In 2004, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302 (Arctic Coring Expedition, ACEX) to the Lomonosov Ridge drilled the first Central Arctic Ocean sediment record reaching the uppermost Cretaceous (~430 m composite depth). While the Neogene part of the record is characterized by grayish-yellowish siliciclastic material, the Paleogene part is dominated by biosiliceous black shale-type sediments. The lithological transition between Paleogene and Neogene deposits was initially interpreted as a single sedimentological unconformity (hiatus) of ~26 Ma duration, separating Eocene from Miocene strata. More recently, however, continuous sedimentation on Lomonosov Ridge throughout the Cenozoic was proclaimed, questioning the existence of a hiatus. In this context, we studied the elemental and mineralogical sediment composition around the Paleogene-Neogene transition at high resolution to reconstruct variations in the depositional regime (e.g. wave/current activity, detrital provenance, and bottom water redox conditions). Already below the hiatus, mineralogical and geochemical proxies imply drastic changes in sediment provenance and/or weathering intensity in the hinterland, and point to the existence of another, earlier gap in the sediment record. The sediments directly overlying the hiatus (the Zebra interval) are characterized by pronounced and abrupt compositional changes that suggest repeated erosion and re-deposition of material. Regarding redox conditions, euxinic bottom waters prevailed at the Eocene Lomonosov Ridge, and became even more severe directly before the hiatus. With detrital sedimentation rates decreasing, authigenic trace metals were highly enriched in the sediment. This continuous authigenic trace metal enrichment under persistent euxinia implies that the Arctic trace metal pool was renewed continuously by water mass exchange with the world ocean, so the Eocene Arctic Ocean was not fully restricted. Above the hiatus, extreme positive Ce anomalies are clear signs of a periodically well-oxygenated water column, but redox conditions were highly variable during deposition of the Zebra interval. Significant Mn enrichments only occur above the Zebra interval, documenting the Miocene establishment of stable oxic conditions in the Arctic Ocean. In summary, extreme and abrupt changes in geochemistry and mineralogy across the studied sediment section do not suggest continuous sedimentation at the Lomonosov Ridge around the Eocene-Miocene transition, but imply repeated periods of very low sedimentation rates and/or erosion.

The tops of the Emperor chain guyots, which were drilled during Leg 55, lie above the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), as well as above the foraminiferal dissolution level, i.e., lysocline. They are therefore the sites of accumulation of pelagic foraminiferal nannofossil ooze, such accumulation having taken place here since the moment of the seamounts' subsidence and the termination of shallow-water carbonate accumulation which was formerly developed on their tops. But the existence of strong bottom currents over the tops and slope scarps limits, and at some places reduces to zero, sedimentation of any pelagic particles. At such areas there are formed thick iron-manganese crusts. The seamounts drilled on Leg 55 are within the northern (Boreal) belt of biogenic silica accumulation, which existed in the northern Pacific throughout the Neogene. This circumstance presupposes a possible enrichment of the relatively fine-grained sediments with biogenic silica - diatoms and radiolarians.

Recent rapid climate warming at the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) results in elevated glacial melting, enhanced sedimentary run-off, increased turbidity and impact of ice-scouring in shallow coastal areas. Discharge of mineral suspension from volcanic bedrock ablation and chronic physical disturbance is expected to influence sessile filter feeders such as the Antarctic soft shell clam Laternula elliptica ( King and Broderip, 1832). We investigated effects of sedimentary run-off on the accumulation of trace metals, and together with physical disturbance, the cumulative effect on oxidative stress parameters in younger and older L. elliptica from two stations in Potter Cove (King George Island, Antarctica) which are distinctly impacted by turbidity and ice-scouring. Fe, Mn, Sr, V and Zn concentrations were slightly higher in sediments of the station receiving more sediment run-off, but not enriched in bivalves of this station. The only element that increased in bivalves experimentally exposed to sediment suspension for 28 days was Mn. Concentration of the waste accumulation biomarker lipofuscin in nervous tissue was higher in L. elliptica from the "exposed" compared to the "less exposed" site, whereas protein carbonyl levels in bivalve mantle tissue were higher at the less sediment impacted site. Tissue metal content and lipofuscin in nervous tissue were generally higher in older compared to younger individuals from both field stations. We conclude that elevated sediment ablation does not per se result in higher metal accumulation in L. elliptica. Instead of direct absorbance from sediment particles, metal accumulation in gills seems to indicate uptake of compounds dissolved in the water column, whereas metals in digestive gland appear to originate from enriched planktonic or detritic food. Accumulation of cellular waste products and potentially reactive metals over lifetime presumably alters L. elliptica physiological performance with age and may contribute to higher stress susceptibility in older animals.

