The research is to design a differential pumping system not only to achieve the pressure transition with a large throughput, but also to achieve a clean system without back-oil. In the paper, the pressure in differential stages is calculated; the differential pumping system design and equipment choice are introduced; the tests of Molecular/Booster Pump (MBP), a new kind of molecular-drag pump with large throughout and clean vacuum are described and the system experimental result and analysis are presented.

A multistream reactor for high-throughput examining the surface acidity by NH3-TPD method by application of multistream mass spectrometer screening (MSMSS) technique has been developed. This method allows for examining the surface acidity of 10 catalyst samples in about 6 h, which is an improvement over the traditional process. The demonstration of the feasibility of high-throughput TPD can be significant in convincing the hardened traditionalists in the heterogeneous catalysis community that, combinatorial methods indeed should have an important place in scientific catalyst research and development. The developed method could also be used for almost all the temperature-programmed analysis theoretically with careful designed multistream reactors. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An alternative way to optimize the emission characteristics of a microcavity top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (TOLED) based on a simple device structure is demonstrated via combining a comprehensive theoretical analysis in the microcavity effects with the experimental modification in the carrier injection of both electrodes. It can be seen that the resulting TOLED exhibits much higher efficiencies and a more saturated color than those of the corresponding conventional bottom-emitting device, as well as hardly detectable color shift with viewing angles. Such a strategy may be more feasible in practical application for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode displays.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

A series of novel iridium(III) complexes with two 2-arylquinoline derivatives as cyclometalated ligands and one monoanionic ligand, such as acetylacetonate (acac), N,N'-diethyldithiocarbamate (Et(2)dtc) and O,O'-diethyldithiophosphate (Et(2)dtp), as ancillary ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized by H-1 NMR, MS and elemental analysis (EA). The cyclic voltammetry, absorption, emission and electroluminescence properties of these complexes were systematically investigated. Through extending pi-conjugation, introducing electron-donating groups in the ligand frame, or changing the ancillary ligands, the HOMO energy levels of the iridium(III) complexes can be tuned, while their LUMO levels remain little affected; in consequence, the emission wavelengths of the iridium(III) complexes can be tuned in the range 606-653 nm. The highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with saturated red emission have been demonstrated. A maximum current efficiency of 10.79 cd A(-1), at a current density of 0.74 mA cm(-2), with an emission wavelength of 616 nm and Commisioon Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.65, 0.35), which are very close to the National Television System Comittee (NSTC) standard red emission, have been achieved when using complex (DPQ)(2)Ir(acac) as a phosphor dopant.

Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. The high mortality rate of immunocompromised patients with fungal infections and the limited availability of highly efficacious and safe agents demand the development of new antifungal therapeutics. To rapidly discover such agents, we developed a high-throughput synergy screening (HTSS) strategy for novel microbial natural products. Specifically, a microbial natural product library was screened for hits that synergize the effect of a low dosage of ketoconazole (KTC) that alone shows little detectable fungicidal activity. Through screening of approximate to 20,000 microbial extracts, 12 hits were identified with broadspectrum antifungal activity. Seven of them showed little cytotoxicity against human hepatoma cells. Fractionation of the active extracts revealed beauvericin (BEA) as the most potent component, because it dramatically synergized KTC activity against diverse fungal pathogens by a checkerboard assay. Significantly, in our immunocompromised mouse model, combinations of BEA (0.5 mg/kg) and KTC (0.5 mg/kg) prolonged survival of the host infected with Candida parapsilosis and reduced fungal colony counts in animal organs including kidneys, lungs, and brains. Such an effect was not achieved even with the high dose of 50 mg/kg KTC. These data support synergism between BEA and KTC and thereby a prospective strategy for antifungal therapy.

A floating dust weather happened on March 11-12, 1995 over the Qingdao region. Its sources and throughput to the ocean were studied. The result indicated that the floating dust was caused by the dust storm that starred in northwestern China and developed in northern China. 21 x 10(6)t fine soil particles were carried to the ocean during the episode.

In order to investigate the corrosion of pipeline materials in Seabed Sediment (SBS) environment, weight-loss and electrochemical measurements in saturated sand and mud cells with seawater were performed for a simulation. The used electrochemical measurements included linear polarization resistance (LPR) and potentiodynamic scanning measurement. It was showed that the corrosion rate of mild steel in the present condition was lower than the corrosion rate of other marine environment corrosion zones of it; that the granularity of SBS could affect the corrosion behavior greatly; that with increasing grain size of SBS, the corrosion rate increased. Integrated over the results of the weight loss and polarization curves, the oxygen diffusion (oxygen as a depolarizant agent) mechanism was proposed and discussed.

