Noxious Weed Management: A Review of Herbicide Use at Colorado State Parks

Weed control in recreation areas is a complex public land management issue. Colorado State Parks are managed for both recreation and conservation, which often conflict. Noxious weeds affect both recreation and conservation efforts, and Parks often use herbicides to control these weeds. While herbicides are effective, they can be harmful to the environment and human health. Herbicide use at State Parks was reviewed to determine if chemical control is effective, safe, and efficient. The results revealed that many Parks are not using effective herbicides to treat noxious weeds and that some weed management plans lack pertinent information on chemical control. The results and recommendations provided can be used to improve the success of noxious weed control and create healthier Parks.

Managing Recreational Impacts on the Northeast corner of the Lake Fayetteville Nature Trail in Fayetteville, AR

Increased population growth of the Northwest Corner of Arkansas is straining the natural resources of the Lake Fayetteville Nature Trail, Fayetteville, AR. Recreational activities conducted on this single track multi-use trail are mountain biking, walking, jogging and wildlife viewing. Impacts evident on the NE section of the trail consist of erosion, vegetation, wildlife and conflict disturbances. Throughout this paper recommendations of management solutions and maintenance ideas are presented. Control of recreation impacts will help the longevity of the trail and maintain the aesthetics for present and future trail users.

It was originally published in the Report of the Board of Metropolitan Park Commissioners, Jan. 1899 to "accompany report of Olmsted Brothers, Landscape Architects, Dec. 1st, 1898." Scale 1:62,500. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001).
