A time multiplexed rectangular Zernike modal wavefront sensor based on a nematic phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator and specially designed for a high power two-electrode tapered laser diode which is a compact and novel free space optical communication source is used in an adaptive beam steering free space optical communication system, enabling the system to have 1.25 GHz modulation bandwidth, 4.6° angular coverage and the capability of sensing aberrations within the system and caused by atmosphere turbulence up to absolute value of 0.15 waves amplitude and correcting them in one correction cycle. Closed-loop aberration correction algorithm can be implemented to provide convergence for larger and time varying aberrations. Improvement of the system signal-to-noise-ratio performance is achieved by aberration correction. To our knowledge, it is first time to use rectangular orthonormal Zernike polynomials to represent balanced aberrations for high power rectangular laser beam in practice. © 2014 IEEE.

This article contains a review of modal stability theory. It covers local stability analysis of parallel flows including temporal stability, spatial stability, phase velocity, group velocity, spatio-temporal stability, the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, the Orr-Sommerfeld equation, the Rayleigh equation, the Briggs-Bers criterion, Poiseuille flow, free shear flows, and secondary modal instability. It also covers the parabolized stability equation (PSE), temporal and spatial biglobal theory, 2D eigenvalue problems, 3D eigenvalue problems, spectral collocation methods, and other numerical solution methods. Computer codes are provided for tutorials described in the article. These tutorials cover the main topics of the article and can be adapted to form the basis of research codes. For more dexterous and agile legged robot locomotion, alternative actuation has been one of the most long-awaited technologies. The goal of this paper is to investigate the use of newly developed actuator, the so-called Linear Multi-Modal Actuator (LMMA), in the context of legged robot locomotion, and analyze the behavioral performance of it. The LMMA consists of three discrete couplings which enable the system to switch between different mechanical dynamics such as instantaneous switches between series elastic and fully actuated dynamics. To test this actuator for legged locomotion, this paper introduces a one-legged robot platform we developed to implement the actuator, and explains a novel control strategy for hopping, i.e. 'preloaded hopping control'. This control strategy takes advantage of the coupling mechanism of the LMMA to preload the series elasticity during the flight phase to improve the energy efficiency of hopping locomotion. This paper shows a series of experimental results that compare the control strategy with a simple sinusoidal actuation strategy to discuss the benefits and challenges of the proposed approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Due to technological limitations robot actuators are often designed for specific tasks with narrow performance goals, whereas a wide range of output and behaviours is necessary for robots to operate autonomously in uncertain complex environments. We present a design framework that employs dynamic couplings in the form of brakes and clutches to increase the performance and diversity of linear actuators. The couplings are used to switch between a diverse range of discrete modes of operation within a single actuator. We also provide a design solution for miniaturized couplings that use dry friction to produce rapid switching and high braking forces. The couplings are designed so that once engaged or disengaged no extra energy is consumed. We apply the design framework and coupling design to a linear series elastic actuator (SEA) and show that this relatively simple implementation increases the performance and adds new behaviours to the standard design. Through a number of performance tests we are able to show rapid switching between a high and a low impedance output mode; that the actuator's spring can be charged to produce short bursts of high output power; and that the actuator has additional passive and rigid modes that consume no power once activated. Robots using actuators from this design framework would see a vast increase in their behavioural diversity and improvements in their performance not yet possible with conventional actuator design. © 2012 IEEE.

Mode behaviour for SOI slot waveguides is modelled and analysed using a numerical full vectorial method based on the film mode matching method (MMM). Only the quasi-TE mode is investigated. Waveguide heights and slot widths, as well as silicon widths are properly chosen with respect to the single mode behaviour in the slot region. Comparison between the effective index method and our side loss method shows that our single mode condition is creditable. The optical power confinement in slot region for the quasi-TE mode is also studied and presented. We demonstrate that the maximum achievable optical power confinement P-slot and the maximum normalized average optical intensity I-slot are 42% and 26 mu m(-2), respectively.

We report an experimental and theoretical study of maximum modal gain of p-doped 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) lasers. The maximum modal gain of the QD laser with five stacks of QDs is as high as 17.5 cm(-1) which is the same as that of the undoped laser with identical structures. The expression of the maximum modal gain is derived and it is indicated that p-doping has no effect to the maximum modal gain. We theoretically calculated the maximum modal gain of the QD lasers and the result is in a good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, QDs with lower height or smaller aspect ratio are beneficial to achieving a greater maximum modal gain that leads to lower threshold current density and higher differential modal gain, which is good for the application of p-doped 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs QD lasers in optical communications systems.

A photonic crystal nanolaser consisting of only the shift of two lattice points was fabricated by HJ/Xe inductively coupled plasma etching. The room temperature lasing was observed by photopumping. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain calculation showed that the lasing mode has small modal volume close to (lambda/2n)(3).

The relations between the gain factor, defined as the ratio of modal gain to material gain, and the optical confinement factor are discussed for the TE and TM modes in slab waveguides. For the TE modes, the gain factor is larger than the optical confinement factor, due to the zigzag propagation of the modal light ray in the core layers. For the TM modes, the existence of a nonzero electric field in the propagation direction results in a more complicated relation of the gain factor and the confinement factor. For an air-Si-SiO2 strong slab waveguide, the numerical results show that the modal gain can be larger than the material gain and the higher-order transverse mode can have an even larger modal gain than the fundamental mode, The efficiency of waveguiding photodetectors can be improved by applying the modal gain or loss characteristics in strong waveguides.

The pressure behaviour of In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) has been studied at 15 K in the pressure range of 0-1.3 GPa. The atomic force microscopy image shows that the QDs have a multi-modal distribution in size. Three emission peaks were observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, corresponding to the different QD families. The measured pressure coefficients are 82, 93 and 98 meV GPa(-1) for QDs with average lateral size of 26, 52 and 62 nm, respectively. The pressure coefficient of small QDs is about 17% smaller than that of bulk In0.55Al0.45As An envelope-function calculation was used to analyse the effect of pressure-induced change of barrier height, effective mass and dot size on the pressure coefficients of QDs. The Gamma-X state mixing was also included in the evaluation of the reduction of the pressure coefficients. The results indicate that both the pressure-induced increase of effective mass and Gamma-X mixing respond to the decrease of pressure coefficients, and the Gamma-X mixing is more important for small dots. The calculated Gamma-X interaction potentials are 15 and 10 meV for QDs with lateral size of 26 and 52 nm, respectively. A type-II alignment for the X conduction band is suggested according to the pressure dependence of the PL intensities. The valence-band offset was then estimated as 0.15 +/- 0.02.

A theoretical study of modal gain in p-doped 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) lasers is presented. The expression of modal gain is derived, which includes an effective ratio that describes how many QDs contribute to the modal gain. The calculated results indicate that the modal gain with the effective ratio is much smaller than that without the effective ratio. The calculated maximum modal gain is is a good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, QDs with lower height or smaller aspect ratio are beneficial in achieving a larger maximum modal gain that leads to lower threshold current density and higher differential modal gain.
