The Chicago River/Lake Shore area assessment, part of a series of statewide regional assessments, examines approximately 348 square miles in northeastern Illinois that falls within portions of two counties-- Cook and Lake. The area is defined by the watershed of the Chicago River and the areas of Cook and Lake counties that drain to Lake Michigan, excluding the area in southern Cook County that drains to the Calumet River. The report provides information on the natural and human resources of the area as a basis for managing and improving its ecosystems. The development of ecosystem-based information and management programs in Illinois are the result of three processes-- the Critical Trends Assessment Program, Conservation Congress, and Water Resources and Land Use Priorities Task Force.

The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide a summary of literature research on the use of well "shooting" or blasting technology in Northern Illinois. Water well shooting or blasting is done to increase water yield from a sandstone aquifer for a particular water supply well ... The Lake County Health Department (LCHD) detected a chemical, vinyl chloride -- from a family of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) -- in some private wells in the unincorporated Hillcrest Subdivision near Wauconda, through routine well testing done in the fall of 2003. The LCHD presented these findings to the public at a January 13, 2004 meeting. The concern was raised at the public meeting that recent subsurface water well "shooting" or blasting techniques, performed in the deep sandstone aquifer (800 to 1,000 feet below ground surface), in the borehole of a community water supply (CWS) well in the area, might have impacted the shallow aquifer in such a way as to contribute to private well contamination under investigation in the Hillcrest Subdivision.

Determining resource quality and potential reasons for impairment of Illinois streams, inland lakes, and Lake Michigan : (Methods used for 2002 305(b) reporting).

According to Section 305(b) of the Clean Water Act (i.e. a generic name that refers to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972, the Clean Water Act of 1977, and subsequent amendments) and guidance provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), each state must prepare and submit annually to the U.S. Congress and the USEPA report that describes the resource quality of the surface waters of the state. Every other year, this report, commonly referred to as the "305(b) report," must be provided in written form, whereas in alternate years each state may submit an electronic database to meet the reporting requirement. In the 305(b) report, states must also explain how they determined the resource quality of the waters of the state in terms of the degree to which predefined beneficial uses of those waters are supported. Also, in the 305(b) report when any designated use for any water body is not fully supported, the state must report potential reasons for the impairment. Herein, is explained how the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency determines the resource quality of Illinois streams, inland lakes, and Lake Michigan.
