A cross-cultural examination of social and sexual behaviour in High Functioning Autism and Down Syndrome

The focus of this research was to obtain an understanding of the social and sexual behaviour of adolescents with High Functioning Autism (HFA) or Down Syndrome (DS) in comparison to Typically Developing (TD) adolescents across cultures. The findings highlight the importance of cross-cultural research and indicate the need for sex education. The portfolio presents four case studies which support the proposition that insecure attachment is only likely to lead to depression in the presence of socially-related and other psychological difficulties, since not all insecurely attached children develop depressive symptoms.

Ecology of feral cats (Felis catus) at a refuse dump in coastal southern Victoria, Australia

The ecology and behaviour of a colony of feral cats was studied at a refuse dump at Anglesea, Victoria. Research found that the cats lived at the dump all year round, congregating on the exposed refuse at night. Here they fed mainly on meat scraps, supplementing their diet with local wildlife. Aggression between individual cats was rare, allowing them to live as a colony, rather than as solitary individuals. Although female cats were fecund, breeding success was low, preventing a steady increase in the population. No justification for controlling these cats could be found at this time.

Impact of social anxiety on quality of life : a longitudinal study

This thesis found that individuals with social anxiety had high levels of co-morbid depression, reduced quality of life, poorer health and wellbeing, and they used maladaptive coping strategies. The negative effects of social anxiety and social anxiety co-morbid depression could be predicted over a 6-month time period. The portfolio argues the impact of poor attachment style, poor parenting behaviour and negative environmental influences as contributors to individuals' longer term psychological functioning with four case studies highlighting the contributing role of these early influences on later functioning.

Participation, relational justice and social identity in cervical cancer screening

Extending existing health literature by drawing on social and community psychology, this thesis represents the first attempt to explore the conceptualisation of 'participation' in cervical cancer screening. Quantitative and qualitative findings suggested that women's experiences of 'patient participation' and 'voice opportunity' were important and related to various social processes and variables in this health context. Using four case studies, the professional portfolio demonstrates a biopsychosocial approach to assessment and intervention as used by a provisional health psychologist working with clients with intellectual disabilities in order to promote sexual health.

Construction of social difference in mathematics education

This study investigated the social context in which the learning of mathematics occured. It examined the practices of schools and mathematics in order to identify the ways in which they contributed to the construction of social difference. Accordingly, this study was concerned with how schools and mathematics classrooms contribute to working-class students lack of success in mathematics. The differences that occurred in these practices could be seen to contribute to the different outcomes likely to occur in the later years of schooling. It was argued that these differences mean that students from middle-classes would be more likely to undertake and be successful in the study of mathematics than their working-class peers.

Effects of a fox removal program on small and medium-sized mammal population dynamics within the Anglesea Heathlands, Victoria

This thesis assessed the diet of foxes within the ALCOA lease area of Anglesea to determine which native and introduced species foxes were eating. Results showed that Swamp Wallaby was regularly eaten but many other mammals, birds, insects and reptiles were also consumed. The response of native mammals to seasonal fox removal was also determined.

Old age in a new world

Five hundred early settlers of Victoria's Western District were studied in their old age. Findings about the place of the elderly in community formation, and about the many elderly who belonged to three generations of families all present early in white settlement, have added to existing knowledge of colonial society.

Wool industry : a decade of turbulence : an examination of some of the factors contributing to the crisis within Australia's wool industry, and the resulting economic, social and demographic effects on a small isolated rural community

A central issue of this thesis has been an examination of the effects that the current wool crisis has had on the Balmoral district, an area almost solely devoted to the production of wool and wool sheep. Examines the methods being utilised to try to alleviate some of these effects.

Community attitudes to fertility and infertility

Assesses by survey some of the current community attitudes to fertility and infertility with reference to artificial insemination. Indicates that a pronatalist norm is dominant with some reservation in acceptance of artificial insemination by donor.
