A model of Drosophila circadian rhythm generation was developed to represent feedback loops based on transcriptional regulation of per, Clk (dclock), Pdp-1, and vri (vrille). The model postulates that histone acetylation kinetics make transcriptional activation a nonlinear function of [CLK]. Such a nonlinearity is essential to simulate robust circadian oscillations of transcription in our model and in previous models. Simulations suggest that two positive feedback loops involving Clk are not essential for oscillations, because oscillations of [PER] were preserved when Clk, vri, or Pdp-1 expression was fixed. However, eliminating positive feedback by fixing vri expression altered the oscillation period. Eliminating the negative feedback loop in which PER represses per expression abolished oscillations. Simulations of per or Clk null mutations, of per overexpression, and of vri, Clk, or Pdp-1 heterozygous null mutations altered model behavior in ways similar to experimental data. The model simulated a photic phase-response curve resembling experimental curves, and oscillations entrained to simulated light-dark cycles. Temperature compensation of oscillation period could be simulated if temperature elevation slowed PER nuclear entry or PER phosphorylation. The model makes experimental predictions, some of which could be tested in transgenic Drosophila.

The mouse $\alpha$2(I) collagen gene is specifically expressed in a limited number of cell types in the body including fibroblasts and osteoblasts. We had previously shown that a promoter containing the sequences between $-$350 and +54 bp was expressed at low levels in a cell- and tissue-specific fashion in transgenic mice. Further studies suggested that the sequence between $-$315 and $-$284 bp could mediate cell- and tissue-specific expression of reporter genes in cell culture and in transgenic mice. We report here characterization of the proteins binding to this segment and propose a model for the cell-specific expression conferred by this sequence. In this study we also identified a strong enhancer for the mouse $\alpha$2(I) collagen gene located approximately 13.5 to 19.5 kb upstream of the transcriptional start site. This enhancer segment is characterized by the presence of three cell-specific hypersensitive sites and can drive high levels of cell-specific expression of a heterologous 220-bp mouse $\alpha$1(I) collagen promoter. In the course of this study, we identified a novel zinc finger transcription factor (designated murine epithelial zinc finger, mEZF) which was transiently expressed in the mesenchymal cells which give rise to the skeletal primordia and the metanephric kidney during the early stages of embryogenesis. In newborn mice, the mEZF gene is expressed at high levels in differentiated epithelial cells of the skin, oral mucosa, tongue, esophagus, stomach and colon. Chromosomal mapping suggested that the mEZF gene mapped to mouse Chromosome 4 and that the human homolog of mEZF would likely map to human Chromosome 9q31. This region of the human genome contains tumor suppressor genes for basal cell carcinomas of the skin as well as for squamous cell carcinomas of various organs. We cloned and characterized the human homolog of mEZF and mapped its chromosomal position as a first step in determining whether or not this gene plays a role in the development of these tumors. ^

Intestinal bacterial metabolites are an important communication tool between the host immune system and the commensal microbiota to establish mutualism. In a recent paper published in Science, Wendy Garrett and her colleagues report an exciting role of the three most abundant microbial-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid, in colonic regulatory T cell (cTreg) homeostasis.

Despite gains made by Title IX in the past 36 years, including increased female participation in high school and collegiate sport, there is evidence that gender equity in sport is not fully achieved. Researchers target the media because they tend to shape social values and disseminate information to the masses (Kane, 1978, in Fink & Kensicki, 2002). As sports become more pervasive, framing theory has become particularly relevant. The purpose of this study is to build on the Hardin et al. (2002) study by examining the relationship among media sports coverage, gender equity in sport and the perceptions young sports fans begin to form about gender and sport based on media consumption. The researcher hypothesized that since women face discrimination in sport starting from the time that they choose to participate, children will perceive male athletes and their sports as more legitimate. Additionally, the media play a major role in shaping the views of audiences, so the way that they represent male and female athletes, including juxtaposing them, may have an impact on children. The researcher conducted a content analysis of 24 Sports Illustrated for Kids issues from 1996 to 1999 and 24 issues from 2006 to 2007. The researcher analyzed the content of photographs (N=3219) and of headlines (N=762) by using the definitions determined by Hardin et al. (2002). We found that there is a disproportionate amount of coverage devoted to male athletes and that the discrepancy between media representation between men and women in sport has grown since the mid-1990s. This study also includes a focus group conducted with three children from a community swimming program in a northeastern town and found that those children were acutely aware of the differences between men and women in sport based on the discussion. The researcher does not attempt to find a causal relationship between these children’s perceptions and the way media represents them, but rather uses the focus group to complement the content analysis. As children become sports consumers in later life, future research exploring the relationship between children’s perceptions and the media’s representations need to be done before causality and the significance of media effects are determined.

