We present results for spatial distributions of weakly-bound three-body systems, derived from a universal scaling function that depends on the mass ratio of the particles, as well as on the nature of the subsystems. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

A search for new exotic particles decaying to the VZ final state is performed, where V is either a W or a Z boson decaying into two overlapping jets and the Z decays into a pair of electrons, muons or neutrinos. The analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s=7 TeV in 2011. No significant excess is observed in the mass distribution of the VZ candidates compared with the background expectation from standard model processes. Model-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to the VZ final state as a function of mass. Sequential standard model W′ bosons with masses between 700 and 940 GeV are excluded. In the Randall-Sundrum model for graviton resonances with a coupling parameter of 0.05, masses between 750 and 880 GeV are also excluded. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

The results of searches for new resonances decaying to a pair of massive vector bosons (WW, WZ, ZZ) are presented. All searches are performed using 5.0 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions, at TeV of center of mass energy, collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess compared to the standard model background expectation is observed, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to a pair of vector bosons. The results are interpreted in the context of several benchmark models, such as the Randall-Sundrum gravitons, the Sequential Standard Model W′, and Technicolor. Graviton resonances in the Randall-Sundrum model with masses smaller than 940 GeV/c2, for coupling parameter k/MPl = 0.05 are excluded. Bulk (ADPS) Randall-Sundrum gravitons with masses smaller than 610 GeV/c2 are excluded, for k/MPl = 0.05. Sequential Standard Model W′ with masses smaller than 1143 GeV/c2 are excluded, as well as ρTC in the 167-687 GeV/c2 mass range, in Low Scale Technicolor models with M(πTC) = 3/4 M(ρTC) - 25 GeV/c2. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The microbiological responses of two bivalves species from Tagus estuary, Venerupis pullastra (native clam) and Ruditapes philippinarum (exotic clam) were investigated during 48h of depuration and subsequent simulated transport in semi-dry conditions at two temperatures (4 and 22°C) until reaching 50% lethal time (LT50). Regardless of temperature and species, the maintenance of clams in water for 48h (depuration period) did not affect LT50 during transport. R.philippinarum showed higher survival rates than V.pullastra, always reaching LT50 later, especially at 4°C. Significant differences between clams' species were found in almost all microbiological parameters. This can be related with clams' biological activity and habitat environmental conditions since both clams do not coexist in Tagus estuary. Depuration was efficient to reduce the bacterial load, particularly Escherichia coli, but not efficient to remove Vibrio spp. In both species, the growth of Vibrio spp. was inhibited at 4°C, whereas exponential growth occurred at 22°C. Total viable counts significantly increased in most treatments, while E.coli counts significantly decreased to undetected levels, except for non-depurated R.philippinarum simulated transported at 4°C. Thus, this study highlights the importance of clams depuration for at least 24h in polluted estuarine areas, followed by transport at low temperatures (4°C). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper is submitted in an effort to acquaint the personnel of allied State agencies with related laws which control the public and private possession of live exotic and native wild animals. The need for this common knowledge of related laws by agencies with law enforcement responsibility is readily apparent when the annual number and related problems from imported or resident wild animals in California are examined. In addition to resident wild animal populations, millions of fish and thousands of mammals, birds, and reptiles enter California each year through the utilization of most methods of transportation. Most of these imported animals are exotic species from foreign lands which cannot be readily identified and pose various degrees of potential and actual threat to native wild life, agriculture, and public health if they are introduced into the wilds of this State. For the purpose of this report, a general picture of imported exotic animals is presented in an introduction, and specific animals with related laws are treated individu-ally under the headings of current laws and future regulations.

Ethanol extracts of powdered genipap (Genipa americana L), umbu (Spondia tuberosa A.) and siriguela (Spondia purpurea L) prepared from separate pulp, seeds and peel were investigated for their (i) antioxidant capacity, which was evaluated by various known methods; (ii) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity; and (iii) cytotoxic effect on corneal epithelial cells of sheep. The highest values of total phenolic content were obtained with peel and seed extracts. Siriguela and umbu (seeds and peel) extracts displayed the highest antioxidant activities. Lipid peroxidation assays using mimetic biomembranes and mouse liver homogenates indicated that genipap pulp is a promising antioxidant. The investigation of phenols and organic acid contents revealed the presence of quercetin, citric and quinic acids, chlorogenic acid derivatives, among others, in several extracts, with the highest amount found in siriguela seeds. Genipap pulp and siriguela seed ethanol extracts presented an AChE inhibition zone similar to that of the positive control, carbachol. AChE inhibition assay with chlorogenic acid, one of the main constituents of siriguela seeds, revealed that this acid showed activity similar to that of the control physostigmine. These data suggest that these extracts are potentially important antioxidant supplements for the everyday human diet, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We use the QCD sum rules to study possible B-c-like molecular states. We consider isoscalar J(P) = 0(+) and J(P) = 1(+) D(*) B(*) molecular currents. We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension eight and we work at leading order in alpha(s). We obtain for these states masses around 7 GeV. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. We raise the possibility that the very dense, compact companion of PSR J1719-1438, which has a Jupiter-like mass, is an exotic quark object rather than a light helium or carbon white dwarf. The exotic hypothesis naturally explains some of the observed features, and provides quite strong predictions for this system, to be confirmed or refuted in feasible future studies.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the exposure of captive wild felids to various infectious pathogens using serological and molecular methods. One hundred and fifty-nine neotropic felids and 51 exotic felids from 28 captive settings in Brazil were tested. While antibodies against Feline parvovirus and Feline coronavirus (FCoV), Feline calicivirus and Bartonella spp. were frequently detected by serologic tests, antibodies against Felid herpesvirus 1 or infection with hemotropic mycoplasmas were less prevalent. Serologic evidence of exposure to Ehrlichia spp., Feline immunodeficiency virus, and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) was detected rarely, and infections with FeLV, Ehrlichia spp., and Cytauxzoon spp. were found infrequently. The detected Bartonella sequence was molecularly similar to B. koehlerae and B. henselae; for Cytauxzoon, the sequence resembled those from domestic cats. No Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Theileria spp. infections were detected. The positive test results varied significantly among different facilities and species. Additionally, FCoV seropositivity was more prevalent in captivity than in free-ranging populations. Results suggest that testing is appropriate prior to relocation of felids.

Invasive exotic species can negatively impact local biodiversity. We present here a report of a nest predation of an endemic bird species, variable oriole (Icterus pyrrhopterus) by the introduced black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata)in an agricultural landscape highly disturbed by human activities. Two nestlings were predated, by adults of the introduced marmoset during two alternate days. Antipredator behavior and vocal mimicry were observed in variable oriole, while copulation was observed in black-tufted marmoset during the predation. The use of mobbing against predators by I. pyrrhopterus was observed and it is described here by the first time. The potential impact of the introduced marmosets to local biodiversity is discussed.
