The kinetics of the processes in facing targets sputtering of multicomponent oxide films is presented. The novel configuration of the process exhibits an enhanced ionization efficiency. Discharge diagnostics performed using optical emission spectroscopy revealed strong dependence of plasma parameters on process conditions. Numerical simulation based on thermalization and diffusion of sputtered atoms has been performed to estimate the transport efficiency in off-axis mode. Composition, structure and epitaxial quality of YBa2Cu3O7-x films prepared was found to be strongly dependent on atomic flux ratios (of Cu/Y and Ba/Y) arriving at the substrate, resputtering effect and phase stability of YBa2Cu3O7-x These studies have been shown to be useful in understanding the complex processes that occur in sputtering of multicomponent films. Polymer degradation in solution has several advantages over melt pyrolysis, The degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) occurs at much lower temperatures in solution (280-360degreesC) than in conventional melt pyrolysis (400-450degreesC). The thermal degradation kinetics of LDPE in solution was investigated in this work. LDPE was dissolved in liquid paraffin and degraded for 3 h at various temperatures (280-360degreesC). Samples were taken at specific times and analyzed with high-pressure liquid chromatography/gel permeation chromatography for the molecular weight distribution (MWD), The time evolution of the MWD was modeled with continuous distribution kinetics. Data indicated that LDPE followed random-chain-scission degradation. The rapid initial drop in molecular weight, observed up to 45 min, was attributed to the presence of weak links in the polymer. The rate coefficients for the breakage of weak and strong links were determined, and the corresponding average activation energies were calculated to be 88 and 24 kJ/mol, respectively. The trans- and cis-stilbenes upon inclusion in NaY zeolite are thermally stable. Direct excitation and triplet sensitization results in geometric isomerization and the excited state behavior under these conditions are similar to that in solution. Upon direct excitation, a photostationary state consisting of 65% cis and 35% trans isomers is established. Triplet sensitization with 2-acetonaphthone gave a photostationary state consisting of 63% cis and 37% trans isomers. These numbers are similar to the ones obtained in solution. Thus, the presence of cations and the confined space within the zeolite have very little influence on the overall chemistry during direct and triplet sensitization. However, upon electron transfer sensitization with N-methylacridinium (NMA) as the sensitizer within NaY, isomerization from cis-stilbene radical cation to trans-stilbene occurs and the recombination of radical ions results in triplet stilbene. Prolonged irradiation gave a photostationary state (65% cis and 35% trans) similar to triplet sensitization. This behavior is unique to the zeolite and does not take place in solution. Steady state fluorescence measurements showed that the majority of stilbene molecules are close to the N-methylacridinium sensitizer. Diffuse reflectance flash photolysis studies established that independent of the isomer being sensitized only trans radical cation is formed. Triplet stilbene is believed to be generated via recombination of stilbene radical cation and sensitizer radical anion. One should be careful in using acidic HY zeolite as a medium for photoisomerization of stilbenes. In our hands, in these acidic zeolites isomerization dominated the photoisomerization. This is the first report on the study carried out on high-pressure free-radical initiated oxidated copolymerization of styrene (STY) with alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) at various temperatures (45-65degreesC) at constant pressure (100 psi) and then at various pressures (50-300 psi) keeping the temperature (50degreesC) constant. The compositions of the copolyperoxides obtained from the H-1 NMT spectra were utilized to determine the reactivity ratios of the monomers. The reactivity ratios indicate that STY forms an ideal copolyperoxide with AMS and the copolyperoxide is richer in AMS. The effect of temperature and oxygen pressure in the reactivity ratios of the monomers was studied. The rates of copolymerization (R-p) were used to determine the overall activation energies (E-a) and activation volume (DeltaV(#)) of copolymerization. The unusually higher values of the DeltaV(#) may be due to the pressurizing fluid oxygen which itself is a reactant in the copolymerization, the side reactions, and the chain-transfer reactions occuring during copolymerizations.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectra are presented for p-nitroazobenzene dissolved in chloroform using 18 excitation Wavelengths, covering the region of (1)(n --> pi*) electronic transition. Raman intensities are observed for various totally symmetric fundamentals, namely, C-C, C-N, N=N, and N-O stretching vibrations, indicating that upon photoexcitation the excited-state evolution occurs along all of these vibrational coordinates. For a few fundamentals, interestingly, in p-nitroazobenzene, it is observed that the RR intensities decrease near the maxima of the resonant electronic (1)(n --> pi*) transition. This is attributed to the interference from preresonant scattering due to the strongly allowed (1)(pi --> pi*) electronic transition. The electronic absorption spectrum and the absolute Raman cross section for the nine Franck-Condon active fundamentals of p-nitroazobenzene have been successfully modeled using Heller's time-dependent formalism for Raman scattering. This employs harmonic description of the lowest energy (1)(n --> pi*) potential energy surface. The short-time isomerization dynamics is then examined from a priori knowledge of the ground-state normal mode descriptions of p-nitroazobenzene to convert the wave packet motion in dimensionless normal coordinates to internal coordinates. It is observed that within 20 fs after photoexcitation in p-nitroazobenzene, the N=N and C-N stretching vibrations undergo significant changes and the unsubstituted phenyl ring and the nitro stretching vibrations are also distorted considerably.

