OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the Brazilian Driving Dry Law reached its goal after the three years following its enactment. METHODS: We onnducted a retrospective study of patients with craniofacial fractures who underwent surgery at a university hospital in two periods: before the Law (2005 to 2008) and after the Law (2008 to 2011). RESULTS: 265 patients (220 men and 45 women) were operated on during this period, 149 (56%) before and 116 (44%) after the Law, which indicates a reduction in the number of traumatisms (p=0.04). The age range between 19 and 40 years predominated in both periods. The main causes of traumas were car accidents, physical aggression and falls. Alcohol abuse was identified in 15.4% patients before and 19% patients after the enactment. The jaw and the maxillo-zygomatic complex were the most affected bones. CONCLUSION: The drop in the number of polytraumatized patients operated on at this institution in the three years following the Driving Dry Law was 22%, which is below the expected and desired percentage. These results must be compared to those of different services offering the same attendance type in order to compile data and enlarge statistics. The low index of reduction in the number of traumatisms and the report of alcohol abuse by several patients at the moment of trauma, even after the law, evidence the need of adopting stricter measures to control and punish violators.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated posteroanterior cephalograms before and after treatment and long term follow-up of Class II division 1 patients treated with bionator. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to demonstrate the transverse growth of maxilla and mandible during and after bionator therapy. METHODS: Measurement of transverse dimensions between posterior maxillary and mandibular implants, as well as the distances between the buccal, gonial and antegonial points were recorded. Measurements were analyzed at three periods: T1 = before bionator therapy, T2 = after bionator therapy and T3 = 5.74 years after T2. RESULTS: There was statistically significant transverse increase due to growth and/or treatment for all variables, except for the distance between the anterior maxillary implants. CONCLUSIONS: During the study period only the anterior maxillary area did not show transverse growth.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of the skeletal maturation in the mandibular and dentoalveolar growth and development during the Class II, division 1, malocclusion correction with Balters bionator. METHODS: Three groups of children with Class II, division 1, malocclusion were evaluated. Two of them were treated for one year with the bionator of Balters appliance in different skeletal ages (Group 1: 6 children, 7 to 8 years old and Group 2: 10 children, 9 to 10 years old) and the other one was followed without treatment (Control Group: 7 children, 8 to 9 years old). Lateral 45 degree cephalometric radiographs were used for the evaluation of the mandibular growth and dentoalveolar development. Tantalum metallic implants were used as fixed and stable references for radiograph superimposition and data acquisition. Student's t test was used in the statistical analysis of the displacement of the points in the condyle, ramus, mandibular base and dental points. Analysis of variance one-fixed criteria was used to evaluate group differences (95% of level of significance). RESULTS: The intragroup evaluation showed that all groups present significant skeletal growth for all points analyzed (1.2 to 3.7 mm), but in an intergroup comparison, the increment of the mandibular growth in the condyle, ramus and mandibular base were not statically different. For the dentoalveolar modifications, the less mature children showed greater labial inclination of the lower incisors (1.86 mm) and the most mature children showed greater first permanent molar extrusion (4.8 mm).

In This work we studied the action of calcitonin on bone regeneration in the jaws of normal and ovariectomized rats with and without administration of calcitonin. One hundred rats aged approximately sixty days were used for this study. Of these fifty were ovariectomizedOv forming group and one month after the surgery, animals in all a hundred surgical bone defect was made in the angle of the mandible, creating a bone lesion of approximately 4 mm, covered with a PTFE barrier. OvThe animals were divided into two equal groups: Ov (ovaricctomizados) and LMO (ovariectomized with calcitonin). The other fifty animals, only with the bone lesion were also divided into two groups: control (C) and CM (control with calcitonin). Treated groups received the first dose of the substance immediately after surgery, the dose of 2 IU / kg IM three times per week. The animals were sacrificed after three, seven, 14, 21 and 28 days, with their jaws removed and sent for histological preparation. Densitometric analyzes were performed histological and histomorphometric verifying that it was observed that the Ov animals showed decreased bone density and a much slower regenerative process, when compared with control animals. Calcitonin proved effective in both ovariectomized animals and in those with only bone injury.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the bed in High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants integration. Two different kind of beds -- corticalized and decorticalized -- were made in six dogs. The animals were killed thirty, sixty and ninety days after implantation. Blocks including implant and adjacent bone were harvested, submitted to histological procedures, stained in hematoxiline-eosine and analyzed in optic microscope. The results demonstrated an absence of infection and foreign body reaction associated with High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants. Furthermore, bony and fibrovascular ingrowth could be observed into its pores. The best integration was noted in decorticalized group, in which occurred a greater bony and fibrovascular ingrowth in comparison to the corticalized group