The book is devoted to investigations of benthic fauna and geology of the Southern Atlantic Ocean. These works have been carried out in terms of exploring biological structure of the ocean and are of great importance for development of this fundamental problem. They are based on material collected during Cruise 43 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov in 1985-1986 and Cruise 43 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev in 1989. Problems of quantitative distribution, group composition and trophic structure of benthos in the Southern Scotia Sea, along the east-west Transatlantic section along 31°30'S, and offshore Namibia in the area of the Benguela upwelling are under consideration in the book. Authors present new data on fauna of several groups of deep-sea bottom animals and their zoogeography. Much attention is paid to analysis of morphological structure of the Scotia Sea floor considered in terms of plate tectonics. Bottom sediments along the Transatlantic section and facial variation of sediments in the area of South Shetland Islands and of the continental margin of Namibia are under consideration.

The cyclic development of anoxic conditions in the eastern Mediterranean deep sea waters is one of the most fascinating research topics in paleoceanographic studies. In combination with bottom water stagnation, enhanced primary production is a common explanation for the deposition of organic-rich layers (sapropels). This is supported by extensive evidence from both geochemical and micropaleontological studies. The correspondence of recent sapropel layers with peaks of the lower photic zone coccolithophore species Florisphaera profunda has been interpreted as a proxy for the development of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), due to the pycnocline/nutricline shallowing into the lower part of the photic zone. We present millennial-scale data for coccolithophore assemblages from sediments across the most recent sapropel (S1), in the ODP Hole 964B drilled in the Ionian Sea. Relative and absolute abundances of taxa are compared with selected elemental composition of the bulk sediments. The Mn/Al and Ba/Al profiles are used to determine the original thickness of the S1 interval, and show that the upper part of S1 was affected by post-depositional oxidation of organic matter. The Nannofossil Accumulation Rate, defined by the number of coccoliths/cm**2/kyr, suggests that there is no evidence of increased productivity within most of the sapropel layer. In fact, coccolithophore production was at its minimum in the lower part. Minimum coccolith concentrations are reached despite the increase in F. profunda in both relative and absolute abundance. We suggest that the DCM deduced from the increased productivity of this species did not significantly contribute to the putative overall increased primary productivity during the deposition of most of the sapropel layer. Within the upper oxidized part of S1, coccolith accumulation was at least five times higher than in the lower part. This period of high coccolith productivity finds a counterpart in the increase of the Ba/Al ratio. The total concentration of coccoliths is again controlled by the amount of E. huxleyi, but it is also supported by concomitant increases in all the other groups, suggesting that coccolithophore productivity increased throughout the year and through the total vertical extent of the photic zone. At site 964, this is apparently the only moment when coccolithophores contributed substantially to the increased primary productivity generally assumed for the S1 layer.

The concentrations of mercury (Hg) and other trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ba, Re, U) and the Hg isotopic composition were examined across a dramatic redox and productivity transition in a mid-Pleistocene Mediterranean Sea sapropel sequence. Characteristic trace metal enrichment in organic-rich layers was observed, with organic-rich sapropel layers ranging in Hg concentration from 314 to 488 ng/g (avg = 385), with an average enrichment in Hg by a factor of 5.9 compared to organic-poor background sediments, which range from 39 to 94 ng/g Hg (avg = 66). Comparison of seawater concentrations and sapropel accumulations of trace metals suggests that organic matter quantitatively delivers Hg to the seafloor. Near complete scavenging of Hg from the water column renders the sapropel Hg isotopic composition representative of mid-Pleistocene Mediterranean seawater. Sapropels have an average d202Hg value of -0.91 per mil ± 0.15 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD) and D199Hg value of 0.11 per mil ± 0.03 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD). Background sediments have an average d202Hg of -0.76 per mil ± 0.16 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD) and D199Hg of 0.05 per mil ± 0.01 per mil (n = 5, 1 SD), which is indistinguishable from the sapropel values. We suggest that the sapropel isotopic composition is most representative of the mid-Pleistocene Tyrrhenian Sea.

In the collective monograph results of geological and geophysical studies in the Tadjura Rift carried out by conventional outboard instruments and from deep/sea manned submersibles "Pisces" in winter 1983-1984 are reported. Main features of rift tectonics, geology, petrology, and geochemistry of basalts from the rift are under consideration. An emphasis is made on lithology, stratigraphy, and geochemistry of bottom sediments. Roles of terrigenous, edafogenic, biogenic, and hydrothermal components in formation of bottom sediments from the rift zone are shown.

