efficiency, reliability and low cost are very promising for realization of such sources by frequencydoubling of the infrared light in nonlinear crystal waveguides. Furthermore, the wide tunability offered by quantum-dot (QD) external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL), due to the temperature insensibility and broad gain bandwidth [1,2], is very promising for the development of tunable visible laser sources [3,4]. In this work we show a compact green-to-red tunable allroom-temperature CW laser source using a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal waveguides. This laser source generates frequency-doubled light over the 574nm-647nm wavelength range utilizing the significant difference in the effective refractive indices of high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [3]. Experimental results - Experimental setup used in this work was similar to that described in [3] and consisted of a QD gain chip in the quasiLittrow configuration and a PPKTP waveguide. Coarse wavelength tuning of the QD-ECDL between 1140 nm and 1300 nm at 20°C was possible for pump current of 1.5 A. The laser output was coupled into the PPKTP waveguide using an AR-coated 40x aspheric lens (NA ~ 0.55). The PPKTP frequency-doubling crystal (not AR coated) used in our work was 18 mm in length and was periodically poled for SHG (with the poling period of ~ 11.574 11m). The crystal contained 3 different waveguides with cross-sectional areas of ~ 4x4 11m2, 3x5 11m2 and 2x6 11m2. Both the pump laser and the PPKTP crystal were operating at room temperature. The waveguides with cross-sectional areas of 4x411m2, 3x511m2 and 2x611m2 demonstrated the tunability in the wavelength ranges of 577nm - 647nm, 576nm -643nm and 574nm - 641nm, respectively, with a maximum output power of 12.04mW at 606 nm Conclusion - We demonstrated a compact all-room-temperature broadlytunable laser source operating in the visible spectral region between 574nm and 647nm. This laser source is based on second harmonic generation in PPKTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas using an InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL References [I] E.U. Rafailov, M.A. Cataluna, and W. We propose a novel scheme for resolving the contribution of inner- and outer-valence electrons in XUV-initiated high-harmonic generation in neon. By probing the atom with a low energy (below the 2s ionisation threshold) ultrashort XUV pulse, the 2p electron is steered away from the core, while the 2s electron is enabled to describe recollision trajectories. By selectively suppressing the 2p recollision trajectories we can resolve the contribution of the 2s electron to the high-harmonic spectrum. We apply the classical trajectory model to account for the contribution of the 2s electron, which allows for an intuitive understanding of the process.
Theoretical and numerical investigation of plasmon nanofocusing in metallic tapered rods and grooves
Resumo:
Effective focusing of electromagnetic (EM) energy to nanoscale regions is one of the major challenges in nano-photonics and plasmonics. The strong localization of the optical energy into regions much smaller than allowed by the diffraction limit, also called nanofocusing, offers promising applications in nano-sensor technology, nanofabrication, near-field optics or spectroscopy. One of the most promising solutions to the problem of efficient nanofocusing is related to surface plasmon propagation in metallic structures. Metallic tapered rods, commonly used as probes in near field microscopy and spectroscopy, are of a particular interest. They can provide very strong EM field enhancement at the tip due to surface plasmons (SP’s) propagating towards the tip of the tapered metal rod. A large number of studies have been devoted to the manufacturing process of tapered rods or tapered fibers coated by a metal film. On the other hand, structures such as metallic V-grooves or metal wedges can also provide strong electric field enhancements but manufacturing of these structures is still a challenge. It has been shown, however, that the attainable electric field enhancement at the apex in the V-groove is higher than at the tip of a metal tapered rod when the dissipation level in the metal is strong. Metallic V-grooves also have very promising characteristics as plasmonic waveguides. This thesis will present a thorough theoretical and numerical investigation of nanofocusing during plasmon propagation along a metal tapered rod and into a metallic V-groove. Optimal structural parameters including optimal taper angle, taper length and shape of the taper are determined in order to achieve maximum field enhancement factors at the tip of the nanofocusing structure. An analytical investigation of plasmon nanofocusing by metal tapered rods is carried out by means of the geometric optics approximation (GOA), which is also called adiabatic nanofocusing. However, GOA is applicable only for analysing tapered structures with small taper angles and without considering a terminating tip structure in order to neglect reflections. Rigorous numerical methods are employed for analysing non-adiabatic nanofocusing, by tapered rod and V-grooves with larger taper angles and with a rounded tip. These structures cannot be studied by analytical methods due to the presence of reflected waves from the taper section, the tip and also from (artificial) computational boundaries. A new method is introduced to combine the advantages of GOA and rigorous numerical methods in order to reduce significantly the use of computational resources and yet achieve accurate results for the analysis of large tapered structures, within reasonable calculation time. Detailed comparison between GOA and rigorous numerical methods will be carried out in order to find the critical taper angle of the tapered structures at which GOA is still applicable. It will be demonstrated that optimal taper angles, at which maximum field enhancements occur, coincide with the critical angles, at which GOA is still applicable. It will be shown that the applicability of GOA can be substantially expanded to include structures which could be analysed previously by numerical methods only. The influence of the rounded tip, the taper angle and the role of dissipation onto the plasmon field distribution along the tapered rod and near the tip will be analysed analytically and numerically in detail. It will be demonstrated that electric field enhancement factors of up to ~ 2500 within nanoscale regions are predicted. These are sufficient, for instance, to detect single molecules using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with the tip of a tapered rod, an approach also known as tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy or TERS. The results obtained in this project will be important for applications for which strong local field enhancement factors are crucial for the performance of devices such as near field microscopes or spectroscopy. The optimal design of nanofocusing structures, at which the delivery of electromagnetic energy to the nanometer region is most efficient, will lead to new applications in near field sensors, near field measuring technology, or generation of nanometer sized energy sources. This includes: applications in tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS); manipulation of nanoparticles and molecules; efficient coupling of optical energy into and out of plasmonic circuits; second harmonic generation in non-linear optics; or delivery of energy to quantum dots, for instance, for quantum computations.

