Um novo método, simples e sensível para a determinação de arsênio em solo é proposto neste trabalho. Este método é baseado na redução de prata (I) e ferro (III) pela arsina seguida da reação de complexação do ferro (II) com o reagente espectrofotométrico 2-(5-bromo-2-piridilazo)-5-di-etilaminofenol (Br-PADAP). A determinação de arsênio apresentou uma sensitividade de Sandell de 3.1x10-4 cm-2, foi linear na faixa de 0.1 µg ml-1 to 2.0 µg ml-1 (r560 = 0.9995), apresentou uma absortividade molar de 2.45x105 l mol-1 cm-1 e um limite de detecção de 1.4 ng ml-1 (3s) estes dados foram obtidos para 10 ml de amostra. A seletividade foi melhorada com o uso de EDTA com agente mascarante. O método proposto foi aplicado na determinação do arsênio na presença de outros íons e em amostras de solo. Os resultados revelaram que antimônio (III), mercúrio (II), germânio (IV), platina (IV) interferem na análise em todas as proporções analisadas. As interferências podem ser facilmente removidas pelo uso do EDTA. A precisão e a exatidão deram resultados satisfatórios, com desvio padrão relativo abaixo de 5%. As recuperações de arsênio em solo variaram de 95,55 a 102,70% com uma média de 99,63%. Estes resultados demonstraram que o método proposto é aplicável para a análise do arsênio em diferentes amostras de solo.

No presente trabalho descreve-se o método para determinação de arsênio, antimônio e bismuto em materiais geológicos, utilizando a geração de hidretos acoplado ao ICP-OES, que proporciona a determinação, com exatidão, dos elementos de interesse em concentrações abaixo de 1 ppm. O método é sensível e, por isso, está sujeito a interferências, como as causadas por elementos presentes na matriz. Desenvolveu-se uma técnica de dissolução eficiente e foram realizados diversos tratamentos com dopagens de soluções-padrão e testes com o uso de tiouréia e iodeto de potássio com ácido ascórbico em diferentes concentrações, com o objetivo de minimizar possíveis interferências presentes na matriz. Os resultados finais, mediante a dissolução de material geológico de referência internacional na determinação de arsênio, bismuto e antimônio, mostraram recuperações superiores à 97% em amostras com concentrações abaixo de 1 ppm.

This work presents experimental results of some physical properties of antimony phosphate glasses with compositions (x) Sb2O3 - (1-x) P2O5 (x = 0.75, 0.85, 0.90). Mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties were investigated: density, elastic moduli (Young's moduli and Poisson's ratio), Vickers microhardness, coefficient of thermal expansion, glass transition temperature, refractive index and electrical conductivity (for x = 0.75). There was no evidence of electronic conductivity by bipolaron hopping. Measurements of energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that volatilization of Sb2O3 takes place during the glass melting

This work describes the synthesis of highly conducting antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanocrystals prepared via a nonaqueous sol–gel route in the size range of 4–6 nm and provides insights into its electrical properties. The antimony composition was varied from 1 to 18 mol% and the lowest resistivity (4.0 × 10−4Ω·cm) was observed at room temperature in the SnO2:8.8 mol% Sb composition. The samples were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope, and resistivity measurements were taken in the four-probe mode in the temperature range of 13–300 K. The results show highly crystalline nanoparticles in a monodisperse colloidal system, dependence on the shape of ATO nanoparticles as a function of Sb distribution, low resistivity, and semiconductor–metal transition.

Infections by protozoans of the genus Leishmania are the major worldwide health problem, with high endemicity in developing countries. The drugs of choice for the treatment of leishmaniasis are the pentavalent antimonials, which exert renal and cardiac toxicity. Thus, there is a strong need for safer and more effective treatments against leishmaniasis. The present study was designated to evaluate, by a bioguided assay, the leishmanicidal activity of hidro-ethanolic extracts from different parts (leves, caule and root) of one same plant the Arrabidaea brachypoda (DC.) Bureau. Its has been used to relieve general pain, painful joints and kidney stones in Brazilian folk medicine. Nevertheless, scientific information regarding this species is scarce; there are no reports related to its possible leishmanicidal activity. The leves extract presented the best activity on promastigotes forms of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis, when compared to the other extracts. It showed significant activity on Leishmania (L.) amazonensis. Our results are promising, showing that these compounds are biologically active on Leishmania (L.) amazonensis.

There is no vaccine available against leishmaniasis. Drug resistance, variable efficacy, toxicity, parenteral administration, and requirement for long courses of administration are the main drawbacks of current leishmanicidal drugs. Infections by protozoans of the genus Leishmania are the major worldwide health problem, with high endemicity in developing countries. We have used the periodic quantum-mechanical method with density functional theory at the B3LYP hybrid functional level in order to study the doping of SnO2 with pentavalent Sb5+. The 72-atom 2x3x2 supercell SnO2 (Sn24O48) was employed in the calculations. For the SnO2:4%Sb , one atom of Sn was replaced by one Sb atom. For the SnO2:8%Sb, two atoms of Sn were replaced by two Sb atoms. The Sb doping leads to an enhancement in the electrical conductivity of this material, because these ions substitute Sn4+ in the SnO2 matrix, leading to an electronic density rise in the conduction band, due to the donor-like behavior of the doping atom. This result shows that the bandgap magnitude depends on the doping concentration, because the energy value found for SnO2:4%Sb was 2.8eV whereas for SnO2:8%Sb it was 2.7eV. Electrochemical lead analyses of gunshot residues (GSRs) were performed using an acidic solution with a bare gold microelectrode in the presence of chloride ions. GSRs from four different guns (0.38 in. revolver, 12 caliber pump-action shotgun, 0.38 repeating rifle, and a 0.22 caliber semi-automatic rifle) and six different types of ammunition (CleanRange (R), normal, semi-jacketed, especial 24g (R), 3T (R), CBC (R), and Eley (R)) were analyzed. Results obtained with the proposed methodology were compared with those from an atomic absorption spectrometry analysis, and a paired Student's t-test indicated that there was no significant difference between them at the 95% confidence level. With this methodology, a detection limit of 1.7 nmol L-1 (3 sigma/slope), a linear range between 10 and 100 nmol L-1, and a relative standard deviation of 2.5% from 10 measurements were obtained. Food safety is a global concern. Meat represents the most important protein source for humans. Thus, contamination of meat products by nonessential elements is a ready source of human exposure. In addition, knowledge of the concentration of essential elements is also relevant with respect to human nutrition. The aim of the present study was to determine the concentration of 17 elements in pork, beef, and chicken produced in Brazil. Meat samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The estimated daily intake for nonessential elements including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and antimony (Sb) through meat consumption is below the toxicological reference values. However, high levels were detected for the nonessential element cesium (Cs), mainly in beef samples, an observation that deserves future studies to identify the source of contamination and potential adverse consequences.
