Esta tese descreve um projeto desenvolvido na sua maioria durante o segundo semestre do ano letivo 2013/2014 nas instalações da Bosch Security Systems ST em Ovar, uma empresa do Grupo Bosch. Este projeto resultou de uma cooperação existente entre a Avans University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) e o Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), bem como entre a fábrica Bosch ST Ovar e o Centro de Desenvolvimento Bosch situado em Eindhoven, Holanda. O objetivo é o estudo dos processos colaborativos de comunicação que se realizam entre a R&D (Research and Development/Centro de Desenvolvimento) e a MP (Manufacturing Plant/Fábrica). O sucesso das organizações empresariais só é possível se se alcançar a satisfação das expectativas do mercado. Assim, para o sucesso de uma empresa, temos de ter em conta a sua eficiência para conseguir obter o máximo rendimento da sua missão, que só é possível através de comunicações e de processos produtivos/serviços que acrescentem valor ao bem que disponibilizam. Tendo sempre em vista este princípio, o Grupo Bosch tem vindo a adotar metodologias com o intuito de eliminar os desperdícios existentes nos seus negócios aumentando o máximo possível os seus rendimentos. O desafio foi encontrar problemas ou dificuldades que levam com que a comunicação não seja realizada eficazmente, o que origina, na maioria dos casos, atrasos nos projetos realizados nesta parceria. Com a orientação do diretor técnico da fábrica e observando o trabalho realizado por 2 MBI’s (Manufacturing Business Interface), iniciou-se a compreensão do meio e os métodos de trabalho da empresa, a forma como é que é feita a parceria com os centros de desenvolvimento, como também as responsabilidades e funções de cada um. O estudo desenvolvido teve como base a metodologia Soft Systems Methodology com envolvimento de um questionário submetido aos colaboradores Bosch, realizando-se no final as sugestões de melhoria. Este relatório apresenta assim o estudo dos processos colaborativos e de comunicação entre a fábrica e o centro de desenvolvimento.

Harnessing idle PCs CPU cycles, storage space and other resources of networked computers to collaborative are mainly fixated on for all major grid computing research projects. Most of the university computers labs are occupied with the high puissant desktop PC nowadays. It is plausible to notice that most of the time machines are lying idle or wasting their computing power without utilizing in felicitous ways. However, for intricate quandaries and for analyzing astronomically immense amounts of data, sizably voluminous computational resources are required. For such quandaries, one may run the analysis algorithms in very puissant and expensive computers, which reduces the number of users that can afford such data analysis tasks. Instead of utilizing single expensive machines, distributed computing systems, offers the possibility of utilizing a set of much less expensive machines to do the same task. BOINC and Condor projects have been prosperously utilized for solving authentic scientific research works around the world at a low cost. In this work the main goal is to explore both distributed computing to implement, Condor and BOINC, and utilize their potency to harness the ideal PCs resources for the academic researchers to utilize in their research work. In this thesis, Data mining tasks have been performed in implementation of several machine learning algorithms on the distributed computing environment.

This article describes a study that investigated the main strategic drivers that influence the implementation of sustainability/social responsibility programs. An online survey was administered to managers of Portuguese organizations with certified management systems. The findings suggest that the implementation of such programs is mainly correlated to: 1.) the approach to understanding and working toward the satisfaction of the community’s needs (in the broad sense of social responsibility); 2.) how systematically sustainability within the organization is identified and managed (e.g., pollution prevention, improved environmental performance, and compliance with the applicable environmental laws); and 3.) the degree to which the organization tries to understand the needs of the employees and works toward satisfying them. In addition to the survey, five interviews with top managers of the surveyed organizations provided some useful insights. There was no consensus on the meaning of sustainability and social responsibility: some described it as an instrumental approach for obtaining better organizational results, while others regarded it as the right thing to do (i.e., it is values driven). In all cases, however, the managers supported a kind of umbrella construct under which different size corporations use different models (for example, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), ISO 14001 environmental management systems), although some managers reported that they simply do not know what to do. All of those surveyed agreed that the lack of a systematic approach could represent a major threat to their organization, making them willing to pay more attention and take more action on the issue of sustainability. An additional suggestion made by managers was to change from a triple bottom line (economic dimension, environmental dimension, social equity dimension) to a quadruple bottom line by adding another dimension: personal and family happiness. This fourth dimension was recognized by the Greek philosopher/thinker Aristotle (384-322 BCE) who thought of happiness as the highest good (virtue) and ultimate goal and purpose of life, achieved through living well, in harmony. Such harmony suggests a balance and a lack of excess—in other words a sustainable existence.