Grading osteoarthritic tissue has, until now, been a laboratory process confined to research activities. This thesis establishes a scientific protocol that extends osteoarthritic tissue ranking to surgical practice. The innovative protocol, which now incorporates the structural degeneration of collagen, enhances the traditional Modified Mankin ranking system, enabling its application to real time decision during surgery. Because it is fast and without time consuming laboratory process, it would potentially enable the cataloguing of tissues in osteoarthritic joints in all compartments of diseased joints during surgery for epistemological study and insight into the manifestation of osteoarthritis across age, gender, occupation, physical activities and race.

The carrier blocking property of polyterpenol thin films derived from non-synthetic precursor is studied using Electric Field Induced Optical Second Harmonic Generation (EFISHG) technique that can directly probe carrier motion in organic materials. A properly biased double-layer MIM device with a structure of indium zinc oxide (IZO)/polyterpenol/C₆₀/Al shows that by incorporating the polyterpenol thin film, the electron transport can be blocked while the hole transport is allowed. The inherent electron blocking hole transport property is verified using Al/C₆₀/Alq3/polyterpenol/IZO and Al/Alq3/polyterpenol/IZO structures. The rectifying property of polyterpenol is very promising and can be utilized in the fabrication of many organic devices.

Dielectric measurements on the charge-ordered insulators, Y1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.4. 0.45 and 0.5), show maxima in the dielectric constant around the charge ordering transition temperature while magnetic measurements show the presence of weak ferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. Besides the magnetic field dependence of the dielectric constant, these manganites also exhibit second harmonic generation. Thus, the charge-ordered Y1-xCaxMnO3 compositions are multiferroic and magnetoelectric, in accordance with theoretical predictions. Magnetoelectric properties are retained in small particles of Y0.5Ca0.5MnO3. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Ultrasonic measurement of the elastic constants of sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals
Resumo:
Sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals possess excellent nonlinear optical properties such that they can be used for optical second-harmonic generation. It belongs to the orthorhombic system with the space group Ima2. Slow evaporation or slow cooling techniques can be used to grow good optical quality single crystals from supersaturated solution. All the nine elastic constants of this crystal have been measured using an ultrasonic technique. Samples for measurements have been cut along desired crystallographic axes and the pulse echo overlap technique has been used to measure longitudinal and shear ultrasonic wave velocities along appropriate symmetry directions in the crystal. The McSkimin Delta t criterion has been applied to determine the round trip travel time accurately, from which the nine elastic constants have been evaluated. Temperature variation of selected elastic constants in a limited range have also been measured and reported.

We describe three different families of metal oxides, viz., (i) protonated layered perovskites, (ii) framework phosphates of NASICON and KTiOPO4 (KTP) structures and (iii) layered and three-dimensional oxides in the H-V-W-O system, synthesized by 'soft-chemical' routes involving respectively ion-exchange, redox deinteracalation and acid-leaching from appropriate parent oxides. Oxides of the first family, HyA2B3O10(A = La/Ca; B = Ti/Nb), exhibit variable Bronsted acidity and intercalation behaviour that depend on the interlayer structure. V2(PO4)3 prepared by oxidative deintercalation from Na3V2(PO4)3 is a new host material exhibiting reductive insertion of lithium/hydrogen, while K0.5Nb0.5 M0.5OPO4(M = Ti, V) are novel KTP-like materials exhibiting second harmonic generation of 1064 nm radiation. HxVxW1-xO3 for x = 0.125 and 0.33 possessing alpha-MoO3 and hexagonal WO3 structures, prepared by acid-leaching of LiVWO6, represent functionalized oxide materials exhibiting redox and acid-base intercalation reactivity.

Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and its isomorphs have received enormous attention in the last 2 decades. In particular, KTP assumes importance due to its large nonlinear optic and electrooptic coefficients together with the broad thermal and angular acceptance for second harmonic generation. This article provides an overview of the material aspects, structural, physical, and chemical properties and device feasibility of the KTP family of crystals. Some of the current areas of research and development along with their significance in understanding the physical properties as well as device applications are addressed. Optical waveguide fabrication processes and characteristics with their relevance to the present-day technology are highlighted. Studies performed so far have enabled us to understand the fundamental aspects of these materials and what needs to be pursued vigorously is the exploitation of their device applications to the maximum extent.

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
