The topic of this dissertation lies in the intersection of harmonic analysis and fractal geometry. We particulary consider singular integrals in Euclidean spaces with respect to general measures, and we study how the geometric structure of the measures affects certain analytic properties of the operators. The thesis consists of three research articles and an overview. In the first article we construct singular integral operators on lower dimensional Sierpinski gaskets associated with homogeneous Calderón-Zygmund kernels. While these operators are bounded their principal values fail to exist almost everywhere. Conformal iterated function systems generate a broad range of fractal sets. In the second article we prove that many of these limit sets are porous in a very strong sense, by showing that they contain holes spread in every direction. In the following we connect these results with singular integrals. We exploit the fractal structure of these limit sets, in order to establish that singular integrals associated with very general kernels converge weakly. Boundedness questions consist a central topic of investigation in the theory of singular integrals. In the third article we study singular integrals of different measures. We prove a very general boundedness result in the case where the two underlying measures are separated by a Lipshitz graph. As a consequence we show that a certain weak convergence holds for a large class of singular integrals.

The estimation of the frequency of a sinusoidal signal is a well researched problem. In this work we propose an initialization scheme to the popular dichotomous search of the periodogram peak algorithm(DSPA) that is used to estimate the frequency of a sinusoid in white gaussian noise. Our initialization is computationally low cost and gives the same performance as the DSPA, while reducing the number of iterations needed for the fine search stage. We show that our algorithm remains stable as we reduce the number of iterations in the fine search stage. We also compare the performance of our modification to a previous modification of the DSPA and show that we enhance the performance of the algorithm with our initialization technique.

In [8], we recently presented two computationally efficient algorithms named B-RED and P-RED for random early detection. In this letter, we present the mathematical proof of convergence of these algorithms under general conditions to local minima.

"The book brings together experts from Media and Communication Studies with Postcolonial Studies scholars to illustrate how the two fields may challenge and enrich each other. Its essays introduce readers to selected topics including »Media Convergence«, »Transcultural Subjectivity«, »Hegemony«, »Piracy« and »Media History and Colonialism«. Drawing on examples from film, literature, music, TV and the internet, the contributors investigate the transnational dimensions in today's media, engage with local and global media politics and discuss media outlets as economic agents, thus illustrating mechanisms of power in postcolonial and neo-colonial mediascapes."--Publisher website

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. Despite positive testing in animal studies, more than 80% of novel drug candidates fail to proof their efficacy when tested in humans. This is primarily due to the use of preclinical models that are not able to recapitulate the physiological or pathological processes in humans. Hence, one of the key challenges in the field of translational medicine is to “make the model organism mouse more human.” To get answers to questions that would be prognostic of outcomes in human medicine, the mouse's genome can be altered in order to create a more permissive host that allows the engraftment of human cell systems. It has been shown in the past that these strategies can improve our understanding of tumor immunology. However, the translational benefits of these platforms have still to be proven. In the 21st century, several research groups and consortia around the world take up the challenge to improve our understanding of how to humanize the animal's genetic code, its cells and, based on tissue engineering principles, its extracellular microenvironment, its tissues, or entire organs with the ultimate goal to foster the translation of new therapeutic strategies from bench to bedside. This article provides an overview of the state of the art of humanized models of tumor immunology and highlights future developments in the field such as the application of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies to further enhance humanized murine model systems.

A highly sensitive and specific reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (RT-PCR-ELISA) was developed for the objective detection of nucleoprotein (N) gene of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus from field outbreaks or experimentally infected sheep. Two primers (IndF and Np4) and one probe (Sp3) available or designed for the amplification/probing of the 'N' gene of PPR virus, were chosen for labeling and use in RT-PCR-ELISA based on highest analytical sensitivity of detection of infective virus or N-gene containing recombinant plasmid, higher nucleotide homology at the primer binding sites of the 'N' gene sequences available and the ability to amplify PPR viral genome from different sources of samples. RT-PCR was performed with unlabeled IndF and Np4 digoxigenin labeled primers followed by a microplate hybridization probe reaction with biotin labeled Sp3 probe. RT-PCR-ELISA was found to be 10-fold more sensitive than the conventional RT-PCR followed by agarose gel based detection of PCR product. Based on the Mean (mean +/- 3S.D.) optical density (OD) values of 47 RT-PCR negative samples, OD values above 0.306 were considered positive in RT-PCR-ELISA. A total of 82 oculo-nasal swabs and tissue samples from suspected PPR cases were analyzed by RT-PCR and RT-PCR-ELISA, which revealed 54.87 and 58.54% positivity, respectively. From an experimentally infected sheep, both RT-PCR and RT-PCR-ELISA could detect the virus from 6 days post-infection up to 9 days in oculo-nasal swabs. On post-mortem, PPR viral genome was detected in spleen, lymph node, lung, heart and liver. The correlation co-efficient between RT-PCR-ELISA OD values and either TCID50 of virus or molecules of DNA was 0.622 and 0.657, respectively. The advantages of RT-PCR-ELISA over the conventional agarose gel based detection of RT-PCR products are discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It is well known that the numerical accuracy of a series solution to a boundary-value problem by the direct method depends on the technique of approximate satisfaction of the boundary conditions and on the stage of truncation of the series. On the other hand, it does not appear to be generally recognized that, when the boundary conditions can be described in alternative equivalent forms, the convergence of the solution is significantly affected by the actual form in which they are stated. The importance of the last aspect is studied for three different techniques of computing the deflections of simply supported regular polygonal plates under uniform pressure. It is also shown that it is sometimes possible to modify the technique of analysis to make the accuracy independent of the description of the boundary conditions.
