The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline yttrium orthoferrite was studied from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Magnetization measurements up to 170 kOe were carried out on a single-phase YFeO3 sample synthesized from heterobimetallic alkoxides. The complex interplay between weak-ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, observed in the experimental M(H) curves, was successfully simulated by locally minimizing the magnetic energy of two interacting Fe sublattices. The resulting values of exchange field (H-E = 5590 kOe), anisotropy field (H-A = 0.5 kOe) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric field (H-D = 149 kOe) are in good agreement with previous reports on this system. Ni-Zn ferrites have been widely used in components for high-frequency range applications due to their high electrical resistivity, mechanical strength and chemical stability. Ni-Zn ferrite nanopowders doped with samarium with a nominal composition of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2-xSmxO4 (x = 0.0, 0.05, and 0.1 mol) were obtained by combustion synthesis using nitrates and urea as fuel. The morphological aspects of Ni-Zn-Sm ferrite nanopowders were investigated by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption by BET, sedimentation, scanning electron microscopy and magnetic properties. The results indicated that the Ni-Zn-Sm ferrite nanopowders were composed of soft agglomerates of nanoparticles with a high surface area (55.8-64.8 m(2)/g), smaller particles (18-20 nm) and nanocrystallite size particles. The addition of samarium resulted in a reduction of all the magnetic parameters evaluated, namely saturation magnetization (24-40 emu/g), remanent magnetization (2.2-3.5 emu/g) and coercive force (99.3-83.3 Oe). Magnetic properties of nanocrystalline NiFe(2)O(4) spinel mechanically processed for 350 h have been studied using temperature dependent from both zero-field and in-field (57)Fe Mossbauer spectrometry and magnetization measurements. The hyperfine structure allows us to distinguish two main magnetic contributions: one attributed to the crystalline grain core, which has magnetic properties similar to the NiFe(2)O(4) spinel-like structure (n-NiFe(2)O(4)) and the other one due to the disordered grain boundary region, which presents topological and chemical disorder features(d-NiFe(2)O(4)). Mossbauer spectrometry determines a large fraction for the d-NiFe(2)O(4) region(62% of total area) and also suggests a speromagnet-like structure for it. Under applied magnetic field, the n-NiFe(2)O(4) spins are canted with angle dependent on the applied field magnitude. Mossbauer data also show that even under 120 kOe no magnetic saturation is observed for the two magnetic phases. In addition, the hysteresis loops, recorded for scan field of 50 kOe, are shifted in both field and magnetization axes, for temperatures below about 50 K. The hysteresis loop shifts may be due to two main contributions: the exchange bias field at the d-NiFe(2)O(4)/n-NiFe(2)O(4) interfaces and the minor loop effect caused by a high magnetic anisotropy of the d-NiFe(2)O(4) phase. It has also been shown that the spin configuration of the spin-glass like phase is modified by the consecutive field cycles, consequently the n-NiFe(2)O(4)/d-NiFe(2)O(4) magnetic interaction is also affected in this process. The growth and magnetic properties of Tin Selenide (SnSe) doped with Eu(2+) Sn(1-x)Eu(x)Se (x=2.5%) were investigated. Q-band (34 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance measurements show that the site symmetry of Eu(2+) at 4.2 K is orthorhombic and the Lande factor was determined to be g=1.99 +/- 0.01. The exchange coupling between nearest-neighbor (NN) Eu(2+) ions was estimated from magnetization and magnetic-susceptibility measurements using a model that takes into account the magnetic contributions of single ions, pairs and triplets. The exchange interaction between Eu(2+) nearest neighbors was found to be antiferromagnetic with an estimated average value of J(p)/k(B) =-0.18 +/- 0.03 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. In this work we evaluate the effectiveness of computed tomography images as a tool to determine magnetic nanoparticle biodistribution over biological tissues. For this purpose, tomography images for magnetic nanoparticles, composed of Fe(3)O(4), coated with 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), were generated at several material concentrations. The comparison of CT numbers, calculated from these images generated at clinical conditions, with typical CT numbers for biological tissues, shows that the detection of nanoparticle in most tissues is only possible for high material concentrations. In this work it is reported the magnetic behavior of submicron and mesoscopic-size superconducting YBCO powders, prepared by a modified polymeric precursors method. The grain size and microstructure were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy ( SEM). Measurements of magnetization and AC-susceptibility as a function of temperature were performed with a quantum design SQUID magnetometer. Our results indicated significant differences on the magnetic propreties, in connection with the calcination temperature and the pressure used to pelletize the samples. This contribution is part of an effort to study vortex dynamics and magnetic properties of submicron and mesoscopic-size superconducting samples. