An Analysis of English, Spanish and Basque Demonstratives in Narrative: a Matter of Viewpoint

[EN]This paper undertakes the study of the occurrence of non-corresponding demonstrative forms in Spanish, Basque and English in exactly the same linguistic context. It is proposed that the differenccs in the choice of the demonstratives result from the differences in the kind of iniormation that must be coded in each of the languages. Thus, I will argue that in Spanish and Basque the obligatory coding of the aspectual categories of the imperfect and the preterit has the function of imposing specific viewing arrangements onto the situations they designate. By contrast, in English, where the aspectual distinction is not overtly coded, the demonstrativcs are proposed to fulfil this function.

An early-warning system for TNE

This report for Jisc1 is based on feedback from the UK higher education (HE) sector on current (2014) transnational education (TNE) activities and future plans, including the locations of such activity. The exercise includes feedback on current and future TNE delivery modes. It is further based on feedback of a more technical nature, for example, on what the network is used for in TNE and how such IT operations are managed abroad. The resulting narrative is a synthesis of these two distinct voices from within UK higher education institutions (HEIs).

Eavan Boland and Paula Meehan : Irish voices of the past

History, myth, exile, identity—for generations those have been the themes of Irish poetry, an Irish poetry written almost exclusively by male poets. As women moved in to claim a voice the themes were often the same, though reworked in essential ways. The key to that reworking, the pivot for an Irish women’s poetry, was the development of a female poetic identity. Eavan Boland led the way. In particular, Boland’s struggles as the first prominent female poet of modern Irish Literature emphasize a search for self-identity. At the forefront of this movement and a precedent for those around her, she establishes themes that pave the way for Irish women writers. With Boland, comes a hopeful recovery of the contemporary female literary experience, with the perspective and approach towards self-identity endlessly evolving over time with each new poet. Inspired by Boland, but a generation younger, Paula Meehan explores similar themes of female constraint, yet raises her own distinctive concerns, in particular the division of male and female roles and generational conflict, exploring what is real and ordinary.

Na sala de espelhos a questão da identidade autoral a partir da figura do duplo em Budapeste e Vom Dorf

A problemática da autoria tem ganhado uma nova roupagem na contemporaneidade. Não se pode mais reconhecer o poder e a influência que o autor outrora exercia sobre suas produções artísticas, pois a sua identidade como tal se confunde com a da "pessoa real". Essa questão da identidade autoral será discutida e problematizada através da figura do duplo. O tema do duplo, tão caro à história da literatura será então empregado como elemento desconstrutor da figura do autor. Esse deixará de ser aquele que carrega consigo uma série de expectativas e juízos de valor com relação ao conjunto de suas produções, dando lugar ao um outro - o duplo -, estranho ao leitor. Assim, cabe a questão do que restará quando a marca do autor for esvaziada, quantas serão as vozes que abrirão caminho ao discurso narrativo e o que irá caracterizar a figura do autor contemporâneo. São estas as questões que impulsionaram a redação da presente dissertação. Neste trabalho será analisada a questão da autoria e da identidade a partir da figura do duplo em dois romances contemporâneos, a saber: Budapeste de Chico Buarque de Hollanda e Vom Dorf de Antje Rávic Strubel. A escolha de um romance brasileiro e de outro alemão visa explicitar que a problemática da autoria é uma questão atual e que encontra expressão em diferentes contextos literários, como o alemão e o brasileiro. A questão é complexa e encontra desdobramentos nas novas formas de comunicação e tem relação direta com o processo de globalização. Iremos fazer um recorte transversal abordando a história do desenvolvimento do duplo na literatura, suas origens, os romances nos quais se manifestam suas diferentes expressões. Em seguida adentraremos o terreno movediço da problemática da identidade sempre tendo como foco a visão diacrônica da questão e em por fim apresentaremos a constituição histórica da figura do autor e suas implicações para a crítica literária. Tecer cotidianos, tecendo rebeldias : narrativas femininas sobre EJA

Esta dissertação surgiu a partir do desejo de contar a minha experiência como professora de Educação de Jovens e Adultos, como eu a vivi, o que aprendi e o que ainda quero descobrir. É nesta medida que, através deste trabalho, pesquisei e ouvi os relatos dos professores, pensando em suas práticas cotidianas, suas subjetividades e suas relações com os conteúdos escolares e com os saberes dos alunos, buscando identificar práticas emancipatórias em seus processos educativos cotidianos. As vozes dos alunos, tornam-se audíveis também, através das narrativas de suas vivências, que permitem, também, identificar atividades emancipatórias em meio aos seus processos de aprendizagem. Narrativas de alunos e narrativas de professores se entrelaçam criando uma trama da memória cotidiana, sobre a qual Nilda Alves (2008) chama a atenção por ser uma narrativa não linear e sujeita a diversas interrupções e introduções de outras histórias paralelas. Dessa forma, busquei fazer um entrelaçamento entre narrativas de professores e alunos, procurando tecer uma rede a partir da narrativa da vida e da literaturização da ciência.

Nous sommes tousjours au dela : a negação narrative do sujeito modern em Sur des vers de Virgile (ensaios III, cap.V) de Michel de Motaigne

Investigando a apresentação das ideias em Sobre versos de Virgílio, a tese demonstra como sua estruturação ambígua, onde tudo é constantemente negado por seus contrários, leva a um contínuo estado de confusão e perplexidade, tornando impossível a determinação lógica dos conceitos e conduzindo a um progressivo esvaziamento do texto enquanto signo direto do pensamento do autor. Por outro lado, partindo de uma perspectiva hermenêutica influenciada pela anatomia, a análise mostra que o uso sistemático e criativo das instâncias narrativas (autor, narrador, signatário), juntamente com a reunificação textual de diferentes Montaignes (presentes nos diversos estágio editoriais do ensaio), acaba por dissolver a própria noção de identidade a si do autor, tendo por consequência imediata sua disseminação em vários sujeitos diversos e contraditórios e, por fim, colocando em xeque a clássica percepção dos Ensaios com o nascimento da subjetividade moderna.

Health-Related Quality of Life for individuals with hepatitis C: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND The assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in hepatitis C (HCV) infected individuals continues to gain importance. However, rarely do reviews of this literature consider quantitative and qualitative accounts of HRQoL collectively, which only allows partial insight into the topic. This narrative review aims to address this gap in the literature. METHODS Literature searches were conducted using seven databases with two separate search strategies, and results assessed for eligibility using specific inclusion/exclusion criteria; a data extraction sheet was used to identify the dominant themes for each research paradigm which were then distilled to key findings to construct the narrative. RESULTS Quantitative investigation reveals a low HRQoL in individuals with HCV due to a complex multifactorial cause. During treatment for HCV, a further transient reduction is observed, followed by improvement if a sustained virological response is achieved. Qualitative data provide a recognisable voice to the everyday challenges experienced by individuals with HCV including insights into diagnosis and stigmatisation, contextualising how a reduced HRQoL is experienced day-to-day. Methodological limitations of these findings are then discussed. Much of the quantitative data has little relevance to current substance users as they are excluded from most trials, and appraisal of the qualitative literature reveals a marked difference in the lived experience of HCV infected current substance users and that of other HCV groups. CONCLUSION Concurrent analysis of quantitative and qualitative paradigms provides a deeper understanding of the true burden of HCV illness on HRQoL. Greater utilisation of qualitative research within international clinical guidelines is likely to be of benefit in identifying relevant HRQoL outcomes for substance users.
