The glassy carbon is a material with a huge technological evolution. Due to its lightness, biocompatibility and their thermal and electrical properties this material finds applications in several industrial fields such as electronics, medical, aerospace and chemical. In order to explore the conductive properties of glassy carbon for use as modified electrodes, the present work aims the processing of monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon with colloidal copper for use in electrochemical applications. First, the best parameters for the cure of furfuryl alcohol resin doped were established through viscosimetry measurements and pressurized differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis of the micrographs of the cured resins show that copper concentrations above 3% weight, generate higher porosity in the material. The characterizations of the monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon resulting from carbonization were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and although it was not possible to detect the presence of copper by SEM, the influence of these particles have been observed by Raman and FT-IR spectra and electrochemical behavior of the material. The decrease in conductivity of monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon in the presence of copper may be related to the defects caused by the presence of copper in the structure of the material.

Once petroleum is na exhaustible source of energy, alternative fuels are having more prominence. A much discussed option for replacing fossil fuels is the use of biofuels derived from oils or fats, especially biodiesel. The biodiesel preparation is through a reaction named transesterification, a reaction of triglycerides with a short chain alcohol with a catalyst, producing a mixture of fatty acid esters and glycerol. According to ANP (National Petroleum Agency) specifications, biodiesel can have contaminants due to the catalyst or oil used on its synthesis, such as phosphorus, wich can damage the catalytic converter and cause significant increase in the particles emission. This project aims to develop na alternative method using chemically modified electrodes with iron nanoparticles for determination of phosphorus in biodiesel. For the formation of the iron nanoparticles film on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode, was used a iron sulfate solution. The film was formed after 10 successive cycles, with a scanning speed of 50 mV s-1 and a potential range of -0,9 to -1,25 V. To reduce possible oxides on the surface and activate the electrode, it has been subjected to a cathodic polarization with a potential of -1,25 V for 15 minutes in a sodium hydroxide solution. In cyclic voltammograms obtained in the study of the speed of scanning, there is an increase in the intensity of the anodic and cathodic current peaks. The cathodic peak current varied linearly with the square root of scan rate, showing that the electrode is controlled by diffusion. After successive additions of phosphate there is a linear variation in the current peak in the concentration range of 1,0 x 10-7 a 1,0 x 10-6 mol L-1. To determine if the concentration of phosphorus in real sample, the method of adding standard was used by adding aliquots of phosphate ions in the solution containing soy biodiesel extracted with ....

The electrochromic behavior of iron complexes derived from tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (TPPZ) and a hexacyanoferrate species in polyelectrolytic multilayer adsorbed films is described for the first time. This complex macromolecule was deposited onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates via self-assembly, and the morphology of the modified electrodes was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicated that the hybrid film containing the polyelectrolyte multilayer and the iron complex was highly homogeneous and was approximately 50 nm thick. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior with both intense and persistent coloration as well as a chromatic contrast of approximately 70%. In addition, this system achieved high electrochromic efficiency (over 70 cm(2) C-1 at 630 nm) and a response time that could be measured in milliseconds. The electrode was cycled more than 10(3) times, indicating excellent stability.

We report an efficient alternative to obtain recessed microelectrodes device on gold electrode surface, in which mixed self-assembled monolayer of long and short carbon alkanethiol chains was used for this purpose. Development of the modified electrodes included the chemical adsorption of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid and 2-mercaptoethanol solution, as well as their mixtures, on gold surface, resulting in the final mixed self-assembled monolayer configuration. For comparison, the electrochemical performance of self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid. 3-mercaptopropionic acid, 4-mercapto-1-butanol and 6-mercapto-1-hexanol modified electrodes was also investigated. It was verified that, in the mixed self-assembled monolayer, the 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid acts as a barrier for electron transfer while the short alkanethiol chair is deposited in an island-like shape through which electrons can be freely transferred to ions in solution, allowing electrochemical reactions to occur. The performance of the modified electrodes toward microelectrode behavior was investigated via cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements using [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-) redox couple as a probe. In this case, sigmoidal voltammetric responses were obtained, very similar to those observed for microelectrodes. Such behavior reinforces the proposition of electron transfer through the short alkanethiol chain layer and surface blockage by the long chain one. Electrochemical impedance results allowed calculated the mean radius value of each microelectrode disks of 3.8 mu m with about 22 mu m interval between them. The microelectrode environment provided by the mixed self-assembled monolayer can be conveniently used to provide an efficient catalytic conversion in biosensing applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this study is to develop a new enzymeless electroanalytical method for the indirect quantification of creatinine from urine sample. This method is based on the electrochemical monitoring of picrate anion reduction at a glassy carbon electrode in an alkaline medium before and after it has reacted with creatinine (Jaffe's reaction). By using the differential pulse voltammetry technique under the optimum experimental conditions (step potential, amplitude potential, reaction time, and temperature), a linear analytical curve was obtained for concentrations of creatinine ranging from 1 to 80 mu mol L-1, with a detection limit of 380 nmol L-1. This proposed method was used to measure creatinine in human urine without the interference of most common organic species normally present in biological fluids (e.g., uric acid, ascorbic acid, glucose, and phosphocreatinine). The results obtained using urine samples were highly similar to the results obtained using the reference spectrophotometric method (at a 95% confidence level). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a powerful oxidant which is commonly used in a wide range of applications in the industrial field. Several methods for the quantification of H2O2 have been developed. Among them, electrochemical methods exploit the ability of some hexacyanoferrates (such as Prussian Blue) to detect H2O2 at potentials close to 0.0 V (vs. SCE) avoiding the occurrence of secondary reactions, which are likely to run at large overpotentials. This electrocatalytic behaviour makes hexacyanoferrates excellent redox mediators. When deposited in the form of thin films on the electrode surfaces, they can be employed in the fabrication of sensors and biosensors, normally operated in solutions at pH values close to physiological ones. As hexacyanoferrates show limited stability in not strongly acidic solutions, it is necessary to improve the configuration of the modified electrodes to increase the stability of the films. In this thesis work, organic conducting polymers were used to fabricate composite films with Prussian Blue (PB) to be electro-deposited on Pt surfaces, in order to increase their pH stability. Different electrode configurations and different methods of synthesis of both components were tested, and for each one the achievement of a possible increase in the operational stability of Prussian Blue was verified. Good results were obtained for the polymer 3,3''-didodecyl-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (poly(3,3''-DDTT)), whose presence created a favourable microenvironment for the electrodeposition of Prussian Blue. The electrochemical behaviour of the modified electrodes was studied in both aqueous and organic solutions. Poly(3,3''-DDTT) showed no response in aqueous solution in the potential range where PB is electroactive, thus in buffered aqueous solution is was possible to characterize the composite material, focusing only on the redox behaviour of PB. A combined effect of anion and cation of the supporting electrolyte was noticed. The response of Pt electrodes modified with films of the PB /poly(3,3''-DDTT) composite was evaluated for the determination of H2O2. The performance of such films was found better than that of the PB alone. It can be concluded that poly(3,3''-DDTT) plays a key role in the stabilization of Prussian Blue causing also a wider linearity range for the electrocatalytic response to H2O2.

