Holocene records documenting variations in direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field during the last about seven and a half millennia are presented for Northwest Africa. High resolution paleomagnetic analyses of two marine sediment sequences recovered from around 900 meter water depth on the upper continental slope off Cape Ghir (30°51'N, 10°16'W) were supplemented by magnetic measurements characterizing composition, concentration, grain size and coercivity of the magnetic mineral assemblage. Age control for the high sedimentation rate deposits (~60 cm/kyr) was established by AMS radiocarbon dates. The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) is very predominantly carried by a fine grained, mostly single domain (titano-)magnetite fraction allowing the reliable definition of stable NRM inclinations and declinations from alternating field demagnetization and principal component analysis. Predictions of the Korte and Constable (2005) geomagnetic field model CALS7K.2 for the study area are in fair agreement with the Holocene directional records for the most parts, yet noticeable differences exist in some intervals. The magnetic mineral inventory of the sediments reveals various climate controlled variations, specifically in concentration and grain size. A very strong impact had the mid-Holocene environmental change from humid to arid conditions on the African continent which also clearly affects relative paleointensity (RPI) estimates based on different remanence normalizers. To overcome this problem the pseudo-Thellier RPI technique has been applied. The results represent the first Holocene record of Earth's magnetic field intensity variations in the NW Africa region. It displays long term trends similar to those of model predictions, but also conspicuous millennium scale differences.

Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic analyses from discrete samples of carbonate sites on the Queensland Plateau were used to determine magnetic polarity reversal stratigraphy and the nature of magnetization in these sediments. Magnetic polarity zones were correlated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale in the upper portions of cores at Sites 812 through 814, usually back to a late Pliocene age. Loss of reliable directional data was coincidental with a major decrease in magnetic intensity, below which, no stable polarity zones could be identified. The intensity reduction is either an in-situ alteration of magnetic grains, or an input signal representing progressive increase in the magnetic component of Queensland Plateau sediments. Although not conclusive at this point, the geochemical conditions and differing age of intensity reduction support the former hypothesis. Rock-magnetic analysis of carbonate sediments suggests that ultrafine-grained magnetite or maghemite crystals is an important carrier of remanence and may be biogenic in origin. Application of a recently calibrated anhysteretic remanent magnetization test to assess configuration of single-domain crystal within a natural matrix indicates that cementation (ooze-chalk-limestone) may be important in post-depositional changes affecting magnetostatic grain interaction.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are known for the unique properties conferred by their small size and have found wide application in food safety analyses. However, their high surface energy and strong magnetization often lead to aggregation, compromising their functions. In this study, iron oxide magnetic particles (MPs) over the range of nano to micro size were synthesized, from which particles with less aggregation and excellent magnetic properties were obtained. MPs were synthesized via three different hydrothermal procedures, using poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) of different molecular weight (Mw) as the stabilizer. The particle size, morphology, and magnetic properties of the MPs from these synthesis procedures were characterized and compared. Among the three syntheses, one-step hydrothermal synthesis demonstrated the highest yield and most efficient magnetic collection of the resulting PAA-coated magnetic microparticles (PAA-MMPs, >100 nm). Iron oxide content of these PAA-MMPs was around 90%, and the saturation magnetization ranged from 70.3 emu/g to 57.0 emu/g, depending on the Mw of PAA used. In this approach, the particles prepared using PAA with Mw of 100K g/mol exhibited super-paramagnetic behavior with ~65% lower coercivity and remanence compared to others. They were therefore less susceptible to aggregation and remained remarkably water-dispersible even after one-month storage. Three applications involving PAA-MMPs from one-step hydrothermal synthesis were explored: food proteins and enzymes immobilization, antibody conjugation for pathogen capture, and magnetic hydrogel film fabrication. These studies demonstrated their versatile functions as well as their potential applications in the food science area.

