Nanostrucured europium oxide and hydroxide films were obtained by pulsed Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser ablation of a europium metallic target, in the presence of a 1 mbar helium buffer atmosphere. Both the produced film and the ambient plasma were characterized. The plasma was monitored by an electrostatic probe, for plume expansion in vacuum or in the presence of the buffer atmosphere. The time evolution of the ion saturation current was obtained for several probe to substrate distances. The results show the splitting of the plume into two velocity groups, being the lower velocity profile associated with metal cluster formation within the plume. The films were obtained in the presence of helium atmosphere, for several target-to-substrate distances. They were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, for as-deposited and 600 degrees C treated-in-air samples. The results show that the as-deposited samples are amorphous and have chemical composition compatible with europium hydroxide. The thermally treated samples show x-ray diffraction peaks of Eu(2)O(3), with chemical composition showing excess oxygen. Film nanostructuring was shown to be strongly correlated with cluster formation, as shown by velocity splitting in probe current versus time plots. (C) 2010 American Vacuum Society. High-energy nuclear collisions create an energy density similar to that of the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang(1); in both cases, matter and antimatter are formed with comparable abundance. However, the relatively short-lived expansion in nuclear collisions allows antimatter to decouple quickly from matter, and avoid annihilation. Thus, a high-energy accelerator of heavy nuclei provides an efficient means of producing and studying antimatter. The antimatter helium-4 nucleus ((4)(He) over bar), also known as the anti-alpha ((alpha) over bar), consists of two antiprotons and two antineutrons (baryon number B = -4). It has not been observed previously, although the alpha-particle was identified a century ago by Rutherford and is present in cosmic radiation at the ten per cent level(2). Antimatter nuclei with B -1 have been observed only as rare products of interactions at particle accelerators, where the rate of antinucleus production in high-energy collisions decreases by a factor of about 1,000 with each additional antinucleon(3-5). Here we report the observation of (4)<(He) over bar, the heaviest observed antinucleus to date. In total, 18 (4)(He) over bar counts were detected at the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC; ref. 6) in 10(9) recorded gold-on-gold (Au+Au) collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 200 GeV and 62 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair. The yield is consistent with expectations from thermodynamic(7) and coalescent nucleosynthesis(8) models, providing an indication of the production rate of even heavier antimatter nuclei and a benchmark for possible future observations of (4)(He) over bar in cosmic radiation.

ZrO(2), gamma-Al(2)O(3) and ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3)-supported copper catalysts have been prepared, each with three different copper loads (1, 2 and 5 wt%), by the impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) with H(2), Raman spectroscopy and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The reduction of NO by CO was studied in a fixed-bed reactor packed with these catalysts and fed with a mixture of 1% CO and 1% NO in helium. The catalyst with 5 wt% copper supported on the ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3) matrix achieved 80% reduction of NO. Approximately the same rate of conversion was obtained on the catalyst with 2 wt% copper on ZrO(2). Characterization of these catalysts indicated that the active copper species for the reduction of NO are those in direct contact with the oxygen vacancies found in ZrO(2). Os níveis de julgamen to dos alunos de 1 2 , 22 e ,:3 2 graus de ensino da Rede de E'sco las Particulares e da ~~ndação Universitária da cidade de Lages - Santa Catari ~a -, é um estudo teórico e de investigação prática, que -pretende verificar e discutir as relações entre a quali~ . dade ou maturidade de julgamento .. ' . e as var~ave~s idade grau de escolaridade, capacidade intelectual e nível só- --ci.o-econômico dos alunos ,sujeitos da pesquisa. A amostra foi sorteada aleatoriamente entre to- dos os alunos da 8! série do 12 grau, 2~' série do 29 grau e 3! série do 3 2 grau, num percentual aproximado de 20% da população total visada. Constituiu-se, assim, uma amos tra de 152 sujeitos, extTa{da de uma população de 898 a~ . . lunos. Os objetivos específicos que orientaram o estu- , ." ... . .' ,.., . do resumem-se na anal~se e discussao das relaçoes entreo nível de julgamento e as demais variáveis, isto é, ida~ de, grau de escolaridade, capacidade intelectual e nível sócio-econômico dos ,alunos pesquisados. Os resultados indicam que: 1) a maioria absolu- , ta dos sujeitos tanto de 12 e 22 graus qcinnto os de .j2 grau não alcançou'os níveis de julgamento mais maduros - ou seja - julgamento imaginativo-explicativo e imaginati vo-explicati vo-compreensi vo.· .2) Os sujei tos revelam -a- centuada dificuldade de raciocínio e julgamento' em ,rela ção ao texto-teste de estrutura lógica. 3) As variáveis' ~dade, grau de escolaridade, nível 56cio~ecortômico rela- ',c~onam-se,. em geral, positivamente com o nível de julga- ~mento, embora, no caso desta pesquisa, essa relação seja :fraca, possivelmente em função da pou.ca dispersão ougra!! de homog'eneic.ade' dos escores obtidos pelos sujeitos. The occurrence of transients in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals indicates an electrical phenomenon outside the heart. Thus, the identification of transients has been the most-used methodology in medical analysis since the invention of the electrocardiograph (device responsible for benchmarking of electrocardiogram signals). There are few papers related to this subject, which compels the creation of an architecture to do the pre-processing of this signal in order to identify transients. This paper proposes a method based on the signal energy of the Hilbert transform of electrocardiogram, being an alternative to methods based on morphology of the signal. This information will determine the creation of frames of the MP-HA protocol responsible for transmitting the ECG signals through an IEEE 802.3 network to a computing device. That, in turn, may perform a process to automatically sort the signal, or to present it to a doctor so that he can do the sorting manually

