White matter microstructure is under strong genetic control, yet it is largely unknown how genetic influences change from childhood into adulthood. In one of the largest brain mapping studies ever performed, we determined whether the genetic control over white matter architecture depends on age, sex, socioeconomic status (SES), and intelligence quotient (IQ). We assessed white matter integrity voxelwise using diffusion tensor imaging at high magnetic field (4-Tesla), in 705 twins and their siblings (age range 12-29; 290. M/415. F). White matter integrity was quantified using a widely accepted measure, fractional anisotropy (FA). We fitted gene-environment interaction models pointwise, to visualize brain regions where age, sex, SES and IQ modulate heritability of fiber integrity. We hypothesized that environmental factors would start to outweigh genetic factors during late childhood and adolescence. Genetic influences were greater in adolescence versus adulthood, and greater in males than in females. Socioeconomic status significantly interacted with genes that affect fiber integrity: heritability was higher in those with higher SES. In people with above-average IQ, genetic factors explained over 80% of the observed FA variability in the thalamus, genu, posterior internal capsule, and superior corona radiata. In those with below-average IQ, however, only around 40% FA variability in the same regions was attributable to genetic factors. Genes affect fiber integrity, but their effects vary with age, sex, SES and IQ. Gene-environment interactions are vital to consider in the search for specific genetic polymorphisms that affect brain integrity and connectivity.

In view of the important need to generate well-dispersed inorganic nanostructures in various solvents, we have explored the dispersion of nanostructures of metal oxides such as TiO2, Fe3O4 and ZnO in solvents of differing polarity in the presence of several surfactants. The solvents used are water, dimethylformamide (DMF) and toluene. The surfactant-solvent combinations yielding the best dispersions are reported alongwith some of the characteristics of the nanostructures in the dispersions. The surfactants which dispersed TiO2 nanowires in water were polyethylene oxide (PEO), Triton X-100 (TX-100), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulphosuccinate (AOT). TiO2 nanoparticles could also be dispersed with AOT and PEO in water, and with AOT in toluene. In DMF, PVA, PEO and TX-100 were found to be effective, while in toluene, only AOT gave good dispersions. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were held for long periods of time in water by PEO, AOT, PVA and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and by AOT in toluene. In the case of ZnO nanowires, the best surfactant-solvent combinations were found to be, PEO, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SIDS) and AOT in water and AOT, PEG, PVA, PEO and TX-100 in DMF In toluene, stable dispersions of ZnO nanowires were obtained with PEO. We have also been able to disperse oxide nanostructures in non-polar solvents by employing a hydrophobic silane coating on the surface.

This symbolic study of "St.Cyprien" concentration camp life done while Nussbaum was interned there in France. It is inscribed "Entwurf zu einem Gemälde" (Study for a painting) at lower left corner. It shows a group of men huddled around a globe or hunched in isolation against a desolate background of barren land and barbed wire. The drawing is one of the most artistically powerful and technically perfect in the collection.

We obtained the images of the eastern part of the solar corona in the Fe xiv 530.3 nm (green) and Fe x 637.4 nm (red) coronal emission lines during the total solar eclipse of 29 March 2006 at Manavgat, Antalya, Turkey. The images were obtained using a 35 cm Meade telescope equipped with a Peltier-cooled 2k x 2k CCD and 0.3 nm pass-band interference filters at the rates of 2.95 s (exposure times of 100 ms) and 2.0 s (exposure times of 300 ms) in the Fe xiv and Fe x emission lines,respectively. The analysis of the data indicates intensity variations at some locations with period of strongest power around 27 s for the green line and 20 s for the red line. These results confirm earlier findings of variations in the continuum intensity with periods in the range of 5 to 56 s by Singh et al. (Solar Phys. 170, 235, 1997). The wavelet analysis has been used to identify significant intensity oscillations at all pixels within our field of view. Significant oscillations with high probability estimates were detected for some locations only. These locations seem to follow the boundary of an active region and in the neighborhood, rather than within the loops themselves. These intensity oscillations may be caused by fast magneto-sonic waves in the solar corona and partly account for heating of the plasma in the corona.

Further purification of indoleacetaldoxime (IAOX) hydro-lyase from Gibberella fujikuroi by DEAE-cellulose chromatography is described. The purified enzyme was activated by dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), ascorbic acid (AA), and pyridoxal phosphate (PALP) and was inhibited by thiol compounds and thiol reagents including phenylthiocyanate. Ferrous ions but not ferric ions activated the purified enzyme. The enzyme was activated by dihydrofolic acid but inhibited by tetrahydrofolic acid. Phenylacetaldoxime, a competitive inhibitor, afforded partial protection of the enzyme from the action of N-ethylmaleimide suggesting the involvement of a thiol function at the active site or substrate-binding site. The inhibition of the enzyme by 2,3-dimercaptopropanol was reversed by DHA, PALP, or frozen storage. KCN inhibition of the enzyme was reversed by PALP. NaBH4 reduction of the purified enzyme in the presence of PALP gave an active enzyme which was further activated by PALP or DHA but not by ferrous ions. These results suggested a "structural" role for PALP in the activity of IAOX hydro-lyase. Dilute solutions of the purified enzyme, obtained during DEAE-cellulose chromatography and concentrated using sucrose, showed enhanced activity upon frozen storage and thawing. The increase in activity of the enzyme during certain culture conditions, the activation and inhibition of the enzyme by several unrelated compounds, and the effect of freezing indicate that IAOX hydro-lyase is probably a metabolically regulated enzyme with a structure composed of subunits.
