A set of six new polystyrene anchored metal complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of the metal salt with the polystyrene anchored Schiff base of vanillin. These complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance studies, thermal studies, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The elemental analyses suggest a metal : ligand ratio of 1 : 2. The ligand is unidentate and coordinates through the azomethine nitrogen. The Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes are all paramagnetic while Zn(II) is diamagnetic. The Cu(II) complex is assigned a square planar structure, while Zn(II) is assigned a tetrahedral structure and Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), and Ni(II) are all assigned octahedral geometry. The thermal analyses were done on the ligand and its complexes to reveal their stability. Further, the application of the Schiff base as a chelating resin in ion removal studies was investigated. The polystyrene anchored Schiff base gave 96% efficiency in the removal of Ni(II) from a 20-ppm solution in 15 min, without any interference from ions such as Mn(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Zn(II), U(VI), Na , K , NH4 , Ca2 , Cl , Br , NO3 , NO2 ,and CH3CO2 . The major advantage is that the removal is achieved without altering the pH.

In this regard Schiff base complexes have attracted wide attention. Furthermore, such complexes are found to play important role in analytical chemistry, organic synthesis, metallurgy, refining of metals, electroplating and photography. Many Schiff base complexes are reported in literature. Their properties depend on the nature of the metal ion as well as on the nature of the ligand. By altering the ligands it is possible to obtain desired electronic environment around the metal ion. Thus there is a continuing interest in the synthesis of simple and zeolite encapsulated Schiff base complexes of metal ions. Zeolites have a number of striking structural similarities to the protein portion of natural enzymes. Zeolite based catalysts are known for their remarkable ability of mimicking the chemistry of biological systems. In view of the importance of catalysts in all the areas of modern chemical industries, an effort has been made to synthesize some simple Schiff base complexes, heterogenize them by encapsulating within the supercages of zeoliteY cavities and to study their applications. The thesis deals with studies on the synthesis and characterization of some simple and zeoliteY encapsulated Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes and on the catalytic activity of these complexes on some oxidation reactions. Simple complexes were prepared from the Schiff base ligands SBT derived from 2-aminobenzothiazole and salicylaldehyde and the ligand VBT derived from 2-aminobenzothiazole and vanillin (4-hydroxy-3- methoxybenzaldehyde). ZeoliteY encapsulated Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of Schiff base ligands SBT and VBT and also of 2-aminobenzothiazole were synthesized. All the prepared complexes were characterized using the physico-chemical techniques such as chemical analysis (employing AAS and CHN analyses), magnetic moment studies, conductance measurements and electronic and FTIR spectra. EPR spectra of the Cu(II) complexes were also carried out to know the probable structures and nature of Cu(II) complexes. Thermogravimetric analyses were carried out to obtain the information regarding the thermal stability of various complexes. The successful encapsulations of the complexes within the cavities of zeoliteY were ascertained by XRD, surface area and pore volume analysis. Assignments of geometries of simple and zeoliteY encapsulated complexes are given in all the cases. Both simple and zeoliteY encapsulated complexes were screened for catalytic activity towards oxidation reactions such as decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, oxidation of benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and cyclohexanol.
Studies on Some Transition Metal Complexes of Schiff Bases Derived from Quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde
Resumo:
Two series of transition metal complexes of Schiff bases derived from quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde with semicarbazide (QSC) and furfurylamine (QFA) were synthesised and characterised by elemental analyses, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, electronic and EPR spectral studies. The QSC complexes have the general formula [M(QSC)Cl2]. A tetrahedral structure has been assigned for the Mn(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes and a square-planar structure for the Cu(II) complex. The QFA complexes have the formula [M(QFA)2Cl2]. An octahedral structure has been assigned for these complexes. All of the complexes exhibit catalytic activity towards the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (DTBC) to 3,5-di-tert-butylquinone (DTBQ) using atmospheric oxygen. The cobalt(II) complex of the ligand QFA was found to be the most active catalyst.

