Representación de lo popular/indígena/campesino en tiempos de refundación estatal. El caso de la revolución nacional de 1952 y la revolución democrática-cultural de 2006 en Bolivia

Luego de un importante ciclo de insurrecciones populares producidas en la primera mitad del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI en contra de las políticas excluyentes de los gobiernos liberales y neoliberales, se abrió paso a la consolidación de dos acontecimientos políticos de gran trascendencia para la historia de Bolivia: la Revolución Nacional de 1952 y la Revolución Democrática-Cultural de 2006. Si bien ambos procesos revolucionarios responden a determinadas especificidades, existe en ambos procesos un componente común, y es la intervención directa -en distintos espacios de poder político- de los sectores populares: obreros, indígenas y campesinos. La presencia y participación directa de estos sectores en el escenario político nacional, hizo que el mapa soiciopolítico boliviano sea profundamente trastocado. Enfocada en la Revolución Nacional de 1952 y la Revolución Democrática-Cultural de 2006, la presente investigación tiene como objetivo, realizar un análisis a las representaciones discursivas que se desprendieron desde las páginas de los periódicos Los Tiempos de la ciudad de Cochabamba y El Diario de la ciudad de La Paz, sobre la presencia y participación de los actores sociales populares en el desarrollo de los procesos de transformación estatal en Bolivia.

Manuela, la impensable: un diálogo entre Amor y gloria: el romance de Manuela Sáenz y el Libertador Simón Bolívar (1952), de María Jesús Alvarado, y Manuela Sáenz, la divina loca (195?), de Olga Briceño (Estudios)

En este artículo se analiza el diálogo que establecen las intelectuales latinoamericanas con la Historia oficial por medio de determinadas ficciones de archivo publicadas en la década de 1950. Al respecto, es importante tener en cuenta que tras la adquisición de derechos civiles por parte de las mujeres latinoamericanas en las décadas de 1930 y 1940 –cuando conquistaron el derecho al voto, ingresaron masivamente a las universidades y se erigieron como posibles representantes de los intereses públicos–, las intelectuales del continente demandaron la adscripción a alguna genealogía histórica que les proporcionara coherencia y profundidad identitaria. En muchas ocasiones debieron echar mano del discurso literario para negociar su existencia presente con el pasado histórico y ampliar los límites de la fundación continental con la visibilización de las voces y subjetividades femeninas. En este marco se publican los dos libros que componen el corpus: Manuela Sáenz, la divina loca (195?), de la venezolana Olga Briceño, y Amor y gloria: el romance de Manuela Sáenz y el Libertador Simón Bolívar (1952), de la peruana María Jesús Alvarado. Estas lecturas permitirán reflexionar en torno al proceso de historización de la alteridad demandado por las nuevas ciudadanas del continente, determinar sus alcances y la subjetividad resultante de este enfrentamiento.

Epic Sea Battle at Night: a Revolutionary Play with the Economic Thinking of Milton Friedman

The play Epic Sea Battle at Night was originally staged in 1967, to commemorate two of China’s People’s Liberation Army’s military triumphs over the Taiwanese navy two years previously. Produced at the height of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the play is an example of the exploitation of the arts as an ideological instrument, celebrating military heroism and political conviction. Stills from the play were included in, China Pictorial 11, an English language propaganda pamphlet that was distributed to Western Imperialists in order to educate them in Maoist policy. Today, these images are clear representations of ideology. More than forty years after the Cultural Revolution, the ideology under which we live, neo-liberal late-capitalism, deliberately shirks from such blatant displays of propaganda. We have supposedly the freedom to believe whatever we like in a post-ideological age, and yet core beliefs about meritocracy, individualism and competitiveness frequently go unchallenged. By juxtaposing the visual language of ideology with the text of the capitalist manifesto, the re-enactment of a scene from Epic Sea Battle at Night harnesses the aesthetics of the past so as to allow us to reconsider the alleged neutrality of the present. The design of the stage, the positioning of the actors, costumes and props of the current production closely resembled those documented in China Pictorial 11, yet the actors’ monologues belong to a completely different context. No less heroic and utopian in tone than the speech given by the political instructor of gunboat 874 in the original play, the capitalist manifesto was an attempt to give a concrete language to the shapeless ideology of the present, and to force the invisible currents that govern life today, in China as in the West, to the surface. Neither a lecture on neo-liberal economics, nor a theatrical performance of a narrative, the piece appropriated the format of the propaganda play to re-evaluate the relationship between art and politics now.

‘Due libertie and proportiond equalitie’: Milton, democracy, and the republican tradition

John Milton’s political thought has been interpreted in strikingly divergent ways. This article argues that he should be seen as a classical republican, and locates key aspects of his political thought within an ancient Greek discourse critical of democracy or extreme democracy. Milton was clearly familiar with the ancient texts expounding this critique, and he himself deployed both the arguments and the characteristic discourse of the anti-democratic thinkers across the span of his writing. This vision of politics emphasized the rightly-ordered soul of the masculine republican citizen, in contrast to the unruly passions seen both in tyrants and in the democratic rabble.

In at the Deep End. Impressions of farming in a year gaining experience: 1952-3; 1978-85

The book describes a wide variety of students’ experiences in their practical year prior to entering University to study BSc Agriculture. Until comparatively recently it was the normal requirement for all such students, whether or not they already had home farming experience, to gain a full year’s experience of practical agriculture – and to write a report thereon. This record of 41 students’ reports of the pre-entry year begins with Paul’s own experience in the early 1950s before 41 reports from 30 or more years ago. The essays provide compelling and fascinating stories, well-articulated with clear acknowledgement for most part of the humanity and the warmth with which each student was treated by farmers and farm workers alike, despite the difference in both age and experience (considerable!). Den hvita stadens tjänare : En studie över fackligt arbete och arbetsvilkor bland mentalskötare vid Säters sjukhus åren 1912 till 1952

Vilka övergripande förändringar skedde för personalen på Säters sjukhus med avseende på arbetsmiljö och utbildning, speciellt med avseende på genus. Hur gestaltade sig kvinnornas fackliga arbete och villkor på Säters sjukhus jämfört med männens.Resultat: Det skedde tydliga förändringar i fackföreningens medlemsantal under perioden, föreningens viktigaste arbete var kampen för 48 timmars arbetsvecka. Under periodens senare del tillkom arbetarskyddslagstiftning som innebar en förbättring i arbetsmiljön. Lön och utbildning var andra frågor för fackföreningen, särskilt under 1940-talet förbättrades kvinnornas utbildningsmöjligheter. Sjukhuset var starkt uppdelat i en manlig och en kvinnlig del, där fackföreningen var en övervägande manlig aktivitet.