Polycarbosilanes are a class of polymers at the interface between organic and inorganic chemistry. They are characterized by a high thermal and chemical inertness and high flexibility, especially pronounced for branched structures. Linear polycarbosilanes are well known as precursors for the preparation of SiCx ceramics. Additionally, more sophisticated architectures like dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers or block copolymers have been the subject of research for more than a decade. The scope of this work was to expand the properties and fields of application for polycarbosilane-containing structures. Thus, the work is divided in two major parts. The first part covers the synthesis and characterization of hyperbranched polycarbosilanes containing organometallic moieties. Hyperbranched poly-carbosilanes were synthesized using hydrosilylation of diallylmethylsilane and methyldiundecenylsilane. The degree of branching for polydiallymethylsilane was determined using standard 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The functional building blocks ferrocenyldimethylsilane and diferrocenylmethylsilane were synthesized which contain an isolated ferrocene unit or two ferrocenes bridged by silicon, respectively. Hyperbranched polycarbosilanes functionalized with ferrocenyl moieties were synthesized by modification of preformed polymers or by copolymerization of AB2 carbosilane monomers with AX-type ferrocenylsilanes. Polymers with Mn = 2500-9000g/mol and ferrocene contents of up to 67wt% were obtained. Electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry revealed that polymers functionalized with isolated ferrocene units showed a single reversible oxidation wave, while voltammograms for polymers functionalized with diferrocenyl silane exhibited two well-separated reversible oxidation-reduction waves. This shows that the polymer bound ferrocenes bridged by silicon are electronically communicating and thus oxidation of the first ferrocene shifts the oxidation potential for the adjacent one. The polymers were utilized successfully for the preparation of modified electrodes with persistent and reproducible electrochemical response in organic solvents as well as in aqueous solution. The presented work has proven that ferrocenyl-functionalized hyperbranched polymers exhibit similar electrochemical properties as the analogous dendrimers. In a further approach it was shown that hyperbranched polymers containing organometallic moieties can be synthesized by polymerization of a new ferrocene-containing AB2 monomer - diallylferrocenylsilane. The second part of this work is dedicated to the preparation of core-functional hyperbranched polycarbosilanes. Low molecular weight ambifunctional molecules were synthesized that contain double bonds for the attachment of a polycarbosilane polymer as well as a second functionality available for further reaction and modification. Reactive vinyl groups in the core molecule allow an efficient attachment of hyperbranched polycarbosilane which was proven by MALDI-ToF and GPC. In combination with slow monomer addition techniques molecular weight and polydispersity of the polymers were controlled successfully. Core-functional polymers were characterized by NMR-spectroscopy, MALDI-ToF and GPC. Polymers with polydispersities <2 and molecular weights up to 5300g/mol were obtained. Transformation of the double bonds of the carbosilane was demonstrated with various silanes using hydrosilylation reaction or hydrogenation. Additionally, the core-functionality was varied resulting in polymers with bromo-, phthalimide-, amine- or azide moieties. Thus, a versatile synthetic strategy was developed that allows the synthesis of tailor-made polymers.A promising approach is the application of the polymer building blocks in copolymer synthesis. Bisglycidolization of amine-functional polycarbosilanes produces macro-initiators that are suitable for the multibranching-ring opening polymerization of glycidol. This experiments lead to the first example of hyperbranched-hyperbranched amphiphilic block copolymers, hb-PG-b-hb-PCS. Furthermore, the implementation of copper-catalyzed cycloaddition between azide-functional polycarbosilane and alkyne-functional poly(ethoxyethyl glycidylether) resulted in linear-hyperbranched block copolymers. The facile removal of acetal protecting groups provided convenient access to lin-PG-b-hb-PCS.