We show that a scaling limit approach, previously applied in three-body low-energy nuclear physics, is realized for the first excited state of He-4 trimer. The present result suggests that such approach has a wider application.

We present results for medium-energy elastic, inelastic [transition to He(1s2(1)s), He(1s2(1)p), He(1s3(1)s), and He(1s3(1)p) states], capture [to Ps(1s), Ps(2s), and Ps(2p) states of the positronium (Ps) atom] and total cross sections of positron-helium scattering in the close coupling approach using realistic wave functions.

Heart failure (NF) is frequently associated with euthyroid sicksyndrome (low T-3 and elevated rT(3)). We investigated if altered thyroid hormone in HF could affect expression of the TH receptor (TR alpha 1), and alpha and beta myosin heavy chains (alpha-MHC beta-MHC). HF was provoked in rats by aortic stenosis. We showed that rT(3) generated front liver and kidney deiodination significantly increased and T-3 decreased in HE; there was significantly higher TR alpha 1 expression, no alpha-MHC expression, but beta-MHC expression. Changes in TR alpha 1 could be compensating for low T-3 from HF.

In the present work, we report experimental results of He stopping power into Al2O3 films by using both transmission and Rutherford backscattering techniques. We have performed measurements along a wide energy range, from 60 to 3000 key, covering the maximum stopping range. The results of this work are compared with previously published dap-, showing a good agreement for the high-energy range, but evidencing discrepancies in the low-energy region. The existing theories follow the same tendency: good theoretical-experimental agreement for higher energies, but they failed to reproduce previous and present results in the low energy regime. On the other hand it is interesting to note that the semi-empirical SRIM code reproduces quite well the present data. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose a novel mathematical approach for the calculation of near-zero energy states by solving potentials which are isospectral with the original one. For any potential, families of strictly isospectral potentials (with very different shape) having desirable and adjustable features are generated by supersymmetric isospectral formalism. The near-zero energy Efimov state in the original potential is effectively trapped in the deep well of the isospectral family and facilitates more accurate calculation of the Efimov state. Application to the first excited state in He-4 trimer is presented.

Primary lung lymphoma is a rare entity accounting for approximately 0.3% of all primary neoplasia of the lung and includes diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBL) and lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG). Considering that clinical features may be similar, whereas epidemiology, morphology, and radiological features are different, the authors report a case of a middle-aged man who presented multiple pulmonary nodules in the lower lobes and groundglass opacities scattered bilaterally on computed tomography. Clinically, he presented a consumptive syndrome with respiratory failure and pleurisy, which progressed until death. The autopsy findings were consistent with lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) grade 3/ diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBL). The authors call attention to the difficulty of establishing an accurate diagnosis, mainly when the demonstration of EBV-infected atypical B-cells fails.