A sensitive method for the determination of free fatty acids using 2-(2-(anthracen-10-yl)-1H-naphtho[2,3-dimidazol-1-yl) ethyl-p-toluenesuIfonate (ANITS) as tagging reagent with fluorescence detection has been developed. ANITS could easily and quickly label fatty acids in the presence of the K2CO3 catalyst at 90 degrees C for 40 min in N,N-dimethylformamide solvent. From the extracts of rape bee pollen samples, 20 free fatty acids were sensitively determined. Fatty acid derivatives were separated on a reversed-phase Eclipse XDB-C8 column by HPLC in conjunction with gradient elution. The corresponding derivatives were identified by post-column APCI/MS in positive-ion detection mode. ANITS-fatty acid derivatives gave an intense molecular ion peak at mlz [M+H](+); with MS/MS analysis, the collision-induced dissociation spectra of m/z [M+H](+) produced the specific fragment ions at mlz [M-345](+) and mlz 345.0 (here, m/z 345 is the core structural moiety of the ANITS molecule). The fluorescence excitation and emission wavelengths of the derivatives were lambda(ex) = 250 nm and lambda(em) = 512 nm, respectively. Linear correlation coefficients for all fatty acid derivatives are > 0.9999. Detection limits, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 : 1, are 24.76-98.79 fmol for the labeled fatty acids.

High-throughput screening of HZSM-5 supported metal-oxides catalysts were carried out for the coupling reaction of methane with CO to aromatics in a multi-stream reactor system. Zn/HZSM-5 and Mo/HZSM-5 were observed to be rather effective for the catalytic formation of aromatics from the coupling reaction of methane with CO. Temperature-programmed reaction has further proven the efficiency of the coupling of methane and CO over Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst. The results were also validated in a conventional fixed-bed reactor coupled with GC. The results propose that the coupling methane with CO toward benzene and naphthalene can be catalyzed by Zn/HZSM-5 at 500 ° C. Both methane and CO are needed for the formation of reactive coke on the catalyst, and the reactive coke may be the initial product in the producing of hydrocarbons. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. The quantification of protein-ligand interactions is essential for systems biology, drug discovery, and bioengineering. Ligand-induced changes in protein thermal stability provide a general, quantifiable signature of binding and may be monitored with dyes such as Sypro Orange (SO), which increase their fluorescence emission intensities upon interaction with the unfolded protein. This method is an experimentally straightforward, economical, and high-throughput approach for observing thermal melts using commonly available real-time polymerase chain reaction instrumentation. However, quantitative analysis requires careful consideration of the dye-mediated reporting mechanism and the underlying thermodynamic model. We determine affinity constants by analysis of ligand-mediated shifts in melting-temperature midpoint values. Ligand affinity is determined in a ligand titration series from shifts in free energies of stability at a common reference temperature. Thermodynamic parameters are obtained by fitting the inverse first derivative of the experimental signal reporting on thermal denaturation with equations that incorporate linear or nonlinear baseline models. We apply these methods to fit protein melts monitored with SO that exhibit prominent nonlinear post-transition baselines. SO can perturb the equilibria on which it is reporting. We analyze cases in which the ligand binds to both the native and denatured state or to the native state only and cases in which protein:ligand stoichiometry needs to treated explicitly.

Predicting from first-principles calculations whether mixed metallic elements phase-separate or form ordered structures is a major challenge of current materials research. It can be partially addressed in cases where experiments suggest the underlying lattice is conserved, using cluster expansion (CE) and a variety of exhaustive evaluation or genetic search algorithms. Evolutionary algorithms have been recently introduced to search for stable off-lattice structures at fixed mixture compositions. The general off-lattice problem is still unsolved. We present an integrated approach of CE and high-throughput ab initio calculations (HT) applicable to the full range of compositions in binary systems where the constituent elements or the intermediate ordered structures have different lattice types. The HT method replaces the search algorithms by direct calculation of a moderate number of naturally occurring prototypes representing all crystal systems and guides CE calculations of derivative structures. This synergy achieves the precision of the CE and the guiding strengths of the HT. Its application to poorly characterized binary Hf systems, believed to be phase-separating, defines three classes of alloys where CE and HT complement each other to uncover new ordered structures.