The bulk rock geochemistry and inoceramid isotopic composition from Cenomanian to Santonian, finely laminated, organic-rich black shales, recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 207 on Demerara Rise (western tropical North Atlantic), suggest persistent anoxic (free H2S) conditions within the sediments and short-term variations within a narrow range of anoxic to episodically dysoxic bottom waters over a ~15 Ma time interval. In addition to being organic-rich, the 50-90 m thick sections examined exhibit substantial bulk rock enrichments of Si, P, Ba, Cu, Mo, Ni, and Zn relative to World Average Shale. These observations point to high organic burial fluxes, likely driven by high primary production rates, which led to the establishment of intensely sulfidic pore waters and possibly bottom waters, as well as to the enrichments of Cr, Mo, U, and V in the sediments. At the same time, the irregular presence of benthic inoceramids and foraminifera in this facies demonstrates that the benthic environment could not have been continuously anoxic. The d13C and d15N values of the inoceramid shell organics provide no evidence of chemosymbiosis and are consistent with pelagic rain as being a significant food source. Demerara Rise inoceramids also exhibit well-defined, regularly spaced growth lines that are tracked by d13C and d18O variations in shell carbonate that cannot be simply explained by diagenesis. Instead, productivity variations in surface waters may have paced the growth of the shells during brief oxygenation events suitable for benthic inoceramid settlement. These inferences imply tight benthopelagic coupling and more dynamic benthic conditions than generally portrayed during black shale deposition. By invoking different temporal scales for geochemical and paleontological data, this study resolves recent contradictory conclusions (e.g., sulfidic sedimentary conditions versus dysoxic to suboxic benthic waters) drawn from studies of either sediment geochemistry or fossil distributions alone on Demerara Rise. This variability may be relevant for discussions of black shales in general.

Kikuchi diffraction was used to accurately determine the orientation relationship (OR) between Mg17Al12 precipitates and matrix in an AZ91D alloy. For both continuous and discontinuous precipitations, the Burgers OR and the Potter OR were equally observed. The lattice parameter of Mg17Al12 associated with the former is bigger than that of the latter. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The literature dealing with the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of unalloyed copper in aqueous chloride media is examined. The enormous quantity of polarisation and mixed/corrosion potential data that has been made available in the literature over the last 50 years has been compiled and discussed in a comprehensive review. For a wide range of electrode geometries, the importance of the chloride ion and the mass transport of anodic corrosion products on the corrosion behaviour of copper are made clear for both freshly polished and 'filmed' surfaces. The corrosion behaviour of die cast magnesium alloy AZ91D aged at 160degreesC was investigated. The corrosion rate of the alloy decreases with ageing time in the initial stages and then increases again at ageing times greater than 45 h. The dependence of the corrosion rate on ageing time can be related to the changes in microstructure and local composition during ageing. Precipitation of the beta phase (Mg17Al12) occurs exclusively along the grain boundaries during ageing. The beta phase acts as a barrier, resulting in a decreasing corrosion rate in the initial stages of ageing. In the later stages, the decreasing aluminium content of alpha grains makes the alpha matrix more active, causing an increase in the corrosion rate. Electrochemical testing results also confirm the combined effects of the changes in alpha and beta phases on the corrosion resistance of the aged die cast AZ91D alloy. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Modification of cell wall components such as cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin plays an important role in cell expansion. Cell expansion is known to be diminished by cations but it is unknown if this results from cations reacting with pectin or other cell wall components. Autolysis of cell wall material purified from bean root (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) occurred optimally at pH 5.0 and released mainly neutral sugars but very little uronic acid. Autolytic release of neutral sugars and uronic acid was decreased when cell wall material was loaded with Ca, Cu, Sr, Zn, Al or La cations. Results were also extended to a metal-pectate model system, which behaved similarly to cell walls and these cations also inhibited the enzymatic degradation by added polygalacturonase (EC 3.2.1.15). The extent of sugar release from cation-loaded cell wall material and pectate gels was related to the degree of cation saturation of the substrate, but not to the type of cation. The binding strength of the cations was assessed by their influence on the buffer capacity of the cell wall and pectate. The strongly bound cations (Cu, Al or La) resulted in higher cation saturation of the substrate and decreased enzymatic degradability than the weakly held cations (Ca, Sr and Zn). The results indicate that the junction zones between pectin molecules can peel open with weakly held cations, allowing polygalacturonase to cleave the hairy region of pectin, while strongly bound cations or high concentrations of cations force the junction zone closed, minimising enzymatic attack on the pectin backbone. The thickness, chemical composition and microstructure of anodised coatings formed on magnesium alloy AZ91D at various anodising current densities were measured. It was found that all these parameters could be affected by anodising current density, and hence the coatings formed at different anodising current densities had different corrosion resistances. This suggests that the corrosion performance of an anodised coating could be improved if a properly designed current waveform is used for anodising. In addition, based on the experimental results, some physical, chemical and electrochemical reactions involved in the anodising process were proposed to explain the anodising behaviour in this paper. The deoxidation of steel with complex deoxidisers was studied at 1550°C and compared with silicon, aluminium and silicon/aluminium alloys as standards. The deoxidation alloy systems, Ca/Si/Al, Mg/Si/Al and Mn/Si/Al, were chosen for the low liquidus temperatures of many of their oxide mixtures and the potential deoxidising power of their constituent elements. Product separation rates and compositional relationships following deoxidation were examined. Silicon/aluminium alloy deoxidation resulted in the product compositions and residual oxygen contents expected from equilibrium and stoichiometric considerations, but with the Ca/Si/Al and Mg/Si/Al alloys the volatility of calcium and magnesium prevented them participating in the final solute equilibrium, despite their reported solubility in liquid iron. Electron-probe microanalysis of the products showed various concentrations of lime and magnesia, possibly resulting from reaction between the metal vapours and dissolved oxygen. The consequent reduction of silica activity in the products due to the presence of CaO and hgO produced an indirect effect of calcium and magnesium on the residual oxygen content. Product separation rates, indicated by vacuum fusion analyses, were not significantly influenced by calcium and magnesium but the rapid separation of products having a high Al2O3Si02 ratio was confirmed. Manganese participated in deoxidation, when present either as an alloying element in the steel or as a deoxidation alloy constituent. The compositions of initial oxide products were related to deoxidation alloy compositions. Separated products which were not alumina saturated, dissolved crucible material to achieve saturation. The melt equilibrated with this slag and crucible by diffusion to determine the residual oxygen content. MnO and SiO2 activities were calculated, and the approximate values of MnO deduced for the compositions obtained. Separation rates were greater for products of high interfacial tension. The rates calculated from a model based on Stoke's Law, showed qualitative agreement with experimental data when corrected for coalescence effects.