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The use of chemical methods in the synthesis of high-quality and small-size polycrystalline samples has been increased in recent years. In this work, a chemical route based on an aqueous precursor solution of metals followed by the addition of a water-soluble polymer formed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethylene glycol (EG) was tested to produce superconducting mesoscopic YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-gamma) samples. Different conditions of heat treatments and the effects of argon and oxygen atmospheres during the calcination steps were traced using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and magnetic measurements. A room temperature ferromagnetic phase is observed in samples of poly(3-hexylthiophene) partially doped with ClO (4) over bar. The magnetic behavior presents a strong dependence on the sample preparation conditions, in particular, a dependence with the final potential of the sample after reduction. The origin of the ferromagnetism is proposed to be associated with interactions between spin 1/2 polarons formed in the polymeric chain upon doping. The dependence of saturation and spontaneous magnetization as the function of the final potential after reduction shows a way to control the magnetic properties of this polymer. The use of AC/DC magnetic susceptibility and impedance measurements to detect oxygen depletion effects in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 +/-delta and NiMn2O4+delta spinel-type compounds is reported. For the NiMn2O4, for which no Mn4+ was found, three superposed Debye relaxations were observed in the range 260-180 K. Otherwise, in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, the argon annealed has contributed to a decrease in T-C, but the amount of Mn4+ is still too high to allow the observation of a relaxation in this frequency window. The effect of the bath pH on the electrodeposition of nanocrystalline Pd-Co alloys and on their magnetic properties was studied. The pH practically did not affect the alloy composition. Conversely, the pH showed a significant influence on the shape and size of crystallites. Two different crystallites morphology were observed depending on the bath pH. A crystallite size ranging from 18.2 to 30 nm was obtained from X-ray diffractometry (XRD) patterns using the Scherrer's method. Also from the XRD patterns the lattice strain percentage was calculated and correlated with the residual stress, which probably originated during the film electrodeposition on the substrate. Some alloy magnetic properties showed small variations. In contrast, high and unexpected coercivities were obtained reaching a maximum of 1.69 kOe at pH 5.5. The high coercivity values were attributed to the presence of residual stress at the film-substrate interface, which increased as the bath pH and crystallite size decrease, both of them contributing simultaneously to increase in coercivity. This work is concerned with the magnetic properties of Ni(NO3)2·2H2O from (Hin-T) and (Hap-T) phase diagrams. From these diagrams we have obtained the values of Hc(0), TN and Tt. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values of Tt is made, where a Tt relation for a spin 1 metamagnetic model is found. © 1988.

The formation of silica on core yttrium iron garnet presents a variety of different applications as corrosion resistance and stabilization of magnetic properties. Well-defined magnetic particles were prepared by heterocoagulating silica on yttrium iron garnet to protect the core. Yttrium iron garnet was obtained using a homogeneous nucleation process by controlling the chemical routes from cation hydrolysis in acid medium. The heterocoagulation was induced by tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis in appropriate yttrium iron garnet dispersion medium. The presence of silica on yttrium iron garnet was characterized by vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, small area electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Spindle-type iron fine particles have been prepared by reduction of silica-coated-hematite particles. Hydrogen reduction of the coated-hematite cores yielded uniform spindle-type iron particles, which were stabilized by surface oxidation. Narrow particle distributions are observed from TEM measurements. X-ray, Mössbauer and magnetization data are in agreement with the presence of nanosized α-Fe particles, having surface layer of spinel structure oxide. Mössbauer spectra show that the oxide surface is superparamagnetic at room temperature. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work, nano-sized magnetic nuclei of Co have been electrodeposited onto p-Si (111). The deposition follows a mechanism of progressive nucleation and growth controlled by diffusion. MFM studies showed that the transition between magnetic domain states is strongly dependent on the size and shape of the nuclei. A critical height h0 is defined below which the nuclei presented always a single-domain configuration. The limiting lower boundary for the single-domain state calculated from the theory is quantitatively coincident with the experimental results. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