The 1:1 condensation of N-methyl-1,3-diaminopropane and N,N-diethyl-1,2-diminoethane with 2-acetylpyridine, respectively at high dilution gives the tridentate mono-condensed Schiff bases N-methyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L-1) and N,N-diethyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-ethane-1,2-diamine (L-2). The tridentate ligands were allowed to react with methanol solutions of nickel(II) thiocyanate to prepare the complexes [Ni(L-1)(SCN)(2)(OH2) (1) and [{Ni(L-2)(SCN)}(2)] (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the structures of the complexes. The nickel(II) in complex 1 is bonded to three nitrogen donor atoms of the ligand L-1 in a mer orientation, together with two thiocyanates bonded through nitrogen and a water molecule, and it is the first Schiff base complex of nickel(II) containing both thiocyanate and coordinated water. The coordinated water initiates a hydrogen bonded 2D network. In complex 2, the nickel ion occupies a slightly distorted octahedral coordination sphere, being bonded to three nitrogen atoms from the ligand L-2, also in a mer orientation, and two thiocyanate anions through nitrogen. In contrast to 1, the sixth coordination site is occupied by a sulfur atom from a thiocyanate anion in an adjacent molecule, thus creating a centrosymmetric dimer. A variable temperature magnetic study of complex 2 indicates the simultaneous presence of zero-field splitting, weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions between the nickel(II) centers.

A tetranuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu4L4(H2O)4](ClO4)4 has been synthesized using the terdentate Schiff base 2-(pyridine-2-yliminomethyl)-phenol (HL) (the condensation product of salicylaldehyde and 2-aminopyridine) and copper perchlorate. Chemical characterizations such as IR and UV/Vis of the complex have been carried out. A single-crystal diffraction study shows that the complex contains a nearly planar tetranuclear core containing four copper atoms, which occupy four equivalent five-coordinate sites with a square pyramidal environment. Magnetic measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 2–300K and with 100Oe field strengths. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility data indicates a strong antiferromagnetic (J1=−638cm−1) exchange interaction between diphenoxo-bridged Cu(II) centers and a moderate antiferromagnetic (J2=−34cm−1) interaction between N–C–N bridged Cu(II) centers. Magnetic exchange interactions (J’s) are also discussed on the basis of a computational study using DFT methodology. The spin density distribution (singlet ground state) is calculated to visualize the effect of delocalization of spin density through bridging groups.

Two coordination octahedral Sn(IV) complexes [Sn(L)(2)] and cis-[SnCl(2)(L)(dmso)], where H(2)L is 2-hydroxyacetophenone (S-benzydithiocarbazate), were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR ((1)H, (13)C), (119)Sn Mossbauer spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction techniques to investigate their structural properties. Both crystallize in the Monoclinic system, with parameters: a = 8.1905(3), b = 30.8811(15), c = 12.8959(7) angstrom, beta = 94.465(3)degrees and Z = 4 for [Sn(L)(2)] and a = 8.5247(2), b = 21.5445(7), c = 12.3706(3) angstrom, beta = 96.932(2)degrees and Z = 4 for cis-[SnCl(2)(L)(dmso)]. In both complexes, the Sn(IV) central atom is coordinated in a distorted octahedral geometry with the thiolate ligand (L(2-)) coordinated via O, N and S atoms. The (119)Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy of the complexes were studied and the results revealed that both complexes posses isomer shift (delta) and quadrupole splitting (Delta), which are almost the same.

New tin(IV) complexes of empirical formula, Sn(SNNNS)I-2 (SNNNS = anionic form of the 2,6-diacetylpyridine Schiff bases of S-methyl- or S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. The structure of Sn(dapsme)I-2 has been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic structural analysis. The complex has a seven-coordinate distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with the Schiff base coordinated to the tin(IV) ion as a dinegatively charged pentadentate chelating agent via the pyridine nitrogen atom, the two azomethine nitrogen atoms and the two thiolate sulfur atoms. The ligand occupies the equatorial plane and the iodo ligands are coordinated to the tin(IV) ion at axial positions. The distortion from an ideal pentagonal bipyramidal geometry is attributed to the restricted bite size of the pentadentate ligands. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