Die Diagnose und Therapie von neurodegenerativen Krankheiten, wie beispielsweise Morbus Parkinson besitzt in der heutigen Gesellschaft eine immer größere Bedeutung. Über moderne, bild¬gebende nuklear¬medizinische Verfahren wie SPECT und PET ist es mit geeigneten Radioliganden möglich, Morbus Parkinson vor dem Auftreten von Symptomen zu diagnostizieren. Ein wichtiger Ansatzpunkt zur Diagnose von Morbus Parkinson ist die Visualisierung der postsynaptischen Dopamin-Rezeptoren über radioaktiv (11C, 18F, 123I) markierte Benz¬amid-Derivate. Auf Grundlage der (S)-Pyrolidin-2,3-dimethoxy-Benzamid-Struktur des 18F-Liganden Fallypride wurden verschiedene 99mTc-markierte Benzamid-Derivate als potentielle Radio¬liganden zur Parkinson-Diagnostik entwickelt. Um das Potential von Metall-konjugierten Benzamiden abschätzen zu können, wurden zunächst einfache Vergleichssubstanzen entwickelt. Diese sollten die Einführung eines Chelators simulieren und wurden hierfür hinsichtlich ihrer in vitro-Bindungsaffinitäten zu den Dopamin-, Serotonin- und adrenergen Rezeptoren evaluiert. Die zunächst entwickelten Derivate mit unterschiedlichen Kettenlängen zur Kopplung des Chelators zeigten für die Propylkette Affinitäten im nanomolaren Bereich. Im Anschluss sollten basierend auf diesen Ergebnissen vier verschiedene Chelatoren (Carbony-Cyclopentadienyl, Amido-Cyclopentadienyl, 2-Pyridyl-Imin und N2S2) über eine Propylkette an die 5-Position der Benzamidgrundstruktur gekoppelt werden. Die geplante Synthese des Carbonyl-Cyclopentadienyl-Derivates gelang jedoch nicht. Für die weiteren Chelatoren (Amido-Cyclopentadieny, 2-Pyridyl-Imin und N2S2) konnten die jeweiligen Markierungs¬vorläufer und Rhenium-Komplexe dargestellt werden, die ebenfalls hinsichtlich ihrer Bindungs¬affinitäten evaluiert wurden. Die erzielten Affinitäten zeigten, dass eine Über¬tragung der Affinitäten der einfachen Vergleichssubstanzen auf die komplexeren Metall-Benzamide nicht möglich war. Insbesondere der N2S2-Rhenium-Komplex besitzt nur noch geringe Affinität (490 - 900 nM) zu den D2- und D3-Rezeptoren. Die mittel-affinen 2-Pyridyl-Imin- und Amdio¬cyclopentadien-Komplexe wurden mit 99mTc markiert und die Markierungsausbeute hinsichtlich Reaktionstemperatur, Markierungs-vorläuferkonzentration und Heizmethoden optimiert. Dabei konnte der Imin-Komplex quantitativ mittels fac-[99mTc(CO)3(H2O)3]+ in 30 Minuten bei 45°C markiert werden. Der Amido-Cyclopentadien-Komplex konnte über die Umsetzung des Ferrocen-Markierungsvorläufer mit Mn(CO)5Br und [99mTcO4]- in Ausbeuten von bis zu 60 % markiert werden. Im Anschluss an die Markierungen wurden die 99mTc-Komplexe über HPLC isoliert und in in vitro-Auto¬radiographien von Rattenhirnschnitten weiter evaluiert. Die erhaltenen Ergebnisse bestätigten die für die Rhenium-Komplexe erzielten Affinitäten und zeigten keine spezifische Anreicherung in bestimmten Hirnarealen. Aus diesen Ergebnissen kann ge¬schlossen werden, dass die dargestellten 99mTc-Benzamide aufgrund mangelnder Affinitäten und einer hohen unspezifischen Bindung keine geeigneten Liganden zur Darstellung der D2- und D3- Rezeptoren sind. Um die dargestellten 99mTc-Benzamide mit [18F]Fallypride vergleichen zu können, wurde zusätzlich [3H]Fallypride dargestellt. Hierfür wurde zunächst der Nor-Markierungsvor¬läufer synthetisiert und die Markierungsausbeute optimiert. Die finale Umsetzung mit [3H]Methylnosylat ergab nach HPLC-Aufreinigung 15 mCi [3H]Fallypride mit einer radio¬chemischen Reinheit von >99,5 %. Erste Autoradiographien zeigten eine hohe Anreicherung des Liganden im Striatum, verbunden mit einer sehr niedrigen unspezifischen Bindung.