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependent structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. We observe that these films undergo a reduction in Curie temperature (T-c) with a decrease in film thickness, and it is found to be primarily caused by the finite size effect since the finite scaling law [T-c(infinity) T-c(t)/T-c(infinity) = (c/t)lambda holds good over the studied thickness range. We rule out the contribution from the strain induced suppression of Curie temperature with decreasing film thickness since all the films exhibit a constant out of plane tensile strain (0.5%) irrespective of their varying thickness. However, we observe that the coercivity of the films is an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk due to the tensile strain. In addition, we also observe an increase in the magneto resistance peak and a decrease in coercivity and electrical resistivity with an increase in film thickness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. CuFe2O4 nanograins have been prepared by the chemical co-precipitation technique and calcined in the temperature range of 200-1200 degrees C for 3 h. A wide range of grain sizes has been observed in this sintering temperature range, which has been determined to be 4 to 56 nm. Formation of ferrite has also been confirmed by FTIR measurement through the presence of wide band near 600 and 430 cm(-1) for the samples in the as-dried condition. Systematic variation of wave number has been observed with the variation of the calcination temperature. B-H loops exhibit transition from superparamagnetic to ferrimagnetic state above the calcination temperature of 900 degrees C. Coercivity of the samples at lower calcination temperature of 900 degrees C reduces significantly and tends towards zero coercivity, which is suggestive of superparamagnetic transition for the samples sintered below this temperature. Frequency spectrum of the real and imaginary part of complex initial permeability have been measured for the samples calcined at different temperature, which shows wide range of frequency stability. Curie temperature, T-c has been measured from temperature dependence initial permeability at a fixed frequency of 100 kHz. Although there is small variation of T-c with sintering temperature, the reduction of permeability with temperature drastically reduce for lower sintering temperature, which is in conformity with the change of B-H loops with the variation of sintering temperatures.

We describe a hybrid synthetic protocol, the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method, for the synthesis and stabilization of monodisperse amorphous cobalt nanoparticles. By employing an optimized ratio of a weakly coordinating solvent and a capping agent monodisperse colloidal cobalt nanoparticles (2 +/- 0.5 nm) have been prepared by the SMAD method. However, the as-prepared samples were found to be oxidatively unstable which was elucidated by their magnetic studies. Oxidative stability in our case was achieved via a pyrolysis process that led to the decomposition of the organic solvent and the capping agent resulting in the formation of carbon encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles which was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Controlled annealing at different temperatures led to the phase transformation of metallic cobalt from the hcp to fcc phase. The magnetic behaviour varies with the phase and the particle size; especially, the coercivity of nanoparticles exhibited strong dependence on the phase transformation of cobalt. The high saturation magnetization close to that of the bulk value was achieved in the case of the annealed samples. In addition to detailed structural and morphological characterization, the results of thermal and magnetic studies are also presented.

One-pot synthesis of amorphous iron oxide nanoparticles with two different dimensions (<5 nm and 60 nm) has been achieved using the reverse micelle method, with <5 nm nanoparticles separated from the stable colloid by exploiting their magnetic behaviour. The transformation of the as-prepared amorphous powders into Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phases (gamma and alpha) is achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under different optimized conditions. The as-prepared samples resulting from micellar synthesis and the corresponding annealed ones are thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Expectedly, the magnetic characteristics of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phase (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles are found to have strong dependence on their phase, dimension, and morphology. The coercivity of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles is reasonably high, even though high resolution TEM studies bring out that these nanoparticles are single crystalline. This is in contrast with previous reports wherein poly-crystallinity of iron oxides nanoparticles has been regarded as a prerequisite for high coercivity.

Thin film of Fe3O4 is grown on (100) oriented GaAs substrate using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The films were found to be (111) oriented. They were characterized morphologically as well as magnetically. They show Verwey transition at 120 K with the coercivity of 220 Oe at room temperature. These films were found to show magnetoimpedance effect with the ac magnetoresistance (MRac) of the order of similar to -6% at 10 MHz, at room temperature. The MRac was found to increase in low field-low frequency regime and decrease in low field high frequency regime.