New organometallic tin(IV) complexes of the empirical formula Sn(NNS)Ph2Cl (NNS = anionic forms of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff bases of S-methyl- and S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by IR, electronic, I H NMR and ES mass spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structures of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate (Hqaldsme) and its diphenyltin(IV) complex, Sn(qaldsme)Ph2Cl, have been determined by X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, the ligand remains as the thione tautomer in which the dithiocarbazate chain adopts an E,E configuration and is almost coplanar with the quinoline ring. The Sn(qaldsme)Ph2Cl complex crystallizes in two distinctly different conformationally isomeric forms, each having the same space group but different lattice parameters. X-ray analysis shows that in each polymorph, the tin atom adopts a distorted octahedral geometry with the Schiff base coordinated to it as a uninegatively charged tridentate chelating agent via the quinoline nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom. The two phenyl groups occupy axial positions and the chloride ligand occupies the sixth coordination position of the tin atom. The deprotonated ligand adopts an E,E,Z configuration in the complex. A binucleating potentially hexadentate chelating agent containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur as potential donor atoms (H2ONNO) has been synthesized by condensing alpha,alpha-xylenebis(N-methyldithiocarbazate) with 2,4-pentanedione. An X-ray crystallographic structure determination shows that the Schiff base remains in its ketoimine tautomeric form with the protons attached to the imine nitrogen atoms. The reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in a 1:1 stoichiometry leads to the formation of a dinuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni(ONNO)](2) (ONNO2- = dianionic form of the Schiff base) containing N,O-chelated tetradentate ligands, the sulfur donors remaining uncoordinated. A single crystal X-ray structure determination of this dimer reveals that each ligand binds two low spin nickel(II) ions, bridged by a xylyl group. The nickel(II) atoms adopt a distorted square-planar geometry in a trans-N2O2 donor environment. Reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in the presence of excess pyridine leads to the formation of a similar dinuclear complex, [Ni(ONNO)(py)](2), but in this case comprises five coordinate high-spin Ni(II) ions with pyridine ligands occupying the axial coordination sites as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. New copper(II) complexes of general empirical formula, Cu(mpsme)X center dot xCH(3)COCH(3) (mpsme = anionic form of the 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate; X = Cl, N-3, NCS, NO3; x = 0, 0.5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, electronic, EPR and susceptibility measurements. Room temperature mu(eff) values for the complexes are in the range 1.75-2.1 mu(beta) typical of uncoupled or weakly coupled Cu(II) centres. The EPR spectra of the [Cu(mpsme)X] (X = Cl, N-3, NO3, NCS) complexes reveal a tetragonally distorted coordination sphere around the mononuclear Cu(II) centre. We have exploited second derivative EPR spectra in conjunction with Fourier filtering (sine bell and Hamming functions) to extract all of the nitrogen hyperfine coupling matrices. While the X-ray crystallography of [Cu(mpsme)NCS] reveals a linear polymer in which the thiocyanate anion bridges the two copper(II) ions, the EPR spectra in solution are typical of a magnetically isolated monomeric Cu(II) centres indicating dissociation of the polymeric chain in solution. The structures of the free ligand, Hmpsme and the {[Cu(mpsme)NO3] center dot 0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) and [Cu(mpsme)NCS](n) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The {[Cu(mpsme)NO3]0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) complex is a centrosymmetric dimer in which each copper atom adopts a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N2OS2 coordination environment, the Schiff base coordinating as a uninegatively charged tridentate ligand chelating through the pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the thiolate, an oxygen atom of a unidentate nitrato ligand and a bridging sulfur atom from the second ligand completing the coordination sphere. The [Cu(mpsme)(NCS)](n) complex has a novel staircase-like one dimensional polymeric structure in which the NCS- ligands bridge two adjacent copper(II) ions asymmetrically in an end-to-end fashion providing its nitrogen atom to one copper and the sulfur atom to the other. The goal set for this work was to synthesize and to characterize new iron and copper complexes with the Schiff base 3-MeOsalen and ligands of biological relevance, whose formulas are [Fe(3-MeOsalen)NO2], [Fe(3-MeOsalen)(etil2-dtc)], [Fe(3-MeOsalen)NO] and Na[Cu(3-MeOsalen)NO2]. The compounds were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy in the infrared region (IV) and Electronic spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and visible region (Uv-Vis). From the analysis of infrared spectra, they proved to formation of precursor complexes, as evidenced by changes in the vibrationals frequencies ν(C=N) e ν(C-O) and the emergence of vibrationals modes metal-oxygen and metal-nitrogen. For nitro complexes of iron and copper were observed ν(NO2)ass around 1300 cm-1 e ν(NO2)sim in 1271 cm-1 , indicating that the coordination is done via the nitrogen atom. The complex spectrum [Fe(3-MeOsalen)(etil2-dtc)] exhibited two bands, the ν(C-NR2) in 1508 cm-1 e ν(C-S) in 997 cm-1 , the relevant vibrational modes of coordinating ligand in the bidentate form. For the complex [Fe(3-MeOsalen)NO] was observed a new intense band in 1670 cm-1 related to the ν(NO). With the electronic spectra, the formation of complexes was evidenced by shifts of bands intraligands transitions and the emergence of new bands such as LMCT (p Cl- d* Fe3+) in [Fe(3-MeOsalen)Cl] and the d-d in [Cu(3-MeOsalen)H2O]. As for the [Fe(3-MeOsalen)NO2] has highlighted the absence of LMCT band present in the precursor complex as for the [Cu(3-MeOsalen)NO2] found that the displacement of the band hipsocrômico d-d on 28 nm. The electronic spectrum of [Fe(3-MeOsalen)(etil2-dtc)] presented LMCT band shifts and changes in intraligantes transitions. With regard to [Fe(3-MeOsalen)NO], revealed a more energetic transitions intraligands regions from the strong character π receiver NO and MLCT band of transition dπFe(II)π*(NO).

