Response time (RT) variability is a common finding in ADHD research. RT variability may reflect frontal cortex function and may be related to deficits in sustained attention. The existence of a sustained attention deficit in ADHD has been debated, largely because of inconsistent evidence of time-on-task effects. A fixed-sequence Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) was given to 29 control, 39 unimpaired and 24 impaired-ADHD children (impairment defined by the number of commission errors). The response time data were analysed using the Fast Fourier Transform, to define the fast-frequency and slow-frequency contributions to overall response variability. The impaired-ADHD group progressively slowed in RT over the course of the 5.5 min task, as reflected in this group's greater slow-frequency variability. The fast-frequency trial-to-trial variability was also significantly greater, but did not differentially worsen over the course of the task. The higher error rates of the impaired-ADHD group did not become differentially greater over the length of the task. The progressive slowing in mean RT over the course of the task may relate to a deficit in arousal in the impaired-ADHD group. The consistently poor performance in fast-frequency variability and error rates may be due to difficulties in sustained attention that fluctuate on a trial-to-trial basis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. This paper describes the design, application, and evaluation of a user friendly, flexible, scalable and inexpensive Advanced Educational Parallel (AdEPar) digital signal processing (DSP) system based on TMS320C25 digital processors to implement DSP algorithms. This system will be used in the DSP laboratory by graduate students to work on advanced topics such as developing parallel DSP algorithms. The graduating senior students who have gained some experience in DSP can also use the system. The DSP laboratory has proved to be a useful tool in the hands of the instructor to teach the mathematically oriented topics of DSP that are often difficult for students to grasp. The DSP laboratory with assigned projects has greatly improved the ability of the students to understand such complex topics as the fast Fourier transform algorithm, linear and circular convolution, the theory and design of infinite impulse response (IIR) and finite impulse response (FIR) filters. The user friendly PC software support of the AdEPar system makes it easy to develop DSP programs for students. This paper gives the architecture of the AdEPar DSP system. The communication between processors and the PC-DSP processor communication are explained. The parallel debugger kernels and the restrictions of the system are described. The programming in the AdEPar is explained, and two benchmarks (parallel FFT and DES) are presented to show the system performance.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impedance cardiogram recorded by an automated external defibrillator during cardiac arrest to facilitate emergency care by lay persons. Lay persons are poor at emergency pulse checks (sensitivity 84%, specificity 36%); guidelines recommend they should not be performed. The impedance cardiogram (dZ/dt) is used to indicate stroke volume. Can an impedance cardiogram algorithm in a defibrillator determine rapidly circulatory arrest and facilitate prompt initiation of external cardiac massage? <br/> <br/>DESIGN: Clinical study. <br/> <br/>SETTING: University hospital. <br/> <br/>PATIENTS: Phase 1 patients attended for myocardial perfusion imaging. Phase 2 patients were recruited during cardiac arrest. This group included nonarrest controls. <br/> <br/>INTERVENTIONS: The impedance cardiogram was recorded through defibrillator/electrocardiographic pads oriented in the standard cardiac arrest position. <br/> <br/>MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Phase 1: Stroke volumes from gated myocardial perfusion imaging scans were correlated with parameters from the impedance cardiogram system (dZ/dt(max) and the peak amplitude of the Fast Fourier Transform of dZ/dt between 1.5 Hz and 4.5 Hz). Multivariate analysis was performed to fit stroke volumes from gated myocardial perfusion imaging scans with linear and quadratic terms for dZ/dt(max) and the Fast Fourier Transform to identify significant parameters for incorporation into a cardiac arrest diagnostic algorithm. The square of the peak amplitude of the Fast Fourier Transform of dZ/dt was the best predictor of reduction in stroke volumes from gated myocardial perfusion imaging scans (range = 33-85 mL; p = .016). Having established that the two pad impedance cardiogram system could detect differences in stroke volumes from gated myocardial perfusion imaging scans, we assessed its performance in diagnosing cardiac arrest. Phase 2: The impedance cardiogram was recorded in 132 "cardiac arrest" patients (53 training, 79 validation) and 97 controls (47 training, 50 validation): the diagnostic algorithm indicated cardiac arrest with sensitivities and specificities (+/- exact 95% confidence intervals) of 89.1% (85.4-92.1) and 99.6% (99.4-99.7; training) and 81.1% (77.6-84.3) and 97% (96.7-97.4; validation). <br/> <br/>CONCLUSIONS: The impedance cardiogram algorithm is a significant marker of circulatory collapse. Automated defibrillators with an integrated impedance cardiogram could improve emergency care by lay persons, enabling rapid and appropriate initiation of external cardiac massage. <br/> <br/>