Submicron size Co, Ni and Co-Ni alloy powders have been synthesized by the polyol method using the corresponding metal malonates and Pd powder by reduction of PdOx in methanol. The kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction ( HER) in 6 M KOH electrolyte have been studied on electrodes made from the pressed powders. The d.c. polarization measurements have resulted in a value close to 120 mV decade(-1) for the Tafel slope, suggesting that the HER follows the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. The values of exchange current density (i(o)) are in the range 1-10 mA cm(-2) for electrodes fabricated in the study. The a.c. impedance spectra measured at several potentials in the HER region showed a single semicircle in the Nyquist plots. Exchange current density (i(o)) and energy transfer coefficient (alpha) have been calculated by employing a nonlinear least square-fitting program.

The thermal degradation of vinyl polyperoxides, poly(styrene peroxide, (PSP), poly(alpha-methylstyrene peroxide) (PAMSP) and poly(alpha-phenylstyrene pet-oxide) (PAPSP), was carried out at different temperatures in toluene. The time evolution of molecular weight distributions (MWDs) was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A continuous distribution model was used to evaluate the random chain degradation rate coefficients. The activation energies, determined from the temperature dependence of the rate coefficients, suggest that thermal degradation of polyperoxides is controlled by the dissociation of the O-O bonds in the backbone of the polymer chain. Among the three polyperoxides investigated, the thermal stability is the highest for PAPSP and the lowest for PAMSP. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Through a systematic study of several diphenylcyclopropane derivatives, we have inferred that the cations present within a zeolite control the excited-state chemistry of these systems. In the parent 1,2-diphenylcylopropane, the cation binds to the two phenyl rings in a sandwich-type arrangement, and such a mode of binding prevents cis-to-trans isomerization. Once an ester or amide group is introduced into the system (derivatives of 2beta,3beta-diphenylcyclopropane-1alpha-carboxylic acid), the cation binds to the carbonyl group present in these chromophores and such a binding has no influence on the cis-trans isomerization process. Cation-reactant structures computed at density functional theory level have been very valuable in rationalizing the observed photochemical behavior of diphenylcyclopropane derivatives included in zeolites. While the parent system, 1,2-diphenyleylopropane, has been extensively investigated in the context of chiral induction in solution, owing to its failure to isomerize from cis to trans, the same could not be investigated in zeolites. However, esters of 2beta,3beta-diphenylcyclopropane-1alpha-carboxylic acid could be studied within zeolites in the context of chiral induction. Chiral induction as high 20% ee and 55% de has been obtained with selected systems. These numbers, although low, are much higher than what has been obtained in solution with the same system or with the parent system by other investigators (maximum similar to10% ee).

Ultrasonic degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was carried out in several solvents and some mixtures of solvents. The time evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD), determined by gel permeation chromatography, is analysed by continuous distribution kinetics. The rate coefficients for polymer degradation are determined for each solvent. The variation of rate coefficients is correlated with the vapour pressure of the solvent, kinematic viscosity of the solution and solvent-polymer interaction parameters. The vapour pressure and the kinematic viscosity of the solution are found to be more critical than other parameters (such as the Huggins and Flory-Huggins constants) in determining the degradation rates. The degradation kinetics of polycarbonate [poly(bisphenol A carbonate)] in benzene catalyzed by commercial (rutile) TiO2 (BET surface area = 11 m(2)/g), anatase TiO2 (156 m(2)/g), and 1 atom % Pt/TiO2 (111 m2/g), prepared by the solution combustion technique, was investigated at various temperatures (230-280 degreesC) and 50 atm. The time evolution of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and modeled with continuous distribution kinetics to obtain the degradation rate coefficients. The rate coefficients for the catalytic degradation of polycarbonate increased by factors of 20, 3.5, and 1.3 compared to the rate coefficients for thermal degradation when catalyzed by nanosized TiO2 anatase, Pt/TiO2 anatase, and commercial TiO2, respectively, at 280 degreesC. The increased catalytic activity of combustion for synthesized TiO2 and 1% Pt/TiO2 might be due to the increased acidity and BET surface area. The activation energies, determined from the temperature dependencies of the rate coefficients, were 16.3, 21.5, and 39.1 kcal/mol for commercial TiO2, combustion-synthesized Pt/TiO2, and anatase TiO2, respectively.

A series of new dicationic dihydrogen complexes of ruthenium of the type cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(L)][BF4](2) (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2; L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), PF((OPr)-Pr-i)(2)) have been prepared by protonating the precursor hydride complexes cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] (L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3)) using HBF4.Et2O. The cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] complexes were obtained from the trans hydrides via an isomerization reaction that is acid-accelerated. This isomerization reaction gives mixtures of cis and trans hydride complexes, the ratios of which depend on the cone angles of the phosphite ligands: the greater the cone angle, the greater is the amount of the cis isomer. The eta(2)-H-2 ligand in the dihydrogen complexes is labile, and the loss of H-2 was found to be reversible. The protonation reactions of the starting hydrides with trans PMe3 or PMe2Ph yield mixtures of the cis and the trans hydride complexes; further addition of the acid, however, give trans-[(dPPM)(2)Ru(BF4)Cl]. The roles of the bite angles of the dppm ligand as well as the steric and the electronic properties of the monodentate phosphorus ligands in this series of complexes are discussed. X-ray crystal structures of trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru-(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], and cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3))][BF4] complexes have been determined.

We present insightful results on the kinetics of photodarkening (PD) in Ge(x)As(45-x)Se(55) glasses at the ambient and liquid helium temperatures when the network rigidity is increased by varying x from 0 to 16. We observe a many fold change in PD and its kinetics with decreasing network flexibility and temperature. Moreover, temporal evolution of PD shows a dramatic change with increasing x.
