China's rising Soft Power: the role of rhetoric in constructing China-Africa relations

As China turns increasingly to the cultivation of soft power in the course of developing its foreign policy, the use of political rhetoric and its explicit and implicit audiences become more and more important, both on a bilateral level and within the international arena at large. Using the case of China's relations with African countries, this article examines key themes within China's diplomatic narrative regarding its role on the African continent and contrasts with Western and African responses.

Japan and India: soft balancing as a reaction to China's rise?

What are Indian and Japanese reactions to China's rise in economic, political and military terms? According to realist tradition, their option would be between balancing and bandwagoning. Applying Stephen Walt's balance of threats approach, this work aims to analyze Indian and Japan responses to an increasingly powerful China; its conclusions point to an evolving relationship between India and Japan, in military terms, especially after 2005.

Brazil, China, US: a triangular relation?

This article is divided in three sections. The first one explores the so-called "strategic partnership" between Brazil and China. In the second section we shall examine how US-China relations in the global system could affect both Brazil-US, and Brazil-China bilateral relations. A final section presents some recommendations for Brazil strategic orientations regarding the current systemic transition in the allotment of global power.

China's proposing behavior in Global Governance: the cases of the WTO Doha Round negotiation and G-20 process

This article examines China's proposals on the reform of global governance, and discusses the main features of China's proposing behavior in the cases of the WTO Doha Round negotiation and G-20 Process. The main findings are: (1) in the critical junctures of global governance reform, China engaged the reform of the global governance institutions proactively, and put forward a series of reform proposals; (2) in proposing behavior, China argued the global governance institutions should be properly adjusted without intention to change the basic principles, refrained from playing a leadership role while proposing jointly with other countries, and upheld the principled idea of pro-development.

Between system maker and privileges taker: the role of China in the Greater Mekong Sub-region

Utilizing China's leadership projects in the Great Mekong Sub-Region (GMS) as a case study, this paper aims to investigate whether China qualifies as an international leader. This work argues that its geographic position and economic rise allow China to be a "system maker and privilege taker," which is a dual role forming in economic-political relations in the GMS in the last ten years. China is among major driving forces to set up an economic zone in GMS. Growing Chinese regional power is intimately related to the creation of various hubs connecting regional transportation, communication and energy systems that foster the economic development of this region. However, China also proves dark sides of rising powers which take advantage of their privileges to gain benefits. As a "system maker" with its own position and capability, China has notably benefited from building hydropower systems. More importantly, while China is pursuing its benefits and privileges, its hydropower projects have caused some negative effects for the ecosystem in the region. The inflation of dam constructions in both China and GMS countries is raising concerns about using natural resources of the Mekong River. Our concluding part addresses the pressing need to start a serious discussion on the balance between national interests and regional solidarity within the formulation of Chinese foreign policy in GMS.

The tale of a Trojan horse or the quest for market access? China and the World Trade Organization

In 2001, China finally joined the WTO. The accession of China was looked forward to by many WTO members and China itself. However, observers had some fears that the Chinese accession would prove to be a Trojan horse, disrupting the working of the WTO. This paper looks into the Chinese accession and its involvement in the WTO Dispute Settlement and argues that these fears seem so far to be unfounded.

Macau in China's relations with the lusophone world

After the transfer of the Portuguese administration to China, Macau kept its role as a bridge between East and West, inspired in the Portuguese settlement 500 years ago. The pragmatism of the Chinese central government, using the Lusophone specificities of this Special Administrative Region, supported the creation of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, reviving the statute of the Portuguese language and culture in its own territory.

Muddle or march: China and the 21st century Concert of Powers

Concert of Powers has emerged as an attractive modality in global governance. As an emerging power, China must seriously take this template into account. This article seeks to analyze the incentives, possibilities, and uncertainties for China to participate in Concert with reference to China's history memory on Concert, China's intellectual endeavors, as well as China's evolving foreign preferences. It concludes that China is generally qualified and capable of being a key participant in Concert of Powers with increasing willingness. Yet, China's involvement depends on 1) if Concert template can overcome its own deficiencies; 2) if Concert have competitive advantages compared with other governance alternatives for China; and 3) if China can keep its momentum on both willingness and capacity in power transition.

Identificação das categorias mais relevantes da classificação internacional de funcionalidade, incapacidade e saúde para os terapeutas ocupacionais que exercem funções em unidades de cuidados continuados integrados

As constantes alterações das realidades sociais e epidemiológicas em associação ao envelhecimento populacional conduziram a insuficiências dos Sistemas Social e de Saúde que requerem uma reestruturação ao nível da adequação dos cuidados de saúde a prestar, pelo que, em resposta a esta necessidade foi criada a Rede Nacional de Cuidados Continuados Integrados. O presente estudo, de natureza qualitativa e carácter exploratório, tem como objectivo compreender a percepção dos Terapeutas Ocupacionais que trabalham em Unidades de Cuidados Continuados Integrados relativamente às categorias que considerem mais relevantes da Classificação Internacional da Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde, tendo sido aplicada uma entrevista a 8 profissionais a exercer funções em Unidades da Zona Norte, resultante de um processo de amostragem não probabilística e de conveniência. Como método de recolha de dados foi aplicada uma entrevista semi-estruturada, cujo guião foi construído após revisão bibliográfica, tendo por base as categorias definidas pelo modelo da Classificação Internacional da Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde e, posteriormente, analisado por um painel de peritos, tendo-se procedido à realização de uma entrevista piloto a um elemento, sem que esta contasse para a análise. A partir da análise das entrevistas realizadas procedemos à identificação das unidades de significado, tendo os conceitos sido ligados às categorias da Classificação que o representam de uma forma mais adequada, de acordo com as linking rules, tendo sido identificadas as categorias mais relevantes para os Terapeutas Ocupacionais a exercer funções em Unidades de Cuidados Continuados Integrados. Com a realização deste estudo, que pretende ser um primeiro passo para a criação de um futuro Core Set em Cuidados Continuados, foi-nos possível verificar que o maior número de categorias foram observadas no componente Actividades e Participação, tendo sido contabilizadas 70 (40,7%). Por outro lado, o componente Estruturas do corpo é o que integra menor número, contando com 19 categorias (11,05%). Assim, pensamos que a criação de um Core Set em Cuidados Continuados poderá beneficiar e facilitar a comunicação entre os profissionais destas equipas. No entanto, é importante ressalvar que a terminologia desta Classificação deverá ser utilizada de uma forma concertada com a linguagem específica da Terapia Ocupacional. O poder e a moda vestimentar

Nas mutações da moda, sendo também Influenciadas por acontecimentos políticos e espirituais, é a acção condicionante de certos indivíduos que é determinante. Limitando-se ao campo do vestuário, investigação das interferências, proporcionais à força dos regimes, do poder sobre a moda, tanto pela lei como pelo exemplo; desde a corte do Duque de Borgonha às legislações sumptuárias e ao caso paradigmático de Luís XIV, até à China de Mao, referindo casos da sociedade portuguesa. ABSTRACT - Mutations in fashion are influenced by the action of certain people. The research is limited to the field of clothing, the connections between power and fashion, both by law and by example, from the court of the Duke of Burgundy to the laws that restraint luxury, and the paradigmatic study cases of Louis XIV and the China under the rule of Mao Tse Tung. Some cases of the Portuguese society are also referred.
