Chemical and mineralogical compositions of ferromanganese oxide coatings on rocks dredged from the New England Seamounts, the Sierra Leone Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Equator have been determined in an investigation of regional differences in Atlantic ferromanganese deposits. Most encrustations are clearly of hydrogenous origin, consisting mainly of todorokite and delta MnO2, but several recovered from the equatorial fracture zones may be hydrothermal accumulations. Differences in the chemistry of the water column and in growth rates of the ferromanganese coatings may be important in producing this regional contrast in composition. Fine-scale changes in element abundances within the encrustations indicate that the nature of the substrate has little influence on compositional variations.

Lithological and stratigraphical data obtained from 167 boreholes from the Schaabe spit in northeast Rügen and 46 radiocarbon datings mainly on peats, as well as interpretation of diatoms and palynological assemblages lead to a reappraisal of its sedimentational history and morphological development. The new local shoreline displacement curve is compared and discussed with the previous curve of Vorpommern (Southern Baltic Sea).

The interpretation of 19 bore cores from the sea floor west of Rote Kliff (Isle of Sylt, North-Frisian Islands) gave information about the thickness of Holocene sand and the sediments below it; especially regarding their resistance to erosion in the area seaward of the beach-barrier. At the Same time, additional knowledge was obtained about the development of Sylt.

The attenuation property of a lateral propagating light (LPL) in sea ice was measured using an artificial lamp in the Canadian Arctic during the 2007/2008 winter. A measurement method is proposed and applied whereby a recording instrument is buried in the sea ice and an artificial lamp is moved across the instrument. The apparent attenuation coefficient µ(lamda) for the lateral propagating light is obtained from the measured logarithmic relative variation rate. With the exception of blue and red lights, the attenuation coefficient changed little with wavelength, but changed considerably with depth. The vertical decrease of the attenuation coefficient was found to be correlated with salinity: the greater the salinity, the greater the attenuation coefficient. A clear linear relation of salinity and the lateral attenuation coefficient with R2 = 0.939 exists to address the close correlation of the attenuation of LPL with the scattering from the brine. The observed attenuation coefficient of LPL is much larger than that of the vertical propagation light, which we speculate to be caused by scattering. Part of this scattered component is transmitted out of the sea ice from the upper and lower surfaces.

First thermoluminescence (TL) datings of glacial deposits from several well-known sites in northwest Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) indicate a possible Middle Weichselian Glaciation in this region. The TL dates obtained imply an ice sheet at about 70-40 ka B.P. here, whose presence in this part of Europe has not been previously considered. The reliability of the TL dates was cross-checked on different lithologies; the dating was performed in two independent laboratories. These dates and their interpretations, however, must still be confirmed both geologically and paleontologically on suitable sites where glacial sediments are sandwiched between Eemian deposits and interstadial deposits older than the Late Weichselian.

A refined sample processing technique using glacial acetic acid has been applied to Upper Cenomanian and Lower Turonian limestones from Baddeckenstedt (Lower Saxony) enabeling the first quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminiferal populations through the Stage boundary succession in northwestern Germany. Measurements of carbonate contents, organic carbon and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes were also reported. These data allow a correlation to be made of the Baddeckenstedt section with those at Misburg (basinal facies, northwestern Germany) and Dover (Plenus Marls, southern England). Significant maxima of the organic carbon content at Baddeckenstedt correspond to prominent black shale couplets at Misburg. The planktonic foraminiferal generic groups show at Baddeckenstedt similar fluctuations as reported from Dover. Their correlation reveals details of a complex paleoceanographic regime in the NW-German Basin during the Cenomanian/Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event.
