Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is known to enhance strength properties of paper. Improved strength usually means increased bonding which is strongly connected to dimensional instability of paper. Dimensional instability is due to changes in moisture content of paper; when paper is moistened it expands and when dried, it shrinks. Hygroexpansion is linked to end-use problems and excessive drying shrinkage consumes strength potential. Effective use of materials requires controlling of these phenomena. There isn’t yet data concerning dimensional stability of papers containing MFC which restricts wider use of MFC. Main objective of the work was to evaluate dimensional stability of wood-free paper containing different amounts of MFC. Sheets were dried with different methods to see how drying strains effected on drying shrinkage and hygroexpansion. Also tensile strength was measured to find out the effect of MFC. Results were compared to sheets containing kraft fines and in some test points cationic starch was used alongside with MFC. MFC increased the dimensional instability of freely dried sheets. As the amounts of MFC increased the effects on dimensional stability became more severe. However the fineness of MFC didn’t play any important role. Both hygroexpansion and drying shrinkage were decreased with cationic starch addition. Prevention of drying shrinkage over powered the effects of additives on hygroexpansion. Tensile strength improved up till 7 % addition amount which could be set as the upper limit of MFC addition when paper preparation and tensile strength are concerned.

Aim of this thesis was to design and manufacture a microdistillation column. The literature review part of this thesis covers stainless steels, material processing and basics about engineering design and distillation. The main focus, however, is on the experimental part. Experimental part is divided into five distinct sections: First part is where the device is introduced and separated into three parts. Secondly the device is designed part by part. It consists mostly of detail problem solving, since the first drawings had already been drawn and the critical dimensions decided. Third part is the manufacture, which was not fully completed since the final assembly was left out of this thesis. Fourth part is the test welding for the device, and its analysis. Finally some ideas for further studies are presented. The main goal of this thesis was accomplished. The device only lacks some final assembly but otherwise it is complete. One thing that became clear during the process was how difficult it is to produce small and precise steel parts with conventional manufacturing methods. Internal stresses within steel plates and thermal distortions can easily ruin small steel structures. Designing appropriate welding jigs is an important task for even simple devices. Laser material processing is a promising tool for this kind of steel processing because of the flexibility, good cutting quality and also precise and low heat input when welding. Next step in this project is the final assembly and the actual distillation tests. The tests will be carried out at Helsinki University of Technology.

Suunnanmuutoksia -raporttiin on koottu hankkeen tuloksia sekä aiemmissa Etelä-Karjala-instituutin hankkeissa syntynyttä tietoa. Raportti on tiivis lukupaketti, joka sisältää seitsemän artikkelia maakunnan kannalta keskeisistä aiheista. Jokaisen ytimekkään artikkelin lopussa on toimenpide-ehdotuksia, jotka on laadittu aluekehitystä silmälläpitäen. Raportissa pohditaan kestävän rakennemuutoksen mahdollisuuksia, maakunnan identiteetin ja median suhdetta, Saimaata ja veden merkitystä, yliopiston asemaa maakunnassa, venäläisten maahanmuuttoa ja monikulttuurisuutta, matkailun kehittämistä sekä kulttuurin merkitystä maakunnan hyvinvoinnille. Etelä-Karjalassa on tehty paljon työtä hyvinvoinnin eteen ja kirjoitettu runsaasti erilaisia strategioita. Strategioiden toteuttajia ei tunnu kuitenkaan olevan tarpeeksi. Maakunta on ikään kuin odottavassa tilassa ja toivoo, että jostakin löytyisi veturi, joka tulisi vetämään maakuntaa eteenpäin. Suunnanmuutoksia -raportin kirjoittajat esittävät, etEtelä-Karjalan on aika siirtyä veturin odottamisesta malliin, jossa kaikki toimijat ottavat vastuuta oma-aloitteisina toimijoina. Luovuus ei synny siitä, että yksi vetää muita perässään kohti tiettyä päämäärää, vaan siitä, että kukin toimija ottaa vastuun omasta hyvinvoinnistaan ja kulkee luovasti sitä kohti. Suunnanmuutoksia -raportti päättyy toivomukseen maakunnallisesta flow-ilmiöstä, keskittymisen, osaamisen ja onnistumisen kautta saavutetusta onnellisuuden tunteesta. Sen alkua ja suuntaa on mahdoton ennustaa, mutta aika on kypsä entistä radikaaleimmille innovaatioille. Näiden tekeminen vaatii flowta; halua ja rohkeutta tavoitella jotakin sellaista, joka on arkipäiväisyyden yläpuolella. Raportti on suunnattu kaikille Etelä-Karjalan tulevaisuudesta ja kehittämisestä kiinnostuneille. Raportin kirjoittaneet Etelä-Karjala-instituutin tutkijat toivovat etenkin kuntien päättäjien ja aluekehittäjien ottavan sen työkalukseen.

Contactless integrated circuit cards are one form of application of radio frequency identification. They are used in applications such as access control, identification, and payment in public transport. The contactless IC cards are passive which means that both the data and the energy are transferred to the card without contact using inductive coupling. Antenna design and optimization of the design for contactless IC cards defined by ISO/IEC14443 is studied. The basic operation principles of contactless system are presented and the structure of contactless IC card is illustrated. The structure was divided between the contactless chip and the antenna. The operation of the antenna was covered in depth and the parameters affecting to the performance of the antenna were presented. Also the different antenna technologies and connection technologies were provided. The antenna design process with the parameters and the design tools isillustrated and optimization of the design is studied. To make the design process more ideal a target of development was discovered, which was the implementation of test application. The optimization of the antenna design was presented based on the optimization criteria defined in this study. The solution for the implementation of these criteria and the effect of each criterion was found. For enhancing the performance of the antenna a focus for future study was proposed.