The project started in 2009 with the support of DAAD in Germany and CRUP in Portugal under the “Collaborative German-Portuguese University Actions” programme. One central goal is the further development of a theory of technology assessment applied to robotics and autonomous systems in general that reflects in its methodology the changing conditions of knowledge production in modern societies and the emergence of new robotic technologies and of associated disruptive changes. Since the middle of the first decade of this century, several authors have announced the dawn of a new Age, following the Information/ Knowledge Age (1970-2005?). We are certainly living in a Shift Age (Houle, 2007), but no standard designation has been broadly adopted so far, and others, such as Conceptual Age (Pink, 2005) or Social Age (Azua, 2009), are only some of the proposals to name current times. Due to the amount of information available nowadays, meaning making and understanding seem to be common features of this new age of change; change related to (i) how individuals and organizations engage with each other, to (ii) the way we deal with technology, to (iii) how we engage and communicate within communities to create meaning, i.e., also social networking-driven changes. The Web 2.0 and the social networks have strongly altered the way we learn, live, work and, of course, communicate. Within all the possible dimensions we could address this change, we chose to focus on language – a taken-for-granted communication tool, used, translated and recreated in personal and geographical variants, by the many users and authors of the social networks and other online communities and platforms. In this paper, we discuss how the Web 2.0, and specifically social networks, have contributed to changes in the communication process and, in bi- or multilingual environments, to the evolution and freeware use of the so called “international language”: English. Next, we discuss some of the impacts and challenges of this language diversity in international communication in the shift age of understanding and social networking, focusing on specialized networks. Then we point out some skills and strategies to avoid babelization and to build meaningful and effective content in mono or multilingual networks, through the use of common and shared concepts and designations in social network environments. For this purpose, we propose a social and collaborative approach to terminology management, as a shared, strategic and sense making tool for specialized communication in Web 2.0 environments.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to discuss the impact of Supplier orientation and the resulting Supply Chain Management (SCM) approach, on the organizational performance of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems certified organizations. Methodology/Approach: Following a literature review, a full structural conceptual model was proposed. An online survey was administered to managers of Portuguese organizations with certified ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems. Descriptive Statistics and Structural Model Equations were used to validate the proposed conceptual model. Findings: There are positive relationships between Organization Strategy and Supplier Orientation, between Supplier Orientation and Stakeholders Satisfaction, and between Stakeholders Satisfaction and Organizational Performance Orientation, supporting ISO 9001:2015. These findings provide insights that supplier orientation, mediated by stakeholder satisfaction, is an essential tool for organizational competitive sustainable advantage. Research Limitation/implication: The analysis was based on managers of ISO 9001 certified organizations perceptions, so additional studies with actual data and longitudinal studies should be useful for further validation. Originality/Value of paper: The importance of the overall organizational ecosystem is highlighted with potential impact on the more than 1 Million ISO 9001 organizations certified worldwide and in their suppliers.

Na atualidade, face à emergência de políticas educacionais influenciadas pela globalização, a avaliação das instituições escolares tem vindo a constituir-se como um instrumento para regular, garantir e acompanhar a melhoria da qualidade nos sistemas de ensino. A Lei nº31/2002 de 20 de dezembro implicou nas escolas o desenvolvimento de dispositivos, instrumentos e processos diversos de avaliação tendo como um dos seus objetivos a promoção da melhoria de qualidade do sistema educativo. Não é qualquer forma ou modalidade de avaliação institucional e de autoavaliação que pode responder à multidimensionalidade e complexidade das escolas públicas enquanto organizações educativas específicas. Pelo facto de não existirem escolas iguais, a avaliação da escola deverá ser diferenciada e ajustada às realidades organizacionais para constituir um efetivo instrumento de desenvolvimento. O estudo empírico realizado no agrupamento X pretendeu recolher as perceções dos docentes do agrupamento em relação aos mecanismos de autoavaliação para a posterior elaboração de um dispositivo de autoavaliação. Este estudo permitiu reconhecer a importância atribuída aos processos de autoavaliação na promoção da melhoria da organização e do sucesso educativo dos alunos, bem como os constrangimentos associados a estes processos, sendo também apresentadas propostas para que este instrumento seja eficaz. Os resultados deste estudo foram as linhas orientadoras para a construção de um dispositivo de autoavaliação para o agrupamento X com a colaboração dos docentes, desenvolvendo um plano de ação com atividades definidas. Espera-se dar um contributo para implementar mudanças significativas, com vista à promoção de uma cultura de autorreflexão, de autoavaliação e de desenvolvimento sustentado da escola.