OBJECTIVE: Laypersons are poor at emergency pulse checks (sensitivity 84%, specificity 36%). Guidelines indicate that pulse checks should not be performed. The impedance cardiogram (dZ/dt) is used to assess stroke volume. Can a novel defibrillator-based impedance cardiogram system be used to distinguish between circulatory arrest and other collapse states? <br/> <br/>DESIGN: Animal study. <br/> <br/>SETTING: University research laboratory. <br/> <br/>SUBJECTS: Twenty anesthetized, mechanically ventilated pigs, weight 50-55 kg. <br/> <br/>INTERVENTIONS: Stroke volume was altered by right ventricular pacing (160, 210, 260, and 305 beats/min). Cardiac arrest states were then induced: ventricular fibrillation (by rapid ventricular pacing) and, after successful defibrillation, pulseless electrical activity and asystole (by high-dose intravenous pentobarbitone). <br/> <br/>MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The impedance cardiogram was recorded through electrocardiogram/defibrillator pads in standard cardiac arrest positions. Simultaneously recorded electro- and impedance cardiogram (dZ/dt) along with arterial blood pressure tracings were digitized during each pacing and cardiac arrest protocol. Five-second epochs were analyzed for sinus rhythm (20 before ventricular fibrillation, 20 after successful defibrillation), ventricular fibrillation (40), pulseless electrical activity (20), and asystole (20), in two sets of ten pigs (ten training, ten validation). Standard impedance cardiogram variables were noncontributory in cardiac arrest, so the fast Fourier transform of dZ/dt was assessed. During ventricular pacing, the peak amplitude of fast Fourier transform of dZ/dt (between 1.5 and 4.5 Hz) correlated with stroke volume (r2 = .3, p &lt; .001). In cardiac arrest, a peak amplitude of fast Fourier transform of dZ/dt of &lt; or = 4 dB x ohm x rms indicated no output with high sensitivity (94% training set, 86% validation set) and specificity (98% training set, 90% validation set). <br/> <br/>CONCLUSIONS: As a powerful clinical marker of circulatory collapse, the fast Fourier transformation of dZ/dt (impedance cardiogram) has the potential to improve emergency care by laypersons using automated defibrillators. <br/> <br/>

In this paper, the design constraints that are required for a Rotman lens to realize discrete Fourier transform (DFT) amplitude and phase functionality are derived. A Fourier Rotman lens has been designed, fabricated and validated. The amplitude and phase response and the array pattern based on the CST⢠results are validated with the theoretical DFT results. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first Fourier Rotman lens to be fabricated and validated. The solution provided replaces multilayer Butler matrix solutions with a simple single layer microstrip technology.

The impact of power fluctuations arising from fixed-speed wind turbines on the magnitude and frequency of inter-area oscillations was investigated. The authors used data acquisition equipment to record the power flow on the interconnector between the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland systems. By monitoring the interconnector oscillation using a fast Fourier transform, it was possible to determine the magnitude and frequency of the inter-area oscillation between the Northern Ireland electricity system and that of the electricity supply board. Analysis was preformed to determine the relationship (if any) between the inter-area oscillation and the observed wind power generation at the corresponding time. Subsequently, regression analysis was introduced to model this relationship between the FFT output and the wind power generation. The effect of conventional generators on the magnitude and frequency of the inter-area oscillation was also considered.

This paper presents the results of a real bridge field experiment in which damage was applied artificially to a steel truss bridge. The aim of this paper is to identify the dynamic parameters of this bridge using conventional techniques and investigate the effect of various damage conditions on those parameters. In the field experiment, acceleration measurements were recorded at a number of locations on the bridge deck. To excite the bridge, a two-axle van was driven across the bridge at constant speed. Dynamic parameters, such as the bridge mode shape, natural frequency and damping constant, are identified from the acceleration signals using existing techniques such as the fast Fourier transform, logarithmic decrement and frequency domain decomposition. The variation of these parameters under the influence of artificially applied damage conditions is investigated in order to evaluate their sensitivity to the bridge damage.

