Because faces and bodies share some abstract perceptual features, we hypothesised that similar recognition processes might be used for both. We investigated whether similar caricature effects to those found in facial identity and expression recognition could be found in the recognition of individual bodies and socially meaningful body positions. Participants were trained to name four body positions (anger, fear, disgust, sadness) and four individuals (in a neutral position). We then tested their recognition of extremely caricatured, moderately caricatured, anticaricatured, and undistorted images of each stimulus. Consistent with caricature effects found in face recognition, moderately caricatured representations of individuals' bodies were recognised more accurately than undistorted and extremely caricatured representations. No significant difference was found between participants' recognition of extremely caricatured, moderately caricatured, or undistorted body position line-drawings. AU anti-caricatured representations were named significandy less accurately than the veridical stimuli. Similar mental representations may be used for both bodies and faces.

A number of survey studies were conducted with landholders throughout Queensland to assess the effectiveness and perceived influence of campaigns promotng sustainable land use. While previous studies have addressed the role of group membership in persuasive communications, the current line of research extends this by focusing on the intergroup context, namely, the perceptions of group status. Across a range of samples it was found that landholders' perceptions of lower status in relation to urban people were associated with increased support for ingroup messages and decreased support for outgroup messages. These results are broadly consistent with research that suggests that threats to group identity (such as an infiuence attempt by a higher status group) will be responded to in a negative way and highlights the importance of considering relations between groups when attempting to change attiutudes.

This Study examines whether cultural identity has an impact on perceptions of foreign management practices and perceptions of organisational climate. Based on social identity theory as a conceptual framework, it is assumed that the salience of cultural identity leads to in-group bias in interpreting organisational events. This study also examines whether managers' accommodative communication behaviour mediates these relationships. In a multinational organisation, employees see the foreign company as a symbol, and the person that deals with them in everyday working relationships in the organisation is their direct leader. It is argued that the salience of cultural identity wiU depend on employees' perceptions of the way managers attach meaning to foreign managerial practices and communicate it to them. Interaction with managers who create a distance with their employees and who fail to Usten to what employees need may be a socially appropriate way to invoke the salience of cultural identity in the working relationship. The participants were 206 Indonesian employees from three multinational organisations. Using a questionnaire, this study shows that participants with strong cultural identity had more negative perceptions of foreign management practices and organisational climate. Furthermore, this study indicates that managers' accommodative communication behaviour mediated these relationships.

Recently, goal orientation, a mental framework for understanding how individuals approach learning and achievement situadons, has emerged as an important predictor of performance. This study addressed the effects of domain-specific avoid and prove orientations on performance from the betweenand within-person levels of analysis. One hundred and three participants performed thirty trials of an airtraffic control task. Domain-specific avoid and prove orientations were measured before each trial to assess the effects of changes in goal orientadon on changes in performance (i.e. within-person relationships). Average levels of avoid and prove orientations were calculated to assess the effect of goal orientation on overall performance (i.e. between-person relationships). Findings from the between-person level of analysis revealed that high prove-orientated individuals performed better than low proveorientated individuals. Results also revealed that average goal orientation levels moderated the withinperson relationships. The effect of changes in avoid orientation on changes in performance was stronger for low versus high avoid-oriented individuals while the effect of changes in prove orientadon on changes in performances was stronger for low versus highprove oriented individuals. Implications of these findings are considered.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are nuclear hormone receptors involved in various metabolic diseases. In the liver, PPARα is involved in alcohol metabolism and may lead to the development of alcoholic fatty liver and other alcohol mediated liver injuries. PPARβ modulation by ethanol induces abnormal myelin production by oligodendrocytes. PPARα and PPARβ are PPAR isoforms expressed in the human breast cell lines. Epidemiological studies show a positive correlation between alcohol intake and breast cancer risk, however, the molecular mechanisms involved are unclear. We hypothesized that ethanol would affect the expression and transactivation of human PPAR isoforms in estrogen receptor (ER) positive and ER negative breast cancer cells. Using real time RT-PCR we looked at the transcription of PPAR isoforms in the presence of increasing concentrations of ethanol and saw isoform and time dependent specific effects. Gene reporter assays enabled us to ascertain the effects of ethanol on ligand-mediated activation of human PPARα and PPARβ at concentrations equivalent to both moderate and chronic alcohol consumption. Ethanol differentially blocked the ligand-mediated activation of both PPARα and PPARβ. Since PPARα and PPARβ are involved in the differentiation and proliferation of breast cancer cells, PPARs may be a possible mechanism involved in the effect of ethanol in breast cancer.

We have previously observed a change in the magnitude of the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) H-reflexes during different sway positions of quiet standing. The purpose of the present study was to extend the earlier finding by examining whether the SOL and MG H-reflexes are additionally influenced by the velocity of sway, i.e., whether the body is swaying in either the forward or backward direction. Five healthy subjects participated in the study. The mean position of the centre of pressure (COP) in the antero-posterior direction was determined while the subject stood quietly on a force plate for 60 s. In contrast to the earlier study, where the H-reflex was tested at the outermost positions of sway (±6 mm from the baseline mean), the current study elicited a SOL and MG H-reflex as the COP passed through the mean position of sway. This resulted in two sway conditions, where the position of the COP was the same but the sway velocity was different (10 mm s-1 forward and 10 mm s-1 backward). During the forward as compared to the backward velocity condition, there was a 20% and 25% increase in the amplitude of the H-reflex for the SOL and MG muscles, respectively, while the size of their respective background activities were the same. SOL and MG M-waves, as well as the level of background activity from the antagonist (tibialis anterior), were not different between the two sway conditions and thus cannot account for the observed changes to the amplitude of the H-reflexes. It can be concluded from these results that the direction (velocity) of sway has the ability to influence the size of the SOL and MG H-reflexes. The facilitation of the SOL and MG H-reflexes observed while swaying forward may be due to a reduction in presynaptic inhibition or an improvement in Ia synaptic efficacy brought about by changes in muscle length.