Children and adults frequently skip breakfast and rates are currently increasing. In addition, the food choices made for breakfast are not always healthy ones. Breakfast skipping, in conjunction with unhealthy breakfast choices, leads to impaired cognitive functioning, poor nutrient intake, and overweight. In response to these public health issues, Skip To Breakfast, a behaviorally based school and family program, was created to increase consistent and healthful breakfast consumption among ethnically diverse fifth grade students and their families, using Intervention Mapping™. Four classroom lessons and four parent newsletters were used to deliver the intervention. For this project, a healthy, "3 Star Breakfast" was promoted, and included a serving each of dairy product, whole grain, and fruit, each with an emphasis on being low in fat and sugar. The goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. A pilot-test of the intervention was conducted in one classroom, in a school in Houston, during the Fall 2007 semester. A qualitative evaluation of the intervention was conducted, which included focus groups with students, phone interviews of parents, process evaluation data from the classroom teacher, and direct observation. Sixteen students and six parents participated in the study. Data were recorded and themes were identified. Initial results showed there is a need for such programs. Based on the initial feedback, edits were made to the intervention and program. Results showed high acceptability among the teacher, students, and parents. It became apparent that students were not reliably getting the parent newsletters to their parents to read, so a change to the protocol was made, in which students will receive incentives for having parents read newsletters and return signed forms, to increase parent participation. Other changes included small modifications to the curriculum, such as, clarifying instructions, changing in-class assignments to homework assignments, and including background reading materials for the teacher. The main trial is planned to be carried out in Spring 2008, in two elementary schools, utilizing four, fifth grade classes from each, with one school acting as the control and one as the intervention school. Results from this study can be used as an adjunct to the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) program. ^

Este artículo reconstruye los significados asignados en diferentes períodos y contextos históricos a ciertos acontecimientos y personajes del siglo XIX. Cuatro temas han sido analizados:las rupturas y continuidades entre el período colonial y republicano, la inestabilidad política, las razones del estancamiento económico y el regionalismo.

A geological model of subduction postulated by Karig, Ingle, et al. (1975) and Karig and Sharman (1975) proposes that the sedimentary prism at the foot of the landward wall is being actively built as sediment is scraped off the subducting oceanic and plastered onto the base of the wedge, forming an accretionary wedge containing overthrust sedimentary layers or intense sedimentary folding. Because overlying layers must continually be uplifted and compressed to accommodate new matter at the base, the accreting wedge will provide a geochemical record of this process at or near the Japan Trench. Several recent papers have discussed the metalliferous sediments on the active oceanic ridges. The geochemistry of such sediments is now reasonably well known: generally these deposits are considered products of volcanic processes (Boström and Peterson, 1969; Böstrom et al., 1969; Horowitz, 1970, 1974; Cronan et al., 1972; Cronan and Garrett, 1973). The geochemistry of subduction zone sediments, however, is less well known, and the need for studies of these sediments is particularly urgent if such sediments provide a record of the effects of subduction of oceanic plates under continental crust. Because the Japan Trench contains welldeveloped subduction zone deposits, Leg 56 sampling was of utmost importance to the discovery of how they originate.

We have measured the relative abundances of smectite, illite, chlorite, and kaolinite in a composite section of the distal Bengal Fan. Two sources of sediment appear to dominate, a smectite-poor, illite-rich source associated with rapid denudation of the Himalayas and a smectite-rich, illite-poor source probably on the continental margin of the Indian sub-continent. Changes in source appear to be related to uplift in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau both directly and through the climatic and oceanographic consequences of uplift.

The combination of multiple sediment sources and varying rates of sediment accumulation in the Celebes and Sulu seas have had significant impact on the processes of diagenesis, mineralization, and pore-fluid flow. Isotopic and mass-balance calculations help elucidate the various reactions taking place in these western Pacific basins, where ash alteration and basalt-seawater interactions are superimposed on the effects of sulfate oxidation of organic carbon and biogenic methane and of dolomitization of biogenic carbonates. Based on the shape of the calcium and magnesium depth profiles, two major reactive zones have been identified. The first is located near the zone of sulfate depletion and is characterized by carbonate recrystallization, dolomitization and ash alteration reactions at both Ocean Drilling Program Sites 767 and 768. The second reactive zone corresponds to the bottom of the sedimentary sequence and is characterized by alteration reactions in the basement (Site 767) and in the pyroclastic deposits beneath the sediment column (Site 768).