Ternary CoNiP nanowire (NW) arrays have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition inside the nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The CoNiP NWs deposited at room temperature present soft magnetic properties, with both parallel and perpendicular coercivities less than 500 Oe. In contrast, as the electrolyte temperature (T-elc) increases from 323 to 343 K, the NWs exhibit hard magnetic properties with coercivities in the range of 1000-2500 Oe. This dramatic increase in coercivities can be attributed to the domain wall pinning that is related to the formation of Ni and Co nanocrystallites and the increase of P content. The parallel coercivity (i.e. the applied field perpendicular to the membrane surface) maximum as high as 2500 Oe with squareness ratio up to 0.8 is achieved at the electrolyte temperature of 328 K. It has been demonstrated that the parallel coercivity of CoNiP NWs can be tuned in a wide range of 200-2500 Oe by controlling the electrolyte temperature, providing an easy way to control magnetic properties and thereby for their integration with magnetic-micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to characterize the oxidation states in Ta/NiOx/Ni-81/Fe-19/Ta magnetic multilayers prepared by rf reaction and dc magnetron sputtering. The exchange coupling field and the coercivity of NiOx/Ni81Fe19 are studied as a function of the ratio of Ar to O-2 during the deposition process. The chemical states of Ni atoms in the interface region of NiOx/NiFe have also been investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the peak decomposition technique. The results show that the ratio of Ar to O-2 has a great effect on the chemical states of nickel in NiOx films. Thus the exchange coupling field and the coercivity of Ta/NiOx/Ni81Fe19/Ta are seriously affected. Also, the experiment shows that x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful tool in characterizing magnetic multilayers.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was first used as chelating agent and metal nitrates as precursor of ferrite in the fabrication of nanocrystalline Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4 particles by the sol-gel method. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the decomposition of dried gel, the formation of spinel structured NiZnCu ferrite, the sizes of annealed particles, the saturation magnetization and coercivity of annealed particles on annealing temperature is presented.

Pyrite is the most stable iron-sulfide in reduced environment, and plays an important role in geochemical iron-sulfur cycling of sediments. Thus, the presence of pyrite in sediments and rocks is an important indicator of sedimentary environments. Previous studies on the thermal products of pyrite showed that all of the products (e.g., pyrrhotite, magnetite, hematite) have strong capability of carrying remanence. To deepen our understanding of the environmental and paleomagnetic significances of pyrite, the mineral transformation processes of pyrite upon heating were systematically investigated in this study using intergrated rock magnetic experiments (in both argon and air atmospheres) and X-ray diffraction analysis. The room temperature susceptibility of the paramagnetic pyrite is about 2.68×10-5 SI. In argon atmosphere (reducing environment), pyrite was transformed into monoclinic stable single domain (SD) pyrrhotite above 440 C. The corresponding coercive force and remanence coercivity are about 20 mT and 30 mT, respectively. In contrast, in air atmosphere (oxidation environment), the intermediate thermal products of pyrite are magnetite and pyrrhotite, which were quickly further oxidated to SD hematite, which has coercivity of about 1400 mT. In addition, the hematite particles gradually grow from SD to PSD grain size region by multiple heating runs. The transformation processes of pyrite in oxidation atomosphere can be interpreted by three possible pathways: (1) pyrite→magnetite→hematite; (2) pyrite→pyrrhotite→magnetite→hematite; and (3) pyrite→pyrrhotite→hematite. Low-temperature magnetic experiments show no transitions for pyrite. Despite that low-temperature magnetic method is not suitable for identification of pyrite, it is clear in this study that the high-temperature thermomagnetic measurements (e.g., -T and J-T curves) are very sensitive to the presence of pyrite in sediments and rocks. Nevertheless, for the thermal treatment products, low-temperature magnetic measurements showed the 34 K transition of pyrrhotite and the 250 K Morine transition of hematite. Iron-sulfide has also been found on Martian meteorolites by other workers. Therefore, systematic study of rock magnetism of pyrite (and other iron-sulfides) and their products will have great significances for both paleomagnetism and planetary magnetism.