Antipyrine is a well known ligand for lanthanides (I). A forage through the organic literature of pyrazolones reveals that the 4-position of antipyrine is amenable to a wide variety of organic reactions. It should thus be possible to introduce suitable functional groups at this position and design new multidentate ligands for metal ions. It is also found that the coordination chemistry of lanthanides is much less well developed and far fewer ligands have been used for complexation with lanthanide ions compared to that of the d-transition metal ions. Keeping these points in view we have reported earlier, complexes of lanthanides with a bidentate ligand N,N-diethyl-antipyrine-4-carboxamide (2). In this communication we report the synthesis of two new ligands from Schiff base condensation of antipyraldehyde and the hydrazides of acetic and benzoic acids and the complexes formed by these hydrazones with lanthanide perchlorates.

Transition metal [Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)] complexes of a new Schiff base, 3-acetylcoumarin-o-aminobenzoylhydrazone were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral [Electronic, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, EPR] and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 9.201(5), b = 16.596( 9), c = 11.517(6) angstrom, beta= 101.388(9)degrees, V = 1724.2 (17) angstrom(3) and Z = 4. Conductivity measurements indicated Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes to be 1 : 1 electrolytes whereas Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes are non-electrolytes. Electronic spectra reveal that all the complexes possess four-coordinate geometry around the metal.

A macrocyclic hydrazone Schiff base was synthesized by reacting 1,4-dicarbonyl phenyl dihydrazide with 2,6-diformyl-4-methyl phenol and a series of metal complexes with this new Schiff base were synthesized by reaction with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal salts. The Schiff base and its complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1 NMR, UV-vis, FAB mass, ESR spectra, fluorescence, thermal, magnetic and molar conductance data. The analytical data reveal that the Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes possess 2:1 metal-ligand ratios. All the complexes are non-electrolytes in DMF and DMSO due to their low molar conductance values. Infrared spectral data suggest that the hydrazone Schiff base behaves as a hexadentate ligand with NON NON donor sequence towards the metal ions. The ESR spectral data shows that the metal-ligand bond has considerable covalent character. The electrochemical behavior of the copper(II) complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The Schiff base and its complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysentery, Micrococcus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and antifungal activities (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium and Candida albicans) by MIC method. The brine shrimp bioassay was also carried out to study their in-vitro cytotoxic properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