<p>Two case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the impact of different power system operation conditions on the power oscillation frequency modes in the Irish power system. A simplified 2 area equivalent of the Irish power system has been used in this paper, where area 1 represents the Republic of Ireland power system and area 2 represents the Northern Ireland power system.</p><p>The potential power oscillation frequency modes on the interconnector during different operation conditions have been analysed in this paper. The main objective of this paper is to analyse the influence of different operation conditions involving wind turbine generator (WTG) penetration on power oscillation frequency modes using phasor measurement unit (PMU) data.</p><p>Fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis was performed to identify the frequency oscillation mode while correlation coefficient analysis was used to determine the source of the frequency oscillation. The results show that WTG, particularly fixed speed induction generation (FSIG), gives significant contribution to inter-area power oscillation frequency modes during high WTG operation.</p>

MC-CDMA (MultiCarrier Code Division Multiple Access), currently regarded as a promissing multiple access scheme for broadband communications, is known to combine the advantages of an OFDM-based (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), CP-assisted (Cyclic Prefix) block transmission with those of CDMA systems. Recently, it was recognised that DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence) implementations can also take advantage of the beneficts of the CP-assisted block transmission approach, therefore enabling an efficient use of FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform), chip level FDE (Frequency- Domain Equalisation) techniques. In this paper we consider the use of IB-DFE (Iterative Block Decision Feedback Equalisation) FDE techniques within both CP-assisted MC-CDMA systems with frequency-domain spreading and DS-CDMA systems. Our simulation results show that an IB-DFE receiver with moderate complexity is suitable in both cases, with excellent performances that can be close to the single-code matched filter bound (especially for the CP-assisted DSCDMA alternative), even with full code usage.

In this paper, we consider low-PMEPR (Peak-to-Mean Envelope Power Ratio) MC-CDMA (Multicarrier Coded Division Multiple Access) schemes. We develop frequencydomain turbo equalizers combined with an iterative estimation and cancellation of nonlinear distortion effects. Our receivers have relatively low complexity, since they allow FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform) implementations. The proposed turbo receivers allow significant performance improvements at low and moderate SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio), even when a low-PMEPR MC-CDMA transmission is intended.

This paper introduces a novel method of estimating theFourier transform of deterministic continuous-time signals from a finite number N of their nonuniformly spaced measurements. These samples, located at a mixture of deterministic and random time instants, are collected at sub-Nyquist rates since no constraints are imposed on either the bandwidth or the spectral support of the processed signal. It is shown that the proposed estimation approach converges uniformly for all frequencies at the rate N^âˆ5 or faster. This implies that it significantly outperforms its alias-free-sampling-based predecessors, namely stratified and antithetical stratified estimates, which are shown to uniformly convergence at a rate of N^âˆ1. Simulations are presented to demonstrate the superior performance and low complexity of the introduced technique.

In this paper, the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is applied to the spectral bands of two component mixture containing oxfendazole and oxyclozanide to provide the multicomponent quantitative prediction of the related substances. With this aim in mind, the modulus of FrFT spectral bands are processed by the continuous Mexican Hat family of wavelets, being denoted by MEXH-CWT-MOFrFT. Four modulus sets are obtained for the parameter a of the FrFT going from 0.6 up to 0.9 in order to compare their effects upon the spectral and quantitative resolutions. Four linear regression plots for each substance were obtained by measuring the MEXH-CWT-MOFrFT amplitudes in the application of the MEXH family to the modulus of the FrFT. This new combined powerful tool is validated by analyzing the artificial samples of the related drugs, and it is applied to the quality control of the commercial veterinary samples.

The goal of this study is to analyze the dynamical properties of financial data series from nineteen worldwide stock market indices (SMI) during the period 1995â2009. SMI reveal a complex behavior that can be explored since it is available a considerable volume of data. In this paper is applied the window Fourier transform and methods of fractional calculus. The results reveal classification patterns typical of fractional order systems.