We present results of an inorganic geochemical pore water and sediment study conducted on Quaternary sediments from the western Arctic Ocean. The sediment cores were recovered in 2008 from the southern Mendeleev Ridge during RV Polarstern Expedition ARK-XXIII/3. With respect to sediment sources and depositional processes, peaks in Ca/Al, Mg/Al, Sr/Al and Sr/Mg indicate enhanced input of both ice-rafted (mainly dolomite) and biogenic carbonate during deglacial warming phases. Distinct and repetitive brown layers enriched in Mn (oxyhydr)oxides occur mostly in association with these carbonate-rich intervals. For the first time, we show that the brown layers are also consistently enriched in scavenged trace metals Co, Cu, Mo and Ni. The bioturbation patterns of the brown layers, specifically well-defined brown burrows into the underlying sediments, support formation close to the sediment-water interface. The Mn and trace metal enrichments were probably initiated under warmer climate conditions. Both river runoff and melting sea ice delivered trace metals to the Arctic Ocean, but also enhanced seasonal productivity and organic matter export to the sea floor. As Mn (oxyhydr)oxides and scavenged trace metals were deposited at the sea floor, a co-occurring organic matter "pulse" triggered intense diagenetic Mn cycling at the sediment-water interface. These processes resulted in the formation of Mn and trace metal enrichments, but almost complete organic matter degradation. As warmer conditions ceased, reduced riverine runoff and/or a solid sea ice cover terminated the input of riverine trace metal and fresh organic matter, and greyish-yellowish sediments poor in Mn and trace metals were deposited. Oxygen depletion of Arctic bottom waters as potential cause for the lack of Mn enrichments during glacial intervals is highly improbable. While the original composition and texture of the brown layers resulted from specific climatic conditions (including transient Mn redox cycling at the sediment-water interface), pore water data show that early diagenetic Mn redistribution is still affecting the organic-poor sediments in several meters depth. Given persistent steady state diagenetic conditions, purely authigenic Mn-rich brown layers may form, while others may completely vanish. The degree of diagenetic Mn redistribution largely depends on the depositional environment within the Arctic Ocean, the availability of Mn and organic matter, and seems to be recorded by the Co/Mo ratios of single Mn-rich layers. We conclude that brown Arctic sediment layers are not necessarily synchronous features, and correlating them across different parts of the Arctic Ocean without additional age control is not recommended.
